200-Year-Old Message in a Bottle Found on a French Clifftop
Volunteers on an archaeological dig in the ruins of an ancient Gaulish village high above the cliffs in northern France this week uncovered a small glass vial —and within it a neatly rolled, 200-year-old message from a colleague from another era.
The note was written by archaeologist P.J Féret, who conducted a dig at the Cité de Limes site in January 1825, the town supporting the dig, Eu, said in a Facebook post.
Féret wrote —perhaps as inspiration to the nascent archaeologists standing in his footsteps nearly two centuries later— that he was a member of several scientific societies and he "continues his research in this entire vast compound."
"It was an absolutely magic moment," Guillaume Blondel, who heads the archaeological service for the town of Eu, told the BBC. "We knew there had been excavations here in the past, but to find this message from 200 years ago… it was a total surprise."
"Sometimes you see these time capsules left behind by carpenters when they build houses. But it's very rare in archaeology," Blondel said. "Most archaeologists prefer to think that there won't be anyone coming after them because they've done all the work!"
Municipal records confirmed that Féret conducted a first dig at the site 200 years ago.

The oldest message in a bottle ever found was 131 years and 223 days old when it was discovered, Guinness World Records said in a statement. Australians Tonya and Kym Illman found the message on Jan. 21, 2018, at Wedge Island, Australia.
A German ship captain threw a gin bottle overboard on June 12, 1886, Guinness World Records said, with a message written in ink, that contained the ship's coordinates and details, including departure and arrival times. The note, from the Deutsche Seewarte in Hamburg, requested the finder deliver the note to the nearest German Embassy.
If authenticated, Féret's 200-year-old message in a bottle will be the oldest ever found.
By Cara Tabachnick.

All of your WIPs sound interesting, but can you tell me a bit more (and post a snippet of) your mpreg Paul? And 1967? Just that Come onnnn I need more! Thank you!
mpreg Paul is still in the vague outline stages, and I can tell it really wants to be long, probably spanning multiple points in the timeline, but it will definitely start with early Liverpool and Hamburg. Basically it’s gonna be an au where Paul can get pregnant, hasn’t told anyone, and surprise John knocks him up in Hamburg not too long after they start fucking. Angst and shenanigans ensue.
1967 was actually the first fic I started working on when I first got into this fandom, and it’s gone through many iterations as my own feelings about mclennon have evolved. Right now I’m not sure what I’m gonna do with it since my original premise was based on an idea of their relationship that I don’t really go with anymore. I do wanna make it into something though because I like what I’ve written so far. Premise is kinda an exploration of what shifted about their relationship in ‘66 - ‘67 to make it suddenly appear so outwardly domestic.
There were five of them; three men and two birds, and it was really too dark to gather much more than that, but Paul could see well enough to be sure the girls were pretty. The one closest to him now had long hair, brown or maybe red, and reminded him enough of Jane to have him reflexively reaching for his glass to finish the last of his gin and tonic. Better to drown out that thought before it took root.
Okay but now I feel like I should really get back to work on this one.
Thanks for the ask! 🧡🧡

Finally - Home
They kissed. Finally.
Cas tasted like almonds and leather and cherry gin. His hair felt soft, far softer than you'd expect a man's hair to be. Dean was breathless, trying to take in everything before it dissapeared, because really, when did anything good ever last for the hunter? But the moment lasted, magical and surreal and undisturbed.
They were kissing. Finally.
Dean tasted like beer and pie and hamburgers. Cas could feel his every monecule, sense his every cell, as their tongues collided. He kept expecting Dean to shove him off, pretend like it never happened, but with each passing minute he grew more confident. Dean's hair was short and stubborn, fighting as Cas tried to pet it down. Dean was warm, and rough, and soft, and home.

The Kulturtechnikforschung strikes back!
Ich unterrichte wieder an einer Hochschule. Das wird Anfängerübung at its best!

Dan Reeder Releases 2022 Performance on YouTube
- Gig marked renegade singer’s “first concert in many, many years”
“I rarely perform and soon you’ll see why” Dan Reeder told the assembled audience in Hamburg, Germany, before admitting live performance “scares the shit out of me.”
The renegade folk singer and American ex-pat played what was billed as his “first concert in many, many years” in 2022 as part of the Oh Boy Goes to Europe tour, where mostly American artists singed to John Prine’s record label got the chance to show off their skills for fans overseas.
Reeder’s lived in Germany for decades, releasing lo-fidelity, homemade music that cuts - both with humor and insight - in rapid bursts of activity. He played for less than 25 minutes. But the songs, coupled with his Prine stories - Reeder opened 30 dates for his musical sponsor over the years - would make any fan regret not being there.
Playing solo and acoustic, Reeder opened with “Clean Elvis,” in which the decidedly not flashy songwriter adds flashes of the King’s music with every line. He decried/celebrated alcoholism on “Gin Tonic” and got the intimate club audience to sing along on “Work Song,” which features one repeated line in a sorta-gospel arrangement:
I got all the fuckin’ work I need, he and they sung.
“Maybe” may be one of Reeder’s most-serious numbers, a lamentation on life and death and the songwriter’s best guest at what does - or doesn’t - come next:
Maybe Jesus beat that rap, we’re not sure/maybe you can live forever if your heart is pure/or maybe you’ll come back/some day as a king prawn/maybe angels come and take you away to heaven or the other way/but from down here it appears/that when they’re gone/they’re gone
For his part, Reeder’s been gone from the stage since this appearance last year and there’s no telling when - or even if - he’ll ever return. Cherish this gift, the closest thing to a Dan Reeder live album fans are ever likely to hear.

Egg: poached if I’m at a restaurant that offers it, otherwise over-easy or scrambled
Steak: medium rare, it’s not a hamburger! even a bad cut of steak is better rare (texture-sensitive people are exempt, you’re valid)
Milk: oatmilk is good, regular dairy is good, soy is good, wish I could have some rice milk IDK where to buy it, get that almond shit away from me it’s a waste of good water
Alcohol: lately I’ve preferred gin-based drinks but honestly anything sweet/fruity and not burning my mouth is fine, I’m a wimp and proud of it
Warm drink: have you heard of a thing called “global warming”

After lunch we went to Targallmenningen Street, the major shopping street in Bergen. It has a series of stores, department stores and an indoor mall. This is where the locals shop. We went window shopping and prices were about 25 to 50 percent higher than you would pay for an equivalent item in the US. But there is no sales tax here.
Below is a picture of Targallmenningen Street.

We had signed up for an English-speaking walking tour and ferry ride in the late afternoon. We wanted to go on the tour starting at 12 noon, but it sold out, so we opted for the one starting at 5:30 pm. Although the tour could accommodate up to 12 people, we ended up being the only ones on it! So we ended up with a two-hour personal tour. This was great because in addition to learning about the historical aspects of Bergen, we also got insights into what it’s like to live here.
During the “private tour” our guide Don took us to the Fish Market. Hanging from the ceiling is dried cod. I had enough cod liver oil as a child no more cod for me :-).

The building below is in the Bryggen Wharf and illustrates the problem that fire presented for the wooden structures built there. Wood was used because it was readily available in the area. At this site, the original warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1476 and rebuilt in 1480. Another fire destroyed the wooden warehouse in 1702, and it was rebuilt in 1712. In 1912, the wooden warehouse was torn down and rebuilt using bricks to minimize the fire hazard. So far, it has lasted.

Along the way we passed the Mode Museum shown below. This museum focuses on the history and cultural significance of fashion and textiles within the region. We didn’t go in it, but it has a beautiful architecture.

The statue below is of Ole Bull, a renowned Norwegian violinist and composer of the 19th century, celebrated for his virtuosic performances and charismatic presence. He was an 1800s version of Elvis and quite the lady’s man. In addition to fathering over 40 children, he played a significant role in promoting Norwegian culture and music.

Henrik Ibsen, shown in the statue below, was a famous Norwegian writer known for his plays and poems starting around 1850. People often call him the 'father of modern drama' because he was one of the first to write plays that showed real-life situations and characters, making his work very influential in the world of theater. Check out his eyes. He look more like Dracula than a playwright!

Below is the Bergen National Theatre, the exterior on the left and the interior on the right.

The tour included a boat ride on ferry number 2070 from Strandkaiterminalen (a pier in the harbor) to Kleppesto, an island in Bergen Bay. It is a commuter ferry to facilitate people living in Kleppesto and working in Bergen. It provided us an opportunity to view Bergen from the bay.
The picture below is the Bryggen Wharf taken from the ferry.

In addition to using the ferry, the residents of the Kleppesto island can get there using a bridge. The bridge looks a lot like the Golden Gate Bridge, except for the color, of course.

Our tour finished at 7:15pm and from there we went to Royal Gourmetburger & Gin restaurant for dinner. We had read in a local newspaper review that it had the best hamburgers in Bergen and it had good reviews on TripAdvisor. We both had a bacon cheese burger and sweet potato fries. The food was just OK— I’ll bet there are better burgers in Bergen.
