ahhhhh
Today, I saw another Guild Wars player wielding a spear on land for the first time since the Paragon class got to run around with them in Guild Wars: Nightfall (released 2006; Guild Wars 2 was released in 2012 and largely cannibalized the GW1 player base). And it was in Queensdale (starting human zone focused on levels 1-15 out of 80) of all places. <3

"If I had a nickel for every time a scorned human god escaped imprisonment in the Mists to then lead a warpath through Elona whilst also using its people as fuel for their armies and then be told the other human gods can't do anything to help, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice."

I still find it so funny that Path of Fire takes place in the Crystal Desert because like:
Rogue human god cast out by his peers goes on a revenge crusade during which he tears through the Crystal Desert/Elona and leaves permanent damage and corruption in his wake part 2, electric boogaloo (now it’s fire themed)

I watched the video with my bff (the one who's been my friend since we were in the same grade in middle school together in NW Washington State) and we agreed it's got big PNW vibes! Super exciting!!
But YES a good portion of the GW2 community has yearned for land spears since the game began, basically, because until this you could only get them as underwater weapons, yet they were the main signature weapon of one of the primary GW1 classes back in the day, the Paragon:

The kodan (the bear people) are already super cool, so I'm hoping they do something interesting there!
But ngl, I'm even more excited for the customized housing instances than the land spears, even as a GW1 devotee. My family got into MMOs via City of Heroes which had very elaborate base building capacities (and even more on the Homecoming no-longer-pirate server), and while I do think GW2 is the superior MMO in many, many ways, we've really missed truly customizable home instances. I hope it's good.
@anghraine saw the trailer for the new GW2 trailer, thought of you so congrats on your upcoming Pacific Northwest adventure

Thinking about Guild Wars and noticed that compared to Prophecies GW2 doesn’t have nearly as much content. Like in Prophecies you can explore the entire map including the heart of maguuma and the crystal desert whereas gw2 only added them with HoT and PoF. Also the art style changed a lot. GW1 had a wholly different style and feel than GW2. And if I remember correctly the original was cheaper than Gw2. Wonder if that was intentional.
Now I don’t want to say one is better than two or anything. The rumours about Guild Wars 3 being in development got me thinking and I have a lot of fears regarding it. Personally I would like if they took Prophecies and combine it with the more modern UI of gw2 but keep the npc henchmen party and the powerful skills. And for the love of mox give me the elite platemail armor set!! Also I prefer the artstyle of gw1 more than the kinda naiv look of gw2.
What was your favourite Guild Wars game so far and what hopes do you have for gw3 ?

The Easiest Class in Guild Wars Nightfall
These are the classes
Warrior
Ranger
Monk
Necromancer
Mesmer
Elementalist
Paragon
Dervish
Warrior has both healing and armour.
Monk has more healing abilities to cast but the same amount of mana -> not much useful.
Warrior seems the easiest class to play for survival.

Desert Highlands
This maybe will sound stupid but I had a question about Elona, and the Desert Highlands.
We know that after the Pretenders war, the 3 province, Istan, Kourna and Vabbi, are created. We also know that Amnoon is independant. But what about the Desert Highlands?
Their last known rulers were the Primeval kings & queens if I'm not wrong..?
So how does it work?

At this point there is no use in complaining about storylines in a video game because I can guarantee you they don't have black and brown people in those writers rooms. PoF was lackluster and low-key it looks like EoD went the same way. Sounds like they threw the Black and the Asian folks to the side like I knew they would and y'all just now catching on?

I am pretty hypocritical in my GW2 annoyances, in all honesty.
I was super irritated the other day by some guy ranting about how humans and the human gods were the worst thing that ever happened to the world in-story Because Lore (but a very, hmm, slanted perspective on the lore). Someone actually pointed out that the goddess Kormir became a god by basically saving the world and the dude reverted back to ranting about Kormir stealing the glory from the players blahblah and ffs it's 2023 and somehow Kormir Stealing the Glory discourse from 2006 is still a thing.
Now, do I cherish my eternal grudge over the thousands of civilians massacred in the Searing and in the consequent invasion, from the game released a year earlier? Well, yes.
IDK!! Trahearne discourse was just Kormir discourse 2.0 with less misogyny, but getting original flavor is just ... let her go, she's fine, she did her best and game mechanics aren't her fault. But I am solidly on team never forgive, never forget about the Searing and the invasion.

Fun fact: This Herta may or may not be the Sunspear henchman NPC from GW1 of the same name. Her friend that sends you to find Herta. Laural, is from Elona as well.
It’s also shown multiple times that ghosts of GW1 NPCs, such as Dunkoro, Kimmes, and Turai, senses that the Commander’s soul is old and familiar - an implication of being the GW1 Hero reincarnated.
I like to headcanon that Herta stuck with us because of this familiarity.

Amazing savings on the original Guild Wars on steam right now for the Autumn Steam Sale. If you've ever wanted to try out the original and gone ".... nah" at the 40 bucks price tag then this is the time. Sales don't come around often for this game, and especially not one this large. GW1 is a great game on its own merit, but for GW2 people, if you link your accounts you can earn skins and titles and achievement points from doing stuff in GW1! Details on what you can earn is here: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Eye_of_the_North_(instance)
A few things I should point out:
If you play GW2 through steam you cannot link a GW1 account to your steam gw2 account, sorry. You'll still have a great game to play! But can't earn rewards to move over.
No such thing as a "GW1 steam account" it's just.... part of your anet account. So don't worry about the above in reverse
Eye of the north is needed for the HoM rewards and you need a base game to add eye of the north to, so you will need to own the Trilogy, or a stand-alone campaign (Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall). Considering the trilogy is this cheap, no point going after just one campaign.
For the love of Dwayna, play the game for the game first of all, then worry about Hall of Monuments rewards later.
This is a very very very very different game to GW2 or any typical MMO. (GW1 is not an MMO anyway, it's a COORPG, Co-operative online roleplaying game). It's old, it shows its age. You can't jump, don't worry, you'll get over it.
I highly recommend starting a character in each of the campaigns so you can see the starting story as it were, then when you get to the point where you can travel to the other lands you'll have some idea which of those 3 characters you want to play on.
You will actually have to play the game to get gw2 rewards. I know this sounds silly for me to say, but I've seen my fair share of people buy the game and go "how do I get my stuff. what, I have to *play* this?"
Be patient with it, it's old and crinkly in parts, but it's a great game. <3 And seeing all the original stuff and going "I've been there in the future!" is always fun.
GW1 has a wiki just as great as the GW2 wiki. A lot of passionate people put time in it and like the gw2 wiki it's a massive community labour of love.
I'm always down to talk about all aspects of GW1 (and gw2 ofc) so if you have questions about anything, please hit me up. GW1 is where I got the nickname "Faepedia" after all :D

GW2: Why Elona matters
Since I am on a Guild Wars kick, let me tell you why I love Elona so much. (Note, Northern European white person here.) When I started playing Guild Wars, I started with Nightfall. What stood out for me was the location and how it was depicted. This was the first time I saw Africa depicted not as a place of poverty and misery or a place where lions and such lived. Elona was depicted as a beautiful place of both culture and history. Libraries, their own warrior caste and politics. All without forgetting where it was set. This continued in GW2, where Path of Fire lets us see Elona in higher definition. Africa has always been a continent of colour and GW2 truly leaned into it. Going around Amnoon you will see painted buildings and bright clothes, nevermind the wealth seen in Vabbi. Elona is also, like real Africa is, a place of different ecosystems. Sure, there is the savanna, but there are swamps, snowy mountains and jungles as well. What makes Elona even better in GW2, is how it is framed. Elona is a place of history, of ancient knowledge and people. While Cantha is a place of progress and technology, Elona is a place of wisdom and tradition. Elona matters, because it is a depiction of Africa without the burden of colonialism. While it is important to unpack the colonialism Africa faces, it is also important to show the immense value Africa has in itself. It's culture, history and art are rarely shown in works set in the real world, in fantasy it is often ignored entirely. It is a look into a place rarely given attention to, without defining it by its worst qualities.

Lineart for this picture was done for side project of Tyrian Gazette, a 2019 Guild Wars 2 project organized by GW2Collective and sponsored by ArenaNet. It was a coloring book themed with GW2 legendaries. Mine was a hammer, Sharur. I colored it myself for fun.
