Looking back at the 2024 European Football Championship, it is time to reveal my perhaps most controversial game design opinion: They need to make the goals bigger, or the field shorter. Bigger goals would be a problem with penalty kicks, but they could find a solution for that.
It's just good game design. Many games end 1:0 or 2:1, or in case of a league game, 0:0 or 1:1. At the national level, you get more interesting games more often, because there is just a lot more variation in skill, so you sometimes get a 4:2 or a really impressive and unlikely goal. Or maybe tournaments are just smaller and with fewer games, so you don't see that many interesting goals. Honestly, most of the Bundesliga is boring, you just see the interesting ones when you call in to vote for the "goal of the week" every Saturday.
Still, I think more goals would be good game design. No more games that end in 1:0, with the winning team carefully trying to save their advantage until the 90th minute.
There is no real way to get a favourable position and defend it for more than five minutes in sports like football or tennis or even basketball. Everything basically "resets" every so often, and the only resources you have are the stamina of your players and yellow cards. That doesn't mean football is a bad game, or a boring game, but it is very unlike chess in the same way that tennis, basketball, and ice hockey are unlike chess. At the same time football is unlike tennis, basketball, and ice hockey, because a game if football can have only one goal at minute 25 and end with a score of 1:0.
I think that's boring, and it's bad game design. Very often, I watch a football game and I think "this team played better than the other team most of the time, but they still lost."
It's not just me. I hear this from colleagues and acquaintances and TV sports commentators and "man on the street"/"vox pop" clips in the news after the game: They played really well, except for that one time when the other team scored that goal. The metrics on the screen during the game agree with that assessment: More ball possession, more attempts at goal, more shots that would have hit the goal – if it weren't for the opposite team's goalkeeper – but no goals.
It may sound like I am denigrating the strategy that goes into high-level football. I don't. I understand that football is more than just running really fast and kicking the ball really hard. When teams decide on their formations it's not just a matter of taste, it's not arbitrary. It's an important strategic choice that depends on the opposing team's formation and the strengths and weaknesses of the players that are available.
I also understand that games that end in 1:0 after one goal scored at minute 25, are very appealing to many watchers. There is still everything to play for. If your team scores a goal during minute 88, you even it out and it goes into overtime. You can still win! If, hypothetically, football games were to regularly have a score of 15:11 at minute 85, instead of 3:2, it would feel much more difficult to come back from that.
It's not like people don't watch basketball, or Olympic handball, or ice hockey games to the end. It's not like football fans never follow hockey. But football doesn't need to be hockey. The game "resets" more often in basketball, so football is more "strategic", in some ways. People who watch football already like it that way.
If they made the goals bigger, there would be less bitching and moaning about that one penalty kick, or that one off-side that decided the game.
It's just good game design.

hi judith!! i hope you are having a nice sunday 🤸♀️ i just wanted to ask how big is volleyball and handball in germany? like i only see the football and basketball national teams being talked about online so i was wondering 😙 (ps mwah mwah for consuming my vball nonsense)
hi :)
it's funny that you mention the basketball team because while i don't think basketball is unpopular in germany, i don't think it's as popular as handball. i'd say the sudden popularity spike online is because the german basketball team rather unexpectedly (like, unexpected for the broad masses, i have seen some experts call them the dark horse of the world cup tournament) won the world cup last year.
but if i compare the screen time (in the german free tv) the handball nt gets compared to the basketball nt (and also the german handball liga), i'd still say handball is more popular. which might just be cause the german handball clubs do relatively well in european competitions, like the champions league (i'm not sure about basketball).
i've also looked at various statistics regarding popular sports in germany, and all of them put handball infront of basketball - sometimes basketball isn't even in the top ten of popular sports.
i also don't know how popular handball is in north america cause i've seen more interest in the german basketball nt come from there, which is understandable, cause a lot of the basketball nt players are playing in the nba (a couple years ago that wasn't the case).
volleyball is really unpopular, like if i wasn't interested in sports and following the olympics quite closely, i wouldn't even know that the volleyball nt qualified for olympia. cause most reporters mention the football team, the basketball team and the two handball teams and that's basically it for the team sports. like i can't even tell you if they're good or something or what clubs there are in the bundesliga.

Ok this is an interesting development....With a half year old baby at the time.
I feel like Manu's retirement would not be far at this point if they decided for Ani to play handball again...and Nubel should reportedly return from Stuttgart in 2025 🤔🥲
But I have a different point to make, with all I have read about her and them together.
1.It's nice she decided to handle it all, despite she could stay at home comfortably ( as many people attack her, that it is all she wanted and did with Nina as well!).
2. May seem as not caring about baby ( I can see the comments like that coming), but as I handball nerd I can say that second league handball is not that difficult and very well manageable, since many players work or study at the same time ( same as Ani did). That is probably less time consuming than any other job. They usually train in the morning while Bayern has trainings in the afternoon. Also many of the away games are near Munich and Regensburg is only hour away. Also happy mother = happy child, they say ?
3. An objective truth is that she is very talented player( I would say even more than her brother), she has very good vision and precise hand. You don't score 71 goals in 25 games,If you don't have it. She was clearly her team's best player in 2022-23 before baby. If she focused only in Handball and nor having a serious injury, she could have been surely playing 1st Bundesliga by now.
4. This is such a positive sign for all woman that motherhood is not a burden, it does not stop you from fulfilling your dreams and being active mother, if you have a great man by your side. Not to mention it is amazing to see everyone around her being supportive of that, because that will need lot of logistics. It is nice to see a man as successful as Manu to support his wife doing whatever she wants ! ( Also something haters said before !)
5.I am preety sure Marita is a very handy grandmother and around a lot and while she lives in Munich she will surely be involved in this a Goat a handball player and a baby project and can help for 2-3 hours a day, if needed or take care If they are both away sometimes. Also I think Regensburg will do maximum to make it easy and smooth and she surely can take day or two off if needed, since even 50% Ani or sometimes missing games due to Luca, will be an update for the team on Left wing.
6. That clearly does not mean they don't love that little one more than anything and are career focused ( as people already said about it on few comments under article). It just means that can have family and careers. It's 2024 and this is a new normal which does not mean little one will grow up with nannies and those 2 surely will be very handy parents.
Maybe bit more complicated but honestly that's Manu he is a perfect example of complication mixed with geniality 😁😂
7. I love this transformation, despite she will surely be hated also for that. BUT THIS woman is becoming a slaying champion of woman power from a naive little girl, many people called her... There have been a lot said about this relationship, they never reacted and they are here, married with a baby. She now has a baby ( Manu wanted for a long time) and a career......and I love that more than with anyone, because that's to all the haters face ❤️ It is a strange feeling of satisfaction there in all honesty as a fan who only wanted the best for Manu since day one of this relationship.
That will those people say now about the woman they called a golddiger, who does not even want to play and fakes an injuries ? There were stupid ageist remarks about 14 years age gap as if that was their problem ! She proved during the time to be focused, very resilient despite all injuries and ambitious. And here she comes= independent, focused on her goal and excited to play again ! She clearly has a best sparring to practice over summer, so she will do great job😉 game over for haters 🖕🏻
8.You know she never did anything to attract attention in this relationship imo. As we all know Manu wants his privacy. It gave me a lot of respect for her to be honest. I saw it as a great proof of her not being like people say, because she was kind of little influencer before. She never used the attention because she dates Manu, never posted with him, never being spotlight hunter, not showing to everyone, who she is with. I started sceptical as many people, I have to admit, but that passed away long time ago. Do not forget Manu is a great human after all and I doubt he will marry anyone without values to match his own.
Well the attention thing will most likely, nicely change because she will absolutely proudly just smash thaaaaat Neuer on her jersey and believe me people will care 😍 That will be most followed 2nd ligue player on planet I swear 😂😂😂 And She will slay that, I am telling you 🙏🏻
10.Would love to see Bunkerladies in Bundesliga soon and she can 100% help that 💪🏻Despite people calling her mediocre =they just don't have a clue 😂
They are the most lowkey IT couple on the planet, but Neuers are on 🔥🔥🔥 She proves to fit to Manu as a glove daily this woman !

Sports
Germany ranks fourth in the Olympic Games medal count, having won 922 medals in both Summer and Winter Olympic Games since 1896. The country has hosted international sports events such as the 1936 and 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin and Munich, the 1936 Winter Olympic Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the 1974 and 2006 FIFA World Cup. It will host the UEFA Euro 2024.
Soccer
Soccer is the most popular sport in Germany. The Bundesliga (“federal league”) is the top professional soccer league. Clubs such as FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, RB Leipzig, SV Werder Bremen, and VfB Stuttgart take part in it. The most successful team is Bayern Munich, having won thirty-two Bundesliga titles.

The women’s national team is also a world power, having won the Olympic Games in 2016, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007 and the UEFA Women’s Euro in 1989, 1995, and 2001, making Germany the only country to have won both the men’s and women’s World Cup and European titles.
Handball
Germany, together with Denmark, is regarded as the birthplace of handball, as the first match took place in Berlin. The men’s national team has won the Olympic Games once, the IHF Wold Men’s Handball Championship three times, and the EHF Euro twice. The most successful team in the Handball-Bundesliga is THW Kiel.

Ice hockey
Germany has hosted the Ice Hockey World Championships seven times and the Ice Hockey European Championships four times. The men’s national team has never won an international competition, but has won seven silver medals, and is ranked seventh in the world.
Motorsports
Germany is one of the leading motorsports countries, having manufactured countless race winning cars. Notable Formula One champions include Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, and Sebastian Vettel.
The country hosts the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, a sports car racing series based in Germany, with rounds in other European countries. Since 1995, only German car brands are allowed to compete.
Winter sports
Germany is also very successful in winter sports, being the only country in the world to have four bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton tracks. It has won more medals in bobsledding than any other country in the world, if those won by East and West Germany are included.
The country also dominates biathlon, luge, and skeleton thanks to athletes such as Sven Fischer and Uschi Disl in biathlon, Felix Loch and Natalie Geiseberger in luge, and Anja Huber and Kerstin Jürgens in skeleton.
Notable skiers include Tobias Angerer in cross-country skiing, Martin Schmitt in ski jumping, Eric Frenzel in Nordic combined, and Katja Seizinger in alpine skiing. Claudia Pechstein is renowned in speed skating and Katarina Witt in figure skating.
Tennis
The two most successful German tennis players of all time are Boris Becker and Steffi Graf. The former won six Grand Slam titles, and the latter won twenty-two, becoming the only tennis player to win all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same year.
Cycling
Jan Ullrich is one of the greatest riders, together with Tony Martin in individual time trial races and André Greipel among road sprinters. Germany has hosted the start of the Tour de France four times.

Marina Hegerings clear Handball agsinst Leipzig. No pen either for Leipzig
Alot of wrong offside calls.
yea and the one where magda was brought down with the player holding on her neck in the box and the ref just didn't do anything

Idk if u were watching the Uruguay Portugal match but this handball thing is becoming ridiculous. Was Giménez supposed to remove his arm before falling, then fall, then reattached it again after???? Fuxking ridiculous honestly, and yes I’m extremely gimenez biased cuz I love him but I have seen handballs like this happen in La Liga countless times and they never give penalties because THE PLAYER WAS JUST FALLING
i didn't! i turned it on for about ten minutes and then switched it back off again. i couldn't put myself through that.
but this is what i don't understand. why do different leagues take different stances on fouls/handballs etc when it's supposed to be the same fucking rule? like you said, i've seen shit slide in La Liga or the Premier League that would have been a card booking in the Bundesliga.
VAR was supposed to right the wrongs and take out interpretation of the rules to make it fair and right and yet ???

HC Erlangen will punkten

Bochum Stay In Bundesliga After Dramatic Comeback Win Over Dusseldorf In Play Offs
CEO Patrick Fabian: Bochum rallied back from a 3-0 first leg defeat and overpowered Dusseldorf 6-5 (3-3) on penalties to stay in Germany's top-flight following the second leg of the relegation. Bochum started highly motivated into the second leg, knowing that only three-goal lead would force second-division outfit Dusseldorf into the overtime. However, Dusseldorf staged a lively start and nearly extended their lead to 4-0 on aggregate but for all that Ao Tanaka's shot got blocked by defender Ivan Ordets in the last nick of time. Bochum responded well and opened the scoring with its first clear-cut opportunity as Philipp Hofmann headed home Kevin Stoger's free kick cross into the area, cutting Dusseldorf's aggregate lead to 3-1 with 18 minutes gone. The visitors remained dangerous and gained momentum in front of the target before the half time as Keven Schlotterbeck headed narrowly wide in the 41st minute while Lukas Daschner's effort from 20 meters rattled the side netting moments later. Daschner remained in the thick of things and got his dangerous shot blocked by Tim Oberdorf five minutes into the second half. Bochum eventually reduced Dusseldorf's aggregate lead to 3-2 as Stoger's cross into the penalty area found Hofmann for the second time in the 66th minute. Dusseldorf was shocked and had to witness that Bochum levelled the tie four minutes later when Stoger converted a handball penalty after making it 3-0 on the scoreboards. The hosts couldn't put up resistance whereas Bochum missed the chance to take the lead as Takuma Asano squandered two promising chances in the closing stages. After an evenly balanced overtime the penalty shoot-out had to bring decision. Both teams missed one penalty before Dusseldorf's Takashi Uchino pulled over the target in the sudden death. "I am exhausted and can't describe my feelings. We have suffered a lot in the last week. Respect to the boys for turning a three-goal loss around. It will be fantastic for Bochum to play another season in the Bundesliga," said Bochum's CEO Patrick Fabian. With the result, Dusseldorf stay in the second division whereas Bochum stay up for another season. Read the full article
