Reviews of Christian Allegorical FANTASY
Note: Christianity is a broad, varied thing. I can only write from my perspective, and it’s hard to describe that perspective to an international audience. Words have different meanings in different countries. But this is what I think about the various Christian allegorical fiction I’ve read, measured by writing quality, allegorical quality, and ability to make me happy. Your perspective may vary.
Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis –
Writing: Y’all know this guy is good.
Allegory: Shockingly strong for something with such mass appeal. And deeper than you thought as a kid. Never sidelines the story, because he’s integrated the two so well.
Problems: So, you don’t notice the colonialism, racism, classism, sexism, and mild ableism as a kid. Dude was a white British man during the early and mid 1900s. He does not entirely rise above his culture. Some of the dehumanization of species/cultures that are obvious stand-ins for real world cultures horrified me during my latest reread. And it’s subtle enough that it’s hard to point out to kids.
Story: The story is great. I’ve read ‘The Horse And His Boy’ so many times that my papa’s copy is held together with tape. He wouldn’t let me take them when I moved out. Had to buy my own. It was tragic.
The Archives of Anthropos, by John White –
Writing: Reminds me of Terry Brooks, a little. In that the writing is servicable, and some of the fantasy is pretty derivative, but it’s definitely not bad. The roots are strong, but he didn’t have enough experience to cut all the weaker bits and ruthlessly rewrite.
Allegory: Solid. Not tacked on, not super deep. Really good for a Narnia imitation.
Problems: Not sure, haven’t reread in a while. Pika didn’t like a battle near the beginning, so we had to stop.
Story: It’s set in Winnipeg!!! Unashamed about being heavily inspired by Narnia, this series is a delight. Not as good as it’s inspiration, of course, but it feels like a heartfelt fan letter. Some of the ideas are REALLY cool. This series is worth reading, you guys! Especially the first 2 books.
The Circle (Black, Red, and White), by Ted Dekker –
Writing: Readable. Slick. Masculine.
Allegory: Lacked both the desired subtly and the necessary depth. Felt like it was written for fantasy fans that felt guilty about reading secular books, rather than to say something important.
Story: Don’t like Narnia-esque books aimed at adults. Allegories shouldn’t be trying to be cool. Not a fan. (But please note that these opinions were formed 15-20 years ago. I may have been missing something.)
The Space Trilogy, by C.S. Lewis –
Writing: Again, this is C.S. Lewis. He’s good at writing.
Allegory: A little weird, for me. But I struggle with allegory for adults. One of the books is Adam and Eve on Venus, with original sin working slightly differently? I don’t get it.
Problems: My problem is that I don’t like it! Sometimes it reads like Douglas Adams, but not funny. That makes no sense!
Story: Don’t like Narnia-esque books aimed at adults, even if they’re written by the authour of Narnia. This is Sci-Fi. There is romance. Really not for me.
The Story of the Other Wise Man, by Henry Van Dyke –
Writing: Good, if I remember correctly. Feels dated and classic, like it should be from Victorian times. (I just checked, it’s from 1895.)
Allegory: Like most morality from more than a century ago, it reads a bit weird. Just, life was a lot harsher then. Nice clear simple message, just taught from a mindset I don’t totally understand.
Story: As a kid, this one made me SAD! He loses everything and feels like a failure! Does have a good message, teaching is sound, good storytelling, but it wasn’t fun enough to make the lesson stick.
Left Behind, by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins -
Writing: I remember the writing being fine. They read like thrillers, which isn’t a bad thing. I’ve enjoyed some thrillers.
Allegory: Revelations is ALREADY an allegory. This is just an uninspired expansion.
Problems: Everything.
Story: I hate apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic stories. This series wasn’t written by someone who was bothered by the suffering of everyone who made ‘wrong’ choices, and that makes it hollow and awful. ‘We’re so good and smart and better than other people!’ NO. That is not Christianity.
A Wrinkle In Time, by Madeleine L’Engle –
I still don’t get how this series is Christian?? Really freaked me out as a kid. Had quite a few nightmares.
After a little research, it turns out that she has a very different understanding of Christianity then me. You’ll have to get a review from someone who can see from that perspective.
Duncton Wood, by William Horwood –
Writing: Extremely good. Heavy and beautiful. Kept me reading as I got more and more weirded out.
Allegory: Not a Christian allegory. And yet Christian enough, in a weird Anglican(??) way, to make it difficult to interpret as non-Christian. There’s a Jesus figure who gets martyred. There are schisms. It’s weird.
Problems: Almost certainly shouldn’t be on this list, yet I spent half an hour searching for it because I was so sure it was supposed to be on this list.
Story: Moles and their experiences with religion. There are similarities to Watership Down and Redwall, Narnia and Lord of the Rings. (The last mostly in language/writing style). If it wasn’t so close to Christian allegory as to be in the uncanny valley, I would have loved it! As it is, I would have prefered LESS Christ.
 Christian ALLEGORICAL Fantasy
The Pilgrim’s Progress, by Paul Bunyan –
Writing: (Note: I’ve only read versions rewritten for kids. At least one was heavily abridged.) This was written in 1678. That is a LONG time ago. The worldview is really different from ours. Also, the versions I read were not inspired updates.
Allegory: This was written only 100 years after the Protestant Reformation. Punishments are incredibly disproportionate. Rich people have completely different rules than the poor, and this is seen as Godly. It’s been over 20 years since I read this book, and I don’t remember much, but it’s a weird read if you’re expecting modern concepts of right and wrong.
Story: Fascinating! Did not enjoy. Might as an adult. Reading an allegory that you can’t relate to at all is a weird experience.
Hind’s Feet On High Places, by Hannah Hunnard -
Writing: (Note: I’ve only read the version rewritten for kids.) Writing is really good.
Allegory: Names that are just English words have always annoyed me. Other than that pet peeve, this is extremely good. Straight-forward enough to be read to a 7 year old, complex enough for me to reference when I’m trying to describe my experiences to my husband. Solid Christianity, with enough hard stuff to challenge you, while still managing to be fun.
Problems: We’ve got some nasty ableism baked into the setting (disability as metaphor for sin and bondage), and the images are painfully white.
Story: I love this book! This is a Pilgrim’s Progress that actually matches with Christianity as I understand it. If you’re looking for a fun fantasy with a good message, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for a distillation of Christianity, told as a story because that makes it more accessible – this is a good one.
The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri –
Haven’t read it.
Tales of the Kingdom, by David and Karen Mains -
Writing: The first collection of stories is really strong. The next 2 get weaker. Short stories read differently than novels, and the writing style works well for that format.
Allegory: TOO strong. Some of the stories still make me mad to think about, because the messages are HARD. (Also, names that are just English words still annoy me, no matter now much I love the series.)
Problems: Ableism – true selves don’t have disabilities and are always beautiful. Art is not 100% white, but all the most beautiful people seem to be. And I love lizards far too much to handle the dragon story.
Story: These stories mean a lot to me. They are very much not something a non-believer is going to enjoy. They tend to focus on the parts of Christianity that are hard, uncomfortable, and/or different from mainstream culture. They also stick with you for decades. Narnia is my favourite series on this list to read, but Tales of the Kingdom might be the best for exploring your faith. Highly, highly recommend.

Second Year of Uni!!
so i was tagged by @felix-studies for this meme and ur supposed to tag 5 other studyblrs but i literally do Not know that many studyblrs that HAVEN'T done the meme so let's go
Courses
my college has changed things up a bit due to current events, so some of my courses are online and some (the morning ones) are lectures 😔 i'm at the maximum number of credits allowed by my uni, and if i could take more classes (one-credit private music lessons) i would. as is i'm probably going to be putting in two or three additional hours a day just practicing for the one-credit class i DO have, but here we go
Bio Concepts w/ Lab (lecture, 8am lab, needed for prereqs)- 3 credits
Chromatic Music Theory (lecture, first class of the day EXCEPT on Thursday, love the prof)- 3 credits
Chromatic Music Theory Skills (online, coreq for theory, still probably gonna be in the music hall more often than not)- 1 credit
Elementary Latin (lecture, already have the textbook, mad hype)- 3 credits
Guitar Ensemble (lecture, kinda scared of the prof even though he's a chill dude bc i have a lot of room for improvement in guitar and it sucks to disappoint him)- 1 credit + practice time
Intermediate German I (online, prof is cool, does not require a textbook)- 3 credits
Soc & Anthropo Linguistics (online, love the prof)
because so many of the classes are online, hopefully i won't completely die during midterms and finals week like i did my first semester.
scheduling
my lecture classes are all early-ish in the morning, except for ensemble, which is in the evening. unfortunately my bio class is right after my theory & skills classes, so i cant just skulk in the music hall practice rooms last semester. hopefully i CAN snag a locker for my guitar so i dont have to drag it all over campus like That Guy (i was That Guy last semester). bc i'll be up earlier, i'll be able to do my online studies earlier in the day too, which is good. my music and german professors adjusted really well to the online curriculum, so i don't expect any problems on that front, but I Can Work With even professors that are allergic to the online platform my college uses. i'll be living on campus because Most of my classes Are lectures and my uni is a solid two hours away from home, and frankly NO 8am prerequisite lab is worth that.
Life Outside of Studies
i JUST got done with two online summer classes, so i have a solid MONTH to relax and recoup before the 18-credit fall grind. i've been healing really well from my top surgery, so my surgeon has cleared me for swimming and working out again 🥰
i'll be using my free time to read for pleasure, catch up on some TV shows (i watch at a GLACIAL pace), get back on the guitar-practicing wagon, and do some knitting and crochet.
speaking of crochet, i'd like to show off the wizard hat i made for funsies back in may! it's a pattern of my own design, and future versions will have wider brims (i ran out of yarn rip) but it holds its shape really well without felting or extra reinforcement!

Chapter 6:the parents & the kids
__________________
With the parents~
While the teachers are doing Their time, meanwhile In a cozy neighborhood, two unexpected couples woke up & do Their daily routine.
In a beautiful light indigo blue & purple house, there are two skeletons having Their breakfast, one was on a couch was a hybird dragon skeleton, sitting as he was just woke up from his peaceful slumber smelling a splendid scent woke him up.
Meanwhile another Skeleton, almost a cyber organic, was making a two cup of warm coffees as a last thing he done for the breakfast he made.
He heard a certain Skeleton woke up from Their slumber & he chuckles & says"glad you finally woke up,sleeping beauty~" he chirped up.
The said "sleeping beauty" made a irrated whine at the statement & said"shut it mecha,I just woke up*yawns* where the kids?" he asked.
The cyber organic skeleton known as mecha wraith says"already way to school, you look peaceful when you are sleeping while they get ready, seriously though you worry me,kin" he chuckles as he brings Their breakfast on the coffee table as the Skeleton known as kin muse, sits on the carpeted floor as mecha sits besides him.
Kin then said"I don't really thought sending our kids to Our old school was a good idea to begin with,I mean is fine is just...." mecha saw this & he knew what he was talking about,he softly sighs & says"kin,is ok they will be ok they can handle Themsleves,I know is hard of what happened to all of us back then but we are still here, having a normal life again..."
Kin then says"I know but still geo.....he....?!" he was stopped at his sentence by mecha hugging him,he blinks for a moment then hugged back, while mecha says" I know....is ok he can handle it" mecha pulled away & nuzzle his forehead, while kin's tail flicked softly at the action.
Mecha then says while smiling"c'mon let's eat,we got a day ahead of us!!! Sides we should See what the others up too for this pass few months! Honestly it's been awhile" he says as he starts munching on his buttered toast.
Kin softly grunted while trying to keep his flushed face down & he eats his waffles, thinking "maybe it's a good idea to see others,i haven't seen beats after the departure we had after we had the kids, maybe I should talk to him & see how is he doing" he thinks as he eats another waffle.
Meanwhile with the kids
A bunch of highschoolers are walking towards outside,as they talk about their daily lives.
The highschoolers are bunch of freshmans while some are either 2nd or 3rd year students.
One was a teal haired cyber organic named geo,he was a freshman year with his sister giya, while his Lil brother ampel was in his middle school year.
Another student, was following behind him was feral,he is the child of firefly & Brute, childhood friends with geo & his sister along with ardent or his real name chasm, chasm was another freshman & the child of abyss & ganz along with his Lil brother drift whole dash is with ampel & bezerk.
These four had been together since childhood because of Their parents being family friends.
Another bunch of students came this time they are the 2nd years, one was from the echo Academy named ari dreamzy, she was a 2nd year student & the school's perfect with her friends lux lumiscent & malachite Druzy, she was talking with two solitaire students named Cordelia & lynnsyl, the two are also 2nd year Students.

The four,Di,jester, lavender,& faith is another class, history with nightmare.
Lavender was not listening,Di is daydreaming, faith is wiring down what he said as he as jester.
Later the three chatted when nightmare left, jester is scribbling on one of his other notes, while waiting for the teacher to come back.
Meanwhile with the parents
When mecha & kin got out of the house & goes to the old place where they used to go back then, when they had gone through their first time knowing each other.
They got into a small cafe shop on the beach side named echo fragments, they got inside as they looking for a seat they heard a fimiliar voice called out.
"hey guys over here!" Both looked at the other side to the cafe & saw brute & firefly along with V & abyss & ganz there.
Both mecha & kin goes to Their table & mecha greeted"hey guys,it's been awhile! How are you all doing" he greeted happily as kin sat down besides brute while mecha sits besides with firefly.
V then spoke up & said"we're doing fine,we just got busy a lot now due to being a parent & having work took much of our time" firefly says"bummer,we could have time to try & get the stressed out of our system but it seems the time isn't the right place on the right time"he says as he stretches, abyss chuckles amusingly & says"true I suppose, with me taking over my parents work with ganz is hard to take breaks though" Ganz then hums in agreement.
Kin then looks around looking for someone,V saw this & said"hey don't worry he'll come Around our lives busy for a little while so he'll probably be busy" kin sighs as he leans back.
Brute just pats his shoulder & says"HeY, I know the feeling of wanting to see the person they care for, believe me I'm already silently praying for dezor to come too" he says.
Then all of sudden a soft yet deep voice called out"kin?" all seven flinches in suprised when they heard the voice, when they looked at the entrance, they we're schocked to see a taller ver.of beats standing there with dezor his side.
Mecha rubs his eyes sockets & says"beats? Is that you?" he says shockingly beats nods awkwardly, kin stood up & calmly walk up to him & says"you grew taller than me now"he says fondly & beats just straight up hugged him while dezor comes up to brute who hugged him as well.
Both dezor & beats got in Their respective sits, all of them starts talking about Their lives & what they do now.
In the Echo Academy
"you sure you'll be alright?"asked by a female anthropos marine being named endine towards a vampire squid named stellar.
Stellar then said"will be fine auntie, sides cliff will be Their as well as ava & his brother Novia"he says cheerfully.
Endine looked a bit doubtful but sighed & smiles, then said"alrighty! Just be good & don't do anything stupid or I'll pound you,got it!" she says firmly yet softly to stellar.
Stellar sighs & said "alright, whatever you said auntie",endine then said"I mean it"
Stellar laughs & says"alright, alright geez!" he says as he hugged endine who also hugged him back & says"well I'll be going now! Bye auntie!".
Endine waves him goodbye as he joins his friends, who he started a conversation with.
Stellar then says"hey guys what do you think we do around the start of the year of our first high school life?" he asked, cliff then answered"I don't know but I suppose we should it for ourselves then" he says as he adjust his messenger bag, while ava said" eh,I think we will be fine as long as we don't do too much damage in the school" he laughs nervously.
Facts:
Some of the last name came from Their creator's username.
Dezor lived with beats, who worked at the echo Academy now.
geo is connected to kin's & mecha's time together in highschool
There was a incident that happened in the school called the twilght acadamey where all the parents of the kids goes to back then.
Mecha is like a organic cyber, looking like a organic Grey colored skeleton but he is run by cyber/tech magic, that means he can still crashed & reboot like error.
kin got most evolve in a incident had happend around school
firefly & Brute had gotten together the same way as mecha & kin but differently, because firefly is Brute's personal therapist back in highschool.
stellar was my adopted oc,who I turn into a vampire squid.
Endine is genesistale undyne(my Au)
Cordelia, lynnsyl, ari are 2nd year Students with lux & malachite(my ship kid)
Lux & malachite are in a relationship like Michiru & haruka from sailor moon
Kin still act himself but when it comes to his kids,he shows immense worry for them especially geo since he was evolved in the incident beforehand,he also shows affection towards mecha when they are alone or with Their friends with no one watching(it's awkward)
Bezerk, dash,& ampel are middle school years & are in 8 gr.
Novia is 2nd year depsite his brother, ava is older,he had his first year while his brother was homes schooled.

4. which oc can cook? what’s their favorite thing to cook?
Okay Minye definitely knows how to cook man istg. Most people would assume she’d be bad at it cause she’s blind but it’s one of her favourite things to do. Her favourite thing to make is probably really complicated cake recipes, she finds people find it really impressive when she’s able to do those.
15. which oc has the most friends?
I imagine that Libitina is definitely the most popular, and a lot of people like her. I think a lot of people consider Libitina one of there friends, even if they’re closer to acquaintance‘s with her.
37. which oc has the best handwriting? the worst?

Lore Episode 3: The Beast Within (Transcript) - 6th April 2015

Ask anyone in the mental health profession about full moons and you’ll get a surprising answer. They’ll respond with something that sounds incredibly like folklore and myth. The full moon has the power to bring out the crazy in people. We’ve believed this for a long time. We refer to unstable people as “lunatics”, a word that is Latin. It’s built from the root word luna, which means “moon”. And for centuries, has operated under the conviction that changes in the luna cycle can cause people to lose touch with reality. Just ask the parents of a young child and they’ll tell you tales of wild behaviour and out-of-the-ordinary disobedience at certain times of the month. Science tells us that just as the moon’s pull on the ocean creates tides that rise and fall in severity, so too does our planet’s first satellite tug on the water inside our bodies, changing our behaviour. As modern people, when we talk about the full moon we tend to joke about this insane, extraordinary behaviour. But maybe we joke to avoid the deeper truth, an idea that we are both frightened and embarrassed that we even entertain. For most of us, you see, the full moon conjures up an image that is altogether unnatural and unbelievable. That large, glowing, perfect circle in the night sky makes us think of just one thing: werewolves. I’m Aaron Mahnke, and this is Lore.
Science has tried many times over the years to explain our obsession with the werewolf. One theory is a disease known as hypertrichosis, sometimes known as “wolfitis”. It’s a condition of excessive, unusual body hair growth, oftentimes covering the person’s entire face. Think Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf. Psychologists actually have an official diagnosis in the DSM IV handbook known as “clinical lycanthropy”. It’s defined as a delusional syndrome where the patient believes they can transform into an animal, but the changes only take place in their mind, of course. Delusions, though, have to start somewhere. Patients who believe that they are Napoleon Bonaparte have some previous knowledge of who he was. I think it’s fair to assume that those who suffer from clinical lycanthropy have heard of werewolves before. It’s actually pretty easy to bump into the myth, thanks to modern popular culture. Werewolves have been featured in, or at least appeared in, close to 100 films in Hollywood since 1913.
One of the earliest mentions of something even resembling the modern werewolf can actually be found in the 2000-year-old writings of the Roman poet Vergil. In his Eclogue 9, written about 40BCE, he described a man named Moeris, who could transform himself into a wolf using herbs and poisons. About 50 years later, Gaius Petronius wrote a satirical novel called, appropriately, Satyricon, which I think is basically the equivalent of Stephen King writing a horror novel called “Frighticon”. In it, he tells the tale of a man named Niceros. In the story, Niceros was travelling with a friend, and when that friend suddenly took off his clothes, urinated in a circle and transformed into a wolf right before his eyes, before running off toward a large field of sheep. The next day, Niceros was told by the sheep-owner that one of the shepherds stabbed a wolf in the neck with a pitch fork. Later that day, Niceros noticed that his friend, now returned to the house, had a similar wound on his neck.
In the Greek myth of the god Zeus and an Arcadian king named Lycaon, Zeus took on the form of a human traveller. At one point in his journey he visited Arcadia, and during his time in that country, he visited the royal court. The king of the land, Lycaon, somehow recognised Zeus for who he truly was and tried, in true Greek form, of course, to kill him by serving him a meal of human flesh. But Zeus was a smart guy, after all, and he caught Lycaon in the act, throwing the mythological equivalent of a temper tantrum. He destroyed the palace, killed all 50 of the king’s sons with lightning bolts, and then of course cursed King Lycaon himself. The punishment? Lycaon would be doomed to spend the rest of his life as a wolf, presumably because wolves were known for attacking and eating humans, and he tried to serve human flesh. Most scholars believe that this legend is what gives birth to the term lycanthropy: lukos being the Greek word for wolf, and anthropos, the word for man.
Werewolves aren’t just a Greco-Roman thing. In the 13th century, the Norse recorded their mythological origins in something called the Völsunga saga. Despite their culture being separated from the Greeks by thousands of miles and many centuries, there are in fact tales of werewolves present in their histories. One of the stories in the Völsunga saga involves a father and son pair: Sigmund and Sinfjotli. During their travels, the two men came across a hut in the woods where they found two enchanted wolf skins. These skins had the power to change the wearer into a wolf, giving them all the characteristics that the beast was known for: power, speed, and cunning. The catch, according to the saga, was that once put on, the wolf pelt could only be taken off every 10 days. Undeterred, the father son duo each put on one of the wolf skins, and transform into the beasts. They decided to split up and go hunting in their new forms, but they made an arrangement that if either of them encountered a party of men over the certain size of seven, then they were supposed to howl for the other to come join them in the hunt. Sigmund’s son, however, broke his promise, killing off a hunting party of 11 men. When Sigmund discovered this, he fatally injured his son. After the god Odin intervened and healed him, both men took off the pelts and burned them. You see, from the very beginning, werewolves were a supernatural thing, a curse, a change in the very nature of humanity. They were ruled by cycles of time and feared by those around them.
Things get interesting when we go to Germany. In 1582, the country of Germany was being pulled apart by a war between Catholics and Protestants, and one of the towns that played host to both sides was the small town of Bedburg. Keep in mind that there were also still outbreaks of the Black Death, so this was an age of conflict and violence. People understood loss – they had become numb to it, and it would take something incredibly extraordinary to surprise them. First, there were cattle mutilations: farmers from the area surrounding Bedburg would find dead cattle in their fields. It started of infrequent, but grew to become a daily occurrence, something that went on for weeks. Cows that had been sent out to pasture were found torn apart. It was as if a wild animal had attacked them. Naturally, the farmers assumed it was wolves, but it didn’t stop there. Children began to go missing. Young women vanished from the main roads around Bedburg. In some cases their bodies were never found, but those that were had been mauled by something horribly violent. Finding your cattle disembowelled is one thing, but when it’s your daughter or your wife, well, it can cause panic, and fear, and so the community spiralled into hysteria.
Now, we think of historical European paranoia and we often think of witchcraft. The 15th and 16th centuries were filled with witch hunts: burnings, hangings, and an overwhelming hysteria that even spread across the Atlantic to the British colonies, where it destroyed more lives. The Witch Trails of Salem, Massachusetts are the most famous of those examples, but at the same time, Europe was also on fire with fear of werewolves. Some historians think that in France alone, some 30,000 people were accused of being werewolves, and some (hundreds, they say) were even executed for it, either by hanging or being burnt at the stake. You see, the fear of werewolves was real, and for the town of Bedburg, it was very real.
One report from this event tells of two men and a woman, who were travelling just outside the city walls. They heard a voice call out to them for help from within the trees beside the road, and one of the men stepped into the trees to give assistance. When he didn’t return, the second man entered the woods to find him, and he also didn’t return. The woman caught on, attempted to run, but something exited the woods and attacked her. The bodies of the men were later found, mangled and torn apart, but the woman’s never was. Later, villagers found severed limbs in the fields near Bedburg, limbs from the people who were missing. It was clear that something horrible was hunting them.
Another report tells of a group of children playing in a field near the cattle. As they played, something ran into the field and grabbed a small girl by the neck before trying to tear her throat out. Thankfully the high collar on her dress actually saved her life, and she managed to scream. Now, cows don’t like screaming apparently, and they began to stampede. Frightened by the cattle, the attacker let go of the girl and ran for the forest, and this was the last straw for the people of Bedburg. They took the hunt to the beast.
According to a pamphlet from 1589, the men of the town hunted for the creature for days. Accompanied by dogs and armed for killing, these brave men ventured into the forest and, finally, found it. In the end, it was the dogs that cornered the beast. Dogs are fast and they beat the men to their prey. When the hunters finally did arrive, they found the creature cornered. According to the pamphlet, the wolf transformed into a man right before their eyes. While the wolf had been just another beast, the man was someone they recognised. It was a wealthy, well-respected farmer from town named Peter Stubbe, sometimes recorded as Stumpp. Stubbe confessed to it all, and his story seemed to confirm their darkest fears. He told them that he had made a pact with the devil at the age of 12. The deal? In exchange for his soul, the devil would give him a plethora of worldly pleasures, but like most stories, a greedy heart is difficult to satisfy. Stubbe admitted to being a, and I quote,  “wicked fiend, with the desire for wrong and destruction”, that he was “inclined to blood and cruelty”. Now, to sate that thirst, the devil had given him a magical belt of wolf skin. Putting it on, he claimed, would transform him into the monstrous shape of a wolf. Sound familiar?
He told the men that had captured him that he had taken off the belt in the forest, and some were sent back to retrieve it, but it was never found. Still, superstition and fear drove them to torture and interrogate the man, who confessed to decades of horrible, unspeakable crimes. Well-known around the town, Stubbe told his captors that he would often walk through Bedburg and wave to the families and friends of those he had killed. It delighted him, he said, that none of them suspected that he was the killer. Sometimes he would use these walks to pick out future victims, planning how he would get them outside the city walls, where he could, and I quote, “ravish and cruelly murder them”. Stubbe even admitted to going on killing sprees simply because he took pleasure in the bloodshed. He would kill lambs and goats and eat their raw flesh. He even claimed to have eaten unborn children, ripped straight from their mothers’ wombs.
The human mind is always solving problems, even when we’re asleep and unaware of it. The world is full of things that don’t always sit right with us, and in our attempt to deal with life we… rationalise. In more superstitious times it was easy to lean on old fears and legends. The Tuberculosis outbreaks of the 1800s led people to truly believe that the dead were sucking the life out of the living. The stories that gave birth to the vampire mythology also provided people with a way to process Tuberculosis and its horrible symptoms. Perhaps the story of the werewolf shows us that same phenomenon, but in reverse. Rather than creating stories to explain the mysteries of death, perhaps we created the story of the werewolf to help justify the horrors of life and human nature. The tale of Peter Stubbe sounds terrible, but when you hold it up to modern day serial killers, such as Jeffery Dahmer or Richard Trenton Chase, it’s par for the course. The difference between them and Stubbe is simply 400 years of modernisation. With the advent of electrical lights pushing away the darkness and global exploration exposing much of the world’s fears to be just myth, it’s become more and more difficult to blame our flaws on monsters. The beast, it turns out, has been inside us the whole time.
And Peter Stubbe? Well, the people of Bedburg executed him for his crimes. On October 31st, 1589, (Halloween, mind you) he was given what was thought to be a fair and just punishment. He was strapped, spread eagle and naked, to a large, wooden wheel, and then his skin was pealed off with red hot pinchers. They broke his arms and legs with the blunt end of an axe before finally turning the blade over, and chopping off his head. His body was burnt at the stake in front of the entire town, and then his torture wheel was mounted on a tall pole, topped with the statue of a wolf. On top of that, they placed his severed head. Justice, or just one more example of the cruelty of mankind? Perhaps in the end, we’re all really monsters, aren’t we?
Lore was produced by me, Aaron Mahnke. You can find a transcript of the show, as well as links to source material, at lorepodcast.com. Just read that essay you reblogged and, Christ is Sophia's Aeon partner? I never realized that I didn't know who her partner was because she just did everything herself. As the wise and beloved Witch of Gnosticism, could you confirm?
to be fair, its because Sophia doing everything by herself is the cause of all the problems lol so it gets the most notoriety. She was supposed to do everything/creation with her partner/paired concept, just like all Aeons are supposed to, so she has a partner in all gnostic myths, but the problem is she just never uses him lol
anyway, to answer your question, yes and no, kinda but not really
because Sophia’s Partner Aeon is often called Theletos or Christos, but oftentimes is paired with other aeons called Nous or Anthropos
Theletos/Christos/Anthropos are meant to represent the idea of “mankind” like how Sophia represents the idea of “church/wisdom” and their union in cosmology was meant to be like a parable about how Mankind and the Church should be “married” together and produce things together and etc
like, basically think of all natural Aeon pairs as Married Hetero couples, things meant to be in “male”/”female” unions who produce things together
what complicates things though is that Christ as in Jesus Christ the actual human person was considered a different Aeon who’s natural partner was the Aeon called “the Holy Spirit” and these guys were like, the lowest of the rungs of Aeons
and basically the reason everything is complicated is because different Gnostic practices considered Different Aeons married to eachother or lower or higher up in the Hierarchy, especially Sophiua’s partner, he’s constantly changing
and because people like to equate Sophia/Church/Holy Spirit and Nous/Logos/Anthropos/Mankind/The Word/Jesus Christ into these hodgepodges of symbolisms, even when they really should be and are kinda seperate concepts
and also because people see the word “Christos” and immediatealy assume they mean Jesus Christ, not some other dude who happens to share his last name who isnt even really a dude hes and aeon and even though he represents the Idea of Mankind, he’s not exactly human shaped
Jesus Christ the person is always explicitly a human man born of a human woman (and god)
Aeons are not humans and have nothing to do with humans and existed before Humans were ever a thing
but also sometimes Jesus Christ the man IS also an Aeon, just not the Aeon that Sophia’s partner is
its, complicated and inconsistent lol

Day 19 - Entrada
We’re already at day 19 fulfilling this Fringe September’s vagenda.
WHAT AN EPISODE.
Entrada serves as the closing episode of S3′s beginning arc of the two Olivia’s trading places and universes. Up until this point, every episode takes place in one universe or the other in almost in its entirety, but this one splits the action, masterfully switching between the two throughout the entire episode.
The two Olivias are both running out of time. Our Olivia is trying to escape and get back, after Walternate and co. discover that she knows what the fuck is going on (and also outliving her usefulness), while Altlivia’s cover has also been blown, thanks to a message Olivia manages to relay to Peter during her brief universe-jump in the previous episode.
But there’s also a contrast between the two. Altlivia is on the run, but she also got a list of contacts, exit strategies that she can peruse. She does get caught by the end, but even that’s a brief moment - her previously implanted trackers activate while she’s still in the transport van.
Meanwhile Olivia starts off the episode already imprisoned, with doctors doing a last batch of experiments on her, trying to learn everything they can about Cortexiphan and her universe hopping powers. But once that secret has been cracked, and Walternate learns that Cortexiphan only works when given to children, she’s no use to them anymore, and is pretty much scheduled to die. She doesn’t really have anyone on her side here, so she needs to CONVINCE Alt!Broyles herself to do the right thing in order to escape.
Her impassioned speech about how both universes can survive finally pushes him to consider. Olivia already saved his son, while she was being in full Olivia mode instead of Faux!Altlivia mindspace, and he clearly has trouble justifying what their side is about to do to her. But helping her is still a risk, it means going against the interest of his own universe and putting his trust into Olivia, trusting her to do and be able to do what’s right for all of them, regardless of universe.
We even see Alt!Broyles discuss his dilemma with his wife on vague terms, and perhaps it’s her faith in him to do the right thing that pushes him to put his own faith into Olivia. And he gets murdered and dissected for his trouble.
RIP ALT!BROYLES.
What I find interesting though, is that it seems like Walternate doesn’t actually want to kill Olivia at first, merely send her over so the two Olivias would naturally swap out. It’s fucking Brandon who suggests that they could study her brain further, and just replace the mass with something else for the exchange. Fuck you Fayette.
I guess it serves as an example for us that Walternate isn’t pure evil, merely pragmatic about shit, but I still couldn’t help but ask... If at any point the plan was to send Olivia back in one piece after learning everything they can, why did they go down the whole convincing her that she’s Altlivia route? You literally made her a walking-talking security risk that now knows all the inner workings of your division?? Because you put those memories in her head??? Like... I get that they wanted to find a way for Olivia to co-operate in finding out the secret to cross over, but man, if you didn’t necessarily want to kill her, then maybe you should’ve thought this through more??
But since Olivia escapes with the help of Alt!Broyles, it’s him that gets chopped off to the required mass to complete the equation. YIKES.
Meanwhile on our side everyone is trying to deal with Altlivia’s betrayal. Walter’s stress eating, Peter is pissed af, and none of them know how to save their Olivia. Good thing that Olivia knows how to get help to save herself.
At the end Altlivia walks into her old office like nothing happened, and Peter’s holding Olivia’s hand like nothing happened... Except Alt!Broyles is missing, and Olivia still got a shit ton of bombs that’s waiting to be dropped on her after all this.
It truly is the perfect closure to one of the most intense chapters in the show’s history.
Other things:
SHE TRICKED MY SON WITH HER CARNAL MANIPULATIONS AND HE FELL RIGHT INTO HER VAGENDA.
Peter uses 'na einai kalytero anthropo apo ton patera tou’ to suss out Altlivia.
They also use the location of the bakery she bought Walter’s food at to find her. Pastry was her downfall.
Peter finds photos of the two of them in Altlivia’s purse after apprehending her. It’s also important to note that those photos were previously in Altlivia’s drawer when Peter searched her stuff at the beginning of the episode, so we and Peter know at this point that she cared enough about him to pick those in a hurry after being discovered.
The typewriter guy actually gets the other side’s promise fulfilled about his leg, once again proving their pragmatism.
This also means though that the other side manages to get their hands on the part of the device they essentially sent Altlivia over for.

The Aeons
The Aeons’ “family tree” as it where differs from different Gnostic traditions, from Valentinus to Sethians to Tertullian's. Below is Tertullian’s list which I would probably ascribe to most.
Important to note; this is not to be confused as a Pantheon as such. Unlike the characters of Greek and Norse and other mythologies, they are not individual personalities with their own goals, friendships and rivalries etc. I liken them more to the 99 names of Allah in Islam - to a certain degree, at least. They are described in most texts as facets of one God being generated throughout the beginning of the cosmos, all of Them acting in accordance to the will of The One. Well...almost all of them, but we get to Her at the end, saving the best for last as it were.
First generation
Bythos (the One, All Mother-Father) and Sige (Silence, Charis, Ennoea, etc.)
Second generation
Nous (Nus, Mind) and Aletheia (Veritas, Truth)
Third generation, emanated from Nous and Aletheia
Sermo (the Word) and Vita (the Life)
Fourth generation, emanated from Sermo and Vita
Anthropos (Enlightened) and Ecclesia (Community)
Fifth generation
Emanated from Sermo and Vita:
Bythios (Profound) and Mixis (Mixture)
Ageratos (Eternal) and Henosis (Union)
Autophyes (Essential nature) and Hedone (Pleasure)
Acinetos (Immovable) and Syncrasis (Commixture)
Monogenes (Only-begotten) and Macaria (Happiness)
Emanated from Anthropos and Ecclesia
Paracletus (Comforter) and Pistis (Faith)
Patricas (Paternal) and Elpis (Hope)

-
In all versions of the Aeonic Tree, as it were, Sophia is the last. This apparently was not intended as she was supposed to join with her consort, Theletus, and generate further Aeons like her ancestors. But Sophia, much akin to the story of Lilith, refused, and wished to become one with the Bythos (the Mother-Father) again. How She attempts to do so, either by following a false image of the Mother-Father into the darkness, or by attempting to imitate Them by creating by Herself out of ignorance, varies from text to text. What eventually happens is the creation of the Demiurge and His archons who represent those facets that separate us from knowing God, whereas connecting with the Aeons helps us to achieve gnosis and go back to the Pleroma where They reside.
It just interests me that Sophia is the only Aeon to take on a personal, active role and decide to ‘shake things up’. It appears that, by defying her instruction to generate with her consort, She is defying the will of God. Except She IS still part of God. All this takes place within the Pleroma and so this is before any separation, before any wall is created between the material world and the heavenly world. Her actions result in a ‘fall from grace’, much like Pandora opening the box, but She can never be condemned, for She was allowed to act through God’s will to know Themself. This contrasts with Eve apparently defying her god’s will when eating from the tree of knowledge and thus bringing some curse upon humanity. Sophia’s actions create an ‘imperfect’ world and lifeforms that could have been left to their own suffering, had Sophia not decided to sacrifice Her aeonic form and descend into this world to bless it with Her presence and forever link us to the Pleroma.
Few Gnostics really discuss the Aeons in comparison to the Archons, who I guess just sound cooler and “villains” are typically more intriguing than ‘the good guys’, but I think I will try to start meditating on them more into my faith, perhaps going through each name on my Rosary from time to time, if I can try to memorise them.

SEKILAS MENGENAI ILMU SOSIAL
