Ni hace falta decirlo, David Beckham es una figura icónica del fútbol mundial: jugador del Manchester United, del Real Madrid, de Los Angeles Galaxy, del Milan, del Paris St. Germain y, por supuesto, de la Selección Nacional inglesa, lo suyo fue siempre el más alto perfil; además, se casó con Victoria Adams, miembro de las Spice Girls. Pero para Jess (Parminder Nagra) es mucho más: es una inspiración, una pasión y una obsesión. Ama al fútbol y persigue el sueño de convertirse en una jugadora profesional. Sus dotes naturales, que le permiten unirse a partidos amateurs con los chicos del barrio, la llevan al radar de un equipo de chicas, acompañada de su nueva mejor amiga, Juliette (Keira Knightley) y comandado por Joe (Jonathan Rhys-Myers). El problema es que su nuevo hobby no es del agrado de su familia hindú, por lo que el esfuerzo requerido para cumplir sus objetivos será supremo.

Tony (Ameet Chana) es el mejor amigo de Jess. Un muchacho sensible y fiel cuya cercanía con la chica es tanta que muchos aventuran que entre ellos hay una relación que excede la mera amistad. Aunque sí se profesan un gran afecto y respeto, lo cierto es que la realidad indica otra cosa: a Tony, según se lo confiesa, también le gusta Beckham, aunque no sólo como jugador.

Esta es prácticamente la única escena utilizada para confirmar su homosexualidad, algo que el muchacho, proveniente de la misma comunidad de su amiga, oculta a su familia. A lo largo de todo el metraje de "Bend It Like Beckham" (o "Jugando con el destino", según su título latinoamericano, o "Quiero ser como Beckham", de acuerdo con su denominación española), la directora Gurinder Chadha juega con la idea social de que, para quienes conocen las aficiones de Jess y Juliette, todas las jugadoras de fútbol son lesbianas. Chadha indaga en cuestiones como el feminismo, la cultura hindú, las opresiones sociales y los prejuicios de una manera divertida y amena, apta para todos los públicos, logrando una obra que, sin buscárselo, ha alcanzado un lugar destacado entre las películas que conjugan romance y deporte.

Another good positive movie alert: Blinded By the Light opens this weekend! Don’t you want to walk out of a movie feeling happy sometimes? Priyanka Is Not Collaborating With Gurinder – Madhu Chopra

Actress Priyanka Chopra’s mother Madhu Chopra who also looks after her work on Tuesday rubbished the news of her daughter working with British-Indian filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, saying that it is just the rumor mill doing the rounds and that no such conversation took place.

When asked if Priyanka is working with Chadha in the near future, Madhu Chopra told IANS here that “what you read is a rumour”.  “It is true that I went to Cannes with our Sikkimese film ‘Pahuna’ for its trailer launch and we met Gurinder there. She told me that she is visiting India soon for her upcoming film ‘Partition: 1947’ and that we should catch up soon. So I went to meet her at the trailer launch of her film and then went to a coffee shop, where few journalists saw us chatting and made news out of it!

“She was talking about her upcoming projects and the kind of stories she is working on etc. but we did not have any conversation on casting Priyanka in her next. You know, the next day when news came out, Gurinder got so upset and texted me saying ‘Indian media is so exasperating! What is wrong with them?’,” she said.

“Gurinder also told me that ‘Madhu, I did not talk to the press or gave any quotes, so please don’t take me wrong’. This is annoying; journalists should be more responsible while reporting on anything,” added Chopra.

She said that in these days of social media and online journalism, people write many things without any proper research and that this is not the first time such miscommunication happened.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31 at Berlin, Priyanka also faced trolls and criticism for her knee-length dress. Priyanka later put out a picture along with her mother on Instagram captioning it: “legs of the day”.

Asking about her opinion on Priyanka’s way of dealing with gossipmongers and criticism, Chopra said: “All I taught her, if you have done no wrong, you have nothing to fear. She was going for ‘Baywatch’ promotion, suddenly she bumped onto Mr Modi, she cannot go for a dress change and come back to say hello? The meeting was not pre-planned, it was impromptu.”

“These days, social media trollers are just seeking for attention without focusing on content.. yes they are getting two minutes of fame but there is no credibility,” said Chopra who is quite busy with their upcoming Marathi film “Kay Re Rascalaa” produced by Purple Pebble Pictures. It is releasing on July 14.

ING Discerning Eye Exhibition Now in its 31st year, the ‘ING Discerning Eye Exhibition’ annual treat for London gallery-goers showcases artworks no larger than 50 centimetres in size, all of which are for sale and ideal for those with limited space. The works are largely affordable too, with prices starting at £80. The 2022 exhibition is showcasing over 500 artworks by more than 350 artists. It's a carefully curated selection, whittled down from 7,300 entries. The artworks in the exhibition are chosen by six art world experts - two artists, two critics and two collectors - who curate their own sections as individual displays within the exhibition. This year the team comprises RWA director Alison Bevan, film director Gurinder Chadha, curator Aindrea Emelife, ‘ArtCan' director Kate Enters, printmaker David Ferry and painter Ansel Krut.
