he squints his left eye, its vision having started failing before they abandoned ships. he gives mutt a small, worn twitch of a smile and nods to agree, as though he’s being asked to perform the duty at which he’s always been best; as though talking is a parlor trick of which he’s grown weary.

‘ do you know, ’ he starts. he stops promptly to clear his throat, some part of him believing it may make him sound less diminished. ‘ when i was appointed captain of clio in 1843, she’d been lost. ’ he puffs a breath and flutters his hand, indicating it had meant little to the admiralty, and that he by extension was expendable. ‘ my first task in command was to find the damn thing. i cannot estimate how many men i asked to trade the commission. ’

mutt's teeth are chattering so fast, he swears they'll chip and grind themselves into dust. his knees are squeezed up to his chest, his shoulders hunched tightly inward. in some pathetic way to stay warm, the remaining men have forgone shaving, something he, for obvious reasons, isn't able to do.

                    the  hand  finds  its  way  to  mutt’s  face  without  a  second  thought,    the  motion  so  at  home  with  protective  instincts  that  anger  takes  a  step  down .    priorities,    he  tries  to  reason  with  himself  as  below  his  breath  encouragement  &  comfort  is  whispered  to  the  hurt  child .    already  sullied  fabric  proves  to  be  futile  at  wiping  away  at  the  boy’s  cheeks,    mouth   >>   gingerly  tapping  the  skin  beneath  his  nose .    it’s  all  fixable,    even  in  their  current  situation .    

                    but  now,    convinced  that  nothing  is  broken,    aware  of  mutt’s  state  of  health,    rage  starts  to  bubble  again .

@guttersniper sent: there's a blink. dry. uncomprehending. he did not catch that reference. mutt is mortally pop culturally challenged. he doesn't say a word, his head ticking a quarter-inch to the left.

jay is a pro at backtracking on a reference. not only does he not mind doing it, he’s come to enjoy explaining his deeper cuts, especially to an audience that’s completely blind and more likely to share his enthusiasm. he loves the things he loves like they’re forever brand new.

he stops hard, laughs at himself for assuming—which he’d do in the same way no matter if it were star wars or transylvania 6-5000—and starts again without judgment.

         ‘ oh, it’s, uh... you made me think of eating raoul, actually. ’ he makes a fist around nothing and swings his arm animatronic-like, only up and down in a limited space. ‘ i thought you were gonna kill me with that frying pan. ’

Modern Masters 2017 Draft Archetypes: My Speculations

Modern Masters 2017 previews begin Monday, so before they do, I wanted to get my speculations for the draft archetypes out there. MM3 will include Modern-legal cards up through Magic 2014 Core Set, including the original Innistrad block and Return to Ravnica block, so my guesses for possible reprints will be confined to those sets. Here’s what I’ve got so far.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

he hates when people tell him that. people talking about him when he isn’t there means he can’t defend himself if something incorrect is said. means he matters. he’s heard it a few times these past few years. guesses that’s what one has to deal with when they’re known. a part of him wants to ask picard what was said about him, but decides against it. 

“ him’n keiko hold you in … high regard, too. “ the mirroring of words is done on purpose. mutt has a habit of copying accents, body language, and phrases to better fit in. a survival instinct that remains, as many often do. old habits are hard to break. 

                ——     distance  and  distrust  are  healthy  traits  to  have,    especially  being  as  alone  as  picard  is  led  to  believe  mutt  is,    but  the  boy’s  body  language  tells  a  much  darker  tale .    concealed  demons  hiding  in  shadows,    whispering  of  a  deep  pain .    over  the  years,    mission  after  mission,    a  doctor  sees  enough  hurt  and  grief,    sees  enough  scared  children  to  last  several  lifetimes,    but  sometimes,    every  once  in  a  while,    someone  has  it  just  a  little  bit  worse .

                          ❛      i    know,      but    i    am    glad    to    hear    they    still    think    so .      ❜      and  while  he  knows  mutt  won’t  open  up  just  because  picard  is  a  starfleet  doctor,    just  because  he  is  a  friend  of  the  o’brien’s,    lips  curl  into  a  gentle  smile .        ❛      i    know    this    is    probably    very    new,      being    on    a    starship    instead    of    deep    space    nine,      but,      i’m    sure    you’ll    adjust    quickly   .      ❜

so that’s the picard he’s heard so much about. his words are met with little more than an idle shrug of shoulder’s bony outcropping. “ fine. “ the answer comes out brusque, curt. pleasantries have never been his strong suit, nor mindless chatter. 

                 ——     fond  letters  paint  a  picture  but  as  stories  turn  flesh,    he  is  faced  with  the  reality  of  being  just  another  stranger  to  the  boy .    and  strangers  don’t  get  pleasantries .    good .      it  allows  distance,    asks  for  a  trust  that  needs  to  organically  grow  and  not  just  be  given  because  of  rank  and  status .      ❛      i’ve    heard    quite    a    bit    about    you,      young    man .      it    seems    mister    o’brien    holds    you    in    high    regards .      ❜
