I wouldn't have nearly as much beef with 4Kids/4K Media dubs of Yugioh if they didn't prioritise jokes over staying true to the spirit of the shows. Especially Zexal onwards. DM/GX/5Ds had their own issues, like the unfinished dubs and hacking the themes and characters in GX S3, but the way Zexal/Arc V/VRAINS become quip shows really bothers me.

Characters are watered down and lose their nuance, themes are simplified for a younger audience, and you get the feeling sometimes the localisation team aren't confident the shows can keep people's attention as they are if the characters aren't cracking jokes. The dubs aren't awful 100% of the time but they're just bad enough in a way that makes me mad.

It's not even like I wish the dubs didn't exist, for the sake of accesability they're a priceless resource and a lot of people wouldn't have given Yugioh a shot without it. I just wish they were different. I want people who don't want to or for any reason can't watch Yugioh subtitled to be able to enjoy the same stories I love so much.

Oh yeah when I say that I'm talking about Pearson 100%

It has been a little while but from what I remember, up through the Dark Signer arc they do a pretty decent job of leaving a lot of the deaths as heavily implied as possible so that you can still understand and put together that that's what's happening if you're actually paying attention. Like for example, they edit Carly falling into like the shadow realm mist and all,

but they still pretty strongly imply through her conversation with Misty after that whole situation that she died and even that Misty has died as well. They say it without specifically saying it, kinda thing.

And obviously they can't show Greiger being hanged on a saturday morning show the kids watch in America, but they literally show everything except the Spider shooting the web and it wrapping around his neck. Like you see him fall, you see the spider on the ceiling, and you see the little figure of him like bob up and down in the wide shot, like they show almost everything there. And them saying that Misty's brother "went missing" instead of that he died is nothing new, clearly because they did it with Aster's dad and even backpeddled on actually saying Seto and Mokuba's parents died in season 1 to saying they disappeared in season 3.

But the thing with Pearson that makes it the most egregious death censor to me is just how bad the quality of the censoring attempt is. Literally all they did was recolor the garage fire purple and have them claim that he "disappeared in a purple glow" like what the fuck is that? Like y'all ain't fooling anybody for a second with that. 🤦‍♀️

Like it's horrendously bad.

Also shoutout to when the dad falls into the like abyss and dies in the minecart section in Crash Town and when Jack and Crow show up with the authorities at the end they just throw in Jack being like "oh btw kids, they found your dad, he's gonna be a-okay! 😀👍" like no he ain't he died 😭

This episode of GX is about the teen son of a warlord who brings guerilla warfare tactics into use while playing children's card games.

Putting tracking devices on school kids is about as above-board as the rest of the plot devices in this show.

Crowler and Bonapart suddenly look like the most responsible adults. (Don't think about that too hard.)

Here we see even Jesse struggling to witness Jaden's half a brain cell "at work" (maybe they can share?)

Once again Cyrus is the only one who can read the meta and see the GX world for the fucked up nightmare land it really is, being the most sane of them all while still namedropping Jaden and Zane like woah.

Chazz Princeton redefining the term "sass." "Know what's wrong [Cyrus]? YOU IN THAT COAT." Burn.

Every time I watch this show Jaden's dialogue gets more ridiculous. I still can't believe this isn't an Abridged.

ive made a somewhat rambly thing over here

some warnings for yugioh: torture of the physical and psychological kind, gore, child abuse, uhhh some other heavy stuff, we love childrens card games!!

mostly, you can read the manga, we like the manga we love the manga its the og nothing compares to it but also you have to read. even if you dont wanna read the whole thing i do recommend reading teh first 8 chapters bc theyre NOTHING like what u expect yugoh to be, theres no cardgames just straight up, saw trap fun, also kazuki takahashis early art is very charming. you can find it places.

if you want to watch anime theres the tooei anime which we lovingly call season 0, the adaptation for early yugioh, kaiba has his hair green here and yugi looks even smaller, it also focuses on smaller characters and gives us that sweet classmates having fun in a horror way (i swear its fun) im p sure its on youtube

if you want to watch duel monsters you have to decide if you want to watch the 4kids dub or watch it subbed, i hear the dub added fun songs and character montages and also its 4kids, you know, ill leave it up to u, u dont even have to understand how the card game works bc theyre making it up as they go so its p sweet. theres movies also but most people only care about dark side of dimensions which is set post canon, (havent watched it yet for *reasons* but the movie looks gorgeous)

In the case u dont wanna start with duel monsters you could do gx or 5ds, gx is very fun and silly up until season 4 then its like, sad, and tragic, duels are very fun and cool tho, or you could do 5ds, more serious and the focus is the plot yeahhh but also the duels are even more serious (i say serious but, come on, its yugioh) theres also a crossover movie with dm gx and 5ds, called bonds beyond time yayy!!

you could also watch the abridged series by little kuriboh, if only bc they do have songs there and i miss that old school editing , also he once retweeted from me so i feel like i have to promove the series.

IF YOU WANTT to ever get into the card game you could play duel links, u can play card games in ur phone as the characters isnt that sweet, i had fun with it back in the day and i heard the events they have nowadays drop all kinds of lore, fun times and easier to get into than say, master duel.

Something that really bothers me is people being mostly sub watchers and then seeing a dub episode and complaining that the characters are "totally butchered". That's because there's a whole show of building that character in a slightly different flavor, y'all.
