Final Exam (1981)
"Why are you so apprehensive? When are you going to realise that the whole world isn't made of psychopaths skulking about?"
"But they are out there. They do exist. People are killed every day for no reason at all. Perfect strangers wake up in the morning and decide, 'Hmm, I think it's a good day to snuff somebody". And these are people who eat at our restaurants with us, use our highways and vote for the President, which probably explains something about him, too. I'm not paranoid. I'm just facing unhappy facts."

MoviesOr... The Holdovers
Great! Another movie I wish I had watched on a theater screen. I remember seeing the trailer for The Holdovers somewhere and closing my eyes to not be spoiled because I knew I would end up wanting to watch it. I didn't even know why, but I knew I would love it. I wasn't wrong. For my Saturday night in, I had a hurting shoulder, popcorn, an almost empty bottle of prosecco, and the living room all to myself, so it just made sense to watch this movie. When the Searchlight logo came on, I knew I was in for a treat. I mean, I can't remember a single bad movie that came out from them.
Through the first half-hour, I first wondered why they don't make films like this anymore. It's a recent movie, but it feels so old in an excellent way. If someone had said that it came out ages ago, probably together with Dead Poets Society, I would've believed (if it wasn't for Da'Vine Joy at least). I can't explain it, but I love this type of movie. Then I pondered if I should stop watching and save it for the big screen, since it's still playing in a few theaters in London. However, I was too deep into it, so I decided that if I really wanted to watch it on a theater, then I would, but on a later date.
This motion picture tells the story of a teacher who's assigned to stay at a boarding school taking care of a few students who weren't able to come back home for the holidays. Alongside him, there's the kitchen chef, an incredible woman who recently lost her son. Together, they babysit five boys. The movie is about Angus Tully, played by Dominic Sessa, but apart from him and among the other four boys, Teddy Kountze also stands out, played by the charming Brady Hepner. It really hurt my heart when he, and the other guys, managed to come back home leaving poor Angus behind, but Dominic (who, to my complete surprise, has this as his first major role) has such a charm that that hurt didn't last long (still, his mischievous absence was felt and now I just want to watch more movies with the actor, Brady).
The winter ambiance, the feeling of neglect, and the coming-of-age complexion are the perfect combination and here it works so incredibly well. The clichés are also here, with the strict teacher that everyone hates but that has a good heart that just happens to be guided by a moral compass (that doesn't seem to find a balance). His ending, was a mechanism to make the character leave its comfort zone, and even though stupid and unrealistic for me, shows his growth. I'm glad Paul Giamatti got an Oscar nomination. Same with Da'Vine Joy. She was so (unnoticedly) good in High Fidelity that it only feels fitting for her to be recognized in every role she's in.
I can't help but think about how I would've managed an education in a school with only boys. That seems to be the only perk (but a curse at the same time). It seems like the parents of these kinds of boys are always too problematic, and that the school is really the only safe place. Maybe that's the way of Hollywood portraying these types of environments and surroundings, like I mentioned before with Dead Poets Society, which has kind of the same vibe. If so, I wouldn't mind spending Christmas and New Year's there. I mean, I once spent them all alone in a small apartment without my boyfriend, so I guess I'm accustomed to the feeling of being left behind. With the feeling of being a holdover.
Update: I had the chance to watch this on the theatre (or should I say cinema? Ergh I never know) on the last Saturday of February and it was incredible. I've noticed details I have missed the first time — like the hemorrhoids cream of Paul — and I laughed and got emotional a lot. But the most incredible part was to meet a girl there, Tini. I just sat on her table (such a me move) and we bonded very quickly. But she made my heart melt into the floor when she asked, out of nowhere, to take a picture of me. I felt so seen. Not a holdover for a few seconds.

Movie Idea
This was based off a dream I had, and I just think this would be a crazy movie idea!
So the cast in the movie would be Mason Thames, Miguel Cazarez Mora, Brady Hepner, Ethan Hawke, Sadie Sink, Bailey Bass, Jack Champion, and Hailee Steinfeld!
Mason and Miguel are the main characters.
Ethan Hawke is Mason and Brady's father
Brady is Mason's older brother.
Sadie, Jack, Hailee, and Bailey are the characters that help Mason and Miguel.
So it's in the zombie apocalypse and Mason and Miguel are immune to the infection, and as far as they know they are the only ones that are immune.
Now the only ones who know about this are Ethan and Brady, but the others will find out eventually.
So there is this bad guy that found out about the two boys, and they kidnap them and try to use them to experiment on.
News flash, it's Ethan!
Now Mason and Miguel find out about this, and they eventually do kill Ethan together because he literally tried to experiment on his own son.
Also, Ethan was a scientist and he was the one that made the infection that caused the zombie apocalypse.
Mason is heartbroken about this and tries to find out more on why after they kill him, but the lab gets set on fire by Sadie who was helping Ethan all along.
Brady did not know about any of the shit his dad did, but he is equally as heart broken.
So the other people ask the two boys why they were kidnapped and when they tell them everything they don't believe Mason and Miguel at first, but when they show them proof it changes everything.
Now they find out that there is a cure to all of this, to save everyone and make people immune to the infection, and it was something that Ethan had made but it's in a different lab in another state.
So Mason and Miguel travel to the state, kill a bunch of zombies and shit, and find the lab and get the cure.
But Sadie is there waiting for them, she tries to kill them by releasing a shit ton of zombies at them, they kill some but there is too many of them.
They do kill all of them with pipe bombs that Jack made them and Mason's crossbow and Miguel's gun, but in the process they get bit.
Now at the time when they were kidnapped by Ethan, Ethan did something and took away their immunity, so they're not immune anymore.
Mason and Miguel get bit but don't notice until they get back home with the cure.
When they do notice they decide to not use the cure on themselves, and kill each other before they turn.
It's all over the place and shit, but this would be super fucking cool.

The Permanent Rain Press Interview with Brady Hepner | The Black Phone
On YouTube . Talks about a deleted scene with Ethan Hawke . Go to (21:40)
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME.
@ SCOTT:
Stingy bastard gave us a boring-ass scene with Gwen and her dad when we could have had this??? And Full-Magic Grabber??
For those wondering, the guy in the video (is that Vance or what? I wasn’t sure without that mane of hair lol) says that Ethan had a deleted scene as The Grabber where he let out a blood-curdling scream that he said was incredibly chilling with how desperate he sounded??
SCOTT. SCOTT YOU MOTHERFUCKER.

The Human Trial (2022) Film Review
The Human Trial (2022) Film Review
Lisa Hepner and Guy Mossman’s The Human Trial is a documentary about a subject that perhaps you’ve heard tons about. In the hyperconnected world we live in, it’s easy to have access to factual information about health issues in the modern world. Information is accessible, which doesn’t mean you should get your facts from a TikToker awkwardly dancing to the tune of deadly stats. On the other side…
