I do not like comparing things and/or needlessly taking jabs at something but holy shit the simultaneous feelings of me being almost done with gravity circuit and watching my friend in a call beat iX2 compelled me to make this. (Also I’m not posting this on my Twitter because I’d get more killed there)

Coming to terms with Gunvolt 3
I promise this won’t be a rant
Spoiler warning for mostly gv3.
I don’t think this post will be perfectly worded but I hope that the main message is clear.
It’s been over a year now since gv3 came out and I think I’m not as mad about it compared to back then. Maybe it’s because of time, or replaying the story for a second time softened my opinion on it but I think it’s time to at least give the game another chance.
Despite the problems the story has, the story has good ideas and the game overall is fun and exciting:
Gv in sumeragi is fine as an idea especially it gives us another perspective
the time skip is fine
the atems and dragon saviors are really interesting and an amazing step forward in terms of support staff
Djinn resurrection is really interesting especially seeing how each of the atems respond to it and giving the enemy adepts a boost is really cool
the idea of the azure striker septima going out of control because of the AB spirits is really interesting especially since the plot deals with Gunvolt’s guilt.
And on top of all of that, the gameplay is really fun. Bouncing all over the place as Kirin is fun, the greed snatcher image pulse is the funniest middle finger to every boss in the game, and trying to compete a stage without changing back to Kirin is fun.
But it feels like the game could have done more with these ideas
Moebius isn’t a character and will probably never be seen again
I wish Gunvolt had actually taken over sumeragi instead of going off to parts unknown
I wish the time skip wasn’t so big
The story feels like an epilogue before the act 3
I wish the story didn’t make Gv god-like and instead just went berserk
I wish the story had a small discussion about sumeragi and Dr.Kamizono and Gv’s real name (if he even has one )
But Gunvolt 3 didn’t live up to my expectations . And that’s fine. I can look past all of the faults because the game is fun, the cast is fun and the bosses are some of the best in the series. It’s not perfect, no I think it’s worse than 2 and 1 plot wise. But gameplay wise I think it’s one of the best. Maybe the drama tracks can help but idk.
Gunvolt 3 isn’t perfect. And I think I can live with that. Thank you for getting this far if you did.

Somehow I ended up drawing more Gunvolt fan art after starting to sketch Joule the other night.
...man.
If I had more time and could convince myself to do it again, I have another Gunvolt fan comic idea, set after the events of GV3, and the more I keep coming back to it the cooler the concept sounds. :T
Anyhoooow, this one's on twitterrrrrrrr

Archive Updated!
Tumblr media
I completely forgot to share the Gunvolt series review from my initial streams of GV3. Here it is!
I'm not someone who normally reviews or rates games, but I felt that with the end of the GV3 streams I should put out my feelings completely for the full series as well as each game in particular. The Gunvolt franchise is a very impressive 9.5/10. I will always recommend it to people, but it's not something I feel needs to be required play for everyone.
On that note, with franchises, a perfect 10 is "Everyone should be required to play at least one game in this during their entire life", but with games a perfect 10 is more on the scale of how likely I am to immediately suggest someone try it out as well as how much fun I had with the game. I should have made that clear in the video and I apologize for not doing so.
Gunvolt Series Review is now live on the archive channel.

#22 - Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (Replay)
Tumblr media
...I started this replay before GV3 came out...
There's really not much I can say about this game that I haven't said a million times already. Peak Fiction, Greatest Platformer Ever Made, yada yada yada.
What really amazes me about this game is how Gunvolt is just as fun and complex as he was in GV1 (way more so, actually) from a scoring perspective, yet Acura's wildly different playstyle is just as engaging and polished, and somehow both of them work perfectly in each other's stages (mostly, sewers as acura can go to hell).
There will never be another game as magical as this ever again, and that fact hurts more and more every single time I experience this game's ending.

*sigh* i guess gunvolt is going to become one of those series i have to muse into the void about so. gomensauce, these ideas must leave me so i may sleep
Tumblr media
honestly, despite the dragon saviors obviously being one note tropes in gv3, its really not hard to see how a kirin series that takes them more seriously could flesh them out? like, obviously thats *if* they choose to take them seriously and not can them... but like, its right there! lexas/apollo is obviously a former trained assassin. like. hes obviously a trained assassin. who??? who trained him? did he get away free? what the hell is the transition from assassin to human resources monster all about? cayman comes from some huge wealthy family probably which is silly in gv3 but??? who??? what kind of family? in the way kirin's life story is a blank slate now, the relevance of these organizations and families and how they relate to a kirin series' plot are totally in the writer's hands
(i dunno if inti creates listens to fan feedback but if they do... they gotta be starting gv4 and the kirin series with story in mind lol)
thats not even my full point though! id argue BB and shion actually do approach interesting territory. like, is shion 11 or is he just really small? he reminds me of a trans masc friend lol exploring him either as a young prodigy or tiny man is guaranteed endearing. further still, what the fuck is up with bb??? black badge who?? haha thats bb! hes just so silly! so smooth with the ladies *radio static* yeah bb has strong associations with death and talks about going on a killing spree as a bouryuu *radio static* hehe silly party death boy! whatever will we do with him ;9
like personally i dont even think these characters are boring (well.. because cayman is funny and well designed) and as soon as you stop treating them as a trope harem thing and let them grow as beautiful goldfish in a big big kirin series pond and/or your mind on sugar they get pretty interesting right away

late night thoughts about gv2, since i haven't played any other game in the series beyond gv1 or gv3 in months, at minimum, and i apparently haven't started a save in gv2 on the switch? (or maybe the physical and digital copies having different data borked up the switch and now i have six save slots for both striker pack games >:) )
i hated the localization way more than i thought i would. i knew it wasn't going to be good going in, but actually playing the game and seeing the lines of dialogue for the first time in forever just felt wrong. 8-4's flavor of localization (at least for the gunvolt games, idk about the other stuff they've translated) did not sit right with me this time around, especially when it had to be stretched out to cover the midstage dialogue, plus the actual voice lines tend to go for way longer than the dialogue itself (which i don't think was 8-4's fault for the most part, but it still bugged me). although i didn't play a lot of the game, there were way too many moments where i went "wait, (character) wouldn't say/talk like that," and usually it was because they spoke way too casually than what i would've expected them to. i wouldn't say it was a dealbreaker, considering i can put up with gv3's story, but since it is a dialogue-heavy game i figured i should bring it up, especially since it was my biggest gripe this time around
gameplay's still fun, but i found myself having way more fun as copen than gunvolt. again. i should probably actually get good as gunvolt instead of just running through everything, even though i can and i'm good enough at EP management that it usually doesn't bite me in the ass lmao
i find it really funny that, as the series progressed, it got better and better at explaining its mechanics, despite the story requiring at least some knowledge of the previous game(s) to have a full grasp of what's going on. like, in the case of gv2, why lumen's hanging around gunvolt all of the time and being referred to as joule. i mean, i GUESS you could figure things out from the brief spoiler flashes when gunvolt runs into mytyl??
speaking of mytyl, i'm still sad about how joule was written in this. she feels more like an annoying sidekick than, well, joule, who sure as hell wasn't annoying. it also sucks that the secret ending stuff didn't lead anywhere, but tbh it's not like i've ever gotten it in the first place :/
(sorry if any of this is incoherent, it's currently 5 am and i haven't slept 🙃)

Gunvolt’s treatment in cannon bothers me to an unreal degree aka I’m get to rant about this series because I’ve never seen a series treat it’s mc worse
Spoilers for literally the whole franchise
I’ve had some time to think about it and calm down since gv3’s story and come to terms with it and something never sat right with me. And then it hit me. Gunvolt is the most punished character in the series and there is no good justification for it.
Drama tracks pre asg1
The things we learn about gv in the drama tracks are depressing. For reference, I recommend you watch the translations provided on slider’s YouTube channel, since they’ll be my main source for this section.
From what we can tell in the tracks that gv’s childhood pre quill is for lack of better words, absolutely crap. He was one of the subjects of the gv project, and only two that were successful, the other being Asimov. As far as we know he never had a name or at least was never referred to as such only being called subject 78.
As far as we know (because gv cannon likes raising more questions than answers and you have to DIG to hell and back just to find some answers) Gv’s time in sumeragi was miserable until quill decided to make a surprise adoption.
Asg1: and now things get worse
Then asg1 happens and we meet Joule, the other most punished character . Things go well for the pair until the end of the game. There are two ending, the Asimov kills gv and we move to the ix timeline and the gv lives but now Joule lives in his head ending.
The ending where he lives end in the simplest of terms is Gv killing what his basically his father and basically has to leave his friends behind with out a word and now has Joule living in his head. There’s not much of a happy ending here, bittersweet at most but hey at least he gets to live.
Asg2: everyone say hello to Quinn and Xiao
In one of the drama tracks where Gv meets Quinn, Gv and Joule are not having the best time. Joule’s not having a great time considering that y’know she’s basically a ghost and gunvolt himself isn’t having it any better. Now is how he treats Joule here great?
No
However, keep in mind that he’s only a year older than she is and feels like he failed her and has to deal with quill and sumeragi being after him. Not to mention he killed his foster father in an act of revenge. So yeah everything kinda sucks.
Then Quinn happens and she fills the role the of the anchor to Gv’s mental state in a sense in that in order for him to get better he has to come to terms with what happens and let Joule go.
And that partially happens through Michiru (I can’t spell her eng name for some reason) since no matter who you play, Gv ultimately makes the choice to let her go. And it’s for the better because an argument can be made that Joule staying around in her current state isn’t healthy in the slightest. Not helping that before the prayer fight, he internalizes what happened as failure, that there was a failure on his part. Even though, he really didn’t have much control over Joule’s powers getting snatched and Copen wasn’t really helping matters much either.
By contrast Gv never seems to talk about what happened in the previous game, never even referring to Asimov by name only calling him “mentor”. Not helped by him having nightmares about his near-death experience and as far as we know is more content with just leaving it in the past. Which is fine but I wish it would have been brought up at some point.
Honestly, it feels kinda weird that we never get any sort of interaction with Joule that has him or Joule take a moment to talk about what happened. Neither of them talk about their experiences with sumeragi, or the whole Asimov situation. It also doesn’t seem like he ever got closer in that case and I don’t feel like he ever did.
Asg3: the reason this post exists
Now we get to asg3 which is the reason why I made this post, because it’s kinda frustrating in every way.
First we learn that gunvolt’s powers went out of control. One of the conversations have him point out that it could be due to the AB spirits. However due to this he ended up hurting Quinn, afterwards he turned himself in to sumeragi.
Now gv3 does make it a point to say that sumeragi isn’t that bad which is a problem due to all of the child experimentation. Gunvolt himself also makes it a point to bring up that the scientists don’t represent the whole of sumeragi, which while fair kinda feels weird because those scientists were part of a whole project that probably had the company’s ok.
Now gunvolt has been a dragon for decades, which is the story’s justification for abandoning every other plot line
Now we get to a frustrating part in the story which is the duo refights. The problem isn’t that it can be interpreted that they’re a personified version of his guilt. The problem is that because their so late in the story that it feels like the neither the story or characters really press on it. Which sucks because Gv never seems to get closer with Quinn.
Skipping to the end because Asimov and Nova deserve their own posts. Gunvolt’s story ends with him being turned into a baby and going … somewhere.
Now why is this all an issue?
The core of the issue stems from the fact that most of these events happen nearly every time we see him. Every time he gains something he’s forced to lose it. The only times he wasn’t was when he let Joule go.
Copen in the IX timeline at least gets to be able to have some sort of stability and despite having to kill his twin sister at least gains something in the same respect. Compare this to gv where it’s gut punch, gain something, then it’s gone. Gunvolt becoming a villain wouldn’t have been better either.
His story is doesn’t feel fun to go through it feels unreasonably depressing. His story could’ve been better if you just let him be happy for longer than the start or the end of a game.

I have...so many swirling thoughts on Gunvolt and Inti Creates in general. My fixation on them kinda ended last year but the games still bubble in my mind. Particularly going from Gunvolt 1, 2 and then Luminous Avenger iX. And I'm still fucking blown away by the climaxes in all three games and how immaculately they built on top of each other.
And like you could already start to see the rough edges in design with LAiX 1, but its such a shame that the devs seem to be really struggling with the series rn...like it IS Inti Creates' big blockbuster main title series yet its so hard for them to innovate with the series. Designing core gameplay ground up seems to be a real challenge for them in general.
Will say though!!! I liked Luminous Avenger iX 2 well enough still, I really really hope the melee/air combat gets explored more bc its a cool as hell idea to alternate between the two. Still haven't played GV3 though :/

I'm not sure yet what I want to stream tomorrow.
I could go back to Brilliant Diamond, we could do more Repurpose, I could start the Gunvolt side of Gunvolt 2, or I could start the Gunvolt Chronicles series which I feel leans into and leads to more stuff for the main series even if it takes place in a separate canon from the actual series.
Starting the chronicles on stream would mean that I would get to show off my first impressions for some parts because I haven't finished it, same with Repurpose. Starting GV2 would mean that both GVC titles would be played back to back, since I want to do all of those before starting GV3.
Diamond would just be grinding because I need to make sure I have enough berries and I haven't been on the game in months, so none of the berry trees would have anything.
Repurpose would be fun, but I would like to get to see more of it from my personal run on the laptop first just so I know what paths to take.
