Security

The Austrians are a very law-abiding nation, almost obsessed with the rule of law. Almost all the problems faced by tourists in Austria are associated with petty scams and fraud. In large cities, pickpockets and petty thieves should be wary; there are frequent cases of transport fraud. You should not carry large amounts of cash with you or withdraw them from an ATM in front of everyone. Documents and money is recommended to be kept in the hotel safes or, if necessary, placed in the most inaccessible place. It is not recommended to leave anything of value in the car, while the car itself is best parked in guarded parking lots or well-lit streets.

In the case of direct contact with the robber, it is recommended to comply with all his requirements and not to enter into direct confrontation. It is not recommended to run away from robbers, shout or enter into confrontation with them (although this is not excluded - the law will in any case be on the side of the victim), but in most cases local residents prefer to give money and then call the police.

Interestingly, under federal laws, vagrancy and prostitution are not punishable by law, but are prosecuted at the local level.

There are several areas that are not recommended to visit alone, especially for women. In Vienna, this is the Gurtel district and the Sudbahnhof station after dark, in Graz - the area southwest of the main station, in Salzburg - the western outskirts, and so on. OBB (Austrian Railways) even introduced special sections for women only (Damenabteilen) on InterCity and EuroCity express trains, which run late in the evening. When buying a ticket at the ticket office of the station, you may be asked to provide a place in such a compartment - this will ensure greater safety during embarkation and disembarkation.

Police

The Austrian law enforcement agencies have several offices - directly the police (Polizei, dark green army style uniforms) or the federal police, which controls the capital and other cities in the country. Toponyms and addresses

Street names in Austria are always written in front of the house number on signboards and signs. There are double numbers - the first number indicates the building number, the second - the number of the building or apartment.

Vienna is divided into 23 "postal districts" (Bezirke), with the numbering going in a spiral from Innere-Stadt (Innere Stadt) clockwise. When writing the address here, first write the number of the postal district, then the street name, then the house number and then, through the slash, the apartment number. For example, the address of the form 9, Loblichgasse 11/14, means apartment number 14 in the house number 11 on Löblichgasse street in the ninth district.

Luggage & Luggage Storage

BUDAPEST - Cosa vedere, dove dormire e cosa mangiare

Budapest è definita, la “Parigi dell’Est“. La città ha molti tratti in comune con la capitale francese e alcuni scorci riportano subito alle vedute di Parigi: c’è un fiume, che taglia la città e su cui si affacciano castelli e bei palazzi, e c’è una collina simile a Montmartre su cui arrampicarsi per godersi il panorama su tutta Budapest. Ma le analogie finiscono qui: Budapest per fortuna ha una propria identità e forse anche più di una. Non è un caso, che sia il risultato di tre città: Buda, Pest e Óbuda, unite dal Ponte delle Catene e da altri sette ponti, ancora oggi alcuni degli angoli più fotografati di Budapest. Tre giorni possono bastare per scoprire la capitale ungherese: dalla Budapest romana, a quella medievale con il Castello, passando per un giorno sul Danubio e un bel viaggio nel tempo nelle stazioni della metro, ancora ferme a 130 anni fa. 

Il Quartiere di Buda a Budapest

Il quartiere di Buda è stato il primo nucleo della città di Budapest. Su questa collina e tra le mura del Castello vennero a rifugiarsi gli abitanti di Pest quando ormai gli attacchi dei mongoli divennero insostenibili.

Nacque una città bellissima, capace di rivaleggiare con le vicine Praga e Vienna. Ma poi arrivarono i turchi che conquistarono Buda nel 1541 restandoci per quasi 150 anni. Buda ne uscì trasformata: le chiese divennero moschee e sorsero minareti e bagni turchi. Nel 1686, dopo 75 giorni di bombardamenti, gli austriaci liberarono Buda, ma dello splendore precedente non rimase niente: fu ricostruita mantenendo il vecchio aspetto. Di nuovo distrutta nel 1945 e ancora una volta tirata su, oggi è sede del Palazzo Reale, della Chiesa di Mattia e di alcuni scorci molto belli. Sicuramente uno dei 10 posti di Budapest da vedere assolutamente.

Il Quartiere Pest a Budapest

Se Buda è la parte antica e nobile di Budapest, Pest invece ne è il cuore moderno e innovativo. Irrequieta e disordinata, è il giusto contraltare alla tranquillità di Buda, tutta raccolta intorno al Castello.

Pest non ha grandi musei da vedere: qui piuttosto spicca la Budapest creativa, con i negozietti degli stilisti e dei giovani artisti. Non mancano comunque le cose da vedere: il Palazzo del Parlamento e il Duomo di Santo Stefano, la Grande Sinagoga e il Museo etnografico. È anche la parte di Budapest ideale per fare shopping: lungo il Viale Andrássy c’è da spendere parecchio. C’è anche una Casa del Terrore, usata sia dai nazisti sia dai comunisti, come luogo di tortura.

Il Parco delle Statue di Budapest

Gli abitanti di Budapest sono stati furbi: mentre tutti i paesi dell’Est hanno approfittato della fine del Comunismo per buttare giù le statue sfogando sul marmo decenni di mancata libertà, qui hanno fatto di meglio.

Hanno trasformato questi colossi in un ottimo strumento di sfruttamento della memoria, per quanto brutta possa essere. Hanno quindi messo insieme tutte le statue che rappresentano le grandi figure del comunismo (Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Bela Kun) insieme ad anonimi soldati liberatori dell’ex Urss e hanno creato un Memento Park del comunismo. Se non vi basta guardare in faccia i “compagni” ma volete portarvene a casa un pezzettino, potete anche comprare souvenir degli anni della Guerra Fredda (spille, spillette, magliette, sigarette d’epoca). Se vi interessa, c’è una bella mostra su come veniva addestrata una spia comunista.

La Grande Sinagoga di Budapest

Budapest ha sempre avuto una numerosa comunità ebraica. Ancora oggi sono attive 22 sinagoghe, di cui molte in scuole, ospedali o case private. Proprio nel cuore del ghetto ebraico è attiva la più grande sinagoga d’Europa.

Costruita nel 1859 in stile neo-moresco, può ospitare fino a 3000 persone. Nella parte bassa della sinagoga ci sono posti per 1497 uomini, mentre al piano superiore ci sono posti per 1472 donne. Nel giardino della Sinagoga, proprio sopra una ex fossa comune, c’è un monumento che ricorda gli ebrei uccisi dai nazisti nel 1944-45: è un albero di salice, chiamato “Albero della vita“, con foglie di metallo. Su ognuna di esse è inciso il nome di un martire. 

Il Palazzo del Parlamento a Budapest

Il Parlamento di Budapest è uno dei simboli cittadini, forse il più conosciuto e fotografato. Fu costruito tra il 1885 ed il 1904 dall’architetto Imre Steindl, che si ispirò al Parlamento di Londra e al Duomo di Colonia.

Al gotico esterno, che si impone con guglie, torrette, arcate e finestre, fanno da contrasto gli stili barocco e rinascimentale dell’interno. La grande facciata sul Danubio non rende giustizia alla grandezza complessiva del palazzo: quasi 18.000 metri quadrati, 27 ingressi e 691 stanze. Non c’è che dire, il Presidente della Repubblica, il Primo Ministro e i parlamentari hanno una dimora niente male in cui svolgere le loro funzioni!

L'Isola di Margherita di Budapest

Giardini, terme, piscine, parchi per passeggiare e fare sport. Chi visita Budapest frettolosamente, di solito si perde un giro sull’Isola di Margherita, che si trova proprio al centro del Danubio e si raggiunge facilmente con l’omonimo ponte.

L’ideale è noleggiare una bici sul posto e percorrere gli angoli di questo isolotto in lungo e in largo, in fondo sono solo 2,5 km! Prima dell’Isola di Margherita esistevano tre isolotti distinti: l’isola Balneare, l’isola dei Pittori e l’isola delle Lepri. Unite dal cemento alla fine del 1800, oggi formano un’unica isola che prende il nome dalla figlia del re Béla IV, Margherita, che dopo l’invasione tartara si ritirò in un monastero sull’isola stessa. Oggi è il luogo preferito dagli abitanti che cercano qualche ora senza smog o vanno a farsi un bagno nelle acque termali della grande piscina all’aperto Palatinus.

Le terme di Budapest

Si sa che i romani avevano una speciale predilizione per le terme: non solo non si fecero scappare l’occasione di un bagno caldo nelle sorgenti di Budapest, ma fecero di più.

Fondarono “Aqiuncum” con delle grandiose terme, di cui ancora oggi si possono vedere i resti in diversi posti di Óbuda. Da allora, Budapest è sempre stata una città termale e non ha perso questa sua caratteristica anche quando è diventata una metropoli: oggi è l’unica capitale europea con le terme e nel 1934 ha ottenuto l’appellativo di “città termale”. Voi potete godervi questa lunga tradizione e, soprattutto, 70 millioni di litri al giorno con una temperatura da 21 a 78 C°, in bagni termali grandi e piccoli. Le terme più famose e grandi di Budapest sono sicuramente le Széchenyi, ma c’è ne sono tante altre. 

COSA MANGIARE 

Non si può definire certamente una cucina leggera. Carne, patate, cipolla, spezie e paprika sono la base di molti piatti di Budapest e dell’Ungheria.

Preparazioni supercaloriche che si giustificano soprattutto con il clima freddo, che in inverno può portare anche a -50 gradi sotto lo zero. Con un freddo del genere, il corpo richiede calorie e il palato di consolarsi un po’. Ed ecco che tutto inizia con il lardo soffritto a cui si aggiunge la paprika: è la base di tutto, anche del famoso Goulash, il piatto tipico per eccellenza. Non esiste un goluash uguale ad un altro, perché ognuno lo cucina con una variante: non possono comunque mancare carne, patate, pepe e paprika. Oltre al Goulash ci sono altre zuppe, mentre il piatto di carne più famoso è il maiale con (tanto per cambiare) paprika e patate. C’è tanto da provare, basta prepararsi a lunghe digestioni.

DOVE DORMIRE

Sono stato due volte a Budapest: la prima in appartamento proprio al centro della città e la seconda in Hotel. Forse per un soggiorno breve (3-4 giorni max) consiglio l’albergo.
