Meme by Twitter user ssmt_turb (find this and other templates here)
I don't know why but this year feels so much more yaoi than other years, even though 90% of the things I've drawn for the past few years has been m/m art. Is it because I made art and merch for rare ships from an obscure early 00s OVA? Or maybe because I'm smitten with a canon couple for a change and I'm still drawing art of them months after I finished the BL VN they're from?
#if you try to tell me bluesub isn't obscure tell me how many of your moots know what a bluesub is#also I don't think a ship being canon makes it more yaoi#au contraire#but it's incredibly weird for me to be into a couple that actually sucked each other's ****s on-screen#after all Im bout that “read between the lines and delusionally make your own meal because no one else will cook the flavors you like” life#art summary 2023#guro#meme filling

to help with some bills, commissions are open again! please read the info under the cut ✨
this will not be first come first serve, i'll be working on each commission as best as i can throughout the month. no commission should take longer than a month to complete, but i do ask for patience as i also have to balance daily life with art.
❔if you're interested, DM me with details of your request and as many ref sheets as possible. i typically draw up a rough sketch of your request and send it to you for approval. if the comm looks good, then i will send you an invoice with the full price and proceed to finishing up the comm. if you want to add an additional character it will be $15 added to your total. i ONLY use PayPal!
✅ i can draw furries/anthro, humans, fankids and OC's, ships and pairings. if you're unsure about an OC or character, just ask me!
❌i WILL NOT draw anything fetishy or explicit, hate art, gore/guro, mecha or highly detailed robotic characters. again, if you're unsure about your request, just ask me.
⚠️ i reserve the right to draw and post personal art in-between commissions. if you're curious about the progress of your comm you can always ask me, but just because i post personal art while working on comms does not mean i'm ignoring or avoiding working on your comm. pestering me about this will result in a refund and cancellation of the comm. i can and WILL also refuse a comm request if i am uncomfortable with a ship/pairing or if a rule above is broken.
if you're curious about something that isn't listed here, ask away! thank you! 💕

There's a relatively well-known place that archives art that has recently changed its stance on lolisho. If they said "for legal reasons where we're hosted" that would be disappointing but fine. Instead their rules said "it should go without saying that it isn't allowed"
Why? You used to allow it. Your motto makes a point that it's censorship to make value judgements about what should be archived and thus you are maximally inclusive. You allow bigoted art and guro art and real-person-guro-bigoted art. But this is where you draw the line?
I just feel betrayed because their motto and decent tagging system (where extreme/offensive content is hidden by default) made me trust that they wouldn't pull this kind of thing. It makes me more pessimistic about the possibility AO3 one day getting infiltrated by antis.

J-Fashion Terms for Beginners 3: Electric Boogaloo
Angura Kei: A Visual Kei substyle inspired by traditional Japanese underground theater performances (Angura = Underground), but it is occasionally associated with Ero-Guro Visual Kei bands. People who wear Angura typically wear traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos, military uniforms, and school uniforms (seifukus and gakurans usually) but with a gothic twist or references to the supernatural (such as those triangle handkerchiefs worn by ghosts in Japanese folklore). It isn't uncommon to see them wear shironuri makeup as that was worn by Angura actors during the 1960s and 1970s. From what I've seen, Angura isn't typically a style one wears day to day due to its over the top and elaborate nature. Some known Angura Kei bands are: MUCC, cali≠gari (though they are more known for Ero-Guro), Zombie Lolita and Inugami Circus-dan.
A truly theatrical blast from the past...
Erokawa: Translates as "erotic cute", this aesthetic and style is also known as Erokakkoi (translates as "erotic cool"). Erokawa contrasts most kawaii trends by incorporating the concepts of sexiness seen in the West. While it is mostly a "visual art" type of kawaii style, I have seen outfits that do match this style; they tend to be mainly pastel clothes styled after lingerie, actual lingerie, clothes that share elements with Agejo Gyaru, shirts with sexy kawaii girls on them, or just your typical "tight sexy outfit with references to kawaii culture or ecchi on it. For accessories you'll see chokers, leg garters, handcuffs, harnesses and occasionally cat ears. The idea of cuteness is associated with neoteny, fragility, innocence and youthfulness; the idea of sexiness is associated with adulthood, experience, excitement and maturity. Sexiness can technically be seen as what cuteness is meant to evolve into once we all turn from children to adults. But Japan is famous for loving everything that can be considered "cute" and not approving of "non-cute" things unless they are made "cuter" for mainstream media, and yes...this partially includes sexuality that is natural for adult women to have. Enter famous Japanese Idol, Kumi Koda. Unlike most idols who's contractual purity is stricter than a Disney Channel star's, Kumi broke the mold by taking erotic elements in her artistic style and showing how they too can be seen as valid and acceptable. In contrast to other "sexy" kawaii trends, Erokawa was created with feminism and for women to take ownership of their sexuality.
Let's get sexy~...and adorable!
Ero-Guro Kei: If one thinks of Visual Kei they are most likely thinking of one of these subgenres and styles; Kote Kei (means "old school kei", this is basically how Visual Kei bands dressed in the 90s), Tanbi Kei (means "aeshetic school", this style is inspired by classic European fashion), or Ero-Guro Kei, the style we're discussing here. In case the name didn't give it away already, Ero-Guro Kei basically means "erotic" and "grotesque". As described by the website TV Tropes, this style is meant to be an Interplay of Sex and Violence. Most Ero-Guro Kei bandmembers tend to wear clothes similar to Kote Kei, but with more exposed skin (i.e. not wearing a shirt or wearing a low-cut one) and tons of S&M/bondage or fetish elements like chokers, corsets, harnesses, leather and lace or mesh worn together and masquerade masks. Despite this, for most people the "Ero-Guro" part in Ero-Guro Kei usually comes from the vulgar and raunchy lyrics in their songs coupled with horrifying music videos. Some famous Ero-Guro Kei bands include but are not limited to: cali≠gari, Dir En Grey (during their earlier albums), Kagerou and ANTI-KRANKE.
Choke me like you hate me but you love me...

i was having Election Sickness so after putting it off for like 10 years i finally agreed to rewatch escaflowne with anka because they've never seen it.
to contextualise this, i feel like i have to write a timeline of escaflowne in my life because i was orbsessed with the film and to a lesser degree the series— all interest orbited folken. i dyed my hair blue and painted his little teardrop on my face in 7th/8th grade until my mom got me a ... i don't know what it was. some kind of temporary tattoo... paint? i had to scrub it off with alcohol pads each day. yeah. first kintype. i saved up $300 in high school (2006/2007) by selling off entire sketchbooks to buy a cosplay of him that i've never worn because the maker referenced colours from one of the prominent scans online, which skew far warmer than the blue in the film. HUGE L.
following escaflowne, i made a dramatic 200pg comic when i was 12-13 about guys with wings living on a floating fortress, and brother drama. but the series never held my attention in the same way. i have theories...
full disclosure i'm 100 years old, and i've seen the series many times... i own the special box sets of the bandai version of the show & film. the show had a grip on me for years, but i'm pretty sure that even at the time i couldn't tell you why. many things about it rubbed me the wrong way— i was clearly drawn to it, and reacting strongly to something about it, but at the time i wasn't love with it.
i always prefered the film for its gorgeous, stunning actually, handling of colour and light. like there is such a lusciousness to it. it is an unbelievably beautiful work of art and i recommend watching it even just as something to look at, like, everyone's skills are on full display. i also really genuinely adore adaptations— as a concept, especially if in as direct conversation with the source as this film is.
when i got into escaflowne as a kid, it was at the exact time i was also watching/reading Berserk, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Boogiepop Phantom, the Animatrix... Memories and Paranoia Agent would follow soon after. and i was enjoying the emotional realism of those series, paired with more naturalistic art.
but escaflowne's incongruous packaging fooled me. it is exactly as brutal and emotional as those other series, but you have to peer through the shojo veneer and see that the shojo tropes are actually threads being followed to their often uncomfortable conclusions— they're being given gravity, rather than being left at a surface level of importance. it isn't cliche, it's examining cliche, and setting a new standard in doing so. on rewatch it's really interesting to see that sincerity in something that could easily be written off as a "shojo love triangle." instead, these so-called tropes coexist with the gruesome, dark, despairing, uncomfortable. and it's completely different from the type of "shojo/moe but GRIMDARK... moe but GURO, are you TRIGGERED? i'm SUBVERTING the GENRE"
escaflowne isn't doing Cute But Edgy. it's neither cute nor edgy. it's edgy if Berserk is edgy, and i don't consider Berserk edgy at all— to me it doesn't intend to provoke from that immature place. it's earnest, and difficult, and really sad. and as i rewatch escaflowne, i'm impressed by what lies beneath. there's so much i missed when i saw it as a kid. and stuff i missed even in the last time i watched it as an adult. but i can also see very clearly what i didn't miss, and what kept it in rotation, remembering scenes and songs for the rest of my life, and citing the pacing in my approach to comics.
escaflowne has really interesting cinematic qualities that i associate with live action. i'm wholly convinced by long shots that likely, partially, exist for economical reasons— but they make sense in the flow of the narrative, and they're framed such that you can rasily imagine, without even trying, how it would 100% work shot for shot with actors and sets. i do not want this, of course. i'm just saying they set it up with filmic sensibility.
really smart strange pacing, mood shifts, and a level of uncompromising brutality more associated with shonen, a level of heartwrenching that only the right combo of hope and hopeless can evoke, and emotional discomfort with a maturity— an observed perspective— that i associate with something like chainsaw man.
it's just weird with the art. i understand why it's paired that way: it's intentional trickery. i just wish the style was a bit more like nobuteru yuki's other (contemporary) work. like the layouts and moods add to such a lifelike quality... the film maintains so much more realism in its figures and approach, BUT, watching the film, you do get the unequivocal impression this is what it was always supposed to be. even just citing simple examples, the background/environment paintings and atmospheric colour are as tasteful, the heaving, slow weight of the mecha was always intentional... so much of what's there already appears. but you really have to forgive the oddness of the faces to see it! which is frustrating!
so. everyone i think agrees, even without ever seeing it, that the escaflowne OST is on beast mode. it is undeniably hardcore. but in watching it, the series rewards you by doing something i don't immediately associate with most anime— creating an unsettling mood by, for example, pairing hopeful music with distressing scenes, and vice-versa. escaflowne does a Lot of showing rather than telling, using cues like this to create an atmosphere of discomfort and wonder. i've said it 100 times, but one of my favourite moments in FILM (like all of film, lol) is when/where "i can't stop loving you" plays in rintaro's Metropolis. which is almost actually literally the same as Araki titling the last chapter of Stone Ocean "what a wonderful world." this type of editing and combination of themes is heartbreaking to me, and i think escaflowne succeeds at this, interweaving it throughout the series.
the tv anime also spares time and attention for strangely lifelike movements, which are mostly absent in the film because everything in the film is allowed such lushness and fluidity that these small, subtle, characterising movements and emotionally affecting timing/cuts that elevate a 20-min episode aren't the same type of crucial in a more broad, epic presentation. however, the 20-min episodes of escaflowne— as the series progreses, like specifically in the back half— FEEL like epics on their own. so much gets packed into each but the timing, how information is dispersed, is like... insane. i can't describe it. because if i were to say it feels longer, that'd almost imply it were dragging— which is rarely the case. it is a VERY tight show where everything is relevant yet there's no pre-existing lore with which to be weighed down; everything happens in real time, cause and effect, showing, not telling.
i don't watch a lot of (mainly post-00s) anime because— and this is a critique of Myself more than anything— i struggle to focus on stuff that's more... if not more stylistically cartooned, then more emotionally cartoonish. like there's a withholding of emotion, or an exaggeration of it. obviously i love the 1993-1994 JJBA OVA (favourite film of all time) for many of the same reasons— taking something "silly" and earnestly creating an experience from it: "okay, if that's true, how would it feel?"
but i straight up can't watch the JJBA tv series because in trying to follow the manga to a T/be "for the fans", it's a cheap, ugly, atmospherically empty, soulless reproduction with groverhaus layouts. it sucks to look at. it really fucking sucks. there is no direction. it's vacuous. but the OVA is gorgeous not because it's simply hand-drawn animation, but because it's directed with cinematic intention. colour, light, focus and intensity of emotion... the DIO fight in the OVA is stunning and scary and full of unbelievably clever animation. but i have a whole website in progress about this :^)
in escaflowne, in spite of the stylisation, i 100% buy the approximation. i don't judge Good Cartooning by an ability to stylise life naturalistically! i'm just always pleasantly surprised by when/where that Is achieved with abstraction.
escaflowne is somehow a very complicated optical illusion, a Magic Eye. anka compared it to ballet lol, like in swan lake where if you look long enough you see the animal movements being mimicked with profound efficacy, but if you're multitasking, if you look away, that immersion easily shatters. there are just some crazy little shifts in facial expression, like when teeth are gritted while talking, when eyes glance around the room or become just slightly glassy, when the honorifics shift, timing of reaction, sparing seconds for interstitial characterisation, paired with tone, paired with music, paired with colour, that make this special in a way i didn't know How to understand as a kid. the visual language i had any fluency in didn't cover escaflowne. i needed to spend more time with it. but something clearly gripped me from the jump because i was Not the same after hahaha
i thought i was supposed to be invested in the love triangle/hexagon/whatever, but that was a total diversion from what actually transpires, what is actually being given weight here. it is very scary and very sad lol!
even stuff like making adult man allen increasingly suck shit as he goes on, letting him be disappointing, because of course he would be— but making hitomi and van's interactions very natural and easy in a way they don't register as important because they're so accustomed to chasing the unattainable. lol. so fucking cool dude
back to folken. goated. wife of all time. ultimate. my first n'doul. one of my favourite ever Types of Guy is "ultra depressed fuckup who in his quest to do good misses the forest for the trees and consequently eats shit; serves cunt entire time" LIKE LITERALLYYYYYY and they need to have PATHOS... I LOVE A SWAGGY MARTYR.
wow long post. anyway i'm smacking my forehead. i was right. i've always been right about everything in my whole life. he's called folken because he done folked my dumb ass UP

Nuance is something that can be soooo hard for online spaces to hold onto. Hell, offline spaces too, for that matter. Today I'm thinking about kink and the concept of kinkshaming, when I think about nuance: that people should be allowed to enjoy and engage with kink, especially in fictional and fandom spaces where even bad kink etiquette can't actually harm anyone should be a given. Personally, as long as someone is tagging correctly and creating with self awareness, anything goes in a fictional space, you do you, your content deserves to exist online. I have personally created a variety of kinky works, both publicly available and not, and would really not have a leg to stand on trying to declare otherwise. In a time where people are cracking down heavily on kink and trying to decry it as deviance that shouldn't exist, being kink positive can be a very important, good thing.
At the same time though, the people have squicks, and when it comes to kink and a good culture towards sex in general, people have to be allowed to have squicks. If anyone's hearing the term for the first time, a squick is essentially a concept that just grosses you right out, you do not want to see it, you do not want to learn more, maybe it even distresses you to see it, but not to the extent that you would consider ot triggering content. A couple of common tend to bodily excrement: piss and shit, alongside guro (extensive bodily mutilation combined with sexual imagery). A squick doesn't have to be extreme, it doesn't have to be unusual, it's just something that grosses an individual out, and they don't want to see it. (And because this is tumblr and it must be said: no, racism is not a squick.)
Sometimes, we lean so heavily into the negative that we refuse to allow positivity. Sometimes, we get so into positivity, that we refuse to acknowledge negatives. People are allowed to talk about their squicks. If people see something that grosses them out, they don't have to shut up about it just because it's someone else's kink. Kinkshaming, the idea that someone would go up to someone else and tell them they're gross for their kink, is something people shouldn't do in general. But expressing disgust and distaste for a kink in general isn't kinkshaming - that's just talking about your squick.
Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That's Okay is about not hating on other people or demanding their works not exist because you hate the kink, not pretending that you find every kink, fetish, or sexual concept totally wonderful and would never react with disgust towards one. This idea in fandom that if you don't like something you should never say anything publicly because what if someone does like that thing, and is upset that you publicly don't like that thing, is ridiculous, and it has been for a while. Negative emotions have a place in fandom, especially in regard to sexual content. You shouldn't harass people who share a kink (especially when their content is tagged this is why everyone should read the tags) - but you also shouldn't go around saying people aren't allowed to use their own online space to process their disgust.
I've been seeing a lot of people lately saying anyone discussing how much they dislike a kink concept is just a kinkshamer, an anti, the purity police, and it's getting beyond ridiculous. We have the right to engage in kink, to write about kink, to make kinky art, create audio for it, and to in general delight in all kinds of kinky works. We also have the responsibility to make sure we're tagging correctly. Others have the right to dislike kink, including our own kinks, and to talk about how much they dislike those kinks. They have the responsibility to make sure they're curating correctly, that they're reading the tags and warnings on a work, and that they work out their negative responses in their own space.
Multiple things can be true: kink is a great way to explore sexuality and desire and a wide range of topics. people deserve to share their interest in kink without harassment or being belittled. one person's joy can be another person's squick. people deserve to share their squick without harassment or being belittled.
#been seeing some annoying kink discourse for a WHILE#the fact that purity police are always trying to go after kink has made some people have this#calcified response of if you don't react to every kink with interest or neutral respect then you're kinkshaming and an anti#if we want to bring back the useage of terms like squick you have to accept that people will also openly talk about their squicks#and in much less than positive terms#and that's fine!#fandom dicosurse#Even if actually this goes beyond fandom because I definitely see some people being annoying like this in real life too#the number of people I have known who are snide and dismissive towards anyone who's having what they see as vanilla sex#the number of people I have known react with visceral disgust if someone's having anything but so called vanilla sex#We have to move away from this idea that you can only talk about things in neutral or positive tones#being negative about something is perfectly fine as long as you are respectful towards others

whats your favoyrite smut series that do involve cannibalism?
i honestly wouldn't necessarily call these smut bc they've got something else going on ykwim. there's a difference between like. "the hero wants to have the demon king's offspring" and "gochisousama ga kikoenai" tonally even though they're both raunchy demon sex porn. smut is an honorable genre about sucking and fucking without restraint and calling it "smut" implies more cannibalistic suck-n-fuck than there actually is.
that being said
EAT by nagabe is probably one of my favorite bl manga at the moment, like, period. it's got great character design, a stunning art style, and it's very grounded and down to earth and almost... realistic? it's good.
same goes for MADK by ryo suzuri, an outrageous high-fantasy romp that i'd describe as epic power-scaling seinen with guro, fae logic, and the end-all-be-all of toxic yaoi. if you want bl with clear-cut romance this definitely isn't for you -- the relationship between the two main characters is a lot more complicated. MADK is bl, but it isn't romance if that makes sense. gorgeous, gooey art, incredible character design, and really pretty stylized gore.
both recontextualize queer desire as cannibalism in different ways, and with very different tones. EAT is a love story about fear, shame, and finding someone who sees you, respects you, and desires you all the same. MADK is a yucky, toxic, gore-filled queer coming of age (that i personally read as having trans allegory/symbolism but i digress.)
both come with their own warnings, so keep that in mind.

hxh theory: is feitan a p3d0phile?
tw's: mentions of l0l1c0n, paraphilia, p3d0philia, sadism and torture because its fucking feitan, cp (debatable if you consider l0l1c0n cp), mentions of problematic hxh ships such as feitan x kalluto and hisoka x gon
just a note: before you come at me with your pitchforks leaving hate in my asks and dms, i am not a fan of l0l1c0n nor am i trying to defend it, this post is a simple theory i have gathered by evidence in the manga, no one is saying that you should believe this theory, it's more of a "do with this information what you will" kind of thing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
so, you may be reading this title and you're thinking "what the actual fuck?" and you probably believe that i pulled this straight out of the deepest parts of my ass, but what if i told you i had some plausible evidence for this theory?
so, for starters, this thought actually came to me when i was reading a post by a user on here named @/cautionworks (i'm not going to tag them here because i don't know them nor do i want to seem like a bother) who made a post relating to their favorite ships (warning as the post does contain problematic ships such as hisogon and such, not saying in particular im against the ship, im just giving out a warning to anyone who is triggered by minor x adult ships) and there was a ship listed as feitan x kalluto.
in the passage it mentions that they found out that feitan may be into l0l1, which at first thought was a bit strange but once you think about it more, the concept isn't the most absurd for someone like him.
i haven't seen anyone actually talk about feitan possibly being into l0l1c0n, much less being a p3do, probably because of the anti's in the fandom.
so, lets get on with the actual evidence!
in the yorknew city arc, after he was done torturing the owl, he is seen reading a book by an author named trevor brown, and as stated on his hunterpedia page, trevor is a controversial artist who's work involves paraphilia; atypical sexual urges.
according to trevor's wikipedia page, "His work explores paraphilias, such as lolicon, ero guro, BDSM, and other fetish themes. Innocence, violence, misogyny, and Japanese popular culture all collide in Brown's art."
there is also a reddit post relating to this topic as well, and according to said post the topic was popular on tik tok at a certain period in time (not very important but i thought it was kind of interesting since im a tik tok user and content creator kind of)
so, does this make feitan a p3d0phile? i can see why people would think so, and i can also see why people wouldn't.
why i would is simple; trevor brown's art speaks for itself, the usage of fictional little girls in... lets just say, VERY interesting situations would make one assume off rip that feitan may be a p3d0phile, or at least a l0l1con, not to mention, togashi isn't afraid of making a character like this especially since we have hisoka (not saying hisoka is a p3d0, but many do, and im just trying to prove a point and give an example as to why the concept of feitan being a p3d0 isn't something completely out of the ordinary, hxh does get pretty dark after all).
why i wouldn't: i've seen some arguments that feitan may not hold the same views as trevor despite him doing some questionable things, similar to how people may like a certain character or even person in real life but not agree with everything they say or do, not to mention he doesn't seem to act weird or overly charming with kids like hisoka, he certainly isn't afraid to hurt or torture one (gon) but theres no actual implications outside of him reading this book by a controversial artist that he is sexually attracted to them.
but in my personal opinion, unless specified by togashi himself, or given any more details about how he feels about such things i wouldn't go as far as to call feitan a p3d0 just because he's seen reading a book by someone known to create l0l1 art, hell, he might be reading a book that doesn't include anything relating to p3d0philia, since the cover art isn't explicitly shown.

Speaking how stupid and pointless proship dni is: There's this artist I follow on twitter and for the longest time they didn't have proship dni on their profile until recently they added but also antis dni. This person isn't a fancop cus their history of being friends with other artists that fancops hated. Also they draws CNC, dubcon, abuse in their art which they did get attacked by fantis for it. Funny enough the artist still follows others users with proship dni, note they been drawing dubcon(and other things in nature) and support cope art that are messy before using the dni.
They just using proship dni as a shield from other antis, also probably the results of being targeted by fantis over their darkfic art. Adding antis dni making it look like they're not on either sides cus both parties sucks. We all know that don't matter to fantis even when you don't called yourself a proshipper, just being seen weird and your art being yucky to fantis is enough to group as pRoShIt.
Which bring out the fantis/users with proship dni that still follows the artist that draws CNC, dubcon, and abuse: Is it because those themes are some of the things are they're ok with and likes? Yes. Believe or not, they are fantis who are into those things just like gore, guro, and cannibalism. Look like if you into and draws/writes lolishota (just in general underage characters in nsfw stuff), noncon (what, cus dubcon seem more safe lol), and incest is a huge crossing the line and mark the no returns in fantis' eyes.
