Hypnovember Day 29: Doctor

*deep sigh*

10th doctor/Simm!Master

No, I will not apologize. :P Some background music if you like.

The message had said very little. "Meet me on Alphacentari XI on Nov 29 2019 at 1pm GST, timeline 6." 

Well, of course timeline 6, the Doctor thought to himself. He wasn't about to find a timeline portal and potentially even regenerate himself as a shrimp based on one cryptic message. 

A honing address followed.

There were only a few beings who knew to be that specific- and less who The Doctor was on entirely good terms with.

He waited a few days until Donna was off the ship visiting family. Then he decided to follow up on the message. Something about it felt very familiar. He decided to proceed with caution. 

When The Doctor got to the address (a house, it turned out), there was a small box with a large red button on it in a basket outside the door. 

Even stranger- a note that said "Pick Me Up and Bring Me Inside".

Stranger still- the note was in Gallifreyan.

To the Doctor's knowledge, there was only one being alive who could write that note. And technically, he wasn't supposed to be alive anymore (although, to be fair, the Doctor was hardly surprised about that part at this point).

The Doctor looked at the box. He smelled it. He scanned it with his Sonic screwdriver. ("Remote control to neural dampener-advanced" it read. Curious.)

This was clearly a trap.

Fortunately, the Doctor was brilliant at traps. He picked up the button-on-a-box and walked inside the room.

As predicted, the Master was standing there. He had the same body as when the Doctor had last seen him, only this time he was wearing a electric collar around his neck. Neural dampener, the Doctor thought. Curious. It appeared to be inactive.

"Master!" exclaimed the Doctor. "Why did you call me here?"

"Look at me" the Master replied, a hard-to-read expression on his face.

The Doctor looked at him. No obvious injuries. Some tachyon particles but that was to be expected. Suit early 21st century Earth- stylish. What was he supposed to...?

The Master sighed. "NO, Doctor. LOOK at me." He tilted his head to the side as if exposing it.

What was his plan? This felt like a trap, but he had given the Doctor some leverage with the dampener. He obviously wanted him to trust him. And- sharing your mind with another Timelord was certainly an act of trust and intimacy. The Doctor hadn't experienced that since....

Well, it had been a long time.

The Doctor quickly shut some doors in his own mind to hide potentially damaging information. Then, he placed two of his fingers on the Master's temple and closed his eyes. The Master closed his eyes as well.

The doors in the Master's mind all appeared to be open. The Doctor quickly scanned for malicious intent but-

Oh.

Oh my.

So that's why.

The Doctor had to admit, it had been far too long. And he had missed this as well.

He sent a mental affirmation.

Then he stepped back, keeping the psychic link intact.

"Master," he resumed. "Why have you called me here? What kind of evil scheme could you be plotting?" He hoped that wasn't too over the top. It felt appropriately Doctor-y. 

The Master smiled one of his wicked conniving (and devastatingly sexy the Doctor thought) smiles. "Ah.  my dear Doctor!” he exclaimed. "How good it is to see you again! And how kind of you to fall into my little trap!" He quickly sent some reassurance over the link.

“Your...trap? asked the Doctor, defiantly. “Shall I refresh you on how many millennia it has been since you’ve successfully trapped me?” 

The Master smirked and advanced toward him. “Oh? Then I guess I shouldn’t tell you about Rose then? How long has it been since you’ve checked in on her?”

The Master had done his homework. No surprise there either, the anorak. He must be aware that Rose was currently trapped in an alternate dimension. 

 The Doctor walked forward to meet the Master, his tone becoming angrier. “What have you done with Rose?” 

The Master sent him a quick burst of glee in response to this menace. With his actual voice, the Master replied nonchalantly. “Nothing Doctor.” His smile widened. “Well...nothing yet. “

The Doctor grabbed him by his lapels. He spoke in his most dangerous tone. “Now you listen to me and listen well, Master. If you harm a hair on Rose’s head, you will understand why beings across the galaxy tremble when they hear my name. Now TELL me WHERE! SHE! IS!” 

The Master shivered. His mouth mouth gasped open and he looked briefly like he was going to lean over and kiss The Doctor.  But- no, not yet. He took a breath to collect himself and stepped back for a moment. Then he continued. “She’s on earth- at a location and time of my choosing. And she will be fine, Doctor-  as long as you do what I say.”

The Doctor glowered. “What do you want, Master?” He spat out the name contemptuously.

The Master was practically vibrating with excitement. “What I want, dear Doctor, is to do some research. See, recently I learned of a Sontarian scheme to use this” he held up a ray-gun like object “to control me. The schemers seemed unusually confident that they could use this Mind Manipulator to ensorcell me, They said they had found a way to make it work on Time Lords. So naturally” he pointed the gun at the Doctor “I want to test and see if that is true.”

This was a patently ridiculous lie- there was no way a Mind Manipulator would work on any being stronger-willed than a human. Even some humans could probably resist it. But still...

“And if I refuse?” asked the Doctor.

The Master cocked his head to the side. “Oh Doctor. There’s no option for refusal. Either you let me test it willingly OR I kill your Rose-bud and test it on you unwillingly. Your compliance would be appreciated but it certainly is not required. Besides,” he moved forward again. “Don’t you want to see if you can resist? What a brave, ongoing storm of a Timelord you are?”

Mmmm this old game. The Doctor loved this game. Of course he knew that he could resist the machine but- that didn’t mean he had to. He quickly separated his internal self into two- a part for the scene and a part observing. 

‘Fine,” he said. “Test it on me. Do your worst. I think we both know what the end result will be.” (In that instant, the Doctor and the Master mentally exchanged some very dirty mental images. The Doctor wasn’t even sure a humanoid body could do that. )

“Very well, DOCTOR” The Master snarled. He turned the machine on and directed it at the Doctor. It made a soft buzzing noise.It also had soft, circular lights kind of like a spiral. 

As expected, the Doctor felt a light tug on his thoughts. He could have dismissed it in an instant  but- that’s not why they were here. He concentrated on the sensation, trying to visualize the machine’s effects working deeper and deeper into his brain, tugging more and more. He could feel the Master deep inside as well, also pulling. He let himself lean into that sensation. 

“Yes Doctor,” laughed the Master maniacally. ”It’s not so easy to resist the Mind Manipulator, is it Doctor? I can already tell how much more difficult it is for you to try. Soon you’ll exhaust yourself and be completely under my power” He sent another wave of his influence into the part of the Doctor’s mind that was roleplaying, encouraging any succumbing sensations he found there.

The Doctor gritted his teeth. “No, I’ll never let you win!” He played a  strange mental balancing act where he both fought and gave into the Master’s power. It had been some time and he was surprised he was still so adept at this.  It was thrilling. He hadn’t found anyone who could actually control him in reality, but it was exciting to experience  those feelings even like this. It reminded him a lot of how he and Koschei used to play when they were in school.

The Master sent Doctor images of what he looked like as he was struggling, letting him feast on his own seeming helplessness. 

It worked. The Doctor delighted to find that he was succumbing more and more. He could also feel the Master pushing further into his head, relishing his own feelings of dominance and power. It was intoxicating to feel both powerless and powerful, entirely in control and taken over at the same time. He projected his growing feelings of weakness back to the Master.

Another push followed. “Oh Doctor! You must be so tired- every part of you aching to give in. Let me help you. Say ‘You are my Master, and I must obey you’ Say it and succumb!”

The Doctor whipped his head left and right, as if struggling to try and resist the beam. The heady push of the Master’s influence thrust further into his mind. He felt like he was being taken. Yes. “You are..” he felt his mouth begin. Then he rallied. “No! No you can’t control me!”

The Master widened his eyes with a hypnotic glare. The Doctor could feel him push even more. “I AM your Master and you will obey me!” 

Oh, the Doctor loved this part. “No!” he cried desperately. “No you can’t make me!” He looked down, trembling. 

“You’re so weak now Doctor. Listen again.” He grabbed the Doctor by his head, forcing him to look deep into his eyes. “I AM YOUR MASTER AND YOU WILL OBEY ME. I AM YOUR MASTER AND YOU..”

The Master repeated this over and over again. The Doctor felt himself starting to break (while simultaneously feeling the Master’s glee and arousal at the sight). He tried not to move his mouth but it was useless. “No! No!  No! You.....ahhh!...You....Yu...YOU ARE MY MASTER AND I WILL OBEY YOU!” 

The Master laughed triumphantly. “AGAIN! I AM YOUR MASTER AND YOU WILL OBEY ME!”

The Doctor had broken, there was no resistance left. “YOU ARE MY MASTER AND I WILL OBEY YOU!” The Master sent him a wave of praise and a picture of how utterly debauched he looked. Fuck, he hadn’t even noticed his mouth was hanging open like that. 

“Again!” said the Master, lording it over him.

“You are my Master and I will obey you.” The Doctor bowed his head, humbled. 

“EXCELLENT, Doctor” said the Master. “Now KNEEL!”

The Doctor felt himself kneel. Knowing the Master’s preferences, he put his hands behind his back. He looked up again.

The Master walked around and inspected him, one hand brushing through his hair. The Doctor leaned into that hand. It felt really good to be touched in this way. 

“Now Doctor,” the Master monologued, “I haven’t really gotten to play with this body yet. It seems to have some...interesting possibilities. Tell me about it.”

The Doctor nodded obediently. “This body is very orally fixated.This body is more ticklish than previous regenerations. This body responds well to pain.”

The Master quirked his eyebrow, both bodily and with a teasing feeling in the Doctor’s own mind.

“Oh? Well then- Doctor,” he started. “Let’s see what this body can do.” He pulled out his laser screwdriver.

The Doctor felt his hearts leap in anticipation. 

It was good to have the Master back.

Dear Future Self - April 13, 22

Dear future self... I’ve done it again. It’s been weeks!  Dang, I just went back and looked and it’s been over a month.. I was just getting back from Whistler. Boy has a lot happened once again. I need to get better at this. I even told myself last week I needed to pop in and catch up but that’s okay.  Where to even start. Things with Trav have been progressing. It was a big roller coaster of emotion and everything for a few weeks. I went from feeling like i was in control, to feeling like I lost everything to somewhat back in control. Basically, he obviously couldn’t get pre-approved. I had emailed because the mortgage was behind for 2 full months, my credit score had plummeted down to a scary 620. I called my lawyer and she got on it and I emailed Vanessa saying that due to Travis breaching the agreement that he had until April 30th to get approved to refinance and if he couldn’t or didn’t, I would be putting the house up for sale period. Well she said things should go through lawyers now and her be left out and she cc’d travis. A week later she said he didn’t get approved so they are selling the houses and going to find a place for Trav to live. Said it would be up on the market around april 15th and she would let me know when the house has sold, which I replied that he wouldnt be able to sell without me as my name is on title. Anyways, theyll be listing by april 30th which the mortgage is at $260k and I dont think we’d have any issue selling for at least $350k. I have arranged with my lawyer to put a Lis pendens on the house as I am coming after him for half the equity due to him fucking my credit so bad especially because I wouldn’t be able to even buy a place with my credit now. Now I’m just waiting. My lawyer has filed the divorce paperwork too now so things are really moving. I’m really just praying and giving it to God that if he would like to bless me with a couple thousand dollars from this house because Vanessa fucked me with the initial price, that would be absolutely amazing.  Work has been alright. Been getting frustrated more often, and with no having cash flow the stress is high. I know its not my company but many, it’s so hard watching it and being in it day to day. I’m also getting a bit annoyed with feeling like my “authority” which is pretty small anyways, is just diminishing. I get that Chrystal got a raise and should be living up to it more by managing me and things better, but sometimes I just wonder. like I know how to do my job and I was doing things before she came, yah she has more experience but I just question sometimes like she makes little comments about doing certain jobs that Im like, girl you don’t even do that, I do and I feel title is so important to her and it comes across aggressive sometimes. I want to learn more, but yea she’s shown me once how to pay GST but when would she ever let me actually do it? Or provide deeper training? I feel a bit stagnant. But i do love my job and I am really blessed for how Danny has treated me so Im really not complaining. 

Speaking of work... and did I not mention a bit ago that I was wanting to pick up a part time job? Well YOUR GIRL HAS ANOTHER JOB. Funny enough Ed posted about needing an assistant which Meliss ended up starting with him but she also was starting a new job within 2 weeks so I reached out and we were able to connect and he was down for me working for him! So since like March 21st? I’ve been working for him. He pays me $25 an hour and I bill him monthly. In the two weeks to end of March I worked around 21 hours so I’ll easily have over 40 hours a month with him. I average about 2-3 hours a night depending, and he’s been adding more tasks over time. So far I think it’s working really well! I’m a bit tired, but I look forward to the long weekend, still just figuring out managing my time but I’m still going to bed around 9:30-10PM so that’s okay. I’m pretty happy and he said it could turn into a full time job if desired so it’ll be really interesting to see how these next several months pan out with everything. Moving? Also looking at that too. Dillon has been scouting, its been agreed that Cody, Dillon and I are looking for a 3 bed 3 bath place together which I think could work. Worries me a bit but my rent would only be $800-$900 so that should be pretty manageable. I’m not in a rush to move yet so really just trying to save what I can while being here until things pan out.  Condo stuff has also been all over the place. It’s a lot to catch up on. We tried to sell but ended up in the hole and would owe money to sell so we’ve just left it and seeing what they do. hopefully nothing comes of it so it doesn’t fall on Meliss but we’ll see, giving it to God to work out. So many possibilities and things that intervene and affect it so really I have no idea.

Taxpayers mature, can save or spend, says finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman - india news

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the government’s budget for the 2020-21 financial year on Saturday, signalling a focus on reviving growth with a new income tax scheme, a push for the rural economy, and some increased spending on crucial issues such as air pollution. Edited excerpts of her interview with HT’s R Sukumar, Mint’s Anil Padmanabhan and Doordarshan’s Ajay Mishra on Saturday. Was this a tough budget to deliver looking at the current state of the economy?The current state of the economy is showing signs of improving. Since July, we held discussions with various stakeholders and made announcements on a weekly and fortnightly basis. From July to December, there has been an effort on several aspects — on December 31, the infrastructure pipeline was announced. There have been continuous and detailed discussions of the finance ministry with industries and the concerned ministries. This budget addresses issues that were left over. We have been working continuously and if these efforts help the general public, we will be satisfied with the efforts.One of the things that was expected from this budget was a stimulus to growth. If you had to pick two or three themes from the budget that you think will really give a stimulus to the economy, what would they be?According to analysis by economists and policy experts, if private investment is not picking up, where does the buck stop? The buck stops at the government’s doors. The government will have to show that it is not waiting for private investments to happen – that will happen when it has to happen. But we have to go about investing. And that’s what we made very clear, saying ‘yes, we will invest and in infrastructure’. I want to put out some things to strengthen this point. The Prime Minister announced this during his Independence Day speech that ₹100 lakh crore will be spent on infrastructure over five years. Soon after that, we had a task force and we looked into details. We consulted states and the private sector and came up with the pipeline of 6,500 projects. Within four months, we were able to come out with a complete pipeline of projects and, in this budget, we are helping that pipeline see the light of the day. I have given enough concessions for sovereign funds that want to come into India but with the added condition that you invest in infrastructure. We have already given ₹22,000 crore for companies that will handhold and direct investments towards these pipeline projects. We are also investing in inland water connectivity projects… With all this, I want to say the expectation that money should be spent in creating assets. A focus visible in the budget is the rural economy and agriculture, where you have pledged to spend ₹2.83 lakh crore. In the 16-point action plan, how will you work with the states? And in the context of agriculture, how do you see it addressing problems in backward and forward linkage?If you look at the 16 points as a continuum, you will see it has been created keeping backward and forward linkages in mind. And in it, the work that needs to be done in agriculture, and the work that needs to be done in agriculture-allied areas – all these areas involve a specific role for the youth. And to give them the requisite skills, skill development authorities have already held several discussions with multiple states. This is why I am saying that the planning for this budget did not start in the last three weeks – it began in July. So when it comes to youth, or allied industries – they follow a principled direction. When you look at the rural economy, one of the things that seem to have helped this year was the job guarantee scheme MNREGA. You originally budgeted ₹60,000 crore but ended up spending close to ₹71,000 crore. This year, the budget estimates are lower than that. Are you expecting enough of a pick-up in rural jobs and rural economy to offset this or will you step in and invest more when a need arises?The principle behind the MNREGA is that, when the need arises, we will give it. But if you notice in my budget speech, I have also mentioned the scheme will be extended for fodder creation. Because today, livestock in many of the water-distressed districts don’t even have fodder. Maintaining livestock is becoming an issue. If it is possible for us to use many of those not-so-fertile land – I wouldn’t say they are barren – to cultivate fodder, your local livestock will survive on it. And that itself can be one of the MNREGA activities. So we have tried to tie up some loose ends with the scheme.One of the other things where there has been a reduction from last year’s budget estimates, is food subsidies. The fact that you also ended up spending less than what you budgeted last year suggests a capacity, utilisation or an implementation problem.It can also be seasonal. Sometimes when people are migrating, and the interoperability that we are bringing in, it can be due to that. I don’t think I will be able to put my finger on what specifically caused it. But it is not a conscious reduction from our side.On direct taxation, what compelled you to create the new slabs for Income Tax? And now for individual tax payers, what will be a better option, in your opinion?The idea behind this move was to make tax filing easier and simpler for the people. They should be able to understand what the tax burden on them is exactly. The myriad of exemptions – 120 exemptions that have piled up over the decades – also creates a problem of revenue estimation for the tax department. Moreover, as a taxpayer, a person needs to turn to a professional to understand what exemptions they should use. Our belief was that ultimately, tax should be simpler and the burden lighter. This is why, I can say that from now, we are beginning on a path to reduce exemptions while also lowering the rate. The total saving because of reduced tax will be high in the new scheme. I have also asked the revenue secretary to issue a clarification note today itself that even in the new scheme, four new exemptions have been added because we do not want to tax the savings people already have. Justifiable, simple, straight-forward exemptions have been added to the new system.So the idea is over a period of time, all exemptions will go?Yes, we want to remove gradually everything called exemptions. I am not waiting for a golden day to do it, but have started the process by offering a new stream. I am not forcing people – you can continue to be where you want to claim exemptions. But gradually, when exemptions go, I will also give an attractive rate.Do you think the tax changes that you made will be significant enough to impact consumption?Yes, I am giving you an example. A person with a salary of ₹15 lakh per annum will save ₹78,000 and he will have to use that money – either in savings or in consumption. So what about the fear that some people have that savings are gone altogether?I don’t want to believe that a taxpayer will have to be goaded to save. A taxpayer is smart enough, intelligent enough, responsible enough to take a call on how much he wants to spend or save. We should trust him to that extent. On the tax issue, the new charter appears to be the first time a government has gone out and said that taxpayers have the right to not be harassed. Can you tell us a little bit about this?I have gone around the country talking to tax administrators and said that, ‘yes you have a target to collect revenue but please don’t overreach – we have been assuring taxpayers’. All that is on one level, but the Prime Minister himself has wondered if we really respect the taxpayer. Hence, we thought if we are clear about the intention, why should we not put into law? If my research is right, there are only three countries that have it in their law itself – Australia, USA and Canada. I am glad we have joined that league to assure taxpayers that this government’s intention is to trust wealth creators and taxpayers. You took a leeway of 0.5 percentage point to raise the fiscal deficit target from 3.3% to 3.8%, and you say you will, moving forward, return to a path of fiscal discipline. What does the budget say to domestic and international investors?You are referring to the FRBM act – and since circumstances now needs us to increase spending, this has been a deliberate decision. We have also had issues with revenue generation, since GST collections had not been up to the target for a few months this year. Given both of these circumstances, we have utilised the forbearance clause . Otherwise, we would not have been reflecting the truth. If you look at all the numbers, there is a level of pragmatism. Some of the tax receipts you are estimating this year are lower than last year. You think they are achievable?Yes, corporate tax cut will have show after a time lag. But I have to bear the brunt in showing that I lost the money today. If I am able to come back to some discipline in fiscal deficit by saying 3.5% in the budget estimate, it is because I expect revenue generation to improve.The nominal growth expectation of 10% is the lowest in a long time.It is realistic, I think. Because we don’t want to give an impression. In fact in the House when I said this, some members misunderstood so I had to repeat that it is nominal GDP growth.How will you define this budget, as a matter of a central theme?On social media, the ministry ran a hashtag – JanJanKaBudget. That was the objective, to touch every section. And also to send the larger message that this is a responsible government, it knows its limitations and its responsibilities. It is also a government that knows that only half of India’s potential is being utilised. We will do whatever it takes to encourage the utilisation of the country’s full potential.One very big strand of your budget has been this emphasis on market forces. To give you an example: normally where FMs would have used the fiscal space to spend more, you have chosen the option of cutting taxes and giving power to individuals and companies on how they spend. Is this a seminal shift in the ideological approach to budget making?It is a shift to suit, and in line with, our ideology. The government has to do only as much as is expected from a government. The PM made this clear when he said—government should have an impact but not make you feel indebted, the government’s role cannot be overwhelming. If I have to constantly spend, collect, it is never going to end. You will never be able to work out a mechanism through which the economy can drive itself at a pace at which it can move, not generate too much heat and at the same time be sustainable in the way in which it moves forward. Most of the things where we are putting our equity, we are also saying it should be in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. We are also saying that states will also have to be in it. This whole idea of only the central or state government (will spend) no longer works. It has to be all three together. Where I have land, I give you land. Where I have power generation capabilities, I give that but where others will have to come in, they will.Similarly in railways, some of the prime routes are suffering because net collection has not been improved nor is cross-subsidy any longer justifiable. You can’t leave the poor (paying) high rates. Some of these routes will be given out in PPP model. Bengaluru suburban is using railway tracks around the city; the decision between the state and us is that it should be on metro pricing model. It can’t be railway subsidising tickets and the (state) government running it. That is just not sustainable. In everything that we have announced, the directional change in which that project will have to run for itself (is made clear); eventually (it will have to) be sustainable on its own, is the plan.Even in infrastructure, this sovereign wealth fund, instead of the classic model of the government going out and investing money you have created the space for them to come in and made it very attractive for them…We have given them enough incentive. We have made sure that the money they earn over interest and other things will not be taxed, provided they spend on infrastructure, provided they lock in for a certain number of years. It is not like it’s just been given. Every single word uttered in the budget has gone through different layers and all of us will own it up. The time that the PM has given to see that they are falling in place is amazing.The other thing that we have noticed in the last five years is that the public sector is no longer what your political opponents call ‘family silver’. In this budget, you have taken it to a different level. You are trebling your disinvestment receipts. Are we seeing another big shift? Yes. If you have noticed, I have said that money from disinvestment will go to the companies which are going to be investing in long-term infrastructure. Sale of ‘family silver’ is not going for revenue expenses, it is going towards greater asset creation, responsible disinvestment, responsible sale, if at all, of family silver. That is again being put towards asset creation. That asset which you no longer can run efficiently and make profit is clearly offloaded, but here we put (the receipts) into the infrastructure pipeline. The two companies which I’ve mentioned will receive the funds. They will take the money. It is a responsible way in which public expenditure is being handled.So you are saying it won’t be used to balance the fiscal deficit or to finance it?No, I have very clearly told you that this is how it is going. Is that a general off-the-cuff remark? The $2,000 Bunk Beds - Part Four

So, where were we? Oh yeah there was an electrical burning odor in the air, and the light was on but not turning off. What a great place to be! Sigh. With militaristic precision, I called for my wife to flip the circuit breaker back to off. Knowing what I must do, I asked her to keep the kids out of the room while I ran to my favorite store, Lowes. About 5 minutes, and $5 later, I was walking out with a new light switch in hand. Asking Kati to, yet again, corral the kids and ensure that the circuit was still off, I got to work. When the power is off, light switches and outlets are quick and easy tasks. This one was no different. I set the switch to the on position and put it into the wall.  So we found ourselves facing, yet again, another moment of truth. With the kids in the living room anxiously awaiting the outcome I stood in the room. Glaring at the light I asked my beloved to flip the circuit. In a flash, the light came on and was bright! I walked over to the wall, confidently out stretch my hand, and flip the light switch. This time there was an exclamation for my wife as it was a pop at the circuit breaker and she informed me that the panel was now buzzing. Hearkening back to what my dad told me when I was eight, I knew what I had to do. 

Sometimes it takes me a little longer to realize that I am beat.

Begrudgingly I called Woodfin, a local electrician and HVAC company here in Richmond Virginia. They've done a lot of work for us in the past, and I've always been awesome with what they do. Thanks to the busy time of year, we were told they would be about a week before somebody come out. I explained that I have three children ages 5 and under, 1/3 of my house was without power, and the electrical panel has a horrible buzzing sound whenever power was running through it. Someone was there within an hour. Electrician that came told me that he has seen it all, and this is actually pretty common here in Richmond. Between the houses built in the 70's, a bunch of "fixes" and "upgrades" done between the 80's and 90's, and just general "craftsmanship", having electrical issues is pretty common. He diagnosed that there was a long-standing problem with the circuit breaker. Apparently, I don't know why, but installing a new light pushed the old circuit breaker beyond its breaking point. He helped sort out spaghetti monster like nest that I found when I remove the ceiling fan, it only contained one always live wire. In order to make sure that our house did not burn down he put in a couple of temporary replacement breakers. He also helped me make sure that everything was in working order before he left.

Woodfin descended upon my home two weeks later.

So after 2 weeks, over $2,000 later (beds $500, light $30, new switch and cover $5, replacing the entire electrical panel and breakers $1800), my kids now have an amazing bunk bed without a ceiling fan and light switch that works. I hope that this journey has brought some humor to you, in hindsight it has for me. I think the most important thing that you, my dear readers, can take from the story is the fact that you should always know what you can and cannot do. You need to know who you can call when you reach a point that help is needed. Most importantly, always over budget every single project. This is my haphazard attempt at giving you guys part four, I had a really good one written the other day. The Interview

“…Pass.”

“Please?”

“No.” Samantha Traynor crossed her arms, stopping her work at the galaxy map console. She shook her head for emphasis, black hair sweeping across her nose.

“Come onnnn,” Diana Allers coaxed, drawing out that last word with a slight whine. “Cortez, Daniels and Copeland all agreed. I’m just missing my favorite Comms Specialist.”

“I think you mean the ‘only Comms Specialist that can stand you,’ Allers.”

“Same thing! That’s why you’re my favorite!” The reporter leaned in close to touch Sam’s elbow. “Come on, Traynor. I won’t bite. …Hard.” Diana’s voice was husky with promise.

Sam jerked her elbow away. “Lies don’t become you, Allers. I’ve seen your segments grilling the Commander about her calls. If that’s how you treat the lady responsible for covering our arses, God knows how you’ll treat her crew.”

The thought of Diana digging into Steve’s past in particular made Sam’s jaw clench. That man has been through enough, losing his husband to the Collectors.

Maybe I should go just to protect that sweetheart from the mean ol’ reporter.

Sidling between Samantha and her console, Diana clasped her hands pleadingly. “I promise I’ll behave. This isn’t gonna be some exposé on your sordid—or otherwise—personal lives.” Allers winked.

Sam narrowed her eyes at the woman. “Or Shepard’s?”

“Or Shepard’s,” Allers confirmed. “And that is saying something about my journalistic integrity, because I am dying for details on yours and Jane's… 'extracurriculars.’” Her fingers curled in air-quotes.

Cheeks reddening, Sam cleared her throat awkwardly.

Walked into that one, Traynor.

“…Look, my editor challenged me to shine a light on the Normandy crew for my next Battlespace piece. Humanize you all a little, so the rest of the Alliance doesn’t feel like their contributions don’t matter unless they’re Commander fucking Shepard, super SpecTRe.” It was Allers’ turn to cross her arms, a thoughtful smile on her lips. “Please, Sam. We need all the morale we can spare. The war isn’t going well.”

Sam chewed her cheek, still skeptical. But she could feel her resolve weakening.

Damn that reporter and her occasional glimmer of human decency.

Diana continued, “What would you say to dinner and drinks at Purgatory, then? On the ANN’s dime? I’ve got a hefty per diem burning a hole in my pocket.” She fished a credit chit out of her dress jacket pocket to wave seductively at Sam.

“Resorting to bribery? That’s low, Allers.”

“'Bribery’ is such a dirty word, Traynor. The ANN prefers 'compensation for credible sources.’ Quid pro quo. You scratch my back, I fill yours with booze and bar food.” The reporter paused. “…come on. Copeland agreed. Copeland. And he still hasn’t forgiven me for that Terra Nova piece. You gotta come.”

Samantha let the awkward silence build for a few seconds before an acquiescing sigh.

Making a victorious fist-pump motion, Allers immediately fired up her Omni-tool. “Yes! Meet me at the bar at 1930. I should be done with Cortez by then. I’m trying to stagger the one-on-ones, then have a group interview around 2100.”

Sam immediately regretted her decision as she felt a ping to her wrist. A navpoint paired with a calendar reminder popped up on the holo-screen. “Wait! I didn’t actually say I'd—!”

But Allers had already breezed past in large strides toward the bow docking hatch. Her camera drone floated behind her dutifully. “Thanks again, Traynor! You’re a doll! And try to dress up a little. Who knows, if you play your cards right you might end up with a fan following! An embassy secretary got her own reality show after a piece I did on her. Married a famous bioti-ball pitcher. …Trashiest social network feed I’ve ever seen, and I’m networked to that Westerlund clown, Al-Jilani. …See you tonight, Sam!”

“Fan following?" Sam thought as she watched the woman disappear around the corner out to the Citadel Docking Bay. The thought of becoming Famous did elicit a giddy feeling in Sam’s chest.

…Whoa there, Traynor. If you want to be famous right now, just tell everyone you’re dating Commander Jane Shepard. All you have to do is sell out the love of your life to the news media for a few credits and endorsements. In the middle of a galaxy-wide war.

She scowled at herself for that shitty, childish thought.

Never in a million years.

Then you’ll have to settle for giving Allers a couple feel-good soundbytes about how essential data analytics are to the war effort.

Her nose wrinkled a little less. That's right. If not for comms specialists like me, we never would have saved Grissom Academy or tracked Kai Leng to Horizon.

That’ll have them lining up at the recruitment centres for sure, Traynor.

Finishing up a real-time data lag assessment for the Normandy’s next set of missions, Sam leaned backward in a luxurious stretch. She felt a few satisfying pops in her lower spine.

She fired up her Omni-tool to check the time. 15:48:55 GST. Just enough time to hit the showers and smooth out the wrinkles in her dress blues.

Club Purgatory was calmer than usual. The bar on the left side was always open (of course), but absent was the usual revolving clientele of dancing civilians and rowdy servicemen/women. Familiar thrumming house music was at a surprisingly bearable decibel for a change, too.

Skimming the upper balconies, Samantha spotted the reason for the change. Aria T'Loak, the ruler of Omega, was deep in conversation with a semicircle of trusted underlings. A holo schematic of Omega was visible between the shoulders of stern human, batarian and krogan mercenaries. It looked like the asari was finalizing her preparations to remove the Cerberus forces occupying the chunk of rock she called home.

A familiar, scowling bodyguard was posted at the upper stairwell, his four black eyes shifting from the reporter at the bar over to Sam herself. Adjusting her dress jacket, Sam flashed an innocent smile as she cut a wide berth away from the batarian towards the bar.

The sound of laughter grew louder as Sam approached a seated Steve Cortez and a standing Diana Allers at the bar. Floating behind Diana, a camera drone focused on Steve who was finishing off a frosty beer.

"—pard is still one of the worst Mako pilots I’ve ever seen. And Vega has crashed a Kodiak into Mars. That’s how low that bar is, and Shepard is still worse,” he chuckled while Diana wiped away a mirthful tear.

Allers tapped at her Omni-tool, still giggling. “Oh thank God I recorded all of that. I need to find the perfect segment to showcase 'Commander Jane Shepard: Humanity’s Best Hope While Also Humanity’s Worst Pilot.’ My ratings will be legendary.”

Cortez raised his glass at Sam as she tiptoed up behind the reporter to take a look at her Omni-tool, currently playing back the end of Copeland’s interview and the beginning of Steve’s. Even the grumpy Ensign seemed relaxed, though Sam suspected the shot glass in his hand was credited for that feat.

Samantha hissed in Diana’s ear as she flicked the woman’s shoulder. “Ohhhh, I see the game afoot, Allers. Get everyone good and legless on plonk then film the results. Bloody despicable you are.”

Mumbling under her breath something about “Jesus Christ you’re so British,” Diana shot a glare over her shoulder at the Comms Specialist. “It’s just to grease the wheels a little, Traynor. Plus, it’s a magical learning experience. Gabby prefers wine, Copeland just throws back shots, and Cortez here is a pilsner man. I’m dying to know what your poison of choice is. I’m guessing… cheap vodka.”

Sam gasped with mock offense. “You slander my honor, madam.”

“Only one way to find out.” The reporter extended a fist and knocked on the counter to flag down the turian bartender, who nodded familiarly at Diana.

He grinned at Sam, rumbling, “Another one? Tab’s still open, Allers. You’re putting my kids through college.”

Still fiddling with her holo-recording, Diana barely looked up. She just stuck a thumb behind her at Sam. “Get this one whatever she wants. And make it a double.”

Samantha tapped her chin, an index of cocktails running through her mind from her Fishbone Pub days back at Oxford. She snapped her fingers when she recalled a favorite (and expensive) concoction: “One Quad Kicker please! All top shelf, hold the curry powder. I’m allergic. I don’t think my 'date’ would fancy me asphyxiating to death in the middle of our interview.”

“It would be tough to explain to my boss, yes,” Allers agreed as she held her credit chit up to the bartender for another scan. “My ratings would probably go through the roof… until Shepard tossed me out an airlock.”

The turian nodded in confirmation and busied himself with smoothly mixing the requisite ginger ale, bourbon and spiced rum in a chilled highball glass. The drink was slid over to Samantha with a picture-perfect wedge of lime on the side.

Hmph. Show-off.

It was bubbly and sweet and strong, just like Sam remembered as she moved along the counter over to Cortez.

“Good to see you, Traynor,” Steve said warmly as he clinked his beer against Sam’s drink in silent toast. “And not just because I had a bet going with Copeland if you’d show tonight. …I won.”

Those bloody tossers, Samantha scowled before shrugging it off with another sip of her drink.

“…You’re in a good mood, Cortez,” Sam acknowledged, squeezing his shoulder.

“I’m good, Sam.”

She squinted skeptically at the pilot.

Cortez just smiled back, thin black scruff framing white teeth. His eyes had a crinkle to them that she hadn’t seen before. “Really. I’m good. I mean it, for once. I’ve been talking it out—with Shepard, of all people—and I said my goodbyes. I finally actually believe that I’ll be okay someday. Okay to move on. It seems possible.”

“I’m glad. I was rather worried about you. …Especially with this vulture stirring up trouble,” Sam said a little louder.

Allers’s eyes never left her Omni-tool, but she did extend her right hand off to the side to shoot Sam a middle finger. “I heard that.”

Cortez drained the last swallow of beer from his glass and stood up to offer Sam his seat. He threw a thumb in Allers’ direction. “She’s all right, too. …Fashion taste is terrible, but her heart is in the right place.” He winked at Sam when Diana squawked an indignant “Hey! Not you too!”

“Any advice?”

“Just dive in and get it over with,” Steve said sagely as he patted Sam’s arm. “Like ripping off a band-aid.”

Diana warned behind them, “Careful with all the shit-talk, Normandiers. I know where you bunk.”

In a very ladylike manner, Samantha stuck her tongue out at the reporter. “We know where you bunk, too, Allers.”

A flirty retort from Allers. “Oooo, I’m intrigued, Traynor. You’re welcome to mix my pleasure with your business anytime. Bring Shepard, too.”

Sam rolled her eyes. Smart arse.

A slap to her shoulder brought Sam back. Cortez checked his Omni-tool before straightening his dress jacket. “You two ladies play nice. I’ll go round up Gabby and Eric and see you back here at 2100 hours.”

Diana nodded in thanks while Sam settled in to his (warm) seat at the bar. She took another long swig of her Quad Kicker.

Eyeballing Samantha’s tall glass of liquor, Steve added, “Try not to get into too much trouble.”

“I promise nothing.”

He fixed Sam with a hard stare. “…I’ll tell Shepard.”

“…I promise I won’t get into too much trouble.”

“Good woman. See you later, Traynor. Allers.” Steve gave the reporter a casual salute before heading for the exit.

Sam shifted her attention back to her “date,” who was now preening into her camera drone and checking her lipstick. Allers threw over her shoulder, “Hope you’re ready to start, Traynor.”

Eyes widening, Sam quickly drained her glass. Her lips smacked as the tart alcohol settled in her stomach.

Oh, that was a genius idea for the woman afraid of public speaking, Traynor.

Maybe if I drink enough, you’ll finally be quiet.

Allers licked her finger, leaned over, and tamed down a flyaway hair at Samantha’s temple. Omni-tool at the ready, she turned to finalize the position of her camera drone. “Perfect. Now… this is just for set-up. Say your name, rank and what you do on the Normandy.”

“Do I look at you or the camera?”

“Just look at me, Traynor. Pretend the camera isn’t here.”

Easy for you to say.

“Uhh, Samantha Traynor…" What rank am I again? …How do you forget that?! …Shit! Shit! "Lieutenant Comms Specialist?”

Diana tilted her head, her nose wrinkled in amusement. “You’re just adorable when you’re flustered. …Relax, Sam. This isn’t live. I’m editing the shit out of this… obviously.” Her demeanor softened. “I promise I would never put you or the Normandy crew in a bad light. So just… relax. Deep breaths. Try again.”

Damn Allers and her human side.

Sam followed suit, inhaling in and out her nose slowly for a few seconds. “…Lieutenant Samantha Traynor, senior Communications Specialist, Human Systems Alliance.”

Swiping at her Omni-tool, Diana grinned. “Perfect. See? Now, tell me-slash-the audience: what does a comms specialist do all day?”

“Most of the time, I analyze incoming communications from multiple sources to create a situation GUI.” Sam could feel her saliva drying up as her talking speed increased.

Relax, Traynor.

“And for the people at home who don’t know what that is? In layman’s terms?”

Oh right…

“Oh, uh, well…” Sam had to stop and think. “…I do a lot of the prep work to help Commander Shepard select what task to complete next. Basically: I figure out what’s most urgent based on data available from a variety of criteria, such as when a particular communication came in or how credible it is.”

The reporter smiled in encouragement. “Great. What sort of background is involved in being a comms specialist?”

“A lot of math,” Sam replied immediately.

“…That’s it?”

Repeating for emphasis, Samantha leaned forward. “A lot of math. Quantum entanglement theory, probability theory, a smattering of cryptography, a strong background in physics, plus some mechanical engineering to make actual repairs or adjustments to comm devices, cabling and power sources.”

“Sounds fascinating,” Allers said with polite interest.

Sam couldn’t help but make a face at Allers’ professionalism, though she managed to bite her tongue against outright sarcasm.

You lying sack of—you’ve told me to my face that me talking about my job helps you get a good night’s sleep.

The reporter only smiled back with a glint in her eyes, like she knew what Sam was thinking. Allers proceeded with her line of questioning, though she gestured at the bartender for another drink. “What’s the most rewarding part of being a comms specialist?”

All the math?

No.

Being next to Shepard?

No. …well, yes, but probably not best to say to thousands of viewers.

…Helping people?

Uhhh…

“I guess I really love solving problems,” Sam slowly admitted. “Both mathematical and actual. Sometimes using math to solve an actual problem is highly satisfying.” Pausing briefly, Sam noticed Allers make a subtle roll of her wrist paired with a desperate plea in her eyes.

Oh right, this is supposed to be inspiring people.

“And, uh, even better when those solutions can save lives in the process?”

Allers chuckled. “Try again, without the question at the end. Heavily edited, remember.”

“And even better when solving a problem saves lives in the process. Just the best feeling, that,” Samantha amended. She reached out greedily for the Quad Kicker refill that had appeared at her elbow.

“Great. What’s it like working on an active ship?”

“Oh, it’s bloody terrifying.” At Allers’ wide-eyed expression, Sam stammered out a clarification. “It's—It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, honestly. I spent my career up to this point doing research, so the real-world application has been… a learning curve. But like I said before: highly satisfying. Unlike research, you get to see the difference you make firsthand in real-time rather than after-the-fact in someone else’s report.”

It went on like this for close to 45 minutes. Samantha guzzled drinks (how many? 3? 4?) in between questions, and even managed to give answers that weren’t dreadfully stiff or stilted. She wasn’t all that confident any of her answers would be useful to Allers, however.

Diana was optimistic. “A good editor can make anything interesting, Traynor. That’s where wars are won: not with the play-by-play but on the editing floor.”

“Hmmmmph,” Sam lazily slurred. “I feel like I should make a wager to call you a liar, but I’d basically be betting against anyone joining up to become a Comms Specialist. Which seems… unflattering at best and heartlessly dickish at worst.” The alcohol in Sam’s stomach started dispersing a little and she felt her cheeks warm.

Uh oh.

“Even if you win, you’d lose,” Allers agreed with a slap to Sam’s back, which made Sam’s insides lurch. “You’re overthinking it like usual, Traynor. I’m not trying to convince everyone to enlist right this second. But you might help someone—just like you—who is on the fence to give it a second look. That 'hey, that’s something I’m interested in but never thought it could help out the war effort’ that doesn’t always make the flashiest Alliance recruitment vid.”

Scoffing, Samantha drained the last of her latest drink. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Communications is plenty flashy. The flashiest, I’d say.”

A skeptical shout at Sam’s elbow made her jump. “Oh really?! Wanna put credits on that, Traynor?”

Turning, Sam saw Gabriella Daniels, Eric Copeland, and Steve Cortez all crowded behind her. All three were adorned in their dress blues, though Copeland had unbuttoned his jacket some. It was Gabby who had leaned over the bar, a challenging glint in her eyes.

“Credits? Absolutely not,” Sam said with a smack of her lips. “…drinks though?” She waggled her empty glass at the bunch.

A set of well-manicured nails waved into Sam’s peripheral vision. Allers’s voice was laced with irritation. “Hey! We had a deal, Normandiers: interview first, drinking second. And I consider 'dick measuring’ part of the second part, Daniels.”

Gabby grunted out an acknowledgment, though she pointed two forefingers at Sam then back at her own eyes.

“I’m watching you” my arse, Daniels.

Allers’ hand swiped over her Omni-tool for a moment. “…Great, and I’ve just been informed that our benevolent hostess is opening the club up to the public at 2130 so we gotta bang this out quick before the unwashed masses come clawing back in here.”

Samantha leaned in her chair slightly to look past Allers at the VIP section just up the stairwell. Aria T'Loak and Company did look they were wrapping up their mercenary meet-and-greet. The holo screens had been replaced by trays of tall drinks which were being sampled in celebration. The asari had taken up her usual post on her couch, expression disinterested yet haughty.

“All right—Copeland, button up your jacket—I’ve got a couple group questions. It would be great if you could all pretend you’re a big happy Normandy family,” Diana instructed as she repositioned her camera drone to accommodate the need for a wider angle.

In the meantime, Gabby made a big show of trying to wrap her arms around Sam’s and Steve’s necks in an awkward strangle of a group hug. The two of them working together managed to pin Gabby’s hands under an armpit each.

“So how—knock it off!—how do your roles work together on a ship like the Normandy?” Allers asked with a scowl at the end.

Gabby chimed in first, though her voice was noticeably strained from the unseen discomfort she was in. “It’s all about… teamwork. It can be easy to get lost in the day-to-day of repairs or maintenance. But with a Commander like Shepard at the helm, we’re always trying to improve.”

Kiss-arse.

Sam tried to clamp her arm closer to her body to tighten her grip on Gabby’s left hand as she chimed in. “Oh yea, I often consult with Daniels here about reducing drive core interference or Cortez on upgrades to the Kodiak. We’re a well-oiled machine of collaboration and all that.” She felt the woman’s fingers start to wiggle in an attempt to tickle Sam.

Damn it, I didn’t think this through.

Sam had to stifle a giggle while the lightheadedness from all the alcohol started to kick in… hard. The engineer managed to jerk her hand free from Sam’s grasp.

“All under the watchful eye of your favorite Ensign, of course,” Copeland said with a hiccup. “Who else can wrangle you bunch of slackers?”

I’m not the only one who’s had too much to drink…

Wait, wasn’t his interview like 2 hours ago? …did he ever stop drinking?

It’s like why tax us to fix the roads when they already have nearly $1 per gallon in fuel taxes to fix the roads and infrastructure? Someone the other day asked me if I could do a better job than Obama as president, taunting me, I told him point blank; In My Sleep! And that is the god’s honest truth.

There is NO EXCUSE for the nonsense, waste, or corruption like a (plausibly deniable) movement of taxpayer’s money to all the political friends in or of Washington DC. And if we cannot do better than this, we don’t deserve this great gift of our nation. Of course, if we keep business as usual someday we won’t.

Bali: Day 6

Friday April 7th, 2017

Breakfast: Complimentary Asian omelette with chicken & rice via room service Lunch: leftover ribs from Bo & Bun Dinner: Pizzas from Hanks Pizzeria (re-visit)

Well, today was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions! We started the day off with an early brekky in hopes of getting out an about, to make more of the day. That did not happen. We ate brekky and then I had a nap. Today, Tommy was super keen to visit the Super Human Fitness Centre and we finally got out of the house, rocking our gym gear, at 11.45am. We took a cab, because of the heat, and had to wait an abnormal amount of time for one to pull over; usually they’re hassling you as they drive past. BEEP BEEP! Taxi? You need a ride!?

We got to SHFC 10 minutes later and were both a little bit underwhelmed with the size. We were both envisioning a building similar to Bounce INC in Australia. This was just a small, old building with no windows or doors. The tunes were pumping though! We were greeted by two Indonesian boys, no older than 20 and paid 200,000 IDR to have a private, 1 hour, parkour training session. We started off with a warm up, then learned how to jump and tumble. There was no aircon, just industrial fans, and Tommy got hot very quickly. We were both sweating profusely. We then moved on to learning how to hang on walls “like when you jump and you don’t know if you make it to the other side”. By this point, Tommy was getting a bit overheated and agitated that he couldn’t enjoy himself because he was so hot. We stopped so that he could splash some water on his face, but it didn’t help. After 15 minutes of trying to cool down, we decided to call it a day and Tommy would come back again before we went home. The 2 boys were both very understanding but said we had to try the foam pit jump before we left. It was at least a storey high, but we both gave it a go. Tommy did a forward roll off the ledge and I was meant to do a bomb, but did a pin drop instead – big mistake. I hit the foam and felt my spine crunch behind me. Instant pain. Tommy was filming me and laughing, but then realised I was in pain as one of the boys helped me out. I felt like an idiot.

We got a cab back to our villa and as soon as we got inside, I started crying. I was in pain, I was scared that it was going to get worse and was worried that it was going to ruin the rest of our trip if I couldn’t walk. Luckily, I was travelling with a rehab trainer and Tommy was able to release some of the tension in my back. He also gave me 2 Xanax and told me to have a snooze while they kicked in. 3 episode of Parks and Recreation later and I didn’t feel like the Xanax had done anything, but the pain had died down a little bit. Tommy was watching Deadpool on TV, so I ate my leftover ribs for a late lunch, then had a shower, got dressed and we decided to go out for dinner.

Tommy hadn’t eaten since breakfast, so was very keen for food. We went back to Hank’s Pizzeria for dinner and got a pepperoni and Bolognese pizza with two frozen Cokes. We then decided to stop at a bar that we’d walked past every night so far and were keen to try. We got 4 cocktails at Red Carpet Champagne Bar because the girl told us that it was Cocktail Happy Hour with all cocktails at 85k each. We were welcomed with ice cold water and frozen towels – delightful! We thought the bill would come to 340k + GST, but it came to 485k. We questioned the waitress and she said that our cocktails were not part of the special – how convenient. We left a little pissed off and decided to try shopping again.

Because we couldn’t hook our laptops up to the TV in our villa, we stopped in a DVD shop, that we’d scoffed a few nights earlier, and bought 5 “new releases” for $5 AUD. We then looked in a few shops for long sleeve Nike shirts that we’d seen in Kuta and found some without “just do it” written on the sleeve – Woohoo! Tommy bought 3 and I bought a sleeveless jumpsuit - we haggled the dude down from 8.5 million to 320k – bargain! Feeling very chuffed, we decided to keep going. We got a Nike singlet for me and a pair of shorts for 100k a few stalls down and left feeling very happy with out purchases.

We stopped at Moxx on the way home for our nightly foot massage – love those girls! I told them how I had hurt my back and one of them offered to give me a shoulder massage for 5 minutes for free. What a sweetheart ☺

We fed Meowmix on our way home and then Tommy battled with the DVD player for 15 minutes so that we could watch Mike & Dave need Wedding Dates. Today turned from pretty shitty to pretty good ☺

The Interview (work in progress)

“…No.”

“Please?”

“No.” Samantha Traynor crossed her arms, stopping her work at the galaxy map console. She shook her head for emphasis, black hair sweeping across her nose.

“Come onnnn,” Diana Allers coaxed, drawing out that last word with a slight whine. “Cortez, Daniels and Copeland all agreed. I’m just missing my favorite Comms Specialist.”

“I think you mean the ‘only Comms Specialist that can stand you,’ Allers.”

“Same thing! That’s why you’re my favorite!” The reporter leaned in close to touch Sam’s elbow. “Come on, Traynor. I won’t bite. …Hard.” Diana’s voice was husky with promise.

Sam jerked her elbow away. “Lies don’t become you, Allers. I’ve seen your segments grilling the Commander about her calls. If that’s how you treat the lady responsible for covering our arses, God knows how you’ll treat me—us.”

The thought of Diana digging into Steve’s past in particular made Sam’s jaw clench. That man has been through enough, losing his husband to the Collectors.

Maybe I should go just to protect that sweetheart from the mean ol’ reporter.

Sidling between Samantha and her console, Diana clasped her hands pleadingly. “I promise I’ll behave. This isn’t gonna be some exposé on your sordid—or otherwise—personal lives.” Allers winked.

Sam narrowed her eyes at the woman. “Or Shepard’s?”

“Or Shepard’s,” Allers confirmed. “And that is saying something about my journalistic integrity, because I am dying for details on yours and Jane’s… ‘extracurriculars.’” Her fingers curled in air-quotes.

Cheeks reddening, Sam cleared her throat awkwardly.

Walked into that one, Traynor.

“Look, my editor challenged me to shine a light on the Normandy crew for my next Battlespace piece. Humanize you all a little, so the rest of the Alliance doesn’t feel like their contributions don’t matter unless they’re Commander fucking Shepard, super SpecTRe.” It was Allers’ turn to cross her arms, a thoughtful smile on her lips. “Please, Sam. We need all the morale we can spare. The war isn’t going well.”

Sam chewed her cheek, still skeptical. But she could feel her resolve weakening.

Damn that reporter and her occasional glimmer of human decency.

Diana continued, “What would you say to dinner and drinks at Purgatory, then? On the ANN’s dime? I’ve got a hefty per diem burning a hole in my pocket.” She fished a credit chit out of her dress jacket pocket to wave seductively at Sam.

“Resorting to bribery? That’s low, Allers.”

“’Bribery’ is such a dirty word, Traynor. The ANN prefers ‘compensation for credible sources.’ Quid pro quo. You scratch my back, I fill yours with booze and bar food.” The reporter paused. “…come on. Copeland agreed. Copeland. And he still hasn’t forgiven me for that Terra Nova piece. You gotta come.”

Samantha let the awkward silence build for a few seconds before an acquiescing sigh.

Making a victorious fist-pump motion, Allers immediately fired up her Omni-tool. “Yes! Meet me at the bar at 1930. I should be done with Cortez by then. I’m trying to stagger the one-on-ones, then have a group interview around 2100.”

Sam immediately regretted her decision as she felt a ping to her wrist. A navpoint paired with a calendar reminder popped up on the holo-screen. “Wait! I didn’t actually say I’d—!”

But Allers had already breezed past in large strides toward the bow docking hatch. Her camera drone floated behind her dutifully. “Thanks again, Traynor! You’re a doll! And try to dress up a little. Who knows, if you play your cards right you might end up with a fan following! An embassy secretary got her own reality show after a piece I did on her. Married a famous bioti-ball pitcher. …Trashiest social network feed I’ve ever seen, and I’m networked to that Westerlund clown, Al-Jilani. …See you tonight, Sam!”

“Fan following?” Sam thought as she watched the woman disappear around the corner out to the Citadel Docking Bay. The thought of becoming Famous did elicit a giddy feeling in Sam’s chest.

…Whoa there, Traynor. If you want to be famous right now, just tell everyone you’re dating Commander Jane Shepard. All you have to do is sell out the love of your life to the news media for a few credits and endorsements. In the middle of a galaxy-wide war.

She scowled at herself for that shitty, childish thought.

Never in a million years.

Then you’ll have to settle for giving Allers a couple feel-good soundbytes about how essential data analytics are to the war effort.

Her nose wrinkled a little less. That’s right. If not for comms specialists like me, we never would have saved Grissom Academy or tracked Kai Leng to Horizon.

That’ll have them lining up at the recruitment centres for sure, Traynor.

Finishing up a real-time data lag assessment for the Normandy’s next set of missions, Sam leaned backward in a luxurious stretch. She felt a few satisfying pops in her lower spine.

She fired up her Omni-tool to check the time. 15:48:55 GST. Just enough time to hit the showers and smooth out the wrinkles in her dress blues.

The Purgatory club was calmer than usual. The bar on the left side was always open (of course), but absent was the usual revolving clientele of dancing civilians and rowdy servicemen/women. Thrumming house music in the speakers was at a surprisingly bearable decibel for a change, too.

Skimming the upper balconies, Samantha spotted the reason for the change. Aria T’Loak, the ruler of Omega, was deep in conversation with a semicircle of trusted underlings. A holo schematic of Omega was visible between the shoulders of stern human, batarian and krogan mercenaries. It looked like the asari was finalizing her preparations to remove the Cerberus forces occupying the chunk of rock she called home.

A familiar, scowling bodyguard was posted at the upper stairwell, his four black eyes shifting from the reporter at the bar over to Sam herself. Adjusting her dress jacket, Sam flashed an innocent smile as she cut a wide berth away from the batarian towards the bar.

The sound of laughter grew louder as Sam approached a seated Steve Cortez and a standing Diana Allers at the bar. Floating behind Diana, her camera drone focused on Steve who was finishing off a frosty beer.

“—pard is still one of the worst Mako pilots I’ve ever seen. And Vega has crashed a Kodiak into Mars. That’s how low that bar is, and Shepard is still worse,” he chuckled while Diana wiped away a mirthful tear.

Allers tapped at her Omni-tool, still giggling. “Oh thank God I recorded all of that. I need to find the perfect segment to showcase ‘Commander Jane Shepard: Humanity’s Best Hope While Also Humanity’s Worst Pilot.’ My ratings will be legendary.“

Cortez raised his glass at Sam as she tiptoed up behind the reporter to take a look at her Omni-tool, currently playing back the end of Copeland’s interview and the beginning of Steve’s. Even the grumpy Ensign seemed relaxed, though Samantha suspected the shot glass in his hand was credited for that feat.

Samantha hissed in Diana’s ear as she flicked the woman’s shoulder. “Ohhhh, I see your game, Allers. Get everyone good and legless on plonk, and then film the results. Bloody despicable you are.”

Mumbling under her breath something about “Jesus Christ you’re so British,” Diana shot a glare over her shoulder at the Comms Specialist. “It’s just to grease the wheels a little, Traynor. Plus, it’s a magical learning experience. Gabby prefers wine, Copeland just throws back shots, and Cortez here is a pilsner man. I’m dying to know what your poison of choice is. I’m guessing… cheap vodka.”

Sam gasped with mock offense. “You slander my honor, madam.”

“Only one way to find out.” The reporter extended a fist and knocked on the counter to flag down the turian bartender, who nodded familiarly at Diana.

He grinned at Sam, rumbling, “Another one? Tab’s still open, Allers. You’re putting my kids through college.”

Still fiddling with her holo-recording, Diana barely looked up. She just stuck a thumb behind her at Sam. “Get this one whatever she wants. And make it a double.”

Samantha tapped her chin, an index of cocktails running through her mind from her Fishbone Pub days back at Oxford. She snapped her fingers when she recalled a favorite (and expensive) concoction: “One Quad Kicker please! All top shelf, hold the curry powder. I’m allergic. I don’t think my ‘date’ would fancy me asphyxiating to death in the middle of our chat.”

“It would be tough to explain to my boss, yes,” Allers agreed as she held her credit chit up to the bartender for another scan. “My ratings would probably go through the roof… until Shepard tossed me out an airlock.”

The turian nodded in confirmation and busied himself with smoothly mixing the requisite ginger ale, bourbon and spiced rum in a chilled highball glass. The drink was slid over to Samantha with a picture-perfect wedge of lime on the side.

Hmph. Show-off.

It was bubbly and sweet and strong, just like Sam remembered as she slid along the counter up to Cortez.

“Good to see you, Traynor,” Steve said warmly as he clinked his beer against Sam’s drink in silent toast. “And not just because I had a bet going with Copeland if you’d show tonight. …I won.”

Those bloody tossers, Samantha scowled before shrugging it off with another sip to her drink.

“…You’re in a good mood, Cortez,” Sam acknowledged with a squeeze to his shoulder.

“I’m good, Sam.”

She squinted skeptically at the pilot.

Cortez just smiled back, thin black scruff framing white teeth. His eyes had a crinkle to them that she hadn’t seen before. “Really. I’m good. I mean it, for once. I’ve been talking it out—with Shepard, of all people—and I said my goodbyes. I finally actually believe that I’ll be okay someday. Okay to move on. It seems possible.”

“I’m glad. I was rather worried about you. …Especially with this vulture stirring up trouble,” Sam said a little louder.

Allers’s eyes never left her Omni-tool, but she did extend her right hand off to the side to shoot Sam a middle finger. “I heard that.”

Cortez drained the last swallow of beer from his glass and stood up to offer Sam his seat. He threw a thumb in Allers’ direction. “She’s all right, too. …Fashion taste is terrible, but her heart is in the right place.” He winked at Sam when Diana squawked an indignant “Hey! Not you too!”

“Any advice?”

“Just dive in and get it over with,” Steve said sagely as he patted Sam’s arm. “Like ripping off a band-aid.”

Diana warned behind them, “Careful with all the shit-talk, Normandiers. I know where you bunk.”
