A remake of the Schuyler sisters, this time with the #hamiltour cast (because they're leaving SF 😭). . I had a tiny bit of left over clay from both my OBC Schuyler sisters and these, so I made them into stars based on the costumes! . . #hamiltonthemusical #hamiltonsf #angelicatour #hamfrancisco #hamilton #hamiltonart #polymer_clay #polymerclay #fanart #shnsf #handmadewithlove #handmade #fimo #sculpey #broadway @shnsf

Anyway I'm dead from this experience and I will never shut up about it. They put my art up on the official account. They gave my gifts to the cast. Honestly what even.

Oh, by the way, I was lucky enough to get to see Hamilton at the Orpheum in San Francisco tonight, and it was AMAZING. Highly recommend. The cast was amazing, the set was amazing, the theatre was amazing, the soundtrack was amazing.

I got to be in the room where it happened
CLICK*BOOM
The time finally came for my foray into musical theater nerdiness that is the first stop for the Hamilton national tour, San Francisco. I lucked out and managed to get matinee tix for today (because I figured the weekday matinees wouldn’t be as sought after during the initial ticket sales and I could more than likely be able to attend a mid-week matinee).
I mean I was so anxious about today that I hardly slept last night (rather normal for me because I do get high anxiety even about positive things, because I fucking worry too much.) I had a dream a couple of nights ago where we arrived at the theater but couldn’t find our seats because the theater itself was cavernous, contained multiple stages and multiple houses, and I couldn’t navigate the maze in time to make the performance. Also, to make matters worse, I dreamt that because we didn’t get to our seats, they were given away to someone else.
So that happened.
I’ll stick the rest of this under a cut so that i can gush about the cast and stuff without clogging up people’s feed too much
First off, I think I say this every time but I Love the Orpheum Theater. It’s just gorgeous inside, there’s lots of ornate and intricately carved artwork covering the ceiling and the walls of the house and it’s just a pretty place to sit and enjoy the environment, and then you remember that you’re there to see a show so that’s even more incredible!
So, here were the alternate principals for our performance. Initially, I was slightly disappointed that we got alternates for Burr and Angelica (which is always a risk you take with a two show day), but good lord they were so excellent that once they opened their mouths, I didn’t care.
Aaron Burr - Ryan Vasquez Angelica Schuyler - Raven Thomas
Michael Luwoye was electric as Hamilton, and (don’t tell anyone) I might like his performance as Hamilton better than Lin’s. You could sense his desperation, his arrogance, and the fact that he wears his heart on his sleeve. He was very flippant sometimes, which was part of his charm, but as his career flourished, his ambitions just grew and grew. Plus his performance in Hurricane had me in tears. Like, I know “I was twelve when my mother died, she was holding me/ I was sick and she was holding me / I couldn’t seem to die” was packed with so much sadness and despair but there was also an underlying rage. This was a man who took his life in his own hands after he prayed to an uncaring God who didn’t answer.
I wasn’t sure what I was expecting with Ryan Vasquez as Burr, since I’d heard really good things about Joshua Henry in the role, but by the time Wait for It came up, I was ready to accept this Burr. He really does get the arrogant, aristocratic side of Burr down, and that sort of wishy-washiness that everyone made fun of. His constant frustrations at being sidelined every time Hamilton popped up were palpable, and by the time of Your Obedient Servant, there’s definitely only one way for this relationship to go and it won’t be pretty. He did nail Room Where It Happens, Burr’s longing and growing ambition and anger that he’ll forever be branded an outsider. I loved it. Also, he *towered* above Luwoye, so it felt like the conflict between “trust fund baby” Burr and “young, scrappy, and hungry” Hamilton felt inevitable.
EDIT: I just saw on Instagram that this was Ryan’s first go at Burr. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT HE WAS SO GOOOOOOD
Raven Thomas *shone* as Angelica. I haven’t seen Emmy Raver’s performance so I can’t compare, but I think Raven could stand toe to toe with Renee Goldsberry. She’s THAT GOOD. Satisfied was amazing. (Also, I love the way this song is staged). I mean, those were some of the toughest and fastest rhymes in the show and she went through it all effortlessly. I’m beyond happy with the Schuyler Sisters we had.
Other things:
Solea Pfeiffer as Eliza was radiant and glowing and an absolute delight to watch. The staging on It’s Quiet Uptown is heartbreaking and that small motion as “she takes his hand” means everything and this made me cry sooooo much. I wasn’t the biggest fan of this song on the album (because it’s just...sad) but it gets so much richer seeing it live.
I LOVE REUBEN CABRAL. He was perfect as Laurens and he was more than perfect as Phillip. (He continues on the adorable Latino actor tradition for this role. I dig it)
Jordan Donica was an adequate Lafayette (I wasn’t the biggest fan of his French Accent but he did kill on Guns and Ships and that’s all you can ask for a Lafayette) BUT HE ABSOLUTELY KILLED AS JEFFERSON. It’s hard to clear Daveed Diggs out of my head in these roles but good god he was awesome. Smarmy and showboaty and he also towered over Hamilton. I sense a theme.
I love following Mathenee Treco’s Instagram Stories and he’s just so damn fun as Mulligan/Madison.
It’s also hard to get Chris Jackson out of my head when it comes to Washington, but Isaiah Johnson was wonderful. He had the presence that Washington needed, the poise. He’s very much the elder statesman of the ensemble, also I think his range is a little higher than Jackson’s, which somehow makes One Last Time a little...sweeter? Maybe? I’m not sure if that’s right word. Gentler, maybe.
Rory O’Malley as King George was a goofball and that’s all I care about when it comes to the King Georges. I still get a kick out of him being a part of the “never gon’ be president now” celebratory dance around Hamilton.
Although I think the MVP for this performance was Amber Iman, who does the Peggy/Maria Reynolds role. The roles couldn’t be any more different but she was perfect in both, but I mostly loved her as Maria. Holy crap her voice. HER VOICE. It was husky and sexy and holy crap her RANGE. I feel blessed for having experienced Say No to This. (Yes, even as Hamilton screws up his life for some nookie on the side)
Was it worth it? Hell yes, if you loved the cast recording, you owe it to yourself to try and watch the damn thing live. The experience is so much richer, the choreography is amazing, I’m still in awe of all the lighting magic they did, and you will probably ugly cry like I did right at the end of the show.
Because everything after “the orphanage” sets me to tears.
Yep, best live theater experience I’ve had in a long time.
