H50 Secret Santa

This is my Secret Santa gift to @cowandcalf

A little bird told me what you wanted as a gift: “love love love ;) & art with the two in love or great lyric. I love SEAL Steve”.

Steve was called to the reserves. Two weeks ago. He has been away (who knows where), doing exercises (he already has a six-pack but anyway…) and probably going on super dangerous secret missions without backup (better not to think about it). He hasn’t been able to call a lot (it sounds like a lousy excuse. Everybody knows the ARMY has an excellent and reliable communications network, thank you very much).

Danny has been in command of the H50, working hard with Chin and Kono to successfully solve 237 cases in 15 days (OMG! Hawaii is too much!). All has been completed in a competent and tasteful manner, professionally executed. No big explosions (just one or two; medium size), no bazookas (no, that thing wasn’t a bazooka; it was a portable flamethrower), no grenades (ok, Steve left another one in the Camaro’s driver side door pocket but that doesn’t count). All the paperwork is done and sent. On time! Danny is amazing and also very very tired right now. Exhausted. After a long 360-hours shift he just can drive himself home, go upstairs and take his clothes off (with the exception of his pineapple infested boxers, Grace’s gift for father’s day. Of course he loves the boxers very much. They are wonderful, perfect). Danny falls asleep in his bed (their bed) exactly in two and a half seconds.

Danny swears he will never wake up. But maybe he will because a certain navy seal in the reserves suddenly decides to come back home, his home (their home) in the middle of the night. He goes upstairs and takes his clothes off (with the exception of his camo boxers, Grace’s gift for father’s day. Of course he loves the boxers very much. They are wonderful, perfect). Steve gets into his bed (their bed) quietly.

I hope you like the gift! I mean the drawing; my writing skills are poor, I know. But I just wanted to tell a little story.

I didn't even write one of these in 2023 or 2024, which tells you exactly how much writing I've been doing! Thanks to @kwills91 for tagging me in this fic roundup.

Solo Writing

Most of my solo writing has halted, including the many Donutverse WIPs. It's always possible I'll pick them back up again, but for now, I've set them aside.

Comments: I wrote this for the 2023 H50 Big Bang, and it got the hottest art! I absolutely love McDanno, but this series was my opportunity to explore crime drama in the context of the Donutverse soulmates/worldwide conspiracy setting, and it had to be polyam for it to work for the larger story. I have seven more stories planned in this series.

3. Laid Up

masturbation, fluff and smut, AU-Canon Divergence

Fandom: Glee Ship: Puckurt Rating: Explicit Summary: After Puck breaks his leg, the Hudson-Hummel family agree to care for him while he recovers. Kurt quickly realizes he’s in for a lot more than he bargained for.

Cowriting

Even though work and my life have been busy, writing with my cowriter @beshrew-my-very-heart has continued. I'm so grateful for his patience with all the changes and stressful event of the last two years.

My cowriter introduced me to a new fandom this year, 9-1-1. We wrote a handful of smutty stories for the Five Alarm Fest this summer, and several of them have prompted series, in particular the Time Off crossover series. It's been so much fun to get to know all the characters by writing about them.

Here are the fics we've published together in 2023 and 2024:

1. Auld Acquaintance

Fandom: Glee Ship: Puck/everyone (but secretly kinky Puckurt) Rating: Mature Summary: On New Year’s Eve, Noah Puckerman is embroiled in a little game. From the moment the ball drops, he is on a quest: to collect kisses from as many of the New Direction alumni before time runs out.

Comments: This is my favorite story-that-nobody-read, probably because we didn't tag the secret relationship. We challenged ourselves to write a oneshot. It was plotted, written, and published in 24 hours—but we couldn't stop there! We wrote several thousand words of a sequel, but set it aside in favor of writing other things.

2. Waited on a Line of Greens and Blues (part 3 of To Be With You series)

AU-Canon Divergence, football, teen drama, romance

Fandom: Glee Ship: Sam/Finn, Puckurt, Finn/Kurt friendship, Puck/Finn frenemies Rating: Explicit Summary: Sam and Finn’s second summer at football camp is complicated by Puck’s involvement, Kurt’s presence at the cheerleading camp across the lake, the new direction of the camp’s management, and Sean’s painful absence. The most challenging thing about being together again, however, is their own confusing feelings for one another.

Comments: We wrote this a while back (and also wrote a good bunch of the next one), and I'm still so proud of it. We commissioned some amazing art for it from @starpawedart that we adore.

Comments: We love this ship (and it felt so obvious that this was the way the story would have gone if the writers had decided to go with EddieTommy instead of BuckTommy). There's a sequel in the works.

Luckily, they’ve found the perfect person to keep Buck company, teach him some new things about himself, and run him through his paces. Twenty-four hours doesn’t sound like a long time, but it’s plenty of opportunity to break some rules, confess some secrets, and perhaps have a few surprise visitors.

I'm not often on Tumblr anymore scrolling and discovering interesting things and I miss the interaction with other fandom folks. And here you are, posting a great fic rec list of the most epic OTP ever: Steve and Danny.

I have my McDanno 'go-to' fics I love dearly but for this list I put together a different number of McDanno stories from my bookmarks. I hope some of you haven't read them already. Maybe there's a chance you find an unknown great McDanno story. All of my recommanded stories always act like a large safety net of love I let myself fall into when I need those special, unique, and most magic McDanno vibes.

Three-Ten Challenge part 2

For the second part of the Three-Ten Challenge, I'm sharing my favorite episode in each season of Hawaii Five-0. Not my ten favorite episodes! The best episode of each season according to me.

(I actually love the whole show! The quality of the plot steadily goes down, but the late-seasons characters are so good that it's honestly difficult for me to choose a favorite era.)

Without further ado...

1x15 - Kai e'e

The first and last episodes of the season were strong contenders, but this one is my favorite. There's so much happening and it's so exciting! The tsunami warning, everybody scrambling to get safe, the whole mess with the asset forfeiture locker (the three most doomed words in H50) being stirred up... And the character interactions are great too: between Steve and Danny, of course, but I also like Kamekona being entrusted with Grace's care, and the little banter between Cath and Steve at the beginning. If you wanted to make someone want to watch H50, you could show them this episode.

2x23 - Ua Hala

This was a tie between the season premiere and the season finale. 2x23 wins it because of the number of things the episode touches on. We've got the investigation into Fryer's death (I absolutely love Fryer, btw), HPD blowing up, the Shelburne reveal, Danny's problems with Rachel beginning again over Grace's custody, info peppered in that Kono is still with Adam, Max getting shot, Steve and Danny taking the time to have a conversation, and the terrible dilemma Frank Delano forces on Chin at the end. All that in 45 minutes. The number of sets, actors, storylines, makeups, effects, actions scenes, is astonishing even for H50. It's the kind of episode where you can't take your eyes off the screen, and that quality and involvment tend to diminish as the show goes on. But the finale of season 2 rocks.

3x13 - Olelo HoʻOpaʻI Make

Season 3 is so good it was difficult to chose a favorite episode. This one wins by a tiny margin. I love the prison setting, it's a Chin-centric episode (and Daniel Dae Kim is perfect as usual), it has Sang Min (my favorite minor character), Kaleo is here (which strengthens the lore of the show, like, he didn't disappear, he's very much in Halawa), it's riveting! The character moments are the best parts: I love Chin fighting for his life, the writers have so much fun knocking him around. And Sang Min's redemption arc is in full swing, and it's very well written (I'm actually surprised the H50 writers didn't fumble that one).

4x22 - O ka Pili'Ohana ka 'Oi

It was so difficult to choose between this and 4x19 (the collapsed building episode)! But I chose this one because of Grover. Lou is one of my favorite characters, Chi McBride is one of the three best actors on this show in my opinion, and he shines throughout season 4. This is an amazing team episode, the interactions between the characters are great, Wo Fat has escaped prison for the last time... I love it. There was also the Chin-centric episode this season, but ah! Lou Grover!

5x04 - Ka No'eau

Season 5 may be my favorite season of H50, so it was very difficult to choose between 5x04, 5x19 and 5x20. A Danny episode, a Steve episode and a Lou episode. The first has great acting and is a turning point for Danny, the second is funny with a surprisingly dark twist, and the third is the start of an excellent storyline for Lou. And that's without even mentioning 5x07! In the end, I choose 5x04. It has Lee Tergesen, an actor I loved in Oz. The case of the week is good, the action is good, and there's still a lot of time dedicated to Danny. The team bands together to help him save his brother, and it's for nothing (a trope I love). Steve follows him into hell and doesn't stop him when he murders his brother's killer, no matter the consequences. It's a watershed moment and a fantastic episode of television.

6x25 - O Ke Ali'i Wale No Ka' U Make Make

I actually had trouble ranking season 6, I find it lukewarm overall. There is a handful of really good episodes, and of course this one ends up on top. I'm a McDanno person and this is a huge turn in their relationship. It's one of the fandom's favorite episodes, so I don't need to go into details about everything great in it. I'll just say that I love BAMF!Danny, and we get a good serving of it this episode.

7x18 - E Malama Pono

This season has some great episodes for McDanno, for the McGarrett-Williams family, and for Danny. 7x18 is the ultimate McDanno episode this season, with Steve's love confession, their discussion about their relationship being like a marriage, Danny's desire to retire, and the start of their restaurant project (a storyline I grew tired of later, but not yet). It's also a door-opener fanfiction-wise: we know for almost certain that Steve will get cancer later in his life because of the events of this episode, and some beautiful fics have been/can be written about that.

8x10 - I Ka Wa Ma Mua, I Ka Wa Ma Hope

Yay, we're entering the later Five-0 era! Tani and Junior are here!

This is one of the most beautiful episodes in the whole show. It's like the writers sat down and wrote a fanfic. I love that Danny's dream of a happy life is with the ohana and with Steve. The writers kept pairing Steve and Danny with girlfriends to maintain the heterosexual appearances, but they were honest with us this episode: Steve and Danny's idea of a happy life is with each other. We even know that they live together in this dream future, since Danny's imaginary granddaughter calls Steve's house to talk to him. I love seeing the team pour sweat and blood to save Danny's life. I like the setting, with the team being trapped. It's a great episode even for non-shippers.

9x03 - Mimiki ke kai, ahuwale ka papa leho

The heat wave! I love season 9, and this is a great episode! Very entertaining, with cool and funny character interactions. I love Tani and Junior together, they're the second-best duo of the whole show. And if Steve and Danny are together, I'm happy. You can really feel the heat, and the episode has one of the most gruesome deaths of the series, with a woman baking inside a broken-down elevator. The ending with the rain is truly a relief.

10x14 - I ho'olulu, ho'ohulei 'ia e ka makani

This episode, man.

Let's get an unpopular opinion out of the way: I don't like Eddie. It's just a dog, and I think too much time is dedicated to Eddie in the last seasons that could have been given to interesting characters and plots. So half of this episode is the team trying to cure a dog I don't care about, and it's boring.

The other half?

Scott Caan is pulling his guts out in this one acting-wise and it's stunning. Scott is, in my opinion, the best actor on the show, and this episode might be his best performance (2x15 is awesome too). I'm glad he had this story in which to shine for the last season. I was almost crying, which never happens. This was heart-wrenching, even more so since the guy responsible for the accident is never found after.

What an episode.

Happy Birthday Danno!

Danny's office walls are decorated with pictures of the people he loves the most (he doesn’t know about Charlie yet so no pictures of him).

The beautiful frames were a lovely birthday gift from Grace last year. Her gifts are absolutely perfect. He proudly chose and hung the pictures up on his office walls to comfort and cheer him up when work is just too much.

He also got another elegant frame from Grace but this one is proudly displayed on his bedroom (the same bedroom he shares with a certain person he loves -and loves him back).

Danny really gets the best birthday presents.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Most of the time. There have been sporadic tines when I haven't but I try to be consistent. It can be a little harder to respond to comments on older fic, but I read and appreciate every one .

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hmm. All my fc have happy endings. I feel like that's the big payoff. There are a few that end on happy notes after a ton of angst.

The Hoku was a very dark post apocalyptic fic. H50/McDanno

bro·ken Buddie/ 9-1-1 ends on healing, happy note, but it was a pretty big angst fest.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I have no idea :-P

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I used to get some pretty serious unwarranted critique in other fandoms, but not the current one.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do. Not a ton, but if the story calls for it, I follow the Muse.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

The Killing Game

A Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones crossover with The Predator.

A few times.

Russian and Chinese.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

In the SGA fandom I had a wonderful co-writer everybetty on some pretty huge epics.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

I really do love Buddie. Followed by McDanno.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I don’t have any WIPs except the current one. I have an idea that I have outlined and have talked about in the past. My epic Sci-Fi of doom. But the Mafia AU which took me a long time to write and I don't have the motivation to write anything that will take me months again.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Immersing the reader in the scene. Writing detail in a concise matter. Research. Action scenes. Gritter topics that don’t get glossed over.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I have a mild form of dyslexia which means I write weird sentence structure and a ton of homophones that my amazing beta fixes :)

It also takes me a long time to write, but I'm also in my 40's and I'm don't have a lot of writing time. Which is also the reason it takes me a while to read longer stories.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Very, very sparingly and if only, it makes an impact in the scene.
