Hunca Munca Haley (Graveface) (released 13 October 2023)
Haley used to be known as Haley Bonar who has released any number of albums since 2001. She legally changed her name to Haley McCallum (her mother's maiden name) and then she changed her professional name to the shortened single moniker of Haley (technically HALEY). Her first album under her (sort of) new name was 2018's Pleasureland and it carried the concept of change even further by being an instrumental only album.
This is her first new album in five years (she did have a baby during that time period) and it captured my attention because she returns to Graveface Records, a severely indie imprint that once upon a time I was obsessed with, buying virtually anything that appeared on the label. That is how I discovered Haley's 2011 album Golder and the follow-up Last War which came out in 2014 and was my Album of The Year that year. That follow-up, 2016's Impossible Dream didn't overwhelm me, but that would have been a difficult task considering how crazy I was for Last War.
For those not aware, Hunca Munca is a mouse, a character from Beatrix Potter's book The Tale of Two Bad Mice. Above you see the album cover with a hype sticker. Since I won't remove the shrink wrap, I can't show you a photo of what the cover looks like without that bar code. Graveface did a nice job making the hype flush with the cover so it still looks representative of that cover. Furthermore, that cover (and the back) painting are credited to Herman Mint. That is a pseudonym Bonar uses for her artwork. (I prefer the painting found on Pleasureland to this painting, but that's just me.)
Below you can see the hype sticker in closer detail. (Not that it was mystifying, but I took the shot, so I'm using the shot.)
Below is the insert that is included in the album. The back of the insert is white so I didn't bother shooting a photo of it.
The album comes on hot pink vinyl and you can see my two photos of that bright color below.
The labels for both sides of the record can be found below.
