South African Government Attempts Sketchy Sponsorship Deal With Tottenham Hotspur

I wish I had more time, and I could really start paying more attention to the local news, because this is a real disaster-class here.

Over the last month or so, details have emerged (mainly through the South African news), that my local government is attempting to enter a 1 billion rand (the rand is the South African currency) sponsorship deal with English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

And as it turns out this news has been met with curiosity, annoyance and outright dissent, at a time when there is much scrutiny around state expenditure.

See, this in a country where we are facing an electricity crisis, rampant unemployment, the looting of the country’s tax reserves and a deep culture of corruption and graft on the part of the country’s political leadership.

Even if you’re trying to sell the idea that this is an investment in the country’s tourism sector, the question, is why are resources being used for tourism, when many of the other key sectors of government, especially service delivery, are massively under-resourced?

And yes, you can please believe that the visibilty of Tottenham Hotspur is the reason why this story has not left public dialogue in over a month, but there are plenty of instances where frivolous goverment spending does not get noticed.

You have to understand the culture that’s been set forth by state capture, and state capture is a nice way of saying, outside entities have been looting South Africa’s state owned resources. 

The way they do that is by bribing the most senior politicians in the country, and then awarding 3rd party contracts to companies that they own, and for which they are then grossly overpaid.

That’s more or less what happened during the Gupta scandal, and more such instances of the country’s resources and tax revenue being looted.

This is how you end up with a country, where citizen’s access to electricity is cut off every 6 to 8 hours on account of generators being poorly maintained, the national airline (South African Airways) is underfunded and the local television broadcaster (the SABC) has let go of so many employees.

Now, in a country with this kind of political and economic backdrop, should the we really be considering entering any kind of sponsorship with anyone, and can our government gaurantee any kind of transparecy, or is this just people in our local government trying to get in to Daniel Levy’s good graces?

The idea of this sponsorship, that would have been supported with a marketing campaign, is similar to what you would have seen with Arsenal Football Club’s “Visit Rwanda” campaign, and would have seen Spurs player donning similar kind of slogans or insignia promoting South Africa as a tourist destination on thier kits and jerseys.

The point is that this is a waste of resources and wrongly allocated funds in a country that needs those resources used in other areas of our infastructure, namely in service delivery.

1 billion rand, may not be a ton of money when were talking about government infastructure, but it’s money this government cannot justify spending on tourism when were are literally experiencing an electricity crisis.

Since this news, the Chief Financing Officer of the South African Department of Tourism has resigned and the attempted deal looks like it has been foiled due to bad press..

As I’ve mentioned, they couldn’t have picked a worse time to try this, because at this point, even political opposition are using the Totteham deal as a talking point regarding the ruling party’s intentiions with such a deal.

More will follow, but this is a story that hits a lot of different layers or points of interest for me. From sports to corruption, to things happening relating to the state of my own country. 

So the next time you see sports teams wearing clothing that encourages tourism, know that your club or team likely does business with corrupt governments and that jersey or kit is sponsored by taxes provided by a foreign working class that will never see any return on that investment.

Indian police state that the Gupta cousin-brother suspects were using a disclosed time-altering app to fast-forward through time illegally. Their actions resulted in the destruction of his aforesaid showbiz male actor, despite the immense popularity of Bollywood, the said country.

Some pro-Bollywood fans praise the idea as a motorcade-like celebration all across India country-wide.

Khushi bit her tongue. Payal didn’t need to know her china-man hadn’t let her sleep all night. She definitely didn’t need to know how he made her muffle her screams just before dawn arose.

She blushed helplessly and fervently hoped they didn’t notice.

“ Everyone knows “

Khushi looked up, completely bewildered.

“ About Aravind and Ratna Raizada. Apparently they were legends in our court. They were the voice of the common man. The army flourished under him! Ratna ji ensured that the widows of the soldiers are well provided for, till this day!” Lavanya spoke, while donning on a pair of pearl earrings.

“Really?”

“ Yes! People are very happy that their son is finally here. And Ratna ji might finally be back with them. “

“ The kingdom missed them.” Khushi said softly.

Trumpets blared. Colours emerged. Rows of decked up elephants and horses lined the pathway to the banquet hall.

She could hear the roar of laughter from afar. Her pace quickened at the anticipation of seeing Arnav.

Payal nudged her sharply.

She looked in the direction of a tall man, who sat quite awkwardly as he laughed with his fellow soldiers.

“ I am going to marry him”

Khushi spluttered in shock. Keeping her goblet down, she whispered angrily,

“ How could you not tell me you had fallen in love?”

“ What rubbish! I saw him just now”

“ You haven’t even talked to him once and your heart is set on marrying him?”

Shaking her head, Khushi went back to attending her meal.

Clutching her skirt, Khushi attempted to keep her nerves at bay. 

Folding her hands in a greeting , she smiled nervously at the woman.

“Khushi” her father’s booming voice startled her. 

“ This is our dearest Ratna ji I have told you about. Well, no matter how little you know about her. She knows much about you.” Shashidhar laughed.

Confused, Khushi turned towards Arnav, who avoided her eyes and had a curious flush up his neck.

“ I…I don’t understand “

Warm hands clasped her own, as she met Ratna’s kind eyes.

“ Well we have an eternity for that Khushi! You are just as beautiful as Garima! Shashi told me so much about your skills at war, but left out your beauty in his letters “

Khushi smiled. There were so many questions swarming her mind. But for now the moment of meeting someone who talked of her mother, without the usual pity, was too magical to let go.

“ Come on now. The evening must go on” Shashi laughed.

Her father stood looking over the merriment.

The drum gongs . Once, twice, thrice.

A palpable silence filled the air.

“ My brave soldiers and their courageous families who have gathered here. I am so proud and humbled by your feats in the field. The rebellion which began with the death of innocents has ended with the forgiving of prisoners. The people are celebrating their safety and freedom. And it is all owed to you. You, my brave soldiers!”

A deafening cheer followed.

“ I cannot mention our victory while overlooking this young man, who had risked his life to ensure the win was certain. Many of you young ones wouldn’t know the name Aravind Raizada. But he is the one who wrote the rules and lessons you follow by heart. The first man in the Gupta kingdom who organised our armed forces. And a dearest friend of mine.”

Khushi sneaked a glance at Arnav. The solemn look in his eyes and Ratna ji’s wistful smile moved her to tears.

“ I present to you, his son Arnav Raizada! Arnav is trained in the 14 vidyas and 64 kalas from the famed land of China. I am sure his views and skills will bring forth change in our defence strategies.”

Whistles and hooting boomed through the hall.

“And it pleases me beyond measure to announce today the betrothal of my daughter, Rajkumari Khushi Gupta to Arnav Raizada”

Khushi froze. Blood rushed through her ears, as the applause dimmed. Her shocked eyes met Arnav’s. His assuring smile calmed her racing heart.

Before she knew it, her father clasped her and Arnav’s hand together.

She saw the glee on everyone’s face. Payal winked at her. Lavanya smiled. Manorama ji clapped vigorously.

Still numb at the pace of the events, Khushi found her anchor in the long,sturdy fingers which entwined themselves around her own, lending her strength.

Engulfed by the crowd, she smiled at the congratulations, the warm wishes and the love she received. Her mind was still buzzing. And she knew the one who could answer her questions was going to be occupied for hours now.

The goblets clinked, the plates chimed and the music strummed as they celebrated the union of lovers of the land.

On: The Guptas' Role as Shyam's Accomplices

Or: Why is Khushi appointed, by the Guptas as well as by the show's narrative, as the whole and soul responsible party for the action and decision to hide Shyam's truth?

Khushi, of course, is emotionally closest to the Raizada family and she is Shyam's victim and apparently, that's why the Guptas somehow left it ALL up to her to decide what to do. Well, it's so stupid to say the least. She is so young and traumatized and probably feeling all this misplaced shame in the aftermath of Shyam's disgusting harassment and its implications in Anjali's heartbreak and a public scandal - is it the right state of mind for her to do the objectively right but very difficult thing that is going to make her feel even more responsible for Anjali's pain (even if she's absolutely not)?

Remember that they made Khushi do this all alone as well - which means she now has to go, all by herself, and openly discuss her harassment to the other victim of it, who is most likely to be disbelieving and unsympathetic, not to mention completely traumatized herself - which Buaji might have fucking guessed btw even if Khushi was naive enough to think Anjali would simply believe her and not have a volatile reaction (Anjali would be right in her place to be disbelieving and angry especially since Khushi didn't really have any proof on her).

And the fact that she is emotionally close to the Raizadas actually makes it MORE difficult for Khushi (being who she is) to do the morally right thing - she is swayed by the temptation to keep silence for short-term relief of NOT hurting several people she deeply cares for, and her naviety does the rest by convincing her the long-term will work out too - maybe Shyam will mend his ways after all! It was a bad and morally wrong decision to keep the secret, and the Guptas should have fucking known that and been unequivocally dead set against it.

This is what makes me really uncomfortable as well as angry about this moment - why was this enormous action and decision about their collective future left to Khushi, the youngest member of the family, the most traumatized by all of this? How is being the sole and only one going to reveal to Raizadas, an appropriate responsibility for a freshly traumatized 18-22 year old? Why not go and tell it as a whole family, at last give Khushi some fucking moral support in all this??? Knowing she's going to be inundated with suspicious questions and maybe even anger & insults?

This decision massively affects ALL of their futures. They are all implicated in various ways. Khushi has to constantly be around her harasser, pretending to be nice to him, and lying to all her good friends, betraying their trust. Payal has to keep up this terrible secret for the rest of her life spent with her husband, her love - its an even bigger betrayal of trust!

And then there's Buaji and Garima - the elders - they do not have the excuse of youth and inexperience! Since they consider it their RIGHT to bully the youngsters, especially Khushi, into doing what they want when it suits them, they also carry the responsibility to correctly guide them when they are faced with difficult and challenging decisions that could have consequences the youngsters cannot even comprehend. They felt free to exercise that right when it came to forcing Khushi to marry Shyam, but when it came to the responsibility of PROTECTING Khushi from Shyam, guiding Khushi in a morally complex situation, they utterly failed.

They behaved exactly like Arnav's worst idea of a gold-digging middle class family: posturing about values and morals when it suits them, but when it comes to a real test of principles, they chose to do the easier, morally wrong thing to avoid risk of personal losses.

Shyam is an excellent manipulator and the fandom often terms him a snake, but despite that, he doesn't actually possess magical hypnotizing powers - he is simply very good at honing on people's weaknesses and bringing them out front. All he had to do was lay down the framework of this being a question of Payal's Happiness vs Doing the Right Thing/Protecting Khushi - and it took over their minds. As soon as Shyam spewed his spiel about Payal's possible future of yet another broken marriage and left, Buaji, Garima and Payal too basically knew they did NOT want to tell the truth, they wanted this secret kept. Not even being brave enough to just say it, its like they simply wash their hands off the moral responsibility of this situation, leaving it all up to Khushi to decide.

And with this, they also cemented in Khushi's mind that she truly is alone in all this. After all, if its HER choice to keep Shyam's secret, then she has no right to complain if she faces unpleasant consequences of this decision right? Like, if he continually harasses her afterwards, or if, say, Arnav misunderstands the whole thing and forcefully marries Khushi for 6 months. After all, whatever Khushi may say to herself or others, she knows the truth - she and her family kept that secret primarily because they didn't have the courage to face the unpleasant consequences of speaking up. The shame is Khushi, at least, faces the consequences and feels the guilt about this - but she ends up taking on her family's share of the consequences and guilt too, to tragic results.
