Saudi Arabia said Sunday that more than 1,300 faithful died during the Hajj pilgrimage which took place during intense heat, and that most of the deceased did not have official permits. "Regrettably, the number of mortalities reached 1,301, with 83 percent being unauthorised to perform Hajj and having walked long distances under direct sunlight, without adequate shelter or comfort," the official Saudi Press Agency reported. An AFP tally last week, based on official statements and reports from diplomats involved in their countries' responses, put the toll at more than 1,100.

Around 1.8 million Muslims were expected to travel to Saudi Arabia for the religious journey, where temperatures this year reached 51.8C in the shade.
At least 550 people have died during the Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in the scorching heat, it has been reported.
Temperatures reached at least 51.8C (125F) in the shade in the Saudi Arabian city, as huge crowds of Muslims undertook the annual religious journey - one of the five pillars of Islam.
"Hajj is a difficult task, so you have to exert efforts and perform the rituals even in the conditions of heat and crowding," an Egyptian pilgrim said.
Pilgrims used umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun, as Saudi authorities warned pilgrims to stay hydrated and avoid being outdoors during the hottest hours between 11am and 3pm.
Stampedes, tent fires and other accidents have caused hundreds of deaths during the Hajj in the past 30 years. Some 240 people reportedly died last year.
This year's pilgrimage began on Friday and as usual coincided with the religious holiday, Eid al-Adha.
Dozens of deaths have been reported during this year's Hajj, with the AFP news agency putting the total at 550, citing diplomats.
Some 323 of the dead were Egyptians, most of whom perished due to heat related illness, AFP said.
A 2024 study by the Journal of Travel and Medicine found that rising global temperatures may outpace strategies to deal with the heat. A 2019 study by Geophysical Research Letters said that as temperatures rise in arid Saudi Arabia due to climate change, pilgrims performing Hajj will face "extreme danger".
A Saudi health official, speaking on Monday before many of the reports of deaths were issued, said authorities had not noticed any unusual fatalities among Muslim pilgrims amid the extremely high temperatures.
The ministry had so far treated more than 2,700 pilgrims who suffered from heat-related illness, he added.
What is the Hajj?
One of the largest mass gatherings in the world, the Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime duty for able-bodied Muslims who can afford it.
Every year hundreds of thousands of Muslims journey to the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and of the religion of Islam.
The Great Mosque of Mecca - Masjid al-Haram - is home to the Kaaba. It is Islam's holiest site and the direction in which Muslims all over the world face when they pray.
More than 1.8 million pilgrims were expected to take part this year, according to the Saudi General Authority for Statistics.

“In India, one of the country’s worst-ever and long-running heatwaves, which finally relented in mid-June, left more than 40,000 people with heatstroke, with over 100 dead. Temperatures approached 50°C, with a night-time low of 37°C, reportedly the highest ever recorded in India,” Climate Central said in a statement. In Saudi Arabia, at least 1,300 people have died from heat-related illnesses during the Hajj pilgrimage. In Greece, the Acropolis in Athens had to be shut due to temperatures above 43°C – very high for this time of year. Among the tragedies brought by the heatwave, six tourists died. The eastern coast of US experienced an intense heatwave. In New York, health officials reported a 500-600% increase in heat-related emergency visits, Climate Central said.

Over 550 Hajj pilgrims die in Saudi Arabia
This year’s pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia is once again taking place amid scorching temperatures, resulting in mass deaths, ABC News reports.
Saudi diplomats specified that at least 323 of the dead were travellers from Egypt. The country’s foreign ministry said Cairo is co-operating with Saudi authorities in the search for Egyptians “missing” during the Hajj.
Diplomats explained that the reason for so many deaths was the huge number of unregistered pilgrims, whose arrival caused chaos in camps to help the faithful.
At least 60 pilgrims from Jordan also died. Tehran officially reported the deaths of five Iranian pilgrims without specifying the cause, while Dakar said three Senegalese pilgrims had died.
A diplomat confirmed that the death toll had risen due to the large number of unregistered Egyptian pilgrims. An Egyptian official overseeing the Hajj mission in the country said:
“They caused great chaos in the pilgrims’ camps, which led to the cessation of services. Pilgrims went without food, water and air conditioning for a long time and died from the heat because most people had nowhere to take shelter.”
Illegal pilgrims
Earlier in June, Saudi officials said they had expelled hundreds of thousands of unregistered pilgrims from Mecca even before the Hajj. According to Saudi authorities, some 1.8 million pilgrims have taken part in the Hajj this year, including 1.6 million from abroad.
Saudi authorities reported as late as Sunday that they were providing aid to more than 2,000 pilgrims suffering from heat stress. On that day alone, they said more than 2,700 cases of “heat exhaustion” had been reported.
Last year’s Hajj also saw mass tragedy with at least 240 deaths recorded, most of whom were Indonesians.
The Hajj is a pilgrimage to the holy sites in Mecca in Saudi Arabia associated with the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Every Muslim, if he or she has the opportunity, should perform the Hajj.

Fucking hell…
Look I know incidents happen during the Hajj from time to time.
Like fistfights or the like. Or that crane collapse a few years back. Among other things.
But this is BAD!

i've heard multiple muslim women talk about being groped on hajj and this awful male muslim influencer responded to it by saying "it's really crowded it was probably an accident" and "that's why you need to travel with a mahram" l o fucking l
#i dont really know how hajj works but couldn't they have a certain time where only women are allowed. or like only women + men accompanied#by women#single women aren't supposed to go on hajj anyway but saudi arabia allows it so.....
