From the Caroline Schimmel Collection, this framed miniature photograph of a deceased young woman is accompanied by locks of her brown hair wrapped around wire to form a floral design. This piece of mourning art is from 1850. Among other treasures, this piece will be on display in the upcoming exhibition of the Schimmel Collection. The opening and conference for *OK, I’ll Do It Myself: Narratives of Intrepid Women in the American Wilderness* will be held September 6th through the 7th. Fun personal fact: I’ve had a lifelong fascination with all things macabre, spooky, creepy, and death/mourning related. This should surprise no one. But one of my truly favorite things is Victorian mourning objects, specifically items made from the hair of the deceased. This piece in the Springfield Art Museum is a wreath made of the hair of more than one family member. It would be collected over time and then wrapped & braided around wire forms. Literally everything you see here is hair. Up close you could see the shade variations & strands. It’s a beautiful, intimate art form that really speaks to the desire to hold on to something physical from a loved one who has gone. I’m not creeped out by this, I absolutely love it. The level of love, attention, and time spent making this is astounding. It’s like a family tree. Sadly, they don’t know who the family members included were, but I’m grateful that someone saved this & preserves the memories of those to whom it belonged...
