“I just don’t see what the big deal is!” You scoffed, an overwhelming feeling of pure aggravation swarming you as you stepped into the hotel room, the silk material of your cocktail dress swishing against your thighs. “I was doing my job.”

“That was not your job.” He sighed, pushing past you whilst he loosened the black tie from around his neck; trying to ease the tension between the two of you that was suffocating him in every sense of the word. “That was you acting like a dumbass.”

His suit jacket was thrown over the leather armchair, the sleeves of his pristine white shirt now bunched up at his elbows as he ran a hand over his face and shook his head in pure exhaustion. “Those guys could’ve killed you, y/n. You had no back up, and they completely outnumbered you— fuck, they outnumbered both of us.”

“They had eyes everywhere, I told you to wait for me.” His voice raised ever so slightly towards the end of his impromptu rant, fingers tugging at the dark, messy tresses resting upon his head. “You just don’t use your fucking head.”

“What?” You were completely bewildered, pretty features contorted into a look of pure confusion as your wide eyes burned holes into the side of his head. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

“I had to do something, Mitch. They were going to kill everyone at that fucking party!” You exclaimed, fury and frustration embedded into your words; a fire settling into your lungs. “We were sent here to take them down, and we took them down. I really don’t understand what your problem is.”

He watched you with dubious eyes as you paced around the room, the bridge of your nose pinched between two manicured fingers, oozing perplexion and annoyance. “You could’ve gotten yourself hurt; God knows what they would’ve done to you if they’d seen you even a second earlier than they did. You can’t do that shit ever again, do you hear me? Ever.”

You halted in your pacing, spinning around in your spot to face him; he took in your features, specifically the look of disbelief painting your face at his words. “Excuse me? You can’t just tell me what to do. You’re not my fucking superior, Rapp.”

Your voice wavered slightly as you yelled, eyes narrow and hands shaking as they knotted in your hair. “Our job is to take down criminals, that is exactly what we do on every case. If something went wrong tonight, and I did end up dying; I would’ve been doing my fucking job.”

He stood across from you, both of you residing at opposite ends of the room as you screamed at each other like feuding divorcees. “When are you going to stop treating yourself like collateral damage? If you died— if anything happened to you; it would be so much more than just another agent killed in the line of fucking duty.”

“And yes, I am telling you what to do.” He paused, fingers trailing over the fresh wound just above his eyebrow as he tried to craft his next words carefully. He looked over at you,standing opposite him in a beautiful dress; untreated gashes and bruises dotting your exposed skin, face crumpled in a kind of frustration that was so uncharacteristically you. Fuck it. “I’m telling you not to pull something like that again because—  ‘cause fucking hell, I care about you. Okay?”

Your fatigued eyes met his, the whiskey hued irises now tinged with a deeper colour; eyes rolling and body slumping when he realised what he’d said. He’d opened his mouth to say something, anything, only for you to hold a hand up to shush him. “You what?”

“I care about you.” A beat of silence followed, his words all clumped together in his throat. “You’re my partner, it’s not some big revelation or any—“

“Shut up.” You breathed, hand still held up in the air to halt his panicked words. “You can’t bullshit your way out of this one, Rapp. I thought you hated me.”

“What?” Now, it seemed to be his turn to be shocked, an unsettling feeling of surprise washing over him. “You think I hate you? God, no. Of course I don’t hate you. How could I hate you? You’re— well, you’re you! You’re. . . you’re perfect.”

The last words were huffed under his breath, meant for him only; but when your tired eyes softened, he’d knew you’d heard them. “God, I would love for the ground to swallow me up right now.”

Your previous feelings of stress and exasperation slowly began to dissipate, muscles relaxing as your mouth twitched into a playful smile. “You think I'm perfect?”

The words were almost a whisper, eyes shining and cheeks burning whilst you watched him scratch the back of his neck anxiously. “Not when you’re acting like an idiot.”

You slowly made your way over to him, your grin soft and your hands gentle as they clutched at his biceps. “You think I'm perfect.”

He let out a playful scoff, a timid smirk tugging at his mouth whilst he stared down at you. “You’re never gonna let me live this down, are you?”

His eyes were warm, glistening in a way you’d never gotten the privilege to see before. You shook your head, a tired chuckle falling from your lips as your hands slid up his biceps and over his shoulders, before they were meeting at the back of his neck. “For the record, I think you’re pretty perfect too.”

“You do?” He queried, head tilted down slightly to look at you, his fingers tilting your chin up so he could see you clearer.

“I do.” Your lips chased his eagerly, before you paused; letting him pull back with furrowed brows. “If I do this— if we do this. You have to let me do my job. That’s the only way this will work, if we trust each other; okay?”

He nodded quickly. “Got it. I’m sorry, by the way. I should’ve just let you do what you had to do without making you feel bad about it. I was a jerk.”

“You’re not so bad.” You breathed, rosy lips ghosting his just barely. “Now, shut up and kiss me already, Rapp.”
