A train of thought I've had in my latest playthrough of Half-Life, Black Mesa, and the Half-Life 2 series:
Okay, so. Headcrabs, right? The little guys who leap onto you and try to eat your face so they can turn you into a zombie.
There were many instances ingame of headcrabs leaping at me, missing completely, and sailing off a cliff, or falling into water and drowning, or various other things. They also ran into other dangers, too, like fire, or electricity. Just absolutely no thoughts head empty, even when they lemminged after each other to their doom. They didn't even react to pain aside from screeching about it, they just trundled along into my gunshots!
And so I thought to myself with an overthinking chuckle: you'd think that creatures which evolved in Xen, a dimension which consists mostly of tiny rock islands suspended in an endless void, would have evolved some sort of "look before you leap" instinct. Like that's how natural selection works. You can get me to suspend disbelief about alien physics, but "creatures who naturally exhibit a behavior which is likely to get them killed are less likely to live long enough to produce offspring than members of the same species who do not exhibit that deadly behavior" is immutable logic! Maybe their reproduction cycle simply produces enough headcrabs per parent that there isn't enough selection-pressure to get them to change, like with sunfish? I dunno, this isn't an actual criticism, I'm just doing a silly overthink of a gameplay thing which is neither trivial nor necessary to change.
But then I wandered into a spot in Water Hazard which had clearly been hit with headcrab-shells, and I thought: wait a minute. Headcrabs are used as bioweapons by both the Nihilanth and the Combine! Maybe headcrabs were less-successful at being weapons if they were actually careful about attacking their targets, so they were altered to just make them completely reckless and to ignore all pain and all that. The poison headcrabs do react to getting shot, presumably because the Combine considers them to be particularly valuable or something. And that's not mutually exclusive with the lots-of-reproduction thing, either -- Ravenholm is jam-packed with zombies but there's only a handful of actual headcrab-shells lying around. Maybe Gordon's HEV suit makes it easier for him to dodge them, too, and headcrabs are much less likely to miss when going after other targets! Yeah, this random gameplay weirdness which it wouldn't have been worth changing totally makes sense!

Half Life 1 is an interestin' game (and the themes go to the entire series, so, uh, spoilers for all of it).
It's a game where there's a certain inevitability to things. Gordon will have to push that crystal into the anti-mass spectrometer. The second he got on the Black Mesa Transit System it became inevitable. Hence why the first time we see G-Man is on that journey.
But, even if it wasn't Gordon, it'd've been someone else. Breen was pushing for it, G-Man was involved in it and his "Employers" were counting on it and who knows what other forces were involved too.
Half Life 1, and Half Life overall, is a linear game series. Most linear games are, when you think about it, inevitable stories. Tram rides. Half Life subtly alludes to this fact. Even the final "choice", also done on a tram, isn't really a choice at all "Do as I say or die".
In Half Life 2 G-Man just outright says it, "Rather than offer you the illusion of free choice, I will take the liberty of choosing for you...", even that illusion was something he was no longer bothered with.
Even with G-Man's is partially impeded by the Vortigaunts, he finds the perfect moment to get to Freeman and to taunt Eli. Unforeseen consequences.
The Vortigaunts blocked G-Man from Freeman, so he went into the past and took Alyx. "A previous hire has been unable — or unwilling — to perform the tasks laid before him. We have struggled to find a suitable replacement. Until now." even linear time cannot stop G-Man from getting his way. Alyx may've been around in 2 and the episodes, but she was already doomed to be the next 'hire'.
The capture was also an 'illusion of choice'. He offered Alyx a "choice", asked her a question "What would you want nudged, Ms Vance?", but he already knew what he would do "What if I could offer you something you don't know you want?".
Though, there's another part right before that line that I cut out "Too large [a nudge], given the interests of my employers.", G-Man is the most powerful singular thing we ever get to see. He's still working under something else.
And, who knows, maybe they're working under something else too.
Gordon got on that tram before he was even playable. G-Man got on his tram offscreen. Whatever is beyond him... must've gotten on a tram too.
An isotope doesn't choose its half-life. The rules of reality dictate it. A half-life character doesn't choose its existence, either. It is dictated for them.
Hmm, a little off-topic conclusion aside: it's really no bloody wonder The Stanley Parable started as a Half-Life 2 mod, is it?

my brain randomly picked today to remember the first Half-Life was originally published by Sierra so I am now imagining if it had been a point-and-click adventure with convoluted puzzles and corny game over messages

This is the first time I've ever actually drawn Scientist 04: Slick, my favourite Half Life 1 Scientist Model. Why did it take me so long t' actually draw him? I was nervous I'd not be able t' depict his beauty properly.

THE VIOLENT URGE TO CORRECT HALF-LIFE MISINFORMATION.
I saw someone spreading that Mr. Friendly (a cut enemy from half-life 1 that was essentially a giant alien penis with legs) was designed by a 12 year old. He was not. He was designed by a 6'2 tattoo covered university graduate. Yes, that same man used to be 12....when he was a child. Ted Backman, an adult man created the penis monster. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

So were all the other system failures at Black Mesa on the day of the resonance cascade All Part Of The Plan?
Like, the G-Man and/or Doctor Breen were clearly trying to do something by pulling strings to get the crystal sample into the test chamber; the G-Man at the very least knew what was going to happen, between his "prepare for Unforeseen Consequences" bit and showing up at Adrian Shephard's base almost two weeks before the resonance cascade. Were all the system failures and network crashes and explosions a necessary prerequisite, or was that just a side-effect or a coincidence or something?

the funniest thing about Half-Life: Source to me is the fact that it was literally made just to see what broke going from goldsource to the source engine and yet they released it as an actual retail product
