I loved this movie.

Plot:

Rose Byrne and Marky Mark are married, of a certain age, childless and with a successful business in flipping houses.  They haven't really had the whole "let's have a baby discussion", but they decide they'd be interested in adopting a kid, so they go through the whole "let's adopt a kid" process and end up with three siblings who give them hell.

So I watched Ideal Home last year and this felt similar to that, in a way – the kids are difficult at first but they learn to love them, they fall into a routine, they grow protective of them, and then the biological parent comes back in and wants to take the kid away again, but it all turns out okay in the end.

And that's pretty much the plot of the movie but it's done so well that I didn't mind that it was a bit of a re-tread.  Marky Mark and Rose Byrne had great chemistry, it had comedic elements and a fantastic supporting cast, and the kids were great as well.

And it did that thing where it made me cry like the little bitch I am all the way through it, so you know if a movie has made me cry, I've been properly invested in it.

I loved it.

Well, this film totally got more hype than anyone could have guessed. I really think it is impressive for a comedy by the director of both Daddy's Home movies to get this much attention during awards season.

Whether or not it deserves all the attention I’m still not sure. On one hand this is a sweet and genuinely touching family drama that handles series issues in relatable ways and manages to shed light on a topic that a lot of people don’t know much about while appearing to have been a largely positive contribution to the conversation.

On the other hand it is still an awkward and poorly directed comedy that fits perfectly with the below-par work Sean Anders and Mark Wahlberg have become associated with.

I think that the touching family drama aspect shines through more clearly in this case, this certainly isn't as awkward or annoying as I first presumed it to be.

 Rose Byrne actually offers a pretty funny performance in places and Margot Martindale absolutely kills her comedic timing but for every good joke or well placed one-liner another lands way too on the noes or just completely flat. 

At one point the film bites off slightly more than it can chew and takes a leap into the absurd while attempting to address a very series issue but given the overall subject matter and the message of the film being that adoption is not as easy as many people believe it to be (or as many other films have made it out to be) I have to commended the film for attempting to dive in to the gritty details.

Overall it’s a real mixed bag but I have to give a mild recommendation for this one.

Pete and Ellie are a happy married couple who flip houses and are enjoying married and career bliss. When discussing children one day with Ellie’s sister, they decided to Foster a kid to change up their “stagnation”. They got more they bargained for when the couple decide to foster siblings(2 girls and a boy). Troubles and love ensues as we watch this new family navigate the ups and downs of foster care.

This movie was not one that I thought I would be into. Granted the subject matter(foster care) doesn’t necessarily seem to be something most people want to watch, from what I can tell. At first sight this movie seems like it would be less of a comedy and more morose. But it had some great laughs and very heart warming moments. 2.7👍🏻 out of 5. The story itself was very predictable and easy to digest. We had all the regular comic tropes here with the bitter sister. The whacky and funny grandma’s and the good cop/bad cop parents.

As usual Both Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg did an exceptional job as the parents. I love when Byrne does goofy comedy like bridesmaids(2011) or spy(2015) but she’s such a great all around actress that playing this “wishes she didn’t” mother was no difficult task for her. Wahlberg was great and looks pretty damn amazing😉. But was very convincing as the father. The kids in this movie although not being in much before this film did an excellent job. Special shout out to Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro, they both ate every scene they were in, playing off each other so smoothly.

Everything else felt great in the production value sense.

The movie did feel a little overdrawn at some points and there where a couple of stereo types thrown in. But, I do feel like they were doing the rite thing by showing that not all kids particularly teenagers get adopted.

Over all the movie was very sweet and a good watch for the family or alone if you have a couple hours to kill. Nothing about this movie has me wanting to run out to theaters but this is a definite stream.
