#E7: The Morose Mononokean (Fukigen na Mononokean)

Summary:

Without realizing it, a high schooler named Ashiya Hanae shows kindness to a youkai and is subsequently possessed by it on the first day of class. The spirit clings to his shoulder, making him progressively sicker each day. After a week of collapsing on his way into school, Ashiya notices a “Help Wanted” flyer for an exorcism service in the nurse’s office. Desperate, he calls the service, only to find that it is run by his grumpy classmate.

Abeno Haruitsuki prefers youkai to humans, sleeps through class, and is the master of a sentient tea room called the Mononokean, where youkai come for help with their problems. It turns out that they’re mostly benign, and exorcising them to the Underworld is safer for them. Ashiya convinces Abeno to exorcise the spirit possessing him, but Abeno demands he work part-time for the Mononokean as repayment. Abeno’s intimate knowledge of the spirit world and Ashiya’s empathetic nature form a great contrast as they work together.

Propaganda:

The Morose Mononokean is a beautifully written and animated coming-of-age story— with youkai, which can only ever make a piece of media better. The characters, both human and youkai, are fully three-dimensional, and although there isn’t much of an overarching plot in the first season/early manga chapters, the episodic stories contribute to the growth of both Ashiya and Abeno; their juxtaposed methods of problem-solving, and the way they affect and learn from each other’s perspectives as they become closer, are very satisfying both to analyze and to experience on an emotional level. Beyond the writing, the art is outstanding as well. The designs for the youkai characters are frequently adorable, occasionally terrifying, and always quite original, brilliantly incorporating characteristics of existing creatures in novel ways. The occasional visits to the Underworld are always a visual treat, with vibrant colors and a unique animation style painting the backdrop. Both the art and the characters are delightful and moving, and the OP is a banger. As a connoisseur of urban fantasy, Fukigen na Mononokean’s focus on emotion over action has made it my all-time favorite anime in the genre.

#E3: Mawaru Penguindrum

Summary:

For the Takakura family, destiny is an ever-spinning wheel, pointing passionately in their direction with equal tides of joy and sorrow before ticking on to the next wishmaker. With their parents gone, twin brothers Kanba and Shouma live alone with their beloved little sister Himari, whose poor health cannot decline any further.

On the day Himari is given permission to temporarily leave the hospital, her brothers take her out to the aquarium to celebrate, where the family's supposed fate is brought forth with her sudden collapse. However, when Himari is inexplicably revived by a penguin hat from the aquarium's souvenir shop, the hand of fate continues to tick faithfully forward.

With her miraculous recovery, though, comes a cost: there is a new entity within her body, whose condition for keeping her fate at bay sends the boys on a wild goose chase for the mysterious "Penguin Drum." In their search, the boys will have to follow the threads of fate leading from their own shocking past and into the lives of other wishmakers vying for the Penguin Drum, all hoping to land upon their chosen destiny.

Propaganda:

Do you like weird artsy stuff? Do you love magical girls? How about weird, messed up character dynamics? Then boy oh boy, Mawaru Penguindrum is the show for you! The show starts out funny enough, but will quickly spiral into an intense and intricate plot, involving fate, the mafia, magical destiny-rewriting spells, and penguins. Which yes, before you ask, the funny penguins are in fact plot relevant.

Penguindrum isn’t really a show about all that stuff though, even though it is. It’s a very symbolic story, about living under the crushing heel of capitalism, and the quiet poison of the societally expected nuclear family dynamic. I could write an essay on each and every single one of the characters, as they’re all given a lot of depth and time to grow. Every character has their own baggage that, one way or another, ties back to someone else. Everyone in this show is connected in some way shape or form, and that’s really highlighted when everything starts to fall apart. Be warned: this show is NOT a light watch! If you’re the type of person who gets really into deciphering symbolism and creating your own meaning from pieces of media, then this show is for you!

Ya había comentado respecto a la historia de este fic (en las notas de inicio), que, durante una conversación en la que El gran Kaiosama, Natsuko y yo hablábamos sobre el padre de Kiba, él comentó que, por alguna razón, se imaginaba algo como la película de JLo (Nunca más). Empezamos a desarrollar un poco la idea, pero él dijo que no la iba a trabajar, que si quería la tomara.

Al momento solo la dejé pasar, porque nunca fui capaz de imaginar a Tsume aguantando una golpiza mansamente, pero, con el tiempo, la idea evolucionó y resultó en este fic.

El padre de Kiba es un tema que me agrada tocar. La primera vez, fue con un one shot “¿Quién dice que no tengo padre?”, en el que no toqué ni una posible respuesta a quién es o qué fue de él, para Kiba, su figura paterna está bien definida y va acorde a lo que el clan creé.

La segunda, fue en el capítulo 25 de “Kunoichi”, el correspondiente a Hana, y ahí fue la primera vez que mencioné que él los abandonó. La verdad no recuerdo si fue antes o después de leer el manga, pero ahí quería usar ese recurso para marcar a Hana con una promesa: no decepcionar a su madre como lo hizo su padre.

Para “Alfa”, lo que marcó totalmente la diferencia entre escribirlo y dejarlo en el tintero, fue el capítulo 429 del manga, eso que dijo Kiba se me quedó grabado: el hombre huyó de ella.

En mi primera versión, estaba el hombre que abandona a una familia que no es lo que quería, que se siente inseguro y dominado por su esposa, castrado pues, en ese sentido que usan los psicólogos para definir a este tipo de hombres incapaces de aceptar y lidiar con mujeres de temperamento fuerte y/o más habilidosas.

Tenía, además, la sugerencia de El gran Kaiosama, la de Tsume enfrentándolo a golpes, aunque como ya dije, no imaginaba a Tsume como JLo en toda la primera hora de la película; asustada y corriendo por su vida (y la de sus hijos) ¡Ella es una kunoichi!

Es aquí donde se concibió una idea cuyo piloto es el capítulo 4 de “ANBU”, cuando tocó a Kiba presentar su prueba para la unidad de eliminación.

¿Y si había amor, pero no fue suficiente?

Algo que me gusta trabajar mucho, es la idea de que bajo la máscara de heroísmo y las misiones divertidas y hasta ridículas, hay algo muy oscuro.

En línea de tiempo, tanto Tsume como su esposo debieron pasar por dos guerras, e inspirándome bastante en casos de trastorno por estrés postraumático (TEPT) de soldados estadounidenses en Irak, fue que el personaje empezó a tomar forma, y la historia de Tsume, consistencia.

Debido a que esta trama era muy densa, decidí meter una historia paralela con menos dolor, la de Hana y Genma, una pareja de la que ni siquiera consta que se conozcan, pero por algún motivo me gusta. El final me encanta, es agridulce, casi doloroso, pero con un toque de esperanza porque, después de todo, esta es una historia de amor.

Para no perder la bonita costumbre, dejaré mis primeros intentos de portada:

Queda claro que Tsume es la protagonista absoluta, pese a la intromisión total de Hayashi en el final, toda gira en torno a ella, y un lector muy especial, le rindió un tributo a esa idea: Cian.

Aku bukan penggemar dari anime genre romansa, sejujurnya. Alasannya: kurang menantang, plot datar (mudah ditebak), kita pasti udah nebak MC akan saling jatuh cinta dan melakukan apapun untuk melewati rintangan cinta. Namun ada beberapa hal yang menjadi pengecualian untukku secara pribadi.

Khusus untuk Yubisaki to Renren, poin plusnya:

>Art cantik (shoujo manga banget), jelas dan pasti harus jadi poin pertama agar bisa dinikmati;

>Bahasa isyarat. Kita bisa belajar dan mengenal dunia penyandang tunarungu;

>Gak ada plot hole. Biasanya adaptasi pasti ada pengurangan dalam adegan asli (manga/novel). Alur yang dihidangkan mengalir dengan baik. Sebagai penonton yang tidak membaca manga-nya jelas akan jalan cerita tanpa ada keganjalan dari momen ke momen;

>Segi animasi, disuguhkan dengan baik tanpa kekurangan kualitas dari awal hingga akhir;

>Segi pengisi suara (seiyuu), sesuai dengan karakter yang diperankan;

>Soundtrack & lagu pembuka-penutupnya manis, sesuai dengan cerita.

Dan aku memberikan komentar karena halaman ini jika memuat lirik saja ada 400 kata. Daripada sepi, lebih baik 'ngobrol' dikit.

Hello, Hana Hyperfixates here! I’m a YouTuber with videos focusing mainly on Gravity Falls and fandom culture. But I’m also a Palestinian person who has been heartbroken watching the violence unfold in Gaza. So far more than 40,000 people have been killed, and countless more have been injured, starved, displaced and oppressed under the threat of genocide.

I want to do something about it, and if this fandom is what I know it to be, I’m sure others do, too. 

The Gravity Falls fandom has had no shortage of wonderful, generous efforts to extend aid to various charities and to those in need. Through my ten years in this fandom I’ve seen calendars and zines and similar projects be sold, with hundreds of dollars being raised.

So I am happy to announce a new fundraising effort: Mystery Twin Mystery Bags. 

The idea: bring in artists from across the fandom to design pins, stickers, charms, posters and more. These items would be pre-ordered, purchased, randomly assorted into mystery bags and shipped out to fans like you!  Options would exist at differently-priced tiers, for you to buy anything from a handful of random stickers, to a big box of everything, and the funds would all go to a great cause!

After shipping out items, 100% of the profits for this project would be split 50/50 between these two funds for aid and relief in Gaza.
