*sighs loudly* so i Was going to draw them but turns out my own design is too difficult for me to draw. but i'll be making this post anyway bc this au has been cooking for so long i might as well!

Featherless Flight AU

aka dca avian au where these fucks r BIRDS

(disclaimer this is a sun x moon au. it also deals with heavy themes such as child abuse, death, violence, and. ya know. wutever tws come with the apocalypse (also these will not be talked about in detail in this post))

nothing robotic in them. just feathers, blood, and bones. a lot of that stuff may be lost or break throughout their story! but lemme at least tell u wut they look like (without having my own drawings OTL (i only have a ref for their faces (which im not confident of)))

a quick note for both of their designs, they r both Fully Covered in feathers, including their arms and faces (yes they have arms And wings). the only places that dont have feathers is their lower legs and hands. they have anthropomorphic legs. and their face shape is also similar to a barn owl, as shown here (ignore the lack of mouths, idk wut to give them)

suns design! he has the coloring and general design of a sun conure. hes full of bright reds and yellows, tho the green is replaced with a bit of blue. he has multiple crests around his head that fluff up similar to a cockatiel but theyre in a way that make it look like rays. in the drawing above is wut they look like without their crests raised; that is their default. suns feet r grasping feet which r 2 toes in the front and 2 in the back. sun has high speed wings so aes a lot faster. (if u dont know wut any of this means i recommend u look it up, im a bird nerd) sun is also specifically an omnivore (them having different diets is actually plot relevant)

moons design next. moon is the color of a hyacinth macaw tho his anatomy is closer to an owl. he has one large crest on his head like a cockatoo. its also colorblind! since its anatomy is based mainly off of owls, for moons ability to see at night means he can see less colors. and bc hes more sensitive at night his eyes r always half closed in light, making it look sleepy despite being fully awake. moon has raptor feet with 3 toes in the front and 1 in the back. xis claws r also much larger than suns. moon has passive soaring wings which is better for longer flights. and moon is a carnivore :)

theres also an eclipse but their design is an enigma to me even in my own mind

but back to sun and moon! if anyone is curious moon uses he/it/xe pronouns while sun uses he/it/ae pronouns. they r both aroace and love each other deeply (qpr babyyyyy). sun is genderfluid while moon doesnt give a shit (agender).

sun is more bubbly and energetic. very much high energy bouncing off the walls. hes the kind of optimist where u cant tell if their "bright side"s r trying to help or be condescending. its a master at back handed compliments. heavily a perfectionist and will reach the point of screaming fits if wut he doesnt isnt perfect. ae has a lot of self image issues. ae hides a lot of aers lack of self confidence and doubt behind a wall of "im the best", tho that wall can crash very easily. a bit of a flirt, but mainly bc he just enjoys seeing how ppl react. he takes compliments from everyone but moons compliments r always the best

moon is lower energy and calmer. at least, he acts like it. hes more reserved and if it wasnt for sun he wouldnt have any friends or talk to ppl at all. he fears abandonment and sun is the only person who has stayed with him this whole time and is the only person he truly trusts. is very aggressive towards anyone it doesnt know. despite being shorter than sun (hes 6ft while sun is 7ft) it definitely does a good job at intimidating ppl. over time when xe becomes comfortable with someone xe will eventually calm down and show a bit of a softer side to them. when xes actually calm and likes someone xe can be a bit... chaotic :)

im honestly not sure where ill start their story since ive already thought about their childhood but i also wanna write about their adulthood as well. the story of their childhood mainly deals with the abuse they went through, then with adulthood theyre shoved into an apocalypse bc... y not :) (btw the apocalypse is mainly just bc ive been enjoying apocalypse aus a Lot lately and wanna write one. the child abuse is for their development and to show y they act the way they do. while it will be fun to write their development, i am by no means saying abuse is okay and this topic will be treated carefully and seriously.)

Here in Northern Germany the weather is typical for November, cold, drab, wet. Therefore I wasn’t out to take new pictures. So here is a splash of colour, one of my favourite travel bird pictures, an orange-fronted parakeet eating flowers. It was taken in Costa Rica.

bird of the day: half-moon conure

the half-moon conure, also known as the orange-fronted parakeet, is a medium-sized parrot that is found from mexico to costa rica.

the half-moon conure feeds on various flowers, buds, seeds, vegetation, and fruit. a known favorite of this bird is figs.

outside of the breeding season, half-moon conures live in large flocks, sometimes of over a hundred birds.

this bird has unusual nesting habits. both the male and female work tirelessly to hollow out a termite nest. once the termites create a ‘seal’ around the damage, they use the hollow within the nest to raise their young. they also occasionally use empty woodpecker hollows.

the half-moon conure has also established a breeding population in california. normally, feral parrots cannot sustain a population for a long period of time, but this flock has been recorded since 1998.

this conure is rated ‘least concern’ by the iucn, but they have suffered population declines due to trapping for the pet trade.

@predatorydeception and I made some bird friends (and one enemy in her case) the other day while on vacation in San Antonio. The conures and and Loris reeeeeeally liked me for some reason. Everyone was saying it was the hair.

The loris on my shoulder also decided I was a fellow bird and needed preening as they tried to groom my hair and lick my face.

Hmm let me think... crimson bellied conure, patagonian conure, victorian crowned pigeon, brabanter chicken, Ayam cemani chicken, frizzle chicken (man chickens are so funky), and if you want an aggressive bird then an option is the casuarius unappendiculatus (don't ask how did I remember that word)

And this last one is more like a suggestion- but Alberto can be a half-moon conure since they are native from Mexico. Don't get fooled by their tiny bodies they have A LOT of energy... half-moon conures my beloveds<3

she’s aware of her flakiness - it’s not something she likes and has made small strides to combat. she joined a sorority to make new friends, but also to give her some structure that she HAD to abide by. 

has five tattoos and will contest that two of them were a good idea at the time but ultimately,,, regrets them ( s/o to the YOLO lip tattoo she got four years ago and it STILL hasn’t faded, despite being promised it would ). the other she regrets is simply because it is so cliche - it was her first, a simple wave beneath and to the side of her right breast. she’s also got a conure perched on a half moon on her back left shoulder, this on the back of her upper right arm, and ‘vis ta vie’ on her inner left leg, just above the ankle. 

she’s very smart when she puts her mind to something, it’s just the matter of staying invested in whatever she’s working on. fortunately, she does pick up on things quickly. for example, she learned how to sufficiently play piano in about three months before she ditched the hobby all together. played every sport under the sun for a year before eventually ditching it ( with the exception of swimming ). 

that being said - despite being 23 this is her first year of graduate school at paragon academy, due to the fact that she changed her major three times in undergrad.

has a blue crowned conure named paulie, yes - just like the movie. it was her favorite growing up !

is a swim instructor and lifegaurd ( during the summer ) at the local swim club! loves working with kiddos ! has travelled to a lot of really cool places in the world doing different missions with nonprofits and or/research working on tagging sharks and studying their populations ! 

some *history* :

born august 2, 1996. she’s one of five children of vidar thorson ! is the ( older ) irish twin of tova, which is cute n funky n fresh

she has. . . always been flighty. when she was younger, it was more so with her emotions - they would turn on a dime. she felt things very vibrantly. when she was happy, she was overwhelmingly so. when something even mildly set her off, you knew. very much a realist growing up. saw things for how they were, and it often upset her.

her childhood was good. she loved her parents, loved her siblings. she valued the time where they ALL were together, but she made it. . . very known she was unhappy when her dad would leave. large tantrums and screaming fits when she was younger. acting out when she got older ( she’s mellowed out though, now she’s just. dumb ).

she has a pretty good relationship with her mom. by no means is she the closest to her out of the lot, but they get on well. maybe not so much in her teens when astrid was busy acting out, but really. . . that’s ANY teen and their parents, isn’t it?

rly clung to tova after the incident at the shops. she mourned for her aunt, she did, as much as a thirteen year old girl could, but tova was her highest concern. she didn’t know how, per se, to comfort someone in tova’s situation aside from being there when needed ( even when her presence wasn’t asked for i.e sleeping on the floor beside her bed ).

she has a . . . tricky relationship with her dad and goes back and forth, often, about whether or not she wants a better relationship with him. when she was younger she just wanted his consistent, undivided attention. wanted him to be around. she knows his absence does not come with an easy answer, but that’s never changed how she felt. there’s a lot of. . . undealt with animosity, for lack of better wording, on her part. the damage was done, and being nearer to him has thrown her through a loop. it’s not uncommon for her to agree to plans to see him and then cancel on them at the last minute. also not uncommon to reach out at the last minute, too. fickle chick.

i’ll likely add onto this as i build onto astrid and work out where she fits in the grand scheme of things ! 

wanted connections ! i’ll send these to the main in a more. . . formal format, eventually, but ! :

a squad that rly b drinking,,, the stupid bitch juice ~ people she just does dumb shit with. admittedly they have probably. . . matured, a bit, since their rly dumb days considering i’d imagine most of them to be grad students or well, graduated but i think that is a good foundation, of sorts, to build off of. like any young adults finding time for each other after undergrad could always be. . . a time. these are also likely her tried and true best friends. her constants. could rly b anyone, i think this could be cool if they’re all polar opposites, but they should be around her age !i’d imagine it’s a group of four, maybe three, i’m not rly picky. 

astrid has likely had one or two exes. she floats both ways, so this would be open to anyone. it was likely her that led to their demise. she’s flighty in all things. plans. feelings. maybe she was just a straight up lousy girlfriend. didn’t allot enough time to the relationship to make it work. maybe her feelings sizzled quickly after the two became a thing. it does not HAVE to be that way, just some options, as astrid’s STILL really figuring herself out and i really doubt she was a perfect opposite in the past. but, hey ! if you have something else in mind, i’m not picky. 

mentors !!! people that have tried to help her get her shit together. professors wise, maybe they helped her freshman/sophomore year settle on selecting an actual major that worked. i imagine that sort of connection would have stuck for her, and she often would turn to them for advice or help. it could come in the form of a faux-big sibling, too. i am always a sucker for. that shit.

if your character would have ANYTHING to do with the ocean, that’s something cool to build off ! i imagine she’s done lots of educational trips and internships, apprenticeships and what not, whether it is tagging marine life, studying coastal ecosystems/shore erosion. a few summers during undergrad she often helped with rehab & release !

coworkers ! she works at the local swim club so that could be ! fun ! people she did dumb shit with while drunk ( maybe your char was there when she got one of the stupid tattoos ? and they never spoke again ? this could b funny ) ! friends that she was friends with for the hottest minute but lost interest ! or maybe they just grew apart ! i imagine she was never part of a solid friend group for a while, just kind of. . . hopped from one to the other, so if that would fit somewhere, that would be cool ! someone she always runs into at the pet store ?? who knows ! previous hook-ups ! if your character teaches something, she could have been a former student of theirs before she gave up the interest ! i’d also love for some connects where people just. . . don’t like her for whatever reason. could be enemies, doesn’t have to be. maybe just animosity. maybe its her behavior. who she hangs out with. something else we could plot out, idk.

Things my half-moon conure, Grinch, does: He will stop whatever he’s doing to attack the scrubber brush I use to clean his cage. His favorite song is Super Bass by Nicki Minaj and he will sing to it (not very well, but he knows the rhythm). He blesses himself when he sneezes. He’s fascinated with flinging LEGO pieces. His nicknames include “Green Taco,” “Mighty Falcon,”“Baby Avocado,” and “Loud Banana.” He’s a bitty bitey boy but I love him.

Ok its dm story time

So after Grandma died, I was in a pretty deep depression funk and just went like... two months straight without planning or mapmaking or scheduling sessions for the group I DM. We met this week for the first time in a loooooong while and I'm just. SO PROUD OF THESE BABIES I love these characters SO MUCH.

So the party is: aasimar redemption paladin (and reluctant hexblade), weretiger tiefling/half-elf beastmaster UA ranger, tiefling moon druid (I think shes circle of the moon I'll have to double check if that got switched around), variant human samurai fighter, tengu Phoenix soul sorcerer

The party had a pretty rough time with the last dungeon boss encounter they had because they weren't really prepared for an encounter that was more tactical than an upfront slugfest, so I figured this time around I would introduce room for positioning and environment to be thought about in a bit less of a tough setting than HEY FINAL BOSS GET REKT

So the party is heading into the kobold tunnels under the city that the lycanthrope mafia have commandeered to get around Rainspire, in hope that the resistance will lead them to the elusive Ruby Eyes (the lycan mastermind and maybe the paladin's evil brother??). They talk the resistance into giving them one of the kobold members as a guide while the Kenku and the other kobold draw away the main force of the hostile kobold tribe living in that span of tunnel

They choose the draconic ancestry sorc who mostly carries lightning damage and support spells (the other was an arcane archer fighter with the archery fighting style, so very minor crowd control and mostly just a ton of I Never Miss ranged dps)

The first encounter is a bunch of kobolds, of course. The 1/8th CR front line mooks only carry normal daggers so they basically can't scratch the lycan ranger at all, but I used some fancy Volo's kobolds and archers with silver arrows - these kobolds are trying to defend their turf from the invading lycanthropes, so I figure they'd have scavenged or stolen silver from the city surface and developed strong guerrilla tactics to handle melee fighters

Thus: a pretty spacious room with a couple regular kobolds and two dragonshields waiting front and center to mob whoever crosses the door for Pack Tactics advantage. Two tall stalagmites with kobold archers using them for half cover. About sixty feet back, two big wooden posts with wood platforms about 30 feet from the ground. Each has a scale sorcerer who hurl spells, then duck behind the post for cover too. The sides of the room have little passageways, built for Small size creatures, that open into the room roughly every 15 feet or so. These have kobold archers who run out, take a piddly little potshot, then run back into the tunnels.

The idea here was that there were two Challenges: positioning and cover. As long as the melee mooks were allowed to bunch up, every one of those 1d4s would be with advantage, so crowd control and making sure nobody got cut off from the party were important factors. The ranged fighters would all be taking advantage of environment to make themselves hard to hit, too. (I had put a supply of oil and a lantern at the start as a "burn them out" option if they couldn't think how to use the assets they already had, and they did have two Small companions between kobold sorc and rangers Dire Conure pet if they wanted to take the direct approach)

Result: THESE GUYS ROCKED IT

They were all so smart and kicked so much ass I LOVE THIS PARTY?? The fighter and ranger basically made a choke point to pull the melee dudes and keep them away from the squishy ones (mostly, poor sorc got smacked around a bit), and the casters were very clever with staying back out of those archers' line of sight

Druid used their cover against them by Entangling one behind its stalagmite, so it couldn't move enough to actually get a clear shot at anyone

Sorc was SO CLEVER and I adore what they did here: first they weeded out the bunches of melee grunts with really smart AoE spell use, then, seeing that the spellslingers were going to be a big problem (one kept trying to Frostbite the ranger to force disadvantage and one was using its line of sight past the choke point to dole out Chromatic Orbs and a Scorching Ray and stuff)

They note that the kobolds are on wooden platforms

And they are a Phoenix sorc who loves to arson things that can Be On Fire

So they IMMOLATE THE PLATFORMS, which go up like six month old Christmas trees, and WRECK the spellcasters with incidental fire damage and falling damage, and immediately rob the hardest hitters in the room of cover and a vantage point through clever environment use

The paladin sees this crushing move and uses her Emissary of Peace feature to persuade the kobolds all "hey if you flee into your tunnels and let us pass we'll let you live." This is excellent roleplay because that's SO ON BRAND for the pally, and it's also smart because kobolds are notoriously cowardly, Even Monsters Want to Live, and it saves them the headache of dealing with the archers in those tiny tunnels

But ranger is a headstrong I Must Fight character, and very upset because these kobolds almost killed their pet. The other kobolds all flee, but when the one dragonshield they're fighting tries to bolt, they score a critical opportunity attack and shave off like a third of its hp with a neat backstab

Combat ends. Healing spells are cast, the party gets their shit together, puts out some of the fire, and goes to cross the room

And from within the archer tunnels comes a salvo of arrows and spells, all aimed at the ranger who got in a cheap shot

They're KOed, but the kobolds all flee chittering and laughing, and healing and hit die bring them right back to snuff, with another Good Character Moment had where ranger has to accept help and begrudgingly learns a thing about Sometimes Mercy is Good and it was just. So true to the ranger too

Hello may I request some Good Nests? Which nests are best nests?? Which birbs are most deserving of an honorary engineering degree???

where to start?? so many good nests!

a personal favorite nest is the nest of the quaker parrot (also known as the monk parakeet). these parrots are extremely unusual in that they build communal nests, kind of like apartment complexes. the nest has multiple holes, each leading to a separate “home”. as you can expect, these nests become huge and heavy. this is part of the reason why these parrots are banned in some states - their nests, when build on power lines, can start massive fires.

there’s also the wonderful weavers! there are many species of weavers, and their nestbuilding varies slightly between species. but they tend to make ornate hanging gourd-shaped nests, woven tightly enough to pass as some kind of funky basket!

it would be impossible to forget the incredible tailorbird family! these are birds that can SEW! using spider silk, hair, or other fine threads, they delicately sew a leaf to either form a roof over their nest or make a cup to support their nest. they do this so carefully that the leaf rarely browns around the holes.

hummingbird nests may not look like much at first (ignoring them being extremely small). but these nests are built almost entirely out of fibrous materials like spiderwebs and hair. the nests stretch to accommodate the babies as they grow!

and an honorable mention to the half-moon conure, who builds their nests WITHIN a termite mound! the termites make a protective ‘sealant’ layer around the parrot nest, which protects the young.
