Went to a meadow

Where friends and lovers relax

Sit and stay awhile

-

Listening to hums

Their words do swim like a song.

Here you can find bliss

-

But your eye catches

those restless souls who have had

their fill of respite.

-

Then you stretch your neck.

Left and right, more and more leave.

Where are they going?

-

Rise and stretch your legs

Are they longer than before?

They do feel stronger.

-

Now which way to go.

Some move in groups, some alone.

You have to decide.

-

But no matter where

your legs take you, you are sure

You’ll leave the meadow

-

Make it to the edge

passing those who lay and wait.

How small they all seem.

-

There are two paths here

one takes you over a bridge

the other, forest.

-

a thicket of trees

with crickets, ivy, and marsh.

Pure chance, idealized

-

Walk a beaten path

the reward is just as worn.

You must blaze anew.

-

Enter the forest

take your chances with nature

she might preserve you.

-

But you understand;

Nature’s a fickle woman.

You’re not in control

-

Keep the tread steady,

Enjoy, but do not loiter

chance makes no promise

-

Or you take the bridge

It’s design reminds you of

the night’s crescent moon

-

There are many stairs

A hard climb, your test of strength

but the end is clear

-

On that crescent bridge

That first stair is the highest

The next few as well

-

Grab the wooden rail

It’s okay to want support

But lift your own feet

-

Your steps get heavy

But the crest is coming near

You must reach the top

-

On the horizon

your respite is well deserved

You have overcome

-

Do not let the view

from the peak make you forget

This is the first bridge

-

Both paths have their ends

Don’t tread too fast, ‘less you miss
