Altadena plein air paintings
Sharing these now under very tragic circumstances after the Eaton fire. I spent 3 uninterrupted blissful weeks up in Altadena back in October on holiday just focusing on painting
Disappearing into the foothills almost every day brought a level of focus and peace that I'll be carrying forward into everything I do. I suspect all the natural splendour and calm I've attempted to capture here will be somewhere between irrevocably destroyed and severely affected for years to come.
If nothing else pls let this be a reminder to help support volunteers and rebuilding efforts! Donate if you can!!

Flint Canyon Trail, 4157 Hampstead Rd La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011
Flint Canyon Trail is a 2.3 mile moderately easy trail that connects Hahamongna Watershed Park and Cherry Canyon, meandering under the 210 Freeway and behind the backyards of La Canada residents. We parked at Hahamonga Watershed Park (there’s much more parking there than at the other end on Hampstead Road) and found the trail head by heading south from the parking lot (towards Devils Gate Dam). The reservoir area is currently being restored, with plans to add native plants. It looks like a wetlands area with a few types of birds.
The trail is mostly dirt and flat but with some inclines. It is used by cyclists and equestrians. The first part that goes under the 210 Freeway was a little sketchy. It seemed like a perfect place for homeless encampments though we did not see any homeless. There was a creek/stream to one side and the trail actually crossed the creek once. There were a lot of flies and shade from trees. As we continued, we entered residential areas and crossed several roads. There wasn’t much to see other than people’s backyards and some oak trees. We got lost once because the trail crossed Woodfield Road and picked up further down the street.
Watch out for horse poop.
3 out of 5 stars.

Perimeter Trail, Southeast corner of Oak Grove Dr. & Foothill Blvd, La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011
The Perimeter Trail is approximately 3.1 miles roundtrip though there are few markers and the area is currently undergoing renovation/habitat restoration. I thought the trail would take me around the perimeter of the Devils Gate reservoir area but it didn’t seem to go all the way around.
I parked at Hahamonga Watershed Park and walked towards Devils Gate Dam. A sign there listed the Perimeter Trail. I crossed over the dam and headed towards the wetlands area. There was a lower trail and an upper trail on the hillside. The lower trail ended by JPL. There were a few smaller trails that one could take to walk around a flat area with lots of rocks.
Watch out for horse poop. There’s a LOT of it. I also saw signs for poison oak and rattlesnakes. There was very little shade. I ran into about 6 people during my walk. There are a few birds in the area, including an endangered one called least Bell’s vireo.
3 out of 5 stars.

Segment A
to decide on it then research what it will take plan an idea of the days make packing lists then set out for a known unknown where fear for isolation set in
where do I turn how will I get there what will the neighborhoods feel like is it going to be busy bathrooms places to refill water
so a Gold Line ride three stops led to a park with a stop where I picked up the JPL shuttle with a driver who didn't know if she passed by my stop... Hahamonga Watershed Park was welcome as was the bathroom and the start from flats lifted straight uphill cresting with stairs to Sacred Heart
the venture continued up and through posh spaces and steep climes until the history of that Rose Bowl sprang to life
Colorado Bridge tournament of Roses House Fork in the road and a beautiful up and down stair set led to MGD at Pasadena's light and power into San Marino continued the clean and manicured with and without sidewalks like my neighborhood but different to Huntington's miles and long straights turning onto an M street an intimidating stair street the first of many to Highland Park and home by way of Harmon
a community I didn't know existed but life is like that you don't know what you don't experience and that reflects perfectly the state we are in

10.3 miles, 2:10:10 moving time, 181 suffer score.
Lynda, Bill, Ben and I met at the Rose Bowl for a long run. It was sunny but chilly 41°F this morning. Ben and Bill took off at a good clip. Lynda and I headed out for 10 miles. The cold and the stiffness kept us at a calmer pace. From the Rose Bowl we headed up to JPL. The outside parking lot has been reclaimed for nature park stuff. The re-striping and re-surfacing is already completed. We stayed on the Hamahonga Trail to the Horse Trough and flipped it. We came down through the dirt trails to Linda Vista. I noticed the trees have really grown tall in the creek.
We met a bunch of dogs along the way. My favorite were the 3 greyhounds. Beautiful, elegant, smart, fast. If I ever get a dog, it will be a greyhound. You know what say about pets and owners… they look and act alike.
I had trouble breathing again. I chalk it up to cold-dry-winter-air-induced asthma. Our route starts with a tough uphill climb out of the Arroyo and a long false flat to Jack in the Box. By the time we get to the Horse Water Trough, I’m fine.
