Hi. Hope you are well? I'm sad to hear about Tomifuku. Also I'm a bit confused about the new GH minarai Kanoshizu. She's wearing a Tomikiku handara obi even though she is of Kano line? You can view the photo on insta ayumi6082. Thank you
Yeah, I was a bit confused by that too. Maybe Kanoya didn't have 3 orange minarai obi so they borrowed an obi from Tomikiku? ^^;

The Kawahia Okiya from Miyagawacho has debuted a new Minarai! Her name is Kanasue (叶季) and her Misedashi will take place in 4 to 6 weeks. This is already the second girl Kawahisa will be debuting this year, which is rare, since they are a pretty small okiya. It’s looking good for them!

Hai, First of all; Beautiful tumbler page!! The question i like to ask is; Is anything known of different traditions of Geiki and Maiko outside of Kyoto? Like the Shachihoko dance of Osaka Geisha, or ( in Pontocho, Kyoto), the different hairstyles of Maiko reaching the Erikae?
Hi and thanks!
The Sachihoko dance is a trademark of Nagoya, but they do it in Ôsaka (and Kyoto) as well!
Some examples I can think of:
- in Nara, Sakkô Hikizuri is almost completely black with red lining
- in Gifu, when Maiko entertain on boats, their Obi is tied up and resembles the “ya giccha musubi”, so it doesn’t get in the way.
- the trademark of Ôsaka Maiko is the Ya giccha musubi
- Akita had no Maiko for an undisclosed period of time, until three of them debuted in 2014. Their look changed a lot and it seems that they have finally settled to their unique style in Autumn 2018.
- in Fukuoka, the Hangyoku usually wear Momoware wigs, Furisode and Handara musubi. At certain events, Fukuoka Hangyoku wear Iromuji+Handara musubi or Hikizuri+Darari musubi like Kyoto Maiko. Kanzashi wise, they always wear a Kushi intead of a flower Katsuyama
- Furisode-san in Niigata wear only two different types of Obiage: 1. pink with white waves, 2. red with white flowers. The pattern of the Obiage also always matches the pattern of the Eri. It’s a seasonality thing.
- in Sapporo, all Geiko wear Tsubushi shimada wigs, which is a hairstyle for senior Geiko in other hanamachi. Similar to Gion Kobu, Maiko tie their Obiage in the last month of their apprenticeship.
- in Tokushima, Geiko and Maiko often wear matching Hikizuri/Furisode. Maiko’s Obi are tied as Fukura-suzume or Bunko musubi, which is not worn by other Maiko/Hangyoku. Geiko wear identical Kuromontsuki and pair them with identical golden obi.
- in Tokyo, each Hanamachi has a very distinct style; opposed to a certain uniformity you can find in Kyoto. Senior Geisha in Asakusa wear Tsunodashi musubi as their daily Obi style, Hangyoku in Asakusa hardly ever style their own hair when at work.
Hachioji Hangyoku don't wear wigs. Their hairstyle is Ofuku and it looks a bit different compared with Kyoto’s Ofuku. Their seasonal flower kanzashi change around the 20th of each month and not at the beginning.
In Mukojima, they have more Kanzashi variety than any other hanamachi. Mukojima Hangyoku can choose if they want to wear a wig or have their own hair styled. The "own hair" Momoware looks a bit different from behind than the Momoware of other cities. Senior Hangyoku can have their wigs styled as Yuiwata. All Mukojima Geisha wear Hômongi for work and their only Hikizuri are Iro- and Kuromontsuki.
Shinbashi never has a lot of Hangyoku, so it’s a bit hard to observe their style. Similar to Asakusa, they wear a Momoware-wig almost every day. But during the Azuma Odori, they will have their own hair styled.
- in Yûzawa, Maiko look very much like Kyoto’s Maiko, but wear wigs instead of having their own hair styled. However, from 2020 onwards, the single Maiko active has had her own hair styled the entire year, bringing her even closer to the typical Kyoto Maiko look.
That’s all, folks! (Last updated April 2021)

Hi Justine me again once more XD
Sorry for the bunch of questions and comments
Today I came to ask if you know are the Maikos and presumably super senior geiko or maybe an okasan on this video https://youtu.be/nwMCz-N5_44
And if you can tell us a little bit about them and if they are still active
I'm pretty sure I have seen the senior Maiko elsewhere but I can't remember when and where and by the hairstyle I believe they are from gion.
By other side I want to point out that we have a minarai wearing a handara obi with is rare to see in Footage, very cool but her lips looks like they are both painted, do you think they are of its just what it seems do to her face? Or perhaps these are pontocho Maikos?
Plus I have some other questions regarding some comments that I saw.
A selfcalled Japanese man told that they were not real due to how slow the walk and the quality of their outfits. I must say that he is wrong they look pretty legit taking into consideration all details on them, like the hairdo, their collar, kansashi and more, but the handara obi looks quite flat in my opinion the fabric doesn't look like any others I've seen and the way is tied is quite not like others handara obi I've seen in maikos, are these one used as well or maybe it was due to the season? We know that in Somer and warm months lighter kimonos are worn and this could be the case. But I would love to know your expert opinion
Another comment also said that the women who stops them and then walks with her it's a Geiko using western clothes, due to the way her hair is tied up, this could be the case but I'm no so sure because I've seen that hairdo in other elderly woman in Japan not only Geikos, however it could be the case or she could be an okasan, she gives me the vybe of one . But can you tell if she is one member of the karyukai indeed? And if she is do you know who she might be?
And to end this round of questions, at the end of they video when the girls and the woman meet eachother I don't see the girls properly greeting her. If that allowed of posible? They seem quite close but it's surprising for me a moment without formality and is expected in those cases specifically in public even if they were I. A rush. What is your opinion?
My apologies again for. The bunch of questions, I hope you can help me with my doubts and thank In Advance dear Justine.
I hope you are doing amazing
My very Best Regards:)
They're maiko Sakiko (紗貴子) and minarai Chisako (千紗子) of Nishimura (西村) in Gion Kobu. The woman who stops and talks to them is one of the okasan of Gion Kobu (I can't remember which one off the top of my head) and appears to be turning them around to avoid the crowd along Hanami Koji, so when you're on your way to work and are in a rush big, formal greetings just don't have time to happen. They do acknowledge her and bow to her when they first see her though ^^

There’s a new Minarai in Gion Kobu! Her name is Suzuno (鈴乃) and she is from the Fukushima Okiya! She was first photographed last March, so she has been around for about a year. The date of her Misedashi is not known yet, but it will probably take place in late March.

February 2019: Minarai Masanao (Man Okiya) of Gion Higashi showing off her Minarai-ensemble consisting of a shorter than usual hikizuri and handara obi, half the length of a Maiko’s darari obi.
Masanao’s obi features a motif of many colorful butterflies, which is very fitting for such a young girl. Man’s kamon is also a butterfly, which makes it even more appropriate.

January 2019: Minarai Fukunori (Shigemori Okiya) of Miyagawacho performing Gion Kouta at an ozashiki.
At the beginning of their careers, Minarai and Maiko only know a few dances; their repertoire expands significantly over time. The most important basic dances are Gion Kouta and Kyo no Shiki.

October 2018: Fresh Minarai Ichiume (市うめ) (Ichi Okiya) of Kamishichiken on her customary introductory rounds to ochaya and okiya in her district on the day of her debut.
The mysterious, supposed Ichihiro has been found! Ichiume was already doing her tameshiyui during the Bon Odori, and it was thus assumed that she was a Minarai already, and that her name would be Ichihiro.
After hearing nothing of her for about 2 months, and then the debut of a different Maiko from Ichi, it was assumed that she had retired before becoming a Maiko, but luckily, that was wrong, and we will soon see her debut, under a different name than expected!
After losing three Maiko and three Geiko just this year, and losing both it’s most popular Maiko and Geiko, Kamishichiken seems to be recovering. They’ve had one Erikae and, including Ichiume’s, will have at least 5 Misedashi this year, which is huge for small Kamishichiken!
Kamishichiken was hit especially hard by the decrease in Geimaiko numbers starting in the early 1980s, so having so many debuts in a time span of just a little over a year is very impressive! Last year, there were three Misedashi, and all of these girls are still around, so the district’s overall development is positive and it seems like there is a new generation of Maiko in Kamishichiken ready to take the spotlight!
I can’t wait for Ichiume’s Misedashi, we’ve been waiting for a long time and she is so adorable!

June 2018: Sisters Minarai Mameyui, Maiko Mametama and Maiko Mamesumi (Ninben Okiya) of Gion Kobu at the Gion Hojoe Festival.
The Gion Hojoe Festival takes place only in Gion Kobu every 3rd of June. Two Maiko release a bucket of fish into the Shirakawa Stream to show their appreciation for all live forms.
While usually only two Maiko take part, this time Minarai Mameyui, whose Misedashi is on June 6th, also participated.

May 2018: The Kaden Shikomi from Miyagawacho has made her debut as a Minarai! Her professional name will be Koaki (小晶).
Koaki has been around since at least April of last year, which was when the first picture of her was taken, so she has been around for well over a year and should be pretty well prepared.
It’s good to see that Kaden has a new Minarai again, their last Maiko was Koume who debuted in March of 2012 and had her Erikae in November of last year. I wonder if Geiko Korin or Koume will be Koaki’s onee-san!
