the writers really did such a poor job with arthur and gwens relationship. merlin and freya had more chemistry in one episode than arthur and gwen had across the entire series. the only times i really felt anything for their relationship was in the once and future queen and in lancelot de luc. and even in the once and future queen gwen goes off listing all the reasons why she doesnt like arthur and why they wont work and then theyre kissing that same episode? not to mention, it annoyed me when arthur made merlin prepare gwen breakfast and get her flowers in 5x10 despite gwen once being furious at him because he lied about making her dinner in 2x02 and now shes just like whatever.

it just felt like to me that their feelings for each other had no real development. gwen didnt even seem to like arthur at all in the first season, and even calls him a bully in the first episode. then she suddenly likes him and thinks he’ll be the greatest king camelot has had in le morte d’arthur? theyd barely even interacted before then. their relationship also seemed to come at the cost of gwens character in the sense that the more involved they got, the more gwen just became arthurs love interest and his advisor when they got married. the writers made an already dull relationship even duller. i swear arthur and gwen had more genuine affection for each other when gwen was evil than when she wasnt.

i also dont like how merlin and gwens friendship was basically forgotten. gwen annoyed me when she told arthur not to look for merlin in a servant of two masters and she seemed more concerned about the threat merlin was to arthur than about what happened to merlin. they just stripped gwen of pretty much all of her agency and made her into this perfect queen. of course arthur and gwen were going to get together because they were following the arthurian legend, but that doesn’t mean the writers couldnt have done a better job at writing their relationship.

I swear--I have this in firm memory--that floating around the internet somewhere is a beautifully scripted text-based RPG called some variant of Guinevere where you play as Guinevere. (a few years ago, I dunno, 2019? Earlier?)

It is only text. It is the most lo-fi production ever, it is text on a slightly off-white background, and it was utterly transporting. There were paths that turned you into a powerful sorceress. You could be into Arthur or not, into anyone or not, you could go a magic route or a political power route or a "I just want to love someone and have fun" route, it was exquisitely done. 10/10 storytelling. It starts off the day you get married and follows your early life at Camelot.

And I bookmarked it because I got through two chapters of it and it was still under construction or something and I have lost the bookmark and both DuckDuckGo and the tumblr search engine are determined to keep me in the dark and to make matters worse, somehow there's now a Choices story about Guinevere and the only thing that's even remotely relevant that comes up as results are related to that app. But it wasn't an app! It was a browser-based text-based RPG and it was beautiful and I can't find it.

not long after artur’s death, come the nightmares. the queen and the magician find each other then; and while they don’t quite fit together, not really, never will, the new emptiness never filled, holding each other at night keeps them sane enough.

the nightmares still come, of course, and arthur’s still dead at the bottom of the lake. but he remains, in a way, in the two people he loved; and they guard him, his love forever safe between their warm bodies.
