A day spent in Hammarby Sjöstad was very interesting to see the different approaches to density and housing in Stockholm. The environmentally conscious neighbourhood boasts the same density as many parts of the downtown area, with even more green space. This is because of the smart planning approach and small apartment blocks. Architecturally fairly homogenous, the true marvel of the area is indeed the planning and environmental approach to the neighbourhood. The sheer amount of green space and shared public space is what struck me most while walking around. The scale of the inner courtyards between buildings felt at once private and public, with small enclosed areas for children to play and good visual connections to the larger promenades. The scale of the buildings that enclose these courtyards also felt more human. Standing five or six storeys on average, the housing blocks provided shelter from the wind without compromising sunlight by there height. What I also realized is that the only way to really achieve the density to green space ratio there is in Hammarby Sjöstad is to de-emphasize vehicular traffic. In keeping most of the automotive and transit circulation to the arterial roads, pedestrian only walking paths can then be used much more effectively to knit housing to the green spaces, the water’s edge, and the main commercial centre.
