Happy new year 2024! Another year to come, another year to go. I'm sorry I haven't done your commissions for a long time, but you know I always have this tradition of compiling everything that came in the year. Honestly I am surprised that this year was full of many exciting things, since I must admit that for me it was a difficult year because of personal problems. But I think I should not complain because there is always someone who has a hard time, as in this case the conflicts in Israel, I do not want to imagine how the holidays have been, so this drawing is dedicated to all the victims of the events and I ask that for next year this will be a simple memory, just as we overcame the tsunami in Japan, the terrorist attacks in France, and recently with the pandemic                 .Honorable mentions:

in this episode batman works with a former acrobat from haileys circus whose life was changed when a terrible murder happened involving the trapeze during a show.

There's something about the rare strongman!Bruce fanart I find that makes me insane. Then I started thinking about it and like? Bruce in the circus would be so good? and really easy to incorporate into a timeline like:

Imagine Bruce runs away at 15

He has just come back from being “transferred” to Gotham Academy from a boarding school

This is accompanied by Alfred expressing his disappointment. Bruce had already been thinking about being a burden and leaving and while in the main timeline he waits til graduating he kinda snaps

He comes across the circus and through means, I don’t think are particularly interesting, Bruce convinces them to let him tag along

“What would the boy do?”

“He could be a strongman.”

Both look over at awkward mid-growth spirt Bruce.

“Really?”

“Ay, he’s got the build for it.”

Bam! Bruce is in the circus.

He’s training to be a strongman but in the meantime excels at other tasks, including but not limited to: 

Juggling, knife throwing, animal handling, tightrope walking etc,

Not to mention already can bookkeep and can pick up languages like popcorn

Essentially good at most things except general clownery and more artistic performances like silks.

The general demographics at either about at least 10 years his senior or his junior.

Kids wise, there's just him and of course 4-year-old Dick

When Dick meets Bruce he’s like “this is my new best friend.” meanwhile Bruce is like “oh fuck, oh fuck, what the fuck do I do with a child”

When Dick is around 8 Bruce is forced to acknowledge that Dick is also his best friend and boy doesn’t that make a 19 yr old feel lame

Despite all this, Bruce is in an environment where there’s no pressure to be a Wayne and gets a clean start, which does wonders for him

Still pushes himself out of guilt and anger but now instead of being shammed for it, the people around him just redirect it

Bruce? Getting a supportive environment to train in? Sure hope that doesn’t destroy the universe

Welp, about that

Bruce stays with the circus consistently for years but disappears for a couple of months when he turns 18 (he went back to Gotham to a) prove he’s fine and b)claim his inheritance. 

Does this for a couple of reasons, one of which is that he finds out the circus is losing money and goes back so he can figure out some kind of investment to help

While there, realizes Gotham has gotten bad and is hit with that classic “oh god I’ve been happy while people are suffering I am a horrible person”

So while he does go back to Hailey’s, he ends up leaving more often as he finds different teachers and is unknowingly, officially on the path to Batman™ 

Right around 20 Bruce straight up fully disappears with barely a word as he ends up involved fully with the League of Shadows

Comes out of it a year later

The next time the circus sees him, they are performing in Gotham 

Good news is, the circus doesn’t get blackmailed/pays off protection

The Grayson’s rope doesn’t snap! Yay!

Bad news: someone tries to blow up the circus during their performance. Not only do the Grayson’s die but also the circus almost has to close down. 

The rest follows somewhat similarly but with nuance I’ve run out of room to go into.

Chris Samnee's art is a phenomenal homage to the classic Batman comics that this is inspired by.

It wasn't until she met two other equally lonely souls that she finally understood,

It turns out that the real circus does not lie in flowers, applause and fame,

It's the joy created by performing with friends.

The bronzing curtain is the symbol of the circus, and the cute dolls are the children's favorite.

With Hailey's childhood memories of the circus, Marina weaves the big skirt into a sparkling curtain.

I will stand by this. Just updates on baby and mom are better than nothing, no matter how much ‘hate’ they get. That’s their problem and issue they’ve created for themselves.

Hailey bieber got so much hate but still kept fans in the loop! People actually had a lot of respect for her from it.

With them it’s just a poor lame excuse for hiding something.

This attitude coming from him only reinforces what people, now, think. His team put up a circus, promising a Broadway concert, brought to the center of the stage, a clown and a pitiful redneck trapeze performing a lousy show and expecting applause. But, the show was a disaster and not worth the ticket and the audience booed both. Now, the public wants their money back. More than fair. But, the clown ran with the box office, because of shame, despite promising more of it, hid behind the curtains from where he continued snooping the audience, expecting the public would leave the tent without their money, while he threw fuel to set fire to the tent hoping the smokers would naturally and consequently do the job of setting fire to the circus for him.

The Starless Sea, Erin Morgenstern (a book about the love of books and story-telling, another great example of this is Cloud Cuckoo Land, by Anthony Doerr but this edges it out just a little in my all time faves. Also consider this a stand-in for Erin Morgenstern's other gem: The Night Circus.)

The Secret History, by Donna Tartt (I always waffle between the dark academia vibes of this or the snowy Amsterdam/dry Las Vegas heat of The Goldfinch - they're both absolute perfection and have gay undertones so they bounce back and forth depending on the day.)

Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides (you know how people use 'sweeping tale' to describe certain books? That's this one. It just whisks you away. I know everything there is to know about the Stephanides clan and I'm a better person for it.)

The Bedlam Stacks, by Natasha Pulley (Honestly, also consider this a stand-in for every Natasha Pulley book there is. Sometimes my favorite is The Half Life of Valery K, sometimes it's The Watchmaker of Filigree Street series, sometimes it's The Kingdoms; it's really whose yearning I'm vibing with the most that day: Valery and Shenkov? Thaniel and Mori? Merrick and Raphael? Joe and Kite? It varies.)

The Stand, by Stephen King (I also really want to put Holly in that spot, I just finished it and I haven't loved a Stephen King book like that since The Stand - the only reason I didn't is because Holly is, at least for now, the last book in a series that is a spin-off of a series and every other book in those series don't hit the level of Holly, at all.)

Anxious People, by Fredrik Backman (this can also act as a stand-in for A Man Called Ove as well since I love them both for the exact same reason - they believe in the best in people. They make you feel better about humanity in general.)

The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune (I will also point out that I have yet to read a TJ Klune book I haven't loved and that is not an insignificant amount now. This one is an older queer love story with the added bonus of found family. It's magical and heart-full and kind)

Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir (Also a big lover of The Martian but this has something extra special for me - the alien was unique and I cared so much about every character that even glanced across the pages.)

Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers, by Jesse Q. Sutanto (I laughed, I loved, I goggled at Vera's incredible ability to bring people together - a more motley crew of people there is not and yet somehow Vera not only makes it work, she makes them family <3)

Special shoutout to Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus, I read this semi-recently (within the last year) so I don't know if my gaga-ness with it will fade or not but right now I'm like: this should absolutely be on this list, I just don't know if that's gonna hold or not. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and the plot is perfect, I just don't know if it's top ten nine perfect, y'know? Also to S.A. Cosby - Razorblade Tears is literally hanging off the end of this list by its fingernails (also read everything else by him because it's all good!).

Ongoing series - that either aren't finished or that I haven't finished so they're not cemented yet (aka Maddie cheats so she can have more spots): The Thursday Murder Club series, by Richard Osman (it's up to four books now and they are absolute perfection - it's a series that believes the best in people, even its villains, no one is allowed to be one note and you never know who it's going to pick up and keep forever), The Monk & Robot series, by Becky Chambers (it's just such a quiet, peaceful little sci-fi series that loves its characters and tea), Empire of the Vampire, by Jay Kristoff (absolutely no notes on the first book, I was stressed out and ravenous), The Infernal War Saga, by Hailey Turner (pitch perfect first two books, I'm obsessed with everyone and, like, borderline too into Honovi and Blaine??), Legends & Lattes, by Travis Baldree (this book is kind and it's found family and it's Cozy High Fantasy, like, who even knew how badly I needed that?! - a prequel is due out next month!), The Expanse series, by James S.A. Corey (okay, I know this is done but I am only through book six, though so far absolutely every one has been perfect), The Amina al-Sirafi Series, by S.A. Chakraborty (the first book is so good, which I am zero percent surprised by because I five-starred my way all the way through The Daevabad Trilogy as well!), and the Susan Ryeland series, by Anthony Horowitz (these mysteries are absolutely right up my alley - because who's investigating them? An editor of the first book's murdered author. I hope he can manage to keep these going because they are so damn good!)
