Happily Never After

Nobody is ever going to love you.

Let’s just get that out of the way first,

mythologies we ingest since childhood

like candy-coated arsenic, salivating over

the possibilities, counting the ways.

Your Hallmark fantasies will fail you,

those snow-covered sets with greenery

tastefully appointing the lamp-posts,

and the handsome leads sporting thick

woolen sweaters that you can’t afford.

He, or she, will bump into you at the

coffee shop, gently, just enough to spill

a warm dollop, after which you will chat

about how you, or they, are new in town,

trying to save the old farmstead from

being paved over into a parking lot.

Blah, blah, blah, orphanage, blah, blah,

grandma’s ring, blah, blah, blah, it needs

to be done by Christmas or, blah, blah,

are those sleigh bells? yadda, yadda.

It doesn’t work that way. Let that go.

Let that go like a red balloon released

into winter air, like a fat kid on a sled

dropping from the crest of a steep hill

at nose-numbing speeds, like whatever

other colorful simile you care to mention.

Rather, you will grow up in, and live, and

die in the same bleak, familiar town, running

into the same people over and over, and they

are bored with you, and no one exciting and

new will enter your life because you are a

stranger, and these days, we really don’t talk

to strangers, so they will simply pass you by

and probably not even make eye-contact lest

it is misinterpreted as socially aggressive, and

if you do spill someone’s coffee, or god forbid,

scald them with your steaming latte, they will,

at best, give you a dirty look or, at worst, sue

your ass and post your face on social media.

This is the world we’ve created.

The only way it changes, the only way you

can be saved is by telling the director, fuck it,

I’m going to talk to strangers, and pet random

dogs, and trespass into crumbling mansions,

and set up a charity to save the Christmas tree

farm so that it won’t get bulldozed into dirt.

If you’re lucky, you’ll get a story out of it,

maybe a nice conversation, but

not love. Never love.

That’s asking too much.
