Fates Entwined - IV: Common Ground

After your former clan was brutally murdered, you agree to an arranged marriage with Ivar to keep your social status. You may not always see eye to eye and sometimes even find yourself on different sides of one war or the other, but somehow you can never escape each other no matter how much you try to forget, deny and run. Somehow you always end up in each other’s faces. Sometimes quite literally.

A/N: There are a couple of reasons why Ivar chooses the nickname “Sif”: first of all, it fits the compliment he is trying to give you in that scene as Sif is described in the prose Edda as the lovliest woman of all. Secondly, Sif is also called a prophetess and Ivar slowly starts to realise that you gained some inside into the designs of the Gods when the two of you got married. And thirdly, there is a dispute if Sif was faithful to Thor or if she had some wild adventures with Loki and maybe even Odin. And let’s be honest, in Vikings, nobody would be too surprised if a female character was being unfaithful with her husband’s brother (hey, that actually happened in the series) or his father (oh, wait, that happened as well :D ), and Ivar really doesn’t trust anyone (but who can blame the guy for that growing up in the environment he did).

Also, thanks to a @youbloodymadgenius for pointing out the reading-mistake in the part before, that happens when you leave in things to correct them later and then don’t proofread :D Some anachronisms are bound to happen, but that one was not supposed to turn up.

Entwine - Caught By Desire

I came to like Ivar; he was difficult at times and open and honest at others. Sometimes he got irritated easily, sometimes he was the picture of patience. But we talked a lot and got to know each other a litte better over the week following our wedding. Ivar was busy trying to convince Björn to take him with him to the Mediterranean, stubbornly asking every single day, but always receiving the same answer. Björn didn’t want Ivar to be killed and he would not be able to take care of Ivar during a raid. Needless to say, it frustrated Ivar to no end.

I sat on our bed, mending one of Ivar’s tunics, when he crawled into the room. I could see his frustration, anger, and exhaustion in the set of his shoulders and jaw and I inwardly gave a sigh. When he had reached the bed, he looked up at me, before he dragged himself onto its edge.

“I cannot believe him. I cannot understand why my own brother will not take me with him. It is my right, my duty as a son of Ragnar Lothbrok to go carry his name into the world. It’s selfish of Björn not to take me.”

He did not look at me, but I knew he wanted me to support his argument and agree with him, but…

“I disagree.”

His head whipped around almost instantly, but his words came slowly. “What did you just say?”

“I said, I do not agree. I do not think Björn is selfish. I know, you are a good fighter, but you will always be put on the spot. You cannot outrun a trap, you cannot keep up with with a charging army. You would be the oak leaf on Björn’s Ironside.”

“The oak leaf?” he asked.

“Do you not know the story of Siegfried, who slayed a dragon and bathed in its blood, which made his skin impenetrable? The leaf of an oak had fallen on his back and stayed there during the bath, leaving one small spot untouched by the dragon’s blood. It was here that he could still be harmed.”

“You mean to say I am weak? I am a weakness?” I could feel the anger radiating off of him. He clenched his fists so hard, I was sure his nails were digging deep into his skin, so I took his hand and made him open his palms.

“No, I do not say that you are weak. I mean to say that he would have to take care of you, make sure nothing unforseen happens to you. And he cannot take that responsibility in battle.”

“He doesn’t need to!” Ivar’s blue eyes flashed violently, then like the sky before a vicious storm they started to darken. “Even if I should die, I would go to Valhalla, so I am happy to leave.”

“Maybe you could live with that, but others don’t.”

“What are you talking about?” he asked, angry and confused by my words.

“Your mother would be devestated should you die.”

“She knows she has to let me go. We have talked about this often. She knows.”

I put the tunic aside and looked at my hands. I felt my cheeks redden a little.

“I don’t want you to die. Not yet, anyway. I like you and I would very much like to get to know you better before you get to ride into Valhalla.” My voice was quiet, thin, insecure, and I hated the sound of it, but I had Ivar’s full attention now. He touched my chin and turned my face so I looked at him. In between the anger and the frustration, there was a small smile pulling at his lips.

“You like me? Your moody, irritable husband? The one you never meant to marry?”

He seemed amused and taken aback by that confession.

I nodded. “You forgot stubborn.” I added and he laughed.

“But why?” Ivar then asked, openly vulnerable. “I am a cripple. I am… as you said, stubborn. I am not always nice. And I do things you do not approve of. I want things you don’t understand.”

“That does not mean that I cannot like you. We are different, yes, but this is as much an opportunity for each of us to grow, as it is a challenge. You are irritable and headstrong, but you are honest and never tell me lies to spare my feelings. You have moments when you take care of me, small things you do without even noticing. The way you look at me now, like I matter and you can’t believe you matter to me.”

Now it was Ivar’s turn to blush, and he looked away for a moment.

“You might be the first person who has known me for a while, who doesn’t want to kill me.” He chuckled lightly. But then he turned serious. “You actually care about me so much that you want me to stay here with you?”

I smiled and gave a nod. “I want to get to know you better. I want to spend time with you. Did you not know that?”

He shook his head. “I was not aware of that. I thought I had only been a convenient solution to your problems.” His face was still in wonder, when he suddenly clapped his hands together. “So it is decided. I will not go with Björn to the Medeterranean.”

I looked at him delighted but surprised. “Really?”

“Really.” He took my hand in his and kissed my knuckles. Then his glance fell at the tunic in my lap.

“Is that my favourite tunic? What are you doing with it?”

“I’m mending it. You tore it last time you used it. Why is that such a surprise to you?”

“I guess I still need to understand that you actually like me. It’s…kind of a new concept to me.”

I smiled at my handsome husband. “Did you know that you have the most stunning eyes I have ever seen? You are beautiful, Ivar, you really are.” I said suddenly. Once I had started blurting out the truth, I couldn’t stop.

Now he grinned. “You think?”

I grinned back and nodded. Ivar moved a little closer and looked into my eyes. Then he stroked my cheek and gave me a chaste kiss, his weight resting on the other hand. I got a little caught up in his kiss and accidentally knocked his hand aside, causing him to crush into me, taking me down onto the bed with him. Both of us laughed and he rested comfortably over me. He looked at me for a moment then he brushed some stray strands of hair out of my face and kissed me again. This time still soft, but with some fervour to it. He sighed, when our lips parted and his gaze found my eyes fairly quickly.

“Have I told you, that you are beautiful, my Sif?”

I smiled at the nickname. Sif, Thor’s wife and the loveliest of all women. Then I gently shook my head no.

“Well, you are. You really are.”

We fell into a comfortable companionship over the next few weeks. I did chores to make everyday life a little easier on him, he was at his best behaviour whenever he was around me and sometimes brought me small gifts. Once, he even found me some blueberries because he had noticed that I liked them a lot. But still, I started feeling restless. I had been brought up a shield maiden, not a house wife and princess. I performed nothing but simple chores and did not get to train my combat skills at all. Day by day, I started getting more and more irritable and moody, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on the problem, as I was as happy as I could be in the life I was leading now. At least, I thought I was.

It had been a simple mistake. The servant girl had accidentally spilled some water on me during dinner, as she had been startled by Hvitserk pinching her buttocks. My reaction was far from appropriate; I had jumped up and slapped her across the face before I even realised what I was doing. Everybody around the table had gone quiet and all eyes were on me, so I blushed heavily and apologised for my behaviour. Funnily enough, I heard someone chuckle on the other side of the table.

“And what do you think is so funny, Sigurd?” I asked in a voice demanding an answer. He seemed surprised at first then he just shrugged.

“Nothing, Y/N. It’s nothing.”

I slowly started walking towards him and from the corner of my eyes, I could see Ivar shifting in his chair with anticipation. Normally, I didn’t mind Sigurd, but today, I was furious. I slammed my hand on the table beside his plate, after he had turned back to his meal, clearly unconcerned about my anger. Well, he did paid attention now.

“I will not ask you again, what did you think was so funny about that?”

He looked up at me and shook his head, still a smirk on his lips. Oh, how I would have loved to punch that grin straight off his face.

“I only said to Ubbe that you and Ivar are a match made by the Gods of War. You both have a temper that is hard to contain.” Sigurd explained.

I still stared at him. “And that made you laugh? Why?”

It was Ubbe who answered this time: “Well, I never thought I’d ever meet someone as moody and irritable as Ivar. Turns out, I was wrong. That made Sigurd laugh.”

I cocked an eyebrow. “So, my temper amuses you?” I asked, still angry.

Ubbe shrugged. “Well, that and the thought of Ivar getting a taste of his own medicine.”

“Normally, I am not prone to violent outbursts like this…” I said. How did the brothers get the impression, I was ill-tempered?

Hvitserk’s eyebrows almost shot up into his hairline at that. “Oh, but you are.” He chuckled. “At first, I thought you were only trying to impress our brother, but sometimes you even win against him in arguments. It is hilarious to see him beaten at his own game, to be quite honest.”

“I do not…”

Aslaug gave a tiny cough and then quietly added: “Well, you two are pretty opinionated and loud when it comes to voicing those opinions.”

Now Ubbe, Hvitserk and Sigurd were laughing.

“You and Ivar are shouting at each other all the time. The first couple of times, we thought we had to send in people to prevent you from going at each other’s throats.” Björn added to the conversation.

I looked at Ivar, who shook his head. “No, my dear brothers, no. We are not shouting at each other, we are simply discussing matters and war strategies and…”

Hvitserk rolled his eyes. “Last night, you were arguing about the shoes you left beneath the bed but were sure Y/N had forgotten outside. Last week, there was too much salt in your food. The day before, you had forgotten to get the yarn Y/N needed. I could go on for ages.” He was clearly trying to surpress his laughter.

“And let us not forget the time you carried Ivar over the threshold on your wedding night.” Björn snickered.

“Do you not even realise you are fighting most of the time?” Sigurd asked, astonished.

“We do not fight.” I said frowning deeply.

“We argue. But we get a little passionate at that.” Ivar added.

“We know why Ivar is frustrated, but where does your aggression come from, Y/N?” Hvitserk asked.

“Is it being married to the biggest jerk among Ragnar’s sons?” Ubbe grinned.

“Could have had us all, but had to marry little Ivar.” Hvitserk chuckled.

“Shut your mouths, you idiots, you have no idea who I am and what I had to do!” I realised that there were tears in my eyes.

“Well then, who are you?” Sigurd asked simply.

I looked at him angrily, but then I heard Ivar’s voice, softer than usual:

“What is it that makes you angry? What are you missing?” I could see his own insecurity in his face. We both knew, we hadn’t had sex until now. He was afraid that he couldn’t give me what I needed. He could not, but sex was not the problem.

I walked over to him and sat down at his side. “I…I miss my old life sometimes.” I told him quietly.

All eyes were on me, as I went on: “I miss training as a shield maiden. I miss fighting. I miss my family. I want my revenge. Some day.”

Ivar looked at me for a long time. Then he gave a nonchalant flick of his wrist.

“Then go train. Fight. But you cannot leave without my permission. If I stay here in Kattegat for you, you stay here for me.”

I gave a nod. That was a big concession he made, allowing me to train with the other shield maidens and warriors. But still, I had lost a little more hope that I might one day exact my revenge.

A few hours later, we sat in our bed, not yet sleeping, when I realised, Ivar was looking at me intently, studying my facial expression.

“I never realised you were unhappy here in Kattegat.” He finally said solemnly.

My head turned quickly to him. “What?”

“I wasn’t aware you were unhappy.”

I shrugged and leaned into him. It came easily to me these days. “Neither did I. I thought I was quite happy. But sometimes life surprises you.”

He put his arms around me and smiled down at me. “You are usually happy here?”

I smiled. “It beats being alone somewhere without a place to call home. Yes, I miss my old life and I hate the people who destroyed it, but I am as happy as I can imagine here.”

“What exactly happened?” he then asked softly. I still hadn’t told him. “You promised you’d tell me one day.”

I swallowed against the lump in my throat and stared straight ahead at the wall. I was afraid, I’d burst into tears if I looked at Ivar.

“You…you know that my father was an Earl at the coast of Jutland and he married my mother, who had been a famous shield maiden and friend to Aslaug. Together, they built a loyal community and a nice little fortune. Their earldom grew and thrived through the years, the lands brought good crops, the sea provided enough fish, and everybody was living well. I was treated like a princess by our people and our lives were joyful. I was growing up and I found a warrior my father approved of and we were supposed to get married after the summer.

However, my uncle had not been that lucky. His lands had fallen barren and he blamed my father for his misfortune. My father took him in, but behind closed doors, my uncle became jealous and started to build an army to overthrow my father and his supporters. After Midsommar, they killed my father and his most loyal supporters in their sleep. Everybody else they gave a choice: follow them and live or renounce them and die. Within a couple of hours, my life was torn apart, my family dead, my former betrothed had chosen my uncles side. Of course, I would never follow somebody who had killed my family, but for some reason he let me live.”

Ivar shook his head. “So, your uncle killed all your people?”

I had fought my tears until now, but now my feelings broke their way through the façade. I gave a nod and sniffed, brushing the tears away. “Yes, everybody who would not bow to him. From my parents to my helpless little brother.”

Ivar’s brows furrowed. “Then why did he spare you?”

I shrugged. “It’s not like he told me. I just know he had the chance, but instead he held me captive.”

I looked at Ivar, who had this annoying, all-knowing smirk on his face. “I have a theory; he intended to marry you to make his claim to the throne legitimate.”

My eyes widened, I hadn’t thought of this. But of course, Ivar’s tactically thinking head had seen right through it.

“But how did you get to Kattegat? Did he let you go or did you flee?”

I shrugged. “I ran away in the night. They didn’t guard me too heavily.”

“What does ‘not heavily’ mean?” Ivar chuckled.

“I had to kill three guards. But after that it was quite easy to find a horse and some food.” I shrugged.

Now Ivar burst into laughter. “My wife, my gorgeous, deadly wife just walked out of imprisonment by killing three guards. And you probably didn’t even break a sweat, did you?”

“They were sleeping on the job. It was easy, they never saw me coming.”

“Remind me to never leave any weapons out when you’re angry, Sif.” He laughed.

I turned serious almost immediately. “I could never kill you, Ivar.” I knew about our bond. Our lives were entangled by now and I wasn’t sure if one would survive the other’s death. I also knew what it felt like to be betrayed by someone you loved.

Ivar looked at me, his interest spiked. “You know more about the future than you want to share with me, don’t you?”

I shrugged again. “I know very little of the way things will turn out.” I evaded his question.

But Ivar wasn’t fooled easily. “But you have seen things. You know things.”

“I know about things that might be, or not. I saw short scenes, but I am not a seer. I don’t know if they will come to pass. I saw them when we got married.”

“Have you seen the future before?” he asked, now seriously curious.

I shook my head. “No, never. I have never had visions or dreams. I have always been most ordinary.”

“Until now.”

I gave a nod. There was only one thing that had changed. I shook my head in confusion.

“I am not quite sure what it is with your family, but the Gods have plans for you.”

Ivar gave me a contemplating look. “Yes. I know. The question is; which role are you going to play in this ever changing game?” his voice had a slight edge to it that told me to be careful now.

I drew in a sharp breath. “What do you mean?”

He shook his head and tutted at me with a sad smile. “Don’t act as if you don’t know. You know as well as I do that by now, someone will have told you. Or you have thought of it by yourself. I am… I am not a real man. I will never father a child. I will never be able to satisfy your…cravings or fulfill all of your needs.” he spat out.

I met his gaze head-on. “I do know. But who says, I have ‘cravings’?”

“Don’t you all?” he asked back. “All of you…women?”

I shrugged. “Not just like that. We’re not animals.”

“So, you wouldn’t just…say, run off and shag my brother?”

I looked at Ivar evenly. No need to act shocked or annoyed. “No. Why would I? I am your wife. And I can keep my urges in check. Also… your brothers are jerks.”

Ivar smiled a little at that. Then he became serious again. “We need to find a way to keep people from waiting for an heir too soon. But I will need an heir someday.”

“Is there no way…?” I asked, trailing off, but looking at him questioningly.

Ivar just snorted. “I wish there was. I will probably have to ask you to go to bed with another man at some point.”

I swallowed hard. “If it has to be done…”

He looked at me with something like admiration. But there was an underlying slyness to it, I didn’t like. “You would do that for me?” he asked.

I sensed a trap. “Only if you ever asked. Only for you and by your bidding.”

Ivar chuckled. “My clever, selfless princess. I have really come to like you, you keep me on my toes.”

I grinned. “Likewise. Never a dull day with you.”

“I take that as a compliment.”

“As well you should, Ivar. I could never be with a man who doesn’t challenge me intellectually. I do not care about these other needs as much as I care about intellectual companionship.”

Ivar took my hand in between his and looked down onto them. With a small smile, he looked up at me. Shook his head and chuckled. Then he drew closer and kissed me, burrying me beneath him. He sighed into my mouth and and hugged me tight. “How do you always know what to say?” he asked breathlessly. Maybe he didn’t get aroused by it as other men did, but he still enjoyed the closeness and the familiarity it created. He softly carressed my cheek as he drew his body to fully cover mine. And then I could suddenly feel him against my thigh. Half-limp, but not all soft. I immediately looked up at Ivar with astonishment. He noticed and realised what I was excited about, then turned red and nervous and suddenly it was all over. I made a mental note that there was still some hope. Ivar, on the other hand, was upset. He rolled off of me and turned his back to me in shame. His body curled in on itself and he stayed silent. I just lay there beside him and didn’t quite know how to save the situation, which was when I decided to take one of the largest steps into this deep, dark ocean that was our marriage.

I slid closer toward him, hands shaking, and started to scratch his neck. He liked that, I had noticed as much. He was tense at first then started to relax a little. And in the end, I just hugged him from behind and pressed his back to my chest, burrying my face in the space between his shoulder blades. For a moment, I wasn’t sure if he’d push me away, but in the end, I could feel him exhale deeply and take my hand in his.

“Y/N”, he whispered, “I am sorry.”

I shook my head and shushed him. “Don’t be. Right now, the Gods have other plans for you. They need you to concentrate on what lies ahead. They cannot have you think about your children.”

I felt him shake slightly. “How do you know that?”

“I just do. There is something coming and I don’t know what. But I know it will bring challenges and changes.”

“But we…will we stay the same?”

Now I chuckled. “We hardly will, we haven’t even found out who we are and how we should treat each other.”

Ivar went silent. It was a thoughtful silence and in the end he emerged with a sentiment:

“I have grown fond of you. Maybe I even love you, my future queen. I don’t want you to ever leave my side.”

“Well”, I quipped, “I will have to leave for practice tomorrow morning. Torvi promised to take me with her.”

He turned his head, so I could see his smile. “You know what I was talking about.”

“I do, don’t I?” I grinned and gave him a peck on the cheek. “Just promise me one thing, Ivar: Don’t go, where I can’t follow.”

Far Cry 5 | Hurk Drubman Jr./Female Deputy | Fluff and Angst

chapter one

The first time she disappears, Hurk thinks nothing of it, even if she had just left mid-conversation. He’d only known Deputy Bailey Correa for two days, and while he’d instantly liked her for both her penchant for blowing shit up and the fact that she’s fine as hell, he doesn’t know much about her. He knows that she’s a cop, and he knows that the Seeds have a real creepy hard on for her, but he has no reason to keep track of her daily habits.

She resurfaces the next day with a far away look in her eye, spacey like she’d gotten really fucking high and hadn’t quite sobered up yet, but fairly normal. Hurk had had no reason to believe she’d even met Jacob, let alone gone through the first stage of his “re-training” program.

The second time she goes missing, Hurk does start to worry. He asks Eli Palmer about it, but he only shrugs and tells Hurk that she probably had other shit going on. They are in the middle of a war after all. This time, it takes her five days to resurface. And when she does, she’s covered in blood and has a wild look in her eye.

“You look like hell, Ladybug.” He says softly, grabbing her elbow when she sways to stabilize her.

“Feel like it, too.” She grumbles, dusting her pants and smearing the blood worse.

Then she disappears again a week later, and stays MIA for two fucking weeks.

The Whitetail Militia goes DEFCON One, locking down everything and pulling scouts from the entire region all at once. Hurk has a real problem with just hunkering down and hoping Bailey comes back in one piece, so he takes to driving all over the region. Nick Rye has already been searching for her from the sky, and it doesn’t take much convincing to get Sharky patrolling the water in his fishing boat. Dutch Roosevelt checks in often, asking anyone who might be listening if they’ve found her, and each time there’s a resounding chorus of no.

Sheriff Whitehorse is convinced that the eldest Seed has her, and is calling everyone back to the jail to plan an assault on the Veterans Hospital where Jacob makes his base. Hurk’s listening to the sheriff on his radio when he sees a big box truck pulled over on the side of the road. The driver is in front of the truck taking a piss, and Hurk wastes no time popping the guy so that he can safely loot the truck.

He’s opening up the back when he hears a groan above him, then something drops off the roof with a heavy thump.

Hurk peeks around the back of the truck, gun in hand, at the still lump of fabric lying on the ground. Then it moves and groans again, and Hurk trips over himself getting to it.

“Oh sweet Monkey King, Bailey!” He gasps, breathless, going to his knees next to her lifeless form. She’s skin and bones, covered in blood and shit, her eyes wide and glassy, and if she weren’t taking short, raspy breaths, he would think she’s fucking dead. “Hey, hey, Bailey, it’s me. It’s Hurk. Holy shit.” She’s cold when he touches her, and he can feel every bone in her body as he puts his arms under her and lifts her up.

He puts her in the passenger seat of the box truck and buckles her in, then runs to the driver side and climbs in. The key is blessedly still in the ignition, and he turns it and tears off onto the road, scaring the shit out of himself when he nearly flips the goddamn thing.

She groans and her head lolls to one side, and Hurk reaches for her hand without thinking, seeking connection, needing to know that she’s actually here and she’s alive and that this isn’t just some hallucination.

“Where am I?” Bailey groans, squeezing Hurk’s hand weakly.

“You’re okay. You’re safe.” Hurk replies, glancing over at her. “We’re headed to the Wolf’s Den. Everythin’s gonna be okay.”

“No. No, not the Den. Can’t go there.” She says, groaning again and shifting, getting upset.

“Okay. Okay, where?” He asks, confused. Why wouldn’t she want to go back to the Wolf’s Den?

“Anywhere. Just not there.” And then she passes out.

So Hurk takes her to Dutch. He doesn’t know where else to go, and he thinks she wouldn’t want too much of a fuss made over her (why else wouldn’t she want to go to Eli?), and Dutch isn’t exactly known for making a fuss.

“What the hell happened?” Dutch rasps when Hurk pulls up. He’s got a shotgun cradled in his arms, obviously on edge since they just rolled up to his bunker in a cult cargo truck, and a sour look on his face. “She looks like shit.”

“Yeah.” Hurk huffs, unbuckling her and lifting her gently out of the truck.

“Why didn’t you take her to Eli?”

“She didn’t wanna go to the Wolf’s Den.” Hurk replies. “And you’re closer than the jail.”

“Why not take her to your pop’s place?”

“Are you kiddin?” Hurk snorts. “You honestly think my daddy’d help?”

“Well, probably not.” Dutch replies. “C’mon, then. Let’s get her inside. I’m guessing Jacob starved her?”

“Good a guess as any.”

“Where’d you find her?”

“By that cult truck. She came to on the way here, but that didn’t last long.” Dutch leads him into a room with a bed and gestures for Hurk to put her down.

“I’ll start fluids. Get her warm.” Dutch says gruffly and leaves the room.

Hurk rummages through the lockers and finds a few scratchy blankets. He makes a face but covers her with them anyway, then sits next to her on the edge of the bed and rubs her arms and legs and sides vigorously. She groans and turns her head, but doesn’t open her eyes.

Dutch returns a few moments later and sets up an IV drip. He mumbles something about a dextrose solution, then leaves again. Five minutes later, Bailey is trying to sit up and pull the needle out of her arm.

“Hey, stop. You’re okay.” Hurk says, grabbing her hands and hanging on when she starts to fight. For a moment, she’s a hell of a lot stronger than she looks, and she nearly frees herself. But then she stops and sags back against the pillow, panting and staring at the ceiling with glassy eyes.

“Where am I?” She asks, her voice rough.

“Dutch’s bunker.” Hurk replies, letting go of her hands.

“Okay.” She huffs. “When can I get out of here?”

“Dude, you’re practically a fuckin’ skeleton.” Hurk says, incredulous. “What happened to you? You’ve been gone for weeks.”

“Jacob Seed.” She snarls. “He kidnapped me and starved me.”

“Why?”

“How the hell should I know? Keep me weak and useless?” She snaps, then takes a deep breath. “Sorry. I don’t know.” She’s quiet for a moment, then takes another deep breath and meets Hurk’s eyes. “Wanna know something really fucked up? I actually kinda feel bad for him. He’s fucked Pratt all up, he nearly killed me, but I feel bad for him. He talked about his buddy that died in Iraq, and how mean his dad was when he and his brothers were kids, and I can fucking see why he’s like this.” She huffs and bares her teeth. “God, I hate him. Fucking asshole. I gotta find a way to put him out of his misery. Get him the fuck outta my hair.”

“Sounds good to me.” Hurk chuckles, shaking his head.

She kills Eli Palmer a week later. Just marches right into the Wolf’s Den like a woman possessed, still skinny and weak, kills half of the Whitetails and blows Eli’s brains out. Hurk catches the tail end of Wheaty’s distress signal and heads toward the mountain the bunker is situated in.

He finds her standing over Jacob Seed’s hunched body, slumped where he’d died up against a rock. Her back is stiff, her fists clenched, and when Hurk reaches out to touch her shoulder, she whips around and takes a swing at him.

“Whoa!” He yelps, catching Bailey’s arm before she can actually hit him. “S’just me.”

“Sorry.” She replies, detached.

“I heard about Eli.” He murmurs. “I’m sorry, Ladybug.” She sighs and shakes his hand off her shoulder.

“So am I.”

Bailey sits at a table in the corner of the dining area in the 8 Bit Pizza Bar, carving lines into its surface with her hunting knife, looking like she’d just lost her puppy. Hurk’s been watching her for an hour already, nursing a beer and only half listening to Sharky’s ideas for Hurk’s Gate, wondering if it would be better to go talk to her or to just leave her alone.

He finishes his beer and chucks the bottle out the open window. On a normal day, she probably would have reacted to it. “Cult’s doing enough to destroy everything, they don’t need help,” she’d probably growl, punching his shoulder and laughing.

Today, she doesn’t even flinch. Probably hadn’t even heard it shatter outside.

Hurk sighs, grabs two more bottles from the fridge, and makes his decision. He doesn’t know if it’s just better to leave her alone or not, but it seems shitty to just let her wallow like this. So he crosses the room and opens the bottle with his teeth.

“Looks like you need this.” He says, offering it to her. She doesn’t even look up, just takes it out of his hand and tips it back, draining half of it without once taking her eyes off her carvings. “Whoa there, Ladybug. Take it easy.”

“Sure, Hurk.” She huffs, taking another pull from the bottle, shorter than the last.

“Penny for your thoughts?” He says, sitting down and opening his own bottle. “Or beer, I guess.”

“Just thinking about Jacob and Eli.” She says quietly, rolling the bottle between her hands and closing her eyes. “Don’t feel right.” Hurk doesn’t say anything. He’s not sure there’s anything to say. Instead, he reaches out and drops a heavy hand on her shoulder. He expects her to jump or jerk away from him, but she doesn’t. She just lifts her own hand and puts it over his.

“Anything I can do?” He asks, catching her fingers and stroking them with his thumb. She doesn’t respond for a long time.

“No, Hurk.” She says at last. “Thanks though.”

He should probably push, insist that she talk to him and let him in. Let him do something to make her feel more at peace at least. But he knows there’s nothing he can do.

So instead, he sits down in the chair next to her and drinks his beer in silence. He doesn’t push, he doesn’t do anything. He just sits with her.

Finally, after they’ve both drained their bottles and the sun has set outside, Bailey sighs and leans back in her chair. She’s still too skinny, her eyes are sunken in and her cheeks are hollow, but when she looks at him and smiles wanly, he can’t help but think she’s the most beautiful girl he’s ever met.

“You know, if you took a picture you wouldn’t have to stare so much.” She says softly, grinning when he huffs and rolls his eyes.

“Puh-lease. I’m just wonderin’ when you’ll notice that big-ass booger on your face.” He teases, laughing outright when she gasps and covers her nose and mouth with both hands.

“You’re a dick.” She growls, but the skin around her eyes crinkles and she starts to laugh too. She snorts and they both laugh harder, practically howling.

The 100 rewatch: 4x02 Heavy Lies the Crown

The season 4 premiere wasn’t that great, but this is much better and much more typical of the overall quality of season 4.

The Polis storyline is, for a change, actually quite good. I’ve always thought that season 4 did a much better job with most Grounder characters than season 3 or even season 2. And the storyline in and in relation to Arkadia is great, with Bellamy, Clarke and Raven having to do make difficult choices. In particular, Bellamy finds himself in the position to make a really tough choice, and the choice he makes really encapsulates his leadership style and worldview.

The title is another literary reference – after Dante and Poe, now it’s Shakespeare – although it is a misquote of the line “Heavy lies the head that wears the crown” from Shakespeare’s Henry IV. They supposedly chose to name it that way because they thought it sounded better – or maybe they just thought that would make it more obvious to the viewers that the theme of the episode was the difficulty of being a leader.

The flashback that opens the episode would have fit better as the opener of 4x01, which was much more about the fallout of the City of Light and people who died because of ALIE. (No surprise, since it was originally meant to be in 4x01.) It’s the introduction of another interesting new Grounder character, Ilian, whose family suffered a really tragic fate – ALIE made Ilian kill them or torture them in order to force his mother to take the chip. Seeing it all happen helps build sympathy for Ilian and makes it easier to understand his later actions. It’s also one of the few times we see Grounder farmers. I like the fact that the show isn’t focusing just on Grounder warriors anymore and that we get to see more and more of Grounders of different professions and worldviews.

In Polis, the leader who has to make decisions is Roan, who is preparing to meet the challenge of an ambassador of one of the other clans, Rafel, who is trying to use the fact that Roan is still recuperating from his injury and isn’t full strength, Roan is a good character to watch because he’s smart and capable, and morally grey – he isn’t one of the bad guys, but he can be ruthless and sneaky if he has to. The fact that he’s a very different leader from his mother certainly helps. This is emphasized when Echo, who is sparring with him, goes on about how awesome Queen Nia was, in her mind, for being so ruthless and murderous and not giving a damn about anyone other than Azgeda; After being questioned why he decided to accept the Sky people as the 13th clan, Roan finally tells Echo the truth about Praimfaya and that they need Sky people to survive it.

Talking about Roan’s chances in single combat, Octavia says Lexa kicked his ass when he wasn’t wounded, but she doesn’t know that the Nightblood basically gives you superpowers, which is only revealed later during S4

Kane is again the Chancellor – but we don’t learn if another election was held or not. He is mostly acting as a diplomat, however – he’s more of an ambassador, while Clarke pretty much acts like acting Chancellor in Arkadia.

Kane tries to reason with Rafel, and makes the good point that, if they are going to blame Sky people for the City of Light, they should also credit them for destroying it. But don’t expect Rafel to listen to reason. So Octavia eventually solves Roan’s and everyone’s problem by murdering Rafel, which is later portrayed as a heart attack. I should be generally against assassinations and Octavia using violence and murder to solve problems, but, you know what, I liked this solution.

Major development forward for the Kabby relationship: After the kiss last season, there’s a rather steamy, by CW-standards, sex scene and, while there is no “I love you” in so many words, the relationship between Abby and Kane is strongly affirmed. Initially, after their sex scene, we see that Abby used to wear her wedding ring on a necklace. She’s unsure or uncomfortable with putting it on again, as Kane sees it, but Kane tells her Jake is a part of her, But later Kane realizes that she is not wearing it – and they kiss, as Abby has just shown him that she has really moved on from Jake and committed to him.

Abby decides to go back to Arkadia to help Clarke and the rest find a solution for Praimfaya

In Arkadia, Clarke, Raven and Bellamy arguing over what to do; Raven is concerned thatthere are not enough volunteers to repair the ship. She also has insecurities and feel she shouldn’t be main engineer - Sinclair should be, but he is dead, Clarke replies that she’s in a similar position since she’s no Chancellor. However, they’re all basically back to their own season 1 roles, when they were the only ones on the ground and leaders of their people.

One of the most pleasant surprises about season 4 is that it found a purpose for Jaha and started using his character in a much better way, and even managed to make me finally interested and enjoying his character, even though he hasn’t actually changed his personality. This is probably because 1) he is not in position of power now, 2) he wants to and manages to be useful – as an engineer, which is his original profession, and 3) most importantly, he has a number of interesting interactions with the main characters that he didn’t get to interact much before, like Clarke, Bellamy and Raven. In the season when they are faced with particularly difficult leadership choices, which are similar to the situation on the Ark – having to make choices who will live and who will die because it’s impossible to save everyone; having lie to people in order not to cause panic – Jaha is both there to offer his perspective and advice (which may be good or bad), and as a cautionary tale: he is what they all used to hate and what they really don’t want to become, but now they are afraid they may be becoming like him.

The crux of the episode is Bellamy’s mission (with Monty, Harper, Bryan and Miller) to go into the Azgeda territory, to the remains of the Farm Station that Azgeda occupied, and retrieve a hydro generator that would help produce water for the people in Arkadia during the five years of radiation. They start off hoping to get it peacefully, by showing Roan’s seal. They get a hostile reception instead, but eventually the head Azgeda guy agrees to it. However, things change when they learn that the people working at the station are slaves…

…Let’s take a moment to emphasize the fact (for the benefit of all of those who like to portray Sky people/Arkers as the Bad Guys and Grounders as Good Guys, that, in addition to everything else we know Azgeda did under Queen Nia’s rule, like killing Arkers indiscriminately, including children, from the moment they landed, and blowing up a bunch of Arker civilians as a part of a political power play that wasn’t even about them, they also practice slavery, enslaving both Arkers and other Grounders.

…This is a big moment where the group has to decide whether to prioritize getting the hydro generator, or blowing it up to free the slaves. Bryan argues in favor of the latter, especially since he recognized one of the slaves as a friend of his, called Riley. (Now, I know that the fandom likes to make fun of Riley because of the way that this character was made important in spite of never being heard about before, but this is more of a problem in 4x05. I don’t see any problem here – we never saw any of the Farm Station before season 3, either, and we knew very few of the people on the Ark in season 1, and many we knew are dead. And the actor does a good job playing someone who has been traumatized and beaten down by slavery and abuse.) The group split votes – Bryan and Harper for freeing the slaves (Harper compares their fate to her experience of being put in a cage in Mount Weather), Monty and Miller for getting the hydro generator, so Bellamy makes the decision and chooses to free the slaves.

This decision is something I need to talk about a bit more. I love the way season 4 in particular has so many situations where there is no obvious right or wrong choice - neither choice is great and wrong in some way while good in another way, and you can make good arguments for either alternative. This is one such case. Personally, while I understand and respect the position that the hydro generator should have been the priority and slaves ignored, I was happy with Bellamy's decision, was rooting for him to make that choice, and it's what I would probably do. Regardless of how things turn out in the end, I think this is the better principle to live by: "We save who we can save today". (Which also reminds me of the decision Bellamy made in 2x04 – save the person who is in the most immediate danger and need.) There are many leaders in this show, maybe too many, who advocate the Big Picture thinking, which is a legitimate position if moderate, but taken too far, it can lead to (in the name of some hypothetical better future) present oppression, killing the people you're supposed to protect, executions for all sorts of silly reasons as on the Ark, letting innocent people die from enemy bombs, or cold blooded murder of an innocent person for "pragmatic" reasons - as Jaha did in season 2, using the motto "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". I don't trust anyone who uses that motto to justify killing other people rather than sacrificing themselves (which was how that character we all know and love used it in that well known movie that the quote comes from). And I don't fully trust anyone who does things in the name of an abstract notion of "people" or "my people" while not caring enough about individuals that make up that abstract collective

I liked Bellamy’s decision before I knew how things would turn out, and would like it regardless of the eventual consequences. But as it turns, out, if they had saved the hydro generator, it would have been for nothing, since Ilian will blow up Arkadia in a few episodes. This way, those people who had been slaves a couple of months of nice life back with their families.

Another minor in-character moment: when they are about to take the Grounder ex-slaves to their villages, Bellamy is again taking care of a little girl in the group.

Raven is angry over Bellamy’s decision, and Clarke at first seems to disagree, but eventually accepts it, and Bellamy he sticks to it and takes full responsibility. Clarke finally decides to tell people a half-truth: she tells them about Praimfaya, but claims they will be able to save everyone, even though, without the hydro generator, they can only save 100 people there. Raven gets to display my least favorite character trait of hers, getting all judgmental and b1tchy and sarcastically telling Clarke: “Your father would be so proud!” I dunno, Raven, if you think the people should be told the truth, why don’t you simply tell them? No one is stopping you.

Both Raven and Jasper compared Clarke’s decisions to that of Jaha and the rest of the Ark leadership. Except they forgot the minor detail that she hasn’t executed anyone, imprisoned anyone, or sent anyone to die.

Jasper is now in a very different, but still similar mindset from the one from season 3: he has embraced the “Seize the day” approach, and seems very cheerful, having a shower, singing, asking Monty to bring weed, and telling Clarke he doesn’t want them to survive, he wants them to live. But he is like that only because he knows it will all be over in a few months.

The song Jasper plays is “I Don’t like Mondays” by Boomtown Rats, which includes the line “Silicon chip inside her head”…

This is the last episode where Bryan appears, which is a shame, because he was an interesting character, and his and Miller’s relationship actually got some focus and development, unlike Miller’s mostly off-screen later relationship with Jackson. The actor got a role in another show, but instead of getting killed off, he was just written out quietly – he simply never appears after this episode, and we never learn of his fate. The first time I watched this, I didn’t even realize that the argument between him and Nate at the end of this episode was the end of their relationship, so I was later wondering “so where is Bryan?” when Nate and Jackson became a couple out of the blue. Rewatching this, I can see how this was the end of the relationship. I like the fact that Bryan (who, we have it confirmed now, is now the only survivor, aside from Riley, from the initial number of around 160 people who were on the Farm Station when it fell to Earth) refuses to condemn Pike and still feels loyalty to him – because it would be really unrealistic if everyone now had the same opinion about him. Bryan confirms that he basically never stopped supporting Pike, who he felt loyalty to because he saved his life and they spent several months fighting together, and simply chose his boyfriend over him. But I think the main reason why the relationship broke was not just political differences, but because, after Miller didn’t support or understand Bryan’s decision to prioritize freeing the slaves, Bryan felt that Miller doesn’t understand what he went through with the rest of the Farm Station people in those 4 months and the trauma and effect it had on him.

Timeline: It has been 9 days since the season 3 finale, which means it’s about 8-9 days since 4x01.

Body count:

In the flashback (which is technically in the timeline right at the end of season 3 or the beginning of 4x01), Ilian’s father, brother and mother got killed by ALIE-controlled Ilian. Add them to the list of people who died because of ALIE, We don’t see how the father died, but Ilian killed his brother and almost killed himself, and tortured his mother, and she eventually died of injuries.

Rafel, Trishanakru ambassador, killed by Octavia. (Good riddance- he was really annoying. We’ve seen way too many irritating whiny Grounders who rant about how Sky people are to blame for everything. That’s so last two seasons.)

Several Azgeda slavers got killed in the explosion of the hydro generator.

Tybe the head slaver, beaten to death by the freed slaves. Bryan revealed that he was the one who killed Monty’s father, saying he was therefore Monty’s kill, but Monty chose to do justice in a different way, letting the ex-slaves decide Tybe’s fate.

There are some pointers about the number of surviving people – from a list that Clarke made of the number of people that need to be saved. It’s a partial list: we learn that there are about 500 people Arkadia, 4000 in Polis (out of which 400 children), 300 in Tondc, and we see several smaller places with just a few people. Just counting the numbers we see, we get 4877 Grounders in addition to 500 Arkers (obviously, neither are exact numbers, since the numbers for Polis, Tondc and Arkadia were rounded), but it’s clearly not a full list, as we don’t see the numbers for, e.g. Boat people, Shallow Valley people, and many other villages and towns, so I don’t know if the numbers of Grounders in this part of Northern American territory is around 5000-6000 or more like 10.000.

Tales of the Hunt: What Remains pt. 1

It has been a long time coming, but we’re finally wrapping up this ‘arc!’ I hope those who have followed along this far enjoy what I offer this time, and know there’s more to come! Here’s to tomorrow! -PAE IV

Ribbons of smoke curled from where the roof was anchored to the shack’s walls, curling in tiny spirals beneath the night-watcher’s yellow glow. More billows out from where the front-door once stood. The room within crackles and groans as a growing-blaze eats its way through insulation.

Just outside the fire’s reach, the Old-Hunter slowly stems the flow from the holes Kakisi left in his shoulder. “You ought to warn me next time. Lucky I didn’t decide to keep those teeth.”

Kakisi responded with a wide grin, his mouth still stained with blood, “No promises, brother. Can’t think, much less talk, on such an empty stomach.” His thick-accent would normally make understanding him a challenge for some, but the words fell from a languid tongue. Enunciating each with a sluggish care, “Better bite when they don’t know it’s coming. Tension makes the meat tough.” He carefully works each joint and muscle with tired-fingers, stretching and cracking each limb.

“I’d like to think I’m a little more than ‘meat.”

“And I would like to never spend more than a minute in another closet.” The thin tails of smoke reached through the threshold as Kakisi massaged the last of his cramps. “And what is that you have cooking? Enough for two?”

“Just the strix. That cocky little sorcerer slipped through my fingers.”

Kakisi turned to the Old-Hunter with a perplexed frown, “Really? A strix? I did not have the chance to see her in action, but that is quite the surprise. What cause is worthy of one so reclusive?”

“The chance of a new day. They called themselves ‘Children of the Black Sun,’ so I can only assume they seek to bring about the end of this era. They present themselves as a force great-enough to consume the Order, and have shown their potential to draw our attention. However, most of this is hearsay until confirmed. Right now, our concern should be recovering what remains of the strix, and getting the hell out of here. Headquarters will want to hear about this.”

Kakisi strolled to the furthest-wall, “You finish-up with the barbecue. I will worry about making our exit.” Smiling, he gently patted the wall, which violently contorts under his touch. With only a nod of agreement, the Old-Hunter disappeared into a low-hanging cloud as rolled-in through the threshold.

Lucas let his ghostly-steed join the others. With the herd complete, their whirlwind began pulling the loose snow and debris from the ground around it. Even the Young-One felt its strength from several yards away. She tried to focus on staunching the flow from her wound, but the cyclone of ice and snow dancing beneath the silvery moonlight was slightly distracting. Cries were barely audible from within the spinning walls, but she could feel the beast’s panic. She pried her eyes from the vortex for a moment, gauging Lucas’ focused expression. There was confidence there, and that wall all she needed.

Lucas clasped his hands before his chest, fingers lacing tight between one-another. Eyes still locked to his trap, his voice cut through the cacophony, “Hear me and heed these words! You have trespassed upon this world, and tainted it with malice and bloodshed. You have been weighed against the laws of our world, and deemed Unholy. I, Lucas Blackfeather, on behalf of the Woodsmen Clan and the Holy Order, sentence you to return the otherworlds. I bid you safe-passage by the hooves of Grani.” The cyclone came to a reaching-peak, like a twister flipped upside-down. Its point stabbed through the night-sky, plunging through the abyss, and opening to somewhere beyond. “Farewell.” The winds rose to a ear-splitting shriek. The pounding of hooves grew. And when the Young-One could hardly bear its presence, the vortex began to lift off of the ground. Like a living-veil of white, it peeled from earth.

Lucas let a lungful of air free as his spell resolved. He was careful not break eye-contact, but let himself relax for the first time in far too long. Like cloth pulled through a metal ring, the cyclone was whisked into oblivion. All that remained in its wake was a circle of frost-starved earth, and the shape of two people at the center.

As the moon’s pale light touched the ground, Lucas and the Young-One watched a thin stream of mist rise from the figures. Without a word, they both rushed into the circle.

A man, naked and shaking in the frigid air, knelt there. Clutched to his chest was what remained of Yoko. Her robes still sparkled under the moonlight, but their color had waned as countless year caught up to her. The rest of Yoko fared far worse; unblemished and smooth skin turned a brownish-black and drawn tight against the bones. As the two came to his side, they could see tears falling onto Yoko’s cheek. The Young-One looked to Lucas for an answer, but the pain he wore was enough to tell her there was no easy solution. He couldn’t make this problem vanish like before.

“You should go back to the truck. You can wait there for me. No need for you to see this. Even the Old-Timer wouldn’t blame you.” His voice was hoarse, fists clenched at his sides. From the corner of his eye, he could see the Young-One shake her head. Sighing, “Sometimes… Sometimes there’s not a neat and tidy ending to these tasks. Sometimes you have to make mercy out of a mess.” Speaking to the man, “You, can you hear me?” The man only shivered as the night stole the heat from his bones. Lucas’ frown deepened, “I didn’t think so. If she’s anything to go by, they’ve been at this for at-least a century, so he could have been raised knowing a now dead-language.”

“Why does it matter?” The Young-One asked, wondering why Lucas didn’t just put the poor guy out of his misery.

Another sigh, this one heavier than before, “He needs to know why, child. He must not leave this world believing us to be the hands of darkness. I doubt he had any memory of his change; no concept of why this has happened. Such sorrow, such pain, can corrupt the soul. I’ll not have the end of one monster bring about another. And… I need the body clear of any blood that might be spilt, there’s a chance it could bring just enough of her back to cause trouble.”

“Well, I don’t suppose you’re fluent in… every language?”

“No such luck, but I have a ‘friend’ who could lend us a hand.” Lucas pulled what appeared to be a small doll from his pocket. He let it rest in his palm for just a moment; long enough for the Young-One to get a good look. It seemed to be molded from clay and grass, several strands poking out from its finger-smoothed surface. Despite the severity of the situation, she couldn’t help her heart’s hop when she recognized the shape of a rabbit with two comically oversize ears. In his other hand, Lucas held that emblazoned lighter. With a quick flick, a tall flame rose from the flint. Carefully, he fed the figurine to the flames. The doll was engulfed in a flash, like a strip of phosphorus. Its ashes hung in mid-air for an instant, before being swept off in a sudden gust. From the shadows which caught the remains, a shimmering silhouette of gold came forth. A tiny, semi-transparent, nose poked from the darkness, sniffing hesitantly at the night-air.

The rest of Lucas’ “friend” followed its nose, and the Young-One could barely restrain the urge to squeal as it came into view. The creature had an ethereal presence; the snow behind it just visible through its soft-gold form. It moved across the snow in steady hops without leaving a trail. It was undoubtedly the fattest, fluffiest, and most long-eared rabbit the Young-One had ever seen. When it came to a rest between Lucas and the man, she realized it was also the largest: reaching Lucas’ shin without sitting-up.

Knowing it purpose, the rabbit went right to work. It gave the man a quick sniff, to which he took no notice, before sitting onto its hind-quarters. With both ears stretched straight-up, it reached Lucas’ shoulder.

Taking one last breath, Lucas began, “I’m sorry for what you have lost.” As each word left his lips, different words left the rabbit’s. The spoke with Lucas’ voice, but the Young-One could hardly decipher a single syllable. The man perked-up immediately upon hearing a familiar-tongue. As Lucas continued, the man stared only at him, as if no-one else was speaking on his behalf. When light found the man’s face, the Young-One could see frost forming along the path of his tears. Her heart broke at the sorrow in his eyes.

“There are no words which can ease your suffering, but know you need not prolong this pain. We offer you release, as we too have had our lives twisted by the Unholy. We-” The man’s grip started easing with each word Lucas spoke, until he made mention that his companion was something corrupt. Catching both off-guard, he bared his teeth before curling himself around the corpse.

Though his words were muffled by the silk robes, the rabbit echoed them in a tear-choked voice, “You lie! Yoko was my child, my world! You do not know her as I do!”

“Even the worst fire will provide a gentle warmth to those at the right distance. Only from afar can we see its destruction. You knew her as your heart wanted you to, not as she truly was. Let us take the burden of what was done by her hand. We will bear this memory. Please, accept this mercy.” The man leaned back for a moment, studying the one laying in his arms. With a sigh that seemed to carry the last of his strength, he let Yoko slide from his grasp. Lucas gave the Young-One a distinct nod, “Go ahead.”

Trying not to show how heavy a burden he’d just placed on her, the Young-One creeps beside the man. Making each slow move deliberate and as obvious as possible, as-if she were dealing with a drowsy-beast, she slid her arms beneath the body. As she tried to pull it away, the man resisted. In that instant, she could feel how weak the cold had made him. Knowing he couldn’t resist her for long, he releases the corpse before turning back to Lucas. The rabbit spoke again, hope just barely heard over his broken tone, “Will… will she be there?”

Lucas held the man’s gaze, “If you hold her in your heart as you pass, perhaps you’ll find her.” The man searched Lucas’ eyes for a sign of deceit, but all he found was pity. Another tear cut across the frost forming on his cheeks as he turned to face the moon above them. In its somber light, he found something which a brought a smile to his lips.

The moment Yoko was clear, Lucas pulled a Bowie knife from beside his boot. When the man offered his throat, Lucas swung wide and fast. That razor-edge slipped through flesh and muscle without hesitation. Steam poured forth alongside warm life. With only a few final shudders, after so many years lost to madness, Li left his shell behind.

It didn’t take long for Lucas and the Young to have what remained of their foes wrapped and secured within the truck’s storage. They shared a silence as they went about their grim task. When they could finally rest within the warmth of the cab, she broke the quiet, “Was all of that a lie? The stuff about finding her?”

Lucas, who had been pondering over a three-quarters-empty pack of cigarettes, lit another. “Does it matter? That devalue having peace in his last moments?” The Young-One didn’t have an answer. All she had were questions to be saved for a better time. As the heavy odor of smoke filled the cab, they waited for the Old-Hunter’s return.

My first jrpg: Phantasy Star IV

This is the amazingly spectacular cover the amazing megadrive/genesis rpg, Phantasy Star IV. I believe it retailed new in the neighborhood of 100$, maybe a bit less. I think Chrono Trigger was 70$, maybe more. I never got to buy Phantasy Star IV so it had to be rented from our old Blockbuster. Of course if I hadn’t seen the sprawing, multi-page long review/mini walkthrough of the first part of the game in an issue of Gamefan that I got for Christmas I never would have bothered with this game. I was young, obviously, and mostly played stuff like Sonic, Ristar, Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter Super/Turbo..whatever. I really digged the genesis Aladdin game too and actually owned it. I was starting to get into anime because Sailormoon would air at 2:30 EST on Fox Kids so i would get to sneak a watch if I was sick from school, it was a holiday or we’d gotten out early. I LOVED the show even though I had no idea what was going on. I wanted more things that looked like that. So, I see PS4 in Gamefan along with all the screenshots and ingame cutscenes of characters like Zio, who reminded me of one of Queen Beryl’s lackies but also was super evil and scary looking to me. The monsters looked awesome and way more detailed than the typical badnik mooks I spent my weekends bopping to release cute little flickies. So, its friday during June, I think I’d just gotten out of school and mom took me to Blockbuster. I searched the shelves for Phantasy Star IV and couldn’t find it so I asked mom for help. When I was really little and wanted to find a game I would sometimes get her to help me search the massive shelves. Mom quickly found it and asked “Is this the game?

Yeah...I believe the Shining Force games got a similar treatment at least on the sega genesis. For the record I don’t hate western style fantasy art and love collecting musty old AD&D books for the art and like Warhammer but yea..as a kid that cover art made nauseous. Its not quite Megaman 2 nes bad but its just so....WRONG. At least they still kept Chaz’s original color scheme and design I guess..but what they did to Rune was unforgivable. I won’t comment on Rika. My biggest problem with this style of art is that it makes you think Phantasy Star IV is some kind of medieval D&D inspired game. The core Phantasy Star games are best described as fantasy sci-fi, sort of like Star Wars. You have interplanetary travel, cyborgs,ecosystems controlled by AI sometimes prone to turning evil but but people fight with swords,axes and use magic. It really is a lot like Star Wars setting wise since the first planet you start on, Motavia, looks and feels a whole like Tatooine. It was a very fun but confusing game to me. I loved the music and anime stills used for cutscenes but I would explore certain locations and BOOM the music abruptly switches to fast paced battle music and I’m now on a different screen with more detailed versions of my party facing detailed sprites of bad guys. I eventually figured out what I was suppose to do by selecting attack with everybody, but I’d see certain people would do a lot more damage when I did this. After several more battles I discovered techs/magic but the only ones I understood were those that did direct damage and made cool explosions. If I selected a spell that did something besides direct damage I just assumed it was completely worthless. Its been so long but I think the farthest I got was to Zio’s castle but I never got past the first boss and had to return the game. I rented it again a few weeks to discover my file had been written over(I think) or there was someone else’s file. I clicked that one and was confused even more because I was on this snowy planet with melancholy music and my party had different members and some were missing. I left the town and saw I had a swanky spaceship so I went back to Motavia, the first planet. I wandered around and for the life of me I could not figure out where Alys was. What happened to Zio? I played a bit more and some snooping around one town made me realize what had happened to Alys and then I just got into more random battles for fun because I had Wren the cyborg now and I thought all his moves were badass. I played a bit more but then got tired of all the aimless wandering and went outside to play. Really dating myself there... So that’s the story of my first rpg. I never did buy the game but i later discovered the wonderful world of emulation in the 7th grade and was finally able to play stuff like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4,5,6. Yes, I am one of those many Final Fantasy posers who’s first game was 7. I could exaggerate and say it was FF1 because my sister had an nes and played it but she rarely let me touch her console ever. I just knew her frustration about where to go after she got some flute. But back to the topic, I also downloaded Gens (obviously a genesis/megadrive emulator) and the first game I downloaded was....Sonic 3! THEN I downloaded Phantasy Star IV, got super far and was able to truly appreciate this wonderful and mostly forgotten jrpg. But..I didn't beat it. I got to sky castle, to the ::SPOILERS:: fight against a certain someone from PS1 and my game would always freeze when I was about to defeat him. I fruitlessly searched for a solution to my problem but alas I could never find a method to bypass the bug. We have way better emulators now and PS4 has been ported to steam and other consoles, always bundled together with other classic genesis games such as Shining Force 1 and 2, Landstalker, Streets of Rage etc. I’m going to beat PS4 one day, probably very soon. I have played and beaten so many rpgs, both western and Japanese(mostly Japanese) and they are my favorite genre of video game by far. So, thanks Phantasy Star IV, for introducing me to rpgs and making me into the lifelong weeb scum I am today.

Guilty - Alternate Ending IV

Genre: Angst, smut

Pairing: Reader x Baekhyun / Reader x Kai

Summary: *REQUESTED* You find yourself getting more and more frustrated with Kai as he keeps hanging out with his ex-girlfriend, Krystal, against your wishes. Your solution? Hang out with Baekhyun instead.

KAI

You rose from your seat to hug your friend. “It’s been a while,” you said.

“I know,” said Luhan. “I haven’t been to Seoul in almost a year.”

You both sat down at the table and started looking through the menu. Luhan was in town for a few days before going back to Beijing and you were spending the day together.

“How has China been?” you asked. “Is it good to be back?”

Luhan nodded, turning a page in his menu. “Yeah. I miss Seoul though…”

The waitress approached the table, taking your orders before disappearing into the back.

“How have you been?” Luhan asked. “How’s your job?”

“It’s been going well. I think that it’s a good field for me. It’s kind of fun.”

“Is it awkward working with Krystal?”

You shook your head. “It wasn’t...until the other day.”

Luhan raised his eyebrows. “Did something happen?”

You sighed. “I don’t wanna talk about it…” You pushed a . Luhan, being a little older than you, was the kind of person you’d go to for advice. He always gave the best advice. There wasn’t a time when you asked him for his help with something and you’d ended up regretting it. You decided you would ask him. “Actually, there’s something I do wanna talk to you about…”

Luhan said, “What’s up?”

“It’s about Y/N…”

“What about her?”

“I don’t know,” you said. “She’s just been acting weird. I don’t know how I feel about it.”

“What’s she been doing?”

“Well we got into an argument the night before i left because I hadn’t told her about the trip. We spent the weekend together, so I didn’t want to ruin it with that news. I ended up ruining it anyway,” you explained. “She didn’t speak to me while I was gone. It was safe to assume that she was still mad at me. But she’d never been that mad at me before, so I was confused. She never returned my calls or texts and if she did, it was me talking to myself basically. She answered one of my calls and I heard Baekhyun in the background so—”

Luhan nearly choked on his water at your words. When he finally cleared his throat and pulled himself together, he said, “Baekhyun? In the background?”

“She said that she was going out to dinner with her friends from school and Baekhyun must’ve been there already…”

“You don’t think that’s weird?”

“Why would it be weird? They’re friends…”

Luhan shook his head. “Eh, never mind...”

You wanted to press him for his thoughts, but you decided to leave it alone. “You know what? We should do something fun.”

“Like what?” he asked. “When?”

“Tonight,” you said. “Let’s go to the club tonight. I’ll invite Baekhyun, too. He hasn’t seen you in a long time.”

You wanted to have a good time tonight. You wanted to have fun and not worry about Krystal or Y/N for a few hours. You didn’t want to think about the fact that you cheated on Y/N with your ex. You didn’t want to think about the fact that Y/N has been acting weird since you got back from Japan. You didn’t want to think about the fact that Luhan just implied that Baekhyun was more than just friends with Y/N. You wanted to have a drink and get drunk, pushing reality away for a little while.

Luhan smirked. “Still a lightweight?”

You returned his smirk. “We’ll see.”

BAEKHYUN

You were excited to see Luhan. You hadn’t seen him since you graduated. The last time he was in town, you weren’t in town and you weren’t able to see him. You smiled as you saw him through the hotel’s window.

Kai wasn’t there yet and you were grateful. You hadn’t seen him in a few weeks. You realized that you hadn’t seen him since you’d started seeing Y/N. Before Y/N, hanging out with him was no big deal. You’d play soccer together, get dinner or drinks together, and just hang out. But you hadn’t considered what it would be like to hang out with him, knowing that you’d been seeing his girlfriend behind his back. Would you slip up? Would you start acting weird? Would he be suspicious of your behavior? A pang of guilt stabbed at your heart.

Luhan gave you a tight squeeze before you both sat down on one of the couches in the hotel lobby. “Kai should be here soon. He forgot his ID at home and had to go back… How have you been brother?”

You sighed, crossing your legs. “It’s been stressful, but I’m hanging in there…”

“Is it girl problems or something?” he asked. It was as if he’d read your mind or something.

“Something like that...”

Luhan chuckled. “It seems like everyone is having issues with women lately. Do you have a girlfriend now?”

You shook your head. “It’s complicated...It’s like one of those situations where you want someone you can’t have, you know?”

You wished that you could tell Luhan everything. But you were both friends with Kai. You didn’t want to put him in that position. Luhan wasn’t one to go running his mouth if you told him a secret, but you wouldn’t go that far. You knew that it would bother him and he’d feel conflicted about the whole thing. The only person you could talk to about your affair was Y/N, the very person that you couldn’t have.

You wished that she’d break up with Kai. You wished that she’d just go ahead and do it quickly, before things got more complicated. The two of you were already in too deep, at this point. You’d fallen in love with her. You wanted to love her, for real, without having to worry about the fact that she already had a boyfriend, without having to keep your relationship a secret. When you were with her, it felt like you were dating. Those days Kai had been away were the best; You’d gotten to spend so much time with her.

You wanted to be the one to tell her that you loved her. You wanted to be the one that she called late at night when she couldn’t sleep. And you wanted to take care of her on the days that she was sick and bring her snacks when it was her time of month.

It had been so easy to fall in love with her. You’d been friends first, never crossing that boundary. But then after you kissed that night, you realized that you loved everything about her. You loved her smile and her laugh and the way she walked. You loved the way she wrapped her arms around you when you hugged her and the way she looked at you, with those bright, sparkling eyes.

Luhan asked, “What’s her name?”

You wished that you could tell him that it was Y/N. You wished that you didn’t have to hide it anymore. Part of you wanted to tell Kai yourself, confessing everything. But it wasn’t your place to do that. Kai was your friend but it was up to Y/N to tell him. But would she do it? Would she actually do it? Or would she just keep stringing you along? Was she going to end up hurting you, too?

Just knowing that she was in a relationship with Kai hurt. Watching her ignore his calls hurt. Hearing her say that she was going to hang out with him hurt. It all hurt you because you loved her, more than any other woman. And the longer she put it off, the more it hurt.

You smiled faintly and said, “I can’t tell you that...”

KAI

You were feeling pretty tipsy. You were glad that you made this last minute decision to go to the club. It was a guys’ night out. You hadn’t gone to a club in over a year. It wasn’t really your thing; You preferred going to bars over nightclubs. But Y/N had dragged you out a few times. You’d enjoyed it but there was only so much partying that you could do.

Luhan shouted, “Should we get more shots?”

“Yeah,” said Baekhyun. “Let’s go get more.”

Luhan said, “I’m gonna go to the bathroom. I’ll meet you at the bar, okay?”

Baekhyun nodded and the two of you headed upstairs to the bar area, pushing past couples kissing and sweaty bodies. Music blared in your ears as you walked upstairs. A Jay Park song was playing and everyone was dancing, you noticed, walking up the staircase.

“How many shots should we get?” you asked Baekhyun, shouting over your shoulder.

“Uh, six?” he asked. “Two each.”

You nodded. It seemed reasonable. You ordered six shots, handing the bartender your credit card. When you turned around Baekhyun was smiling, giggling to himself as he looked at something on his phone.

You nudged him. “What are you smiling about?”

As you glanced over at his phone, he put his phone down at his side, laughing. “No one…”

“Do you have a girlfriend we don’t know about?” you asked him.

He didn’t answer your question but he laughed and you laughed too, even though you’d caught the contact name. Your eyes could’ve been messing with you. Maybe it was because you’d been drinking, but you were sure you saw Y/N’s name on the screen. They could’ve been talking about literally anything but the conversation you and Luhan had earlier got you thinking. You’d never considered it until he said something.

You shook the thought out of your head. They were just friends. They were probably exchanging memes or something. You probably saw the wrong name. It was most likely a misunderstanding.

Luhan found you and the three of you grabbed the shots. You clinked the shot glasses together and you swallowed the liquid fire, burning all the way down your throat.

“I think I’m good on the shots for now,” you said after your first shot.

“I’ll take it,” Baekhyun said, picking up your shot glass. He took it easily, slamming the glass down on the bar. “Come on,” he said, waving his arm. “Let’s go downstairs!”

You shouldn’t have let Baekhyun take that shot. Or the one after that. He’d had one too many—No, several too many. You lost track of how much he’d actually been drinking.

He was too drunk to party anymore at this point. You’d had fun tonight but, unfortunately, Baekhyun had had a little too much fun. You hadn’t realized but he took those shots pretty close together, agreeing to more before the other shots had a chance to catch up with him. And all of that alcohol hit him at once, like a wrecking ball.

Luhan helped you get Baekhyun into the back of a taxi to get him home. You looked at the clock. It was three twenty eight in the morning. Baekhyun was still fussing about being fine. He kept saying, “I don’t know why you guys are like this” and “I’m fine.”

Luhan said, “You’re not fine. I’m fine. You’re drunk.” It was somewhat true. Luhan was still fairly drunk but neither you or Luhan was on Baekhyun’s level.

“I’m sober,” Baekhyun insisted.

The ride was fairly silent, the only sounds were coming from radio and the wind from the rolled down windows.

In a few minutes, you had arrived in front of Baekhyun’s building. You and Luhan hauled Baekhyun out of the taxi after paying, with you and Luhan on either side of your friend. You walked into the building and took the elevator to the seventh floor. Baekhyun put in the code to his apartment and you helped Baekhyun remove his shoes.

“I’m sorry I ruined the night, guys,” he said.

Luhan chuckled. “It’s okay. We still had fun.”

“I was getting tired anyway,” you said, yawning. You weren’t used to being out this late.

You grabbed Baekhyun by the shoulders, steering him toward his bedroom. He took off his coat, throwing it in a corner somewhere. He sat on his bed for a moment before he frowned.

“What’s wrong?” you asked him.

Baekhyun stood up, heading toward the bathroom, connected to his room. “I think I have to throw up.” Luhan followed him in the bathroom while you lingered in the doorway. As he knelt down at the toilet his phone fell out of his back pocket, landing near your feet. You picked it up. As you held it, you recalled your suspicion from earlier.

While Baekhyun was throwing up Luhan knelt next to him, patting his back. You took matters into your own hands, unlocking the phone. The most recent text was one that he’d sent to Y/N. You’d seen correctly. Your heart dropped as you read the messages they’d sent each other:

Are you having fun?

Yeah. I’m drunk and I miss you…

She hadn’t replied yet. Knowing her, she’d probably fallen asleep. He missed her? What did that mean?

You grew more and more curious. You scrolled up, skimming their messages. There was a message from the day you heard Baekhyun in the background when she’d answered your call.

I’ll pick you up at 8, okay? Wear something nice ;)

What time are you coming over?

I’ll pick you up from class.

Are you at my house already?

What snacks do you want?

When are you going to tell him?

I love you, you know that?

Those were some of the messages you’d seen. You only saw bits and pieces but you knew what was going on here. You looked at the call history. It was full of calls to and from Y/N. Most of them were recent. You pressed the home button and locked the screen.

Baekhyun was starting to stand up after throwing up. Luhan glanced at you through the mirror, raising his eyebrows at you. But you didn’t say anything. You’d fill him in on their so-called friend’s activities.

You tried to keep your facial expression neutral as you handed Baekhyun his phone. You said, “Your phone fell out of your pocket. I don’t know if you noticed…”

“Thanks,” he said. You moved out of the way as he made his way to his room. “I’m so tired.”

“I bet,” Luhan said. “I’ll get you some water.”

“Okay,” Baekhyun said, beginning to undress himself, stumbling a little as he did.

You followed Luhan into the kitchen. He shuffled through the cabinets, looking for glasses. He said, “Did something happen? What’s with you?”

“While we were at the club, I saw who he was texting,” you explained, careful not to speak too loudly. “It was Y/N, Luhan. While I was holding his phone I confirmed it. It was her. They’ve been texting and calling each other. I don’t know how long it’s been going on but it must be long enough for him to say that he loves her.”

Luhan didn’t say anything. He must’ve been at a loss for words, too. “Are you serious?”

You nodded. This wasn’t something to joke about. “Yeah… I don’t even know what to do. Like, part of me wants to go in there and punch him. The other part wants to go to her house right now and demand answers.”

Luhan shook his head. “You still have alcohol in you. I wouldn’t do that.” He poured water into the glass and you followed him into Baekhyun’s room. He was already asleep, so Luhan put the glass of water next to his bed, along with an aspirin for the morning. And you put the trash can from the bathroom on the floor next to his bed while Luhan turned him on his side.

At the edge of his bed sat something that was familiar to you. It was Y/N’s sweater. You knew that sweater because it was one of her favorites. You weren’t even sure if they had slept together but if she had clothes here, what other reasons would there be?

As you and Luhan left the apartment, you couldn’t help but feel lost. Your girlfriend was seeing your friend behind your back. And the worst part of it all was that you wouldn’t have even known if you hadn’t decided to go out tonight. You didn’t know what to feel.

You’d cheated, too, but it wasn’t anything like this. You hadn’t had sex with Krystal. You hadn’t told her that you loved her. And you hadn’t been seeing her behind Y/N’s back like she’d been doing to you.

“I’m sorry,” Luhan said. You nodded. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know…” You paused. “There’s actually something I didn’t tell you before. I cheated on her, too…”

You found yourself in and out of sleep. You were upset. You didn’t know how to feel or what to think of all of this. Your girlfriend had cheated on you. And with someone you considered to be one of your friends, of all people. You were upset, angry and hurt upon finding out all of this.

Did Y/N really love him back? Was it just Baekhyun who was in love with her? Or did she feel the same way? Did they both love each other? For how long had this been going on? You wished you could’ve gone through their messages some more.

Your mind shifted to Krystal again. If Y/N cheated, you may as well have had sex with Krystal. You may as well have gone all the way rather than stopping. But you thought about Y/N and quickly stopped yourself from giving in to her. The two of you had already betrayed each other in some way or another. At that point, what did it matter?

You looked over at the clock. It was just after nine in the morning. It wasn't like you were going to go back to sleep with all of this on your mind. You'd gotten thirty minutes of sleep at best, if that. You shook your head, deciding to get out of bed. You were going to go over to her house, you decided, putting some fresh clothes on. You considered calling her out to talk, but then decided against it. You'd just go over there, making a surprise visit instead.

On the drive there, you planned how you'd do it. You didn't want to blow up at her. You didn't feel as bad as you did before. Maybe you weren't as upset because it no longer mattered. You'd been lying to yourself. You didn't love Y/N as much as you used to. At what point your feelings started changing was unclear. But you were going to stop lying to yourself and to her. You'd tell her what happened in Tokyo and then you'd tell her that you knew about her and about Baekhyun, too. Would she feel guilty for cheating after you confessed that you cheated too?

You took a deep breath before making your way into her building. You had no idea where you were going to begin, you realized, as you rang the doorbell. But you didn’t care. You needed to get this out. Maybe you'd feel better once the whole truth was on the table.

Y/N came to the door in a T-shirt and shorts. She rubbed her eyes, looking like she just woke up. She probably had. After all, she wasn’t the one who had been out all hours of the night like you had. “Kai? What are you doing here?”

“I have a confession…”

She raised her eyebrows. “What's going on? Do you want to come in?”

You shook your head. “You were right.”

“Right about what?”

“About Krystal. In Tokyo, I did something I shouldn’t have. She went down on me…I haven’t been honest about my feelings for her.”

Her lips parted. You supposed that she hadn't been expecting that. You thought that her reaction might’ve been different. You expected her to be angry, pissed, at you for lying about how you felt about your ex. But she wasn’t. And you knew why. She was just as guilty as you were.

“I’m sorry,” you told her.

She nodded. “So how do you feel about her, then?”

“I don’t think I was ever over her,” you explained. “I still have feelings for her and when she came to my room, I realized that. I wasn’t being honest with myself.”

“I actually have something I’ve been wanting to tell you, too,” she said.

This was it. You weren’t going to have to confront her about it first. The two of you seemed to finally be being honest with each other. Even though you were under pretty fucked up circumstances, you were relieved that everything was finally being put out into the open.

“I’ve been sleeping with someone...”

“I know,” you said, after a long pause. She furrowed her brows, in confusion. “I already know. Baekhyun, right?”

She just stared at you for a few seconds. A million thoughts were probably going through her head right now. She looked horrified. “Did he tell you?”

You shook your head. “No,” you answered. “I figured it out on my own.”

You watched as she began to cry, a single tear falling down her cheeks. “I’m sorry, Kai. I’m so so sorry.”

“What made you do it?” you asked.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. It just happened. We were drunk...I was in too deep and didn’t know how to tell you…”

You bit your lip. You felt yourself getting more and more emotional. “Do you love him?”

She opened her mouth and then it closed again.

You asked her another question instead. “How long?”

She didn’t answer, biting her lip instead. “I don’t wanna lie to you…Let me explain—”

You cut her off. “You don’t have to explain anything. I cheated on you, too, but you know the difference? You cheated in the worst way and with my friend, at that…”

“I'm sorry,” she said, apologizing again.

It didn't matter how sorry she was. Her being sorry didn't erase all the times she lied to you, all the times she had been in Baekhyun’s bed...All the lies. You chuckled to yourself, amazed at how all of this came to be. “Shall we just end things here?”

“It doesn’t have to be like this, Kai!”

“So how should it be, then? What, are we supposed to be friends or something?” You paused. “Should we stay together, then, and continue this game? All the lies?”

“No…”

“Good,” you said. “Let's not do this anymore, okay?”

She took a deep breath. “Look, we both hurt each other…”

You took a deep breath, too. Your emotions were beginning to get the better of you. “I know...I think we both just need some time to process this.”

“Okay,” she said. You turned on your heel to leave, but she grabbed onto the sleeve of your hoodie. You looked back at her, her eyes still swimming in a sea of tears. “I'm sorry, Kai…”

That Vlog though

So considering my video editing skills are zilch. I though that even though I would love to push my boundaries, with such little time I thought I should probably not venture down the crazy video path. Ive decided that Im just going to speak to the camera like one of those girls in the millions of makeup youtube tutorials.

I looked back at my last post and had a think about if it was really what I wanted to say in my Vlog what I realised was that I don't so much want to speak about the technology, but more so about the practice of Creative Technologies I decide that my views on this approach are much more interesting than that of the technology itself. Im not sure what I was thinking when I wrote the last post.

I decided this after looking back on my last four weeks, in particular the Cards for Play project. How I had my first experience of Collaborating, working as a team using our different skills to produce our final project.

RESEARCH

After this change in direction I began researching some thoughts on creative technology. I used to think that creative technology was using technology in a creative way. And I don't think this is wrong at all as everything we have done so far has needed us to use technology creatively. However Ive learned it is so much more than that. When you first search what is Creative Technologies this pops up.

“Creative technology is a broadly interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field combining Computer Technology, Design, Art and the Humanities. The field of Creative Technology encompasses art, product design, or advertising and media made with a software-based, electronic and/or data-driven engine.”

Wikipedia definition

Now I know wikipedia is no valid resource, but its definition did interest me. It touches on all aspects of Creative Tech, from the technology itself to the categories it covers, however it fails to emphasise this part here. “Creative technology is a broadly interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field.” Now for me In my four week experience I have come to realise that it is this aspect of Creative Tech that is what it really is. This is actually a good definition of creative tech I believe, however it fails to identify what its broadness means.

I found that there are many other definitions that touched on the practice of Creative Tech but, like this Wiki definition failed to say what it’s broadness means. I even took to our own definition of creative technologies from the AUT website.

“When you study creative technologies, you’ll learn how to look at problems in the world and provide solutions that are unique. You’ll see how a spirit of collaboration, whether between students or between students and the industry, is beneficial in creating ideas that change and shape our world.”

Despite this quote more being about studying CT it does mention the point I want to emphasise. collaboration. This describes what I want to talk about however not in the context I want.

Eventually struck gold. I stumbled across AUT’s very own Stefan Marks and Andy Connors what seems to be a Bible. Named CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPLICATIONS. Now at first I was like what the heck what is this but just under its surface are some really great ways of explaining what creative technologies really is.

“We have come to the conclusion that there is a power in not defining Creative Technologies as a discipline, but more as an approach of inquiry and action that can deliver outcomes that disciplinary approaches cannot.”

The texts words really hit me because I could so easily relate to it with my experience of creative technology. It was a great find, and for me really sums up what Creative technologies really is in my experience anyway.

I found an interesting statement that is similar to the quote I found also in the same book.

Post world war II. A man named Arthur Ragsdale - American Dairy science association said:

"Whether we are engaged in research, teaching, extension, milk production , processing, manufacturing or merchandising dairy products, we have before us the greatest opportunity in history. One lesson of this war is the possession of a sound and creative technologies tends to assure military and economic security.”

This quote really epitomises what Creative technology although it may not be directly related, it shows us that even back then people were beginning to realise the power of a multi disciplinary field. Rather than solving problems just one way why not come at it form several different angles. Exactly what creative technologies is today.

I managed to find another definition which I also took a liking to that epitomises what is said in the first definition from Creative Technologies for Multidisciplinary applications.

“The job title itself is less important than being open to a hands-on and holistic view of technology as part of communication, as part of business, as part of the human experience, and therefore as part of culture.”

Yet again describing this idea that Creative technologies is not so much about the technology its a way of approaching Technology.

In the comment section of this website, many people had left their own viewpoints on this definition. I found one of these comments very interesting from a guy named. Jon Andrews

“In my opinion, too many people call themselves a creative technologist when actually they’re creatives or planners with technical knowledge. Without the “doing” you’re not fusing creativity with technology – more than likely you’re leaving that for somebody else.”

Now I don't exactly agree with this comment as over the past few weeks I’ve learned about this thing called collaborating. For me collaborating is bringing skills other people posses that you may not as well as offering your skills in return that that person may not have in order to achieve the a final outcome.

I learned that in the Cards for Play project that working in a team allows you to produce an outcome that you would never be able to achieve alone. But together drawing from each others different skill sets you are able too. I don't think that idea that some people are false claiming to be a Creative Technologist is right as. No one will ever be able to be an expert in everything the field covers. For me collaboration is more so like the definition in Stefan and Andy’s text.

Being a creative technologist is the approach and inquiry in which you use the technology. If collaboration is part of this, you are still a Creative technologist.

For me Creative technology is not a definition of a discipline or job title, it is a way of going about using technology.

After this I began writing out a script if thats what you want to call it. Since I don't plan on having rapid changing frames and crazy motifs story boarding has no purpose but a script is the next best thing. I had some success with this however I am not very happy with my wording so far and there are a few more points I want to add in. Its so hard because there is so much to say and there is so little time.

Game 360: Quest for Power (1981)

Problem #1: Nothing Arthur or Galahad did was done “for power.”

Quest for Power is another insulting game from Crystalware, a company that was either knowingly scamming its customers or so clueless about what made a good game that they must have never played one. I admit that their titles at least sound interesting–I was sucked in by the backstory of House of Usher (1980), for instance–but if anything they’ve gotten progressively worse as time passed, losing core elements that made them, if not “good,” at least memorable. A commenter named Tronix recently posted some background on the company, and while we can’t take an anonymous Internet comment as gospel, what he says makes sense given the quality of the games. I’m particularly disturbed about the party where they “skipped town” while still owing money to a lot of developers. I hope the developer of this game, Marc Benioff, managed to recover.

There isn’t much to say about Quest for Power. Like the other Benioff/Crystalware collaboration, The Forgotten Island (1981), it’s a short adventure with a few light RPG elements, recalling in structure the old Adventure for the Atari 2600 (1979). It takes about as long to play and win the game as to read the manual, and the lengths that Epyx went through to puff up the manual for the re-release (as King Arthur’s Heir) are particularly absurd given the paucity of actual gameplay.

You have to have several artifacts before you enter Canterbury.

The backstory casts you as Sir Galahad, son of Arthur’s “good friend” Lancelot, who Arthur designates as his heir to the English throne if he can find and return the Scroll of Truth, which Merlin has hidden somewhere on the island. Good lord, that sentence alone manages to mangle the Arthurian legends in about a dozen different ways. The whole point of Galahad’s story–in the few sources where he actually appears–is that he’s too pure for the mortal world, and he is taken bodily into heaven at the end of the Grail Quest. Arthur and Lancelot are hardly “friends” by the end of Arthur’s reign; Merlin should be long gone; and the realm wouldn’t be known as “England” for over 400 years.

There are several places to buy necessities. This particular list makes it look like I’m about to murder someone and then dump the body off-shore.

Your little icon sets out from Camelot to explore the land, which I guess is roughly shaped like Britain except that for some reason it’s surrounded by a wall. Your journey will take you to the Caves of Somerset, Hastings Mountain, Sunderland, Essex, the Castle of Skenfrith, the Black Forest, the Eagle Stone, Canterbury, Hillsborough by the Sea, and Leeds. (Of these, only Canterbury has any authentic Arthurian history. “Hastings Mountain” doesn’t even exist.) The manual makes it sound like these are all exotic and interesting places to explore, but really they’re just names written across the screen with maybe one NPC and a treasure item.

This would have made World War II a lot easier.

To win the game, you have to defeat a series of enemies (The Devil of Skenfrith Castle, the Black Wizard, Gogmagog–none of them appear in actual Arthuriana) and acquire a series of treasures. For instance, you explore the Caves of Somerset to find the key to Essex, where you find Moses’s Rod (where’s Kenny when you need him?), and so forth. The enemies named in those parentheses, plus a couple of dragons, are the only fights in the game.

Canonically, Galahad could probably do this.

Combat is a matter of random rolls. Each round, each fighter does 1-9 points of base damage against the enemy but each round, one of the two combatants gets 10 added to his roll. For instance, you might take 7 damage while doing 19 in the first round, but in the second the Black Wizard gets the bonus and does 15 damage to you versus your 3 damage to him.

Looks like I got lucky this round.

As you start off with only 3 hit points, the first combat–whoever you fight it with–is a risk. But if you can win, you’ll gain enough power and extra hit points that further combats become much easier. After your second or third combat, you’re basically invincible.

In battle against Gogmagog.

Gold chests pop up randomly as you explore, and there are a few places where you can spend your gold on an axe, a rope, and a boat. There are three NPCs (Ambrosius, Amadas, and some random guy in Essex Castle) who give you spectacularly unnecessary hints, and one of them must be bribed over 1,000 gold for his.

I’m sure I would have found it on my own anyway.

Once you’ve found enough artifacts and have built up enough power from killing enemies, the guard Oberion (facepalm) will let you into Canterbury. There, you find the Ark of the Covenant. If you open it without the three major artifacts (Anselm’s Staff, Solomon’s Ring, and Moses’s Rod), you’ll be melted in the manner of the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark. With the three artifacts, you find the Scroll of Truth.

Granted, I had the emulator speed cranked up to 250%, but it still only took me about 20 minutes to run around the map and do what I needed to do. The game minimizes its control scheme; the manual actually brags about this. All action is mapped to the joystick except for the (T)rade command. If you have certain items (torch, boat, rope), you’re assumed to use them when the situation calls for it.

Returning the Scroll of Truth to Camelot wins the game. You get a picture of the throne room at Camelot and your score is displayed.

You can tell it’s Camelot by the “C” on the banners.

But of course it doesn’t end there. As with half of Crystalware’s titles, there’s supposedly a Great Mystery lurking beneath the surface, with players encouraged to solve it and send their solutions to the company, with promises of a $250 cash prize. (The Epyx re-release removes any mention of such a puzzle.) As usual, I not only didn’t solve it, I don’t even know what they’re talking about. Is it something you’re supposed to find in the game? A hidden message? Is it simply winning the game?

Can anyone identify the source of the image Crystalware used? Reverse image searches were no help.

The manual says that to solve the mystery, you must a) read the entire manual, b) “go to each of the magical places and talk to all of the magical people.” “It is then,” the manual says, “you may understand the very neurotic mystery.” Did the author not know what “neurotic” means, or is that a clue?

I wonder if they paid anyone.

The only three people to talk with in the game are Ambrosius, Amadas, and the guy at Essex. Amadas, at Hastings Mountain, says that “you must have Solomon’s Ring and Anselm’s Staff and Gogmagog to make it past Oberion!” (Once you defeat Gogmagog, his power “fuses” with you or something.) Ambrosius is hanging out by something called the Eagle Stone, and he says, “Ah, son of Arthur [???], the staff is in the caves.” Essex says, “The Ring of Solomon is in the Skenfrith Castle.” I’ve looked for anagrams, initialisms, and other wordplay and can’t find anything. Thus, I’ll give a reward of $50 to whoever can solve the mystery, which is five times the value of the GIMLET I gave to Quest for Power. It’s the first game so far with 1s straight across the board.

Let’s talk about how we got so far down the list:

1. I’m having trouble with Planet’s Edge (1991). The introductory application starts up okay, but every time I hit ESC to move on, DOSBox crashes with a “corrupt MCB chain” error. I’ve tried multiple versions. I’ve tried running INSTALL and configuring video and sound different ways. I’ve tried running it with LOADFIX. I have not tried another computer with a different configuration of DOSBox, which I will next week after I move.

2. Minotaur: Labyrinths of Crete (1992) turns out to be a two-player game. (You’re supposed to connect over AppleTalk.) There’s a “single-player mode,” but it just lets you explore the dungeon, pick up items, and test them, not play in any meaningful way. It moves to the rejection list.

3. I thought I had a working copy of OrbQuest from reader Lance M., but I lost it or never downloaded it or something. I had to ask him for it again. He came through, but I had already half-drafted this entry by then. It’ll be soon.

4. I’m moving this week, so I didn’t have time to approach a game as complicated as Ultima VII.

Anyway, this means I need two more games to add to the “upcoming” list, replacing both Quest for Power and Minotaur. The earliest game on my list that I haven’t played is Sands of Mars (1981), another Crystalware title. We have three more, in fact, and I think I’m going to try to cover them all in one entry, but we’ll leave it as Sands of Mars for now. After that comes a random roll! It lands on Moraff’s Dungeons of the Unforgiven (1993). For those worried that I’m going to get too far away from 1992 before playing Might and Magic IV/V, don’t worry–we’re going to have a discussion next week about designating “landmark” games that I should prioritize in a given year.

im getting a mitsubishi eclipse for my 1st car but im going to be payin for half of the insurance on it and i want to know if it'll be considered a sports car under the insurance.it'll be between a 1995-1999 and one of three models(RS,GS,GS-T).im pretty sure the gs-t is a sports car but what about the other two? the insurance will already be high enough being a teenager and a male so i just want to make sure if any one of those would not be considered a sports car under car insurance.thanks for the help.and plz no smartasses talking about oh no another teen driving they really need to get that law change blah blah.just people that will help.o yea im in texas if that would make any difference
