Irony has a way of finding him in these late hours. Day is gone. Sunken as ships from olden travels, dipping below the surface of the horizon, night comes. An evening he would gladly take to find someone to satiate his current cravings BUT Landon is much more focused on settling in this town. Another place to roam as various outside forces prevents him from staying too long in one area. A nuisance to have to pack up his life as extensive as it is. He chose to continue his career by opening up a new photography studio. Something akin to creative greatness that most from his era wouldn’t dream about. Photography had been around 60 plus years by the time his life originally ended. He never looked at camerawork quite the same as the years went on. What would a photography major think?
He found it mesmerizing to play pretend. Almost a penchant for theatrics in his day, he walked into one of the night classes that first time as if he belonged. No sense of displacement followed the dark haired young man. Young for an insurmountable length of time; he still found it ironic out on campus after hours in a place called Sunnydale.
With camera around his neck, dark eyes flickering across some late night owls, he focused on a pair of girls who seemed to notice him perched alone on a bench. A few smiles and quick glances gauged his interest. If he truly had been interested in blowing his cover he would have decided on both. For now he took the easy path giving attention to the notebook in his hand, scribbling notes on them for potential later. @awalkoflife // closed starter

WILLOW: Oh, hey, I have a name on my jacket. (takes off jacket to look) Harris. XANDER: Harris? That's my last name. Maybe I have a brother and you go out with him. (Willow looking uncertain) Or maybe you go out with me. WILLOW: Well, we did wake up all snuggly-wuggly. (walks closer to him) Maybe you're my boyfriend. XANDER: Either that, or I got one pissed-off brother out there somewhere. (both smile)

Bottle episodes! That's another concept that doesn't work the way you'd expect in Doctor Who.
Wild Blue Yonder feels like a bottle episode, right? It's almost entirely set on a single spaceship. It has barely any additional cast members other than the two leads. If this was an episode of Star Trek, it would be a bottle episode for sure.
And yet!
The key thing about bottle episodes is that they save money by minimising the need for extra resources. This means using the sets you've got, rather than building new ones.
Wild Blue Yonder's spaceship required loads of new sets to be built. It may be only one spaceship, but it's a LOT of different rooms.
I'm being pedantic here, of course. I wouldn't correct anyone who said "this is such a great bottle episode" because I know what they mean. It does feel like a bottle episode, even if it technically isn't one.
Where I do feel people get it wrong is when they assume the episode's cheap. This was clearly a very expensive episode - it really wouldn't have saved much money.
It's hard for Doctor Who to save money, because it doesn't have many standing sets. Star Trek has its spaceships. Buffy had the Summers' house. Doctor Who has ... the Tardis. And when we've had episodes set entirely in the Tardis, we've had loads of new rooms built for it.
The closest Doctor Who gets to bottle episodes, then, are stories that minimise the guest cast AND locations. Such as one of my favourite Jodie Whittaker episodes, Eve of the Daleks. Set entirely in a warehouse, with only two major guest characters.
More mind-blowing is this:
In 2008, we had the episodes Midnight and Turn Left back-to-back. One of these was designed to save money, the other was very expensive. Can you guess which is which?
The cheap one's the episode that reuses loads of existing CGI, and has very few guest characters appear in more than one or two scenes each.
Midnight feels like a bottle episode, but had a big cast required for the entire shoot.

PRELIMS/ROUND ONE - 6/63
PROPAGANDA:
Spuffy:
I hate this shit. Spike was better when he was a reoccurring character, who would guest star in a few episodes, be really funny and almost win and then get his ass kicked by Buffy. The 'got chipped' arc was fine, I guess but I think it was the downfall of Spike as a fun character. Plus, Spuffy started as untenable levels of toxic (to me). The 'Spike gets a soul' arc was when I just started loathing Spuffy. Spuffy has so many fans too, it's so popular but I liked Spike better before he had character growth! Spuffy fans fight me in a Denny's parking lot. I'm hiding in the dumpster and I'm ready.
Rika/Mr. Terada:
Listen I absolutely love Cardcaptor Sakura BUT this ship is just so gross. Like I get it's supposed to symbolize innocence or whatever BUT SHES A FIFTH GRADER AND HES THE TEACHER. Reading it just made me cringe. HE PROPOSES TO A FIFTH GRADER AND THEY GO ON A DATE. nope nope nope nope just no. makes me so uncomfortable

Despite the fact she dies about two-thirds of the way through, Season 5 is the only season of Buffy in which Joyce Summers appears in or is talked about in every single episode.
(I mean, the wiki claims she isn’t mentioned in S5E06, for some reason, but that’s obviously wrong: Buffy talks about her Mom being sick throughout the episode and this is the reason she gives her friends for moving back home.  That said, it’s definitely interesting -- and presumably deliberate -- that the first episode of the season in which Buffy’s mother doesn’t appear on screen, and the only such episode before her death, is the one called Family.)
More generally, of course, Joyce is pretty much unique on the show in the way that her death doesn't stop her being talked about and doesn't stop her mattering to the narrative.
As well as her mentions throughout the last third of Season 5, she's also talked about in over a dozen later episodes: from Season 6's Bargaining right up to Season 7's Lies My Parents Told Me.  And while Joyce stays dead, Kristine Sutherland returns to guest star in three episodes.  The show doesn't want to let Buffy -- or the audience -- forget about her mother.
Compare this to the way the show treats Jenny Calendar (a couple of passing mentions and a cameo by the First Evil in the first half of Season 3, then nothing), or Kendra (one throwaway reference in S3E03 to explain why Faith is a Slayer, then nothing) or Larry (one passing reference in S6E09 to the fact he was gay, never any sign that people are sad he died) or Jesse (Willow and Xander’s best friend who is never mentioned again after he dies in S1E02).  Obviously it’s possible to headcannon this as the characters being too traumatisied by their grief to ever talk about the people they’ve lost -- I know it is, I’ve seen the posts -- but it’s also hard to escape the feeling that the show doesn’t talk about these characters because the writers just don’t care about them.
Of course, it's also true that the Joyce that Buffy remembers is -- one weird retcon in Season 6′s Normal Again that I refuse to accept as a canon aside -- a much more sanitized and sympathetic figure than she often is on screen.  But I don't think that's necessarily a flaw; it seems pretty natural to me that Buffy and Dawn would both want to remember their mother in a positive light, given how important a role she played in their lives before her death.
And while Joyce herself isn't necessarily the most complex or sympathetic or consistently written character, I do feel pretty strongly that Buffy's relationship with her mother is fundamental to understanding who Buffy Summers is as a person: fundamental in a way that isn't true for any other character in the show, except maybe (and only maybe) Dawn. But I should probably save that for another post.

[Article] “EXCLUSIVE: ANTHONY HEAD TALKS MERLIN, SOLD AND HIS £2000 PHONE CALL”
by Luke Connolly for Shadowlocked, first published 10:05 Wednesday 22nd June 2011
(the following is a copy/paste of the article followed by screenshots from the Wayback Machine. The original article is no longer available.)
Anthony Head talks openly about his remarkable career and generous work for charity...
Tumblr media
As one of the most iconic actors ever to emerge from England, Anthony Head really is the definition of a true great. Comedy, drama, live theatre – Head has done it all, bringing his classic style of acting to each and every role. Best known as Rupert Giles in the Joss Whedon vampire classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Head has since diversified into other areas of acting. In recent years, he's guest starred in Doctor Who, found success as the Prime Minister in Little Britain, and at present is portraying Uther in the BBC's smash hit Merlin.
In this intimate interview with Shadowlocked – conducted at the Merlin: The Dragon Tower launch day at Warwick Castle – Anthony Head talks openly about his life, filming with Merlin and his career to date...
Well, while we are here (Merlin launch day), let’s start with this. How’s it all been going?
It’s been going great; very grateful for the production to let me potter over to the other side of the pond; they moved filming dates for me which was great. It’s looking gorgeous, they're now shooting it on a 35 million budget.
Well I think it deserves it considering its success...
Well yes, but these days everything’s shot on digital, thus cutting costs, but I think it loses so much from filming and from acting in general. But yes, I suppose it shows the BBC are 100% behind it, which they should be really. It’s in 183 territories (countries) so it deserves a budget complimentary of this achievement.
They’ve just finished season three in America and, from the viewing figures, they just can’t seem to get enough. On that note, have you been surprised by its success?
Erm, I’m always surprised...you always hope, but you just don’t know. From the very start, it had a good vibe about it, but even when I was offered the part I was concerned that it may limit itself to a young audience only; but the fact that it’s got such a wide demographic has really saved it. In fact, it was with NBC for the first year, and they said – on a number of occasions – that they were genuinely surprised by the numbers it got, especially considering it got little to no advertising or promotion, but it didn’t attract the demographic they were actually hoping for.
Well, duh...it got an older demographic instead of a younger one due to the fact that they showed it in the middle of the summer. Thankfully, Syfy saw the potential and picked it up, and they pitched it just right. It’s – well – one of those shows that has a genuine interest across all spectrums of society; it’s a show that the whole family can watch, with all members getting an honest level of enjoyment from it. A show like that is rare these days.
So many parents sit down and watch shows with their children that they have no interest in – to keep them happy – but there are very few shows that everyone can get into.
Marcus: My twin girls are big fans of the series, and when they started watching it so did their mother and I. I totally agree with what you’re saying, it’s like Doctor Who, you can grow up and watch it, regardless of your age. I think it’s very similar to Buffy really...
Well, it’s not the same writing as Buffy, but it’s got the same vibe. It’s humorous, but at the same time it’s capable of both its dark and somewhat surreal moments...
Marcus: Yes, I know – you are very scary sometimes.
Good – *evil smirk* – I’m glad to hear it...means I’m doing things right haha.
Marcus: You play a great Uther, and it’s a tricky character isn’t it? If you looked at Thomas Mannerie’s Uther, and how he gets off on countless maidens, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot more does there?
Yes, traditionally there is not much about the character Uther, other than the fact that he was a bit of a wino and liked to party. Oh, and he may have been partial to the odd woman or two.
And I’m sure, like any good actor, you researched this in depth for the role?
Haha, oh yes, to play a role well you must experience it for yourself. In all seriousness though, there is not a whole lot to research. I went to see a couple of other actors playing kings, but other than that the research element was fairly limited. For me, assessing the character of Uther, the most important aspect of the role was to make sure I understood his mythology and where he was coming from.
But that’s the point – it was the middle of the dark ages, and he was forever wrestling with his kingdom, holding onto it as best he could; with berserkers on every border. Basically though, he is an old fashioned father, and he’s just holding it together as best he can; whilst in the knowledge that Arthur is going to kick against everything that Uther stood for, and I think that’s what makes it interesting. The fact that he gets it wrong almost everytime – he wasn’t wrong about Mordred though – well that’s just a shame...
I can’t believe it’s been seven years since Buffy left our screens, but I love how you have diversified since. We all know about Little Britain, both a commercial and critical success, but I remember one you did way back...Sold. Unfortunately, that never kicked off – any ideas why?
To be honest, I remember thinking, from my very first read-through and onwards – can they hinge a whole series around estate agents? Well, they did, but that whole concept of them having a fantasy world was, well, a little bit thin...but there you go. I reckon with different circumstances, it could have been great.
Finally, I have to ask. I follow you on Twitter and I couldn’t help but notice a while ago that someone paid just short of £2000 for a 20 minute phone call with yourself...
And, the person who came in second – offering to pay around £1670 – was so eager, we have agreed to do a separate 10 minute conversation with her. It now means that £3670 has been raised for the Mental Health Foundation, so I’m just glad I could help do my bit to raise awareness and support their cause.
So, not to put any pressure on you, but what are you going to talk about? £2000 for 20 mins equates to £200 a minute, and I’m sure you will want to give them their money's worth...
You know, I’ve done it a number of times before, and after the old “wow” “argh” from them, it just kind of runs through. You know me, I could talk for England! It’s actually quite nice, and it’s for a good cause – so everybody wins, right?
Special thanks to Shadowlocked writer Marcus Pullen for his help in conducting this interview.

Continuing the series on actors within the horror genre who have written books is this next entry on those who have ventured into cooking. Among this group of actors-turned-authors who have shared their passion for cooking is horror-film icon Vincent Price, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, aka, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Machete star Danny Trejo. VINCENT PRICE Starting this list is horror icon, Vincent Price, who starred in many horror classics including House on Haunted Hill, The Fly, Witchfinders General, The Abominable Dr. Phibes and The Last Man on Earth. Besides his prolific work as an actor, Mr. Price was also a connoisseur of fine art and gourmet dining. Mr. Price was also a prolific writer as well, a few of which were cookbooks. Mr. Price's first cookbook was A Treasury of Great Recipes, followed by Come Into the Kitchen, and Cooking Price-Wise. All of them showcase Mr. Price's favorite recipes that he compiled with his wife and daughter, who also shared a love of good food. The featured video below shows one of Mr. Price's favorite dishes that he loves to serve to both family and guests. [video width="1440" height="1080" mp4="https://horrortree.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Y2Mate.is-Vincent-Price-Cooking-Lesson-Roast-Pork-With-Prunes-QlsNd7sjQxc-1080p-1659003497654.mp4"][/video]   SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR Sarah Michelle Gellar is best known for her role as the titular character in Joss Whedon's television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was itself a remake of the 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson. Besides her popular portrayal of the vampire-slaying Buffy Summers, Sarah has also played the villainous Kathryn Merteuill in Cruel Intentions and Daphne Blake in the live-action Scooby-Doo movie. It was in the latter that she starred alongside her future husband, Freddie Prinze, Jr. Besides acting, Mrs. Gellar has shown both a passion and talent for cooking. In her book Stirring Up Fun with Food Sarah has compiled several recipes that she created for her kids to inspire both a healthy love of cooking, as well as an appreciation for eating healthy, for all children. In the video below Sarah shares 3 simple recipes for creating healthy snacks. Senor Trejo has starred in such films as Machete/Machete Kills, Predators, Rob Zombies Halloween, and Dead in Tombstone to name but a few of his many films. Besides starring in many popular action and horror films, Danny has written books as well. Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood details his journey from being on the wrong side of the law, to his lucky break in the movies, and how he has used his unique experience to help others who likewise needed a second chance.  In Trejo's Tacos: Recipes and Stories from L.A. , Danny speaks of something else he's passionate about: food. Trejo's Taco's features some of the actor's favorite recipes taken directly from the restaurant chain he owns in Los Angeles. The video below shows a few examples of the kind of recipes that you can find in his cookbook. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6owykbJ2htw That's it for now. May everyone have a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year! Oh...and Bone Appetite!

Corey and Oats in..
Nightmare on Carnaby Street.
NOTE: This is a special Corey and Oats adventure which is a rock music themed horror comedy one with a supernatural slasher element to it, it is a nod to Scooby Doo and Guess Who with this story’s guest stars being The Rolling Stones (the surviving members anyway). Also features nods to slasher movies and horror in general including the names of the women in one scene (e.g Buffy being named after the character Buffy Summers, Angela being named after Angela Franklin and/or Angela Baker, Clarice is named after Clarice from Silence of the Lambs) and nods to Stones songs.
Characters:
Corey: A Covid microbe who is best friends with Oatsie the horse, he is a former villain from Microbe City who learns a lot about the world through adventures he goes on with his friend and he is fiercely protective of his friends.
Oats: Oats or ‘Oatsie’ is an adorable equine that loves all things pink and pretty, he’s always in a positive mood and loves to dance, he has a fondness for cookies and pastries and he loves to wear dresses and dresses in drag, he tends to be very shy and timid but is very caring and lovable especially with those he loves.
Mel: Melanie ‘Mel’ Sanders is a superpowered anthro koala who they live with at Nile Road, she can shapeshift and also is super-strong.
The Rolling Stones: A band that needs no introduction, as part of the classic rock universe they get up to adventures of their own including ones where they battle demons, this version of the band has numerous supernatural connections and abilities…Keith can sense when demons or monsters or other supernatural beings are near and is psychic and also can survive pretty much anything (as demonstrated when Jack Slash tries to slaughter him with his powers), Ronnie can create sound based energy spells, and Mick can not only see Charlie Watts’s spirit but also can speak to him and other ghosts (and also can transform himself into different supernatural versions of himself depending on the scenario)
Jack Slash: A slasher style villain that was portrayed by Mick in a series of in-universe horror movies, he is a half-monster musician who was nearly burned alive by angry parents because they thought his work was satanic, he made a deal with dark supernatural forces and became who he is today to get revenge on them. His name is a play on words of Jumpin Jack Flash. He is depicted as looking like a possessed/dark version of Mick.
Angie: One of the girls that is one of the survivors in the ‘Jack Slash’ franchise…she is portrayed as a socially awkward sort who comes out of her shell to save her friends from Jack’s demonic minions. Named after the song of the same name.
Clarice: The scientific genius of the survivor group. Named after Clarice from Silence of the Lambs.
Bianca: The fashionista, named after Bianca Jagger.
Buffy: The rebellious badass of the survivor group, named after Buffy Summers.
Ruby: The misfit of the group who in the first ‘Jack Slash’ is revealed to be psychic, she is named after Ruby Tuesday and also a little bit inspired by Ruby from ‘The Hills Have Eyes’.
Angela: The reclusive goth of the survivors who is Lydia Deetz inspired, she gets her name from Angela Baker from Sleepaway Camp and Angela Franklin from Night of the Demons.
Horror movies are like rollercoasters, they have ups and downs but also have another aspect in common…they are basically like confronting death without having to die yourself and one genre of horror that seems to have the most fans is the slasher genre, whether or not you are a horror fan, you cannot deny that seeing a man getting chopped up by a chainsaw wielding mad-man is never going to get around. Icons like Jason, Leatherface, Freddy and Chucky are the rockstars of the horror world. Our two heroes Corey and Oats were in their house at Nile Road when Mel heard that there was a special mission that had been chosen just for them.
They were watching In Search Of Darkness II which was a documentary about 80’s horror movies and they were really getting into it and learning a lot about horror. ‘We really must check those movies out.’ ‘ Yeah, they sound awesome.’ Mel entered the room. ‘Boys, we’ve got another case and another adventure.’ ‘Awesome, what kind?’ ‘There have been a lot of mysterious deaths and this looks like a job for you two.’
“Excellent, come on. Let’s go.”
“How are we going to do that?”
Oats galloped into the bedroom and got something out of the bed box, something that resembled a Spirit Halloween sticker sheet, he unraveled the sticker sheet which contorted into a path which lead to a path-way which looked like it belonged to a cursed garden center as they followed the path-way and arrived in London. Corey and Oats looked over and saw what appeared to be a pair of dead bodies near the music studio that was across the street, one dead body had been impaled on a guitar stand and another had a mark on their neck which indicated that someone had tried to slit their throat.
“This has all the markings of a slasher.”
‘Yeah, only instead of dumb teenagers being stalked by a killer with a hook hand, it’s a microbe and a horse.’ ‘Yeah, we’re much better protagonists than your typical slasher protagonists.’ ‘Come on, let’s go and see if we can figure out the killer’s plan.’ The duo headed through down-town, noticing all the masked dancers that popped up and also noticing the dead bodies on the side of the road, that’s where they saw a demonic creature that looked like a monstrous leopard-man, the leopard-man looked like it was going to attack them but before he could do that…that’s when he was sent flying onto the other side of the road by a bus.
“That was a close one.”
“Yeah, we almost got attacked.”
The bus stopped and Corey examined the bus and instantly recognized the bus because of the logo which was of a pair of lips and a large tongue…’The Rolling Stones.’ ‘Yeah, that’s their bus…wonder what they are doing here.’ The door of the bus opened and Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards stepped out. ‘This is the right location. But I don’t see our shop anywhere.’ ‘Keith, are you sure you got the right address?’
“Now you know I wouldn’t mess this up on purpose.”
“You have a point there, but we’re kind of lost…when you think about it.”
‘Can we help you?’ Oats asked as he trotted over to them. ‘That would be nice of you, thank you.’ He used some magic to help fix the tire that had gone flat due to the crash from earlier that they witnessed. ‘No problem, my name is Oatsie. I know who you guys are. You’re Mick, Keith, and Ronnie from the Rolling Stones. My mommy loves your music. Oh dear, there I go again.’ ‘Aaaaw, you’re oddly adorable.’
“We’re here to solve a case.”
“Same…”
“There have been a slew of deaths in this part of town and the reports all say it’s connected to this killer named Jack Slash. Do you guys know of him?”
‘Well yes, we do as a matter of fact.’ Mick added. ‘Jack Slash was a serial killer/horror character I created and played as in several movies in the monster world. He has now become a real living killer out there using his dark powers to go after people who deemed his music to be Satanic.’ ‘Something tells me this guy would get along with Jason and Freddy.’ A scene materialized in front of Corey and Oats along with Mel, the scene showed a rockstar named Jack Slash at a concert and it also showed a group of parental groups that disapproved of Jack’s music.
The scene showed Jack making a pact with a dark supernatural entity who granted him powers, as it showed him nearly being burned by the angry parents. ‘The parent groups deemed Jack’s music to be evil and Satanic and they thought something ought to be done about him, they thought Jack was no good. And upon nearly being burned alive…he vowed revenge.’ ‘Typical slasher villain behavior.’ Mick explained the origin of the character and also suggested that the group stick together as opposed to splitting up.
Corey and Oats nodded as they helped Mick, Keith and Ronnie navigate through the city before stopping at the store that they owned. That’s where they saw a demonic figure, Corey noticed the demonic figure was holding a guitar, looking like a twisted nightmare version of Mick if Mick was possessed by Sammi Curr, he rolled out of the way as dark blasts of lightning were shot off the guitar…’That’s him, that’s Jack!’. Jack Slash tried to attack the duo but Oats used some magic to deflect the dark powers.
In addition to this, Jack attempted to get at Mel but Corey got in the way. Jack cackled madly as a group of women named Angela, Buffy, Angie, Ruby, Clarice, Bianca, and Jamie attempted to fight him off and he swiped at Corey. Corey of course wasn’t afraid as he fought off the shadow demons that were swooping around him.
The group raced through the city as Jack used his powers to hypnotize a group of people and make them into half-demonic beings with piercing yellowish eyes. Corey had been to England before but even he had to admit it was pretty awesome to fight demons with the most iconic rock band ever. Mick of course used his agility to dodge several dark energy blasts that Jack was shooting out from his fingers and his guitar.
Jack looked over at Keith and attempted to take him out, striking him with his long sharp fingernails in hopes of scratching him or getting him wounded but Keith’s wounds healed up all by themselves, Keith got up and played a few blasts of his guitar. ‘I cannot be killed, it’s a natural fact.’ Ronnie looked over as Charlie’s ghost materialized and helped out with the battle, as they sensed the presence of other supernatural beings.
As they did Corey made a microphone and guitar manifest in front of him and he performed a song as they raced through the city, dodging Jack’s attacks and fighting off demons. Mick picked up a microphone and joined in.
‘Fallen angels into the street
It's an empty dance
And so incomplete
The hallow voices which spread a cry
For the devil's night
There's a reason why
You tried before, but you can't buy a clue
No matter what you do
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire
For the wasted lives’
The group ran all over and eventually decided to fight together and performed a selection of song spells, the group of female survivors even joined in, providing backup vocals as the song was being played and Oats and Corey rocked out together with the band.
‘And there's no way you can fight, just show some respect, and try to survive!
On the darkest side!
Neon shadows that point the way, never lead you out, it's a game they play
The madness comes and the madness goes
It's a simple world
But it's all they know
You try to fix it but there's nothing you can do
You just gotta see it through
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire
For the wasted lives.’
Oats galloped around, performing moves that were like Mick’s as he showed just how talented he was as a singer, and Corey handled several of the demons as Mel used her powers to cast a spell to protect herself and to protect them from the demons. However, one demon reached for Angie and dove down her throat, possessing her in the process. Angela and Buffy used their combined skills to fight off the demons as a few masked dancers circled around Bianca and Clarice. Oats performed a few spinning moves and kicks with his ballet moves, he packed quite a punch as he proved how powerful he could be. Mel transformed into a half-angel version of herself and performed some holy magic that weakened some of the demons.
A couple of gruesome demons were swarming the group and people were being transformed and corrupted by Jack’s magic, with some demon forms that looked to be very much in the category of Body Horror, one of the transformed victims had spikes growing out of his shoulder blades, one had a few lesions on their back, and a couple even had a mouth of teeth that looked like they belonged to a deep sea fish.
‘And there's no way you can fight, just show some respect, and try to survive!
On the darkest side!
In this city, you give and they take
You reach the limit, you bend, and then you break
And there's no escape!
There's no escape!
NO!
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire
For the wasted lives
And there's no way you can fight, just show some respect, and try to survive!
On the darkest side!
The darkest side of the night
Burns like a fire
For the wasted lives
And there's no way you can fight, just show some respect, and try to survive!
On the darkest side!’
They managed to fight off the demons but before they could get to Jack, Jack teleported away and reappeared backstage in the band’s dressing room, Corey and Oats hurried over to help Mick..’I should have told Keith to remember the combination to unlock the door.’ ‘Sorry about that..I was too busy thinking of what might happen to us if this was to ever happen.’ ‘Got anything we could use to break it down?’ ‘Well..i’ve got this guitar. It’s one of my prized possessions, but I don’t mind it being used in this situation.’
Corey snatched a guitar off the wall and tossed it to Mick, who began hacking through the front of the door with the guitar, which formed a large hole in the middle of it, he peered his head through and exclaimed….’Heeeeeeeeeeere’s Mick! What? I’ve always wanted to do that.’ Mick looked over at Jack and the two of them had a guitar magic battle. For a while it seemed that Mick was winning up until Jack decided to try and gain an unfair advantage by possessing him…Mick panicked for a little bit before turning into a couple of different monster variants of himself including a version that was a werecat that looked like the one from the Michael Jackson video Thriller. Mick didn’t get corrupted entirely though as he managed to perform one song spell that eventually broke him free of the possession.
Oats sighed with relief…for a couple of seconds back there he was afraid Mick had turned evil, which luckily wasn’t the case. Thinking quickly, he played a song on the guitar which sent Jack flying onto a backdrop which opened up to reveal a pit of flames. Jack levitated for a while before ultimately landing on the pit and bursting into flames as a couple of blasts from Corey’s guitar finished him off but before he burst into flames and exploded, he gave a tremendous horrifying roar and a shout of…’Rock n roll never dies and never shall I. I will be back again, you can count on that. Because to me, killing is a gas. I am Jumpin Jack Slash, and I slash, slash, slash.’
“Whew…that was quite the ending.”
“Do you think we’ll see the last of him?”
‘Well, he’s a slasher villain…he’s bound to come back to life eventually. You know how slasher villains are, they always come back for me.’ ‘And when he does we’ll be ready.’ ‘Indeed we will.’ Corey looked over at Mick for a minute. ‘Are you alright? Jack possessed you for a while back there and I thought you were corrupted by his dark powers.’ ‘I am quite alright, by the way, you guys were really helpful, thank you for helping us solve this case.’
“No problem.”
‘Hey Oats, did you and Corey ever consider becoming musicians? Because you have some amazing skills.’ ‘Thanks for the offer, Keith. But we are already musicians, it’s just we have our band at home. And we’re very supportive of them.’
Oats whinnied as he hugged Mick and danced with him for a bit, doing his own equine spin on his signature moves. Corey decided it would be a good idea to pick up a souvenir and that’s when he went to the Rolling Stones shop and bought himself and Oats and Mel some special Stones merchandise.
“That sure was one rocking adventure.”
“That most certainly is true.”
‘I have a feeling we’ll meet again…and in more places than one.’ ‘Yeah you’re right.’ ‘But for now, let’s go home. Come on, let’s go.’ Corey, Mel and Oats said goodbye to their musician friends as they hopped aboard their own floating tour bus and they flew all the way from London to back home in Nile Road. When they arrived at Nile Road, Corey went into the room he and Oats slept in and put some of the things he had brought for himself and his friends on display. Throughout the afternoon and evening they partied and had fun.
They had some delicious food for dinner, and they had a wonderful night…they told all of the other microbes about the adventure and Corey explained everything. Trump Cat had just woken up from his nap when he heard the music, but he woke up and decided to join in. After celebrating all night, they decided to have a bit more fun all by themselves and had their own rock concert. When it was time for bed, they all snuggled up and had sweet dreams as their bed contorted into a tour bus and they dreamed about being rockstars in their own band, a band called ‘Oatsie and the Microbes’.
And thus with that our latest adventure comes to an end, but stay tuned for more…stay tuned for the 2022 Halloween spookactular episode, Oats and the Unicorn Princess, The Unicorn With The Sweetest Heart, and Oats’s Magical Flower Garden. And many more adventures to come.

Why do you hate season 5? Would love to hear your thoughts!
hey!
season 5 has a lot of things conspiring against it.
1) an Evil Science Hates Good Monsters villain has never worked in any supernatural show that I know of. it's the worst season of buffy, and it's definitely one of the worst seasons of teen wolf, too. the augustine institute or whatever it's called is so far from breaking that trend that it's laughable. everything they do is so clearly skeevy and evil, and they go the totally inconceivably insane direction of retroactively involving the Gilberts in it. yep, that's right, Elena Gilbert's Sainted Parents are not just vampire hunters in the respectable ranks of Alaric and the Buffster herself, but vampire experimenters, which is so unbelievably crazy as a character choice. this is Elena's DAD we're talking about. the man who SACRFICED HIMSELF FOR HER, whose ethic is the one that Elena explicitly imitates throughout the show. you want to make him edgy complicated gray morality??? wHy?!?!?!? it just makes the story fit together Worse
2) Enzo, bless his heart, is introduced, and then they do not know what the Heck to do with him. I love him in season 7 or 8 or whatever (those seasons have bled together for me), but in season 5 he is *darren criss voice* such a spare.
3) Katherine's arc this season is just not my favorite. the body-snatching in particular I think is frustrating for the viewer. we know this isn't going to be permanent. it's just dragging out Katherine's death and undermining all her growth.
4) I don't remember the Originals guest stars and crossovers being particularly well utilized this season. not a fan of the Klaroline hookup.
5) Silas and his two girlfriends bore me
6) The Travelers are just uncomfortably racist
7) and the big one: I do not believe for one minute that Damon would have taken a hot minute away from playing house with Elena during the best summer of their lives to go murder somebody he never met. it's not even primarily about how much he loves her - although that's PLENTY to make his actions incoherent all on its own - but I don't even buy that Damon would visit the sins of the father onto the sons at all. I just don't!!! buy it!! and the entire seasons's plot with him and Elena hinges on this one absolutely horrible character choice, all the back and forth and "you have to let me go" and "we're not good for each other" and "well then stop loving me / I can't" of it all is because Damon snuck off in the middle of their three month long makeout-sesh to go commit a coldblooded murder, which I cannot for one moment imagine him doing. Damon does what he has to do, or he does what seems like a good idea at the time. even if he HASN'T grown enough in goodness to realize that murdering to make yourself feel better is bad, he's just too SMART to risk screwing up his whole life! and yes, he WOULDN'T want to put Elena through any more pain regarding him and his choices! he said "what if there were no bumps" and he MEANT IT, damn it
highlights? Stefan with amnesia is kind of fun. the finale is good. the no magic-spell around the town is utilized to tremendous effect later. there's like? four good delena scenes?? the kiss in the doorway in the beginning of the season, the forehead kiss in the "you have to let me go" scene, the hug right before Katherine takes over Elena's body, and the aforementioned finale
but otherwise, it's no good. I didn't even buy the dvds.

Tumblr media
Ok here is the thing about spuffy / fuffy is that spuffy is married and faith comes over regularly for threesomes but also finds their Old Married Energy very lame but also very hot to guest star in and also she roasts them constantly .... I am sending them to superhell but so affectionately <333333 mostly this ship is about me wanting buffy summers to have everything she has ever wanted and deserved and that is her two hot formerly evil leather wearing shadow selves !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it is 50% them having unimaginably kinky sex and 50% them having no brain cells and going out partying and spike and faith getting into bar fights which Buffy pretends to be annoyed about but then she also jumps into the bar fights

I got out my DVDs for this rewatch (that’s not actually a big deal. I only have season 3 on DVD. 😂) so let’s get to it.
I forgot they did a cold open for this episode!
I know it’s for ambiance but man does Angel have a lot of candles displayed. Probably too ‘mainstream’ for his taste but the thought of Angel furtively going to a Bath and Bodyworks in the mall during their semi-annual sale and just buying out their whole candle selection gives me the purest joy. Let’s be real though, Angel would shop at some boutique/hole in the wall owned by a wizened old character with a twinkle in their eye and everything marked up 20%. Or it would be a steel and glass monstrosity with a collection labeled Candles for Men. That’s the range.
Back to the enormous fire hazard that this scene is -
Wait. Does fire burn on stone?
Shout out to the stunt doubles.
I think that Angel getting food for Buffy for a sort of alfresco picnic while training is really sweet, actually. Also, can't miss the opportunity for both carbs and phallic symbolism ala bread.
Everyone is so embarrassingly horny in this moment. I'd say get a room except they're in a whole giant mansion.
Always remember the bread! What did Angel do with the food after Buffy fled? Fed the no-doubt cursed pigeons that live in Sunnydale.
Thanks for the workout (insert stereotypical dirty laugh).
Oh yes, the awkward 'let's talk about your birthday without mentioning the last birthday you had at all because it's horrifying' chitchat. God, the anxiety Angel is radiating here and Buffy trying to smooth it over. You can't unfrost that trauma cake!
Angel, you utter dork. You're lucky Buffy finds you pretty. Very powerful himbo energy here. And it's nice to see some light-hearted flirting/banter between them.
How do you know when someone's aura's dirty? Buffy is only asking the reasonable questions everyone has.
Do you hear yourself, Giles. "I'm aware of your distaste in studying vibratory stones..." I can't imagine what that section of the Slayer handbook looks like. Are there pull-out charts?
Faith being conveniently gone for this episode. Boo, hiss.
That workout really did a number on Buffy. I see what you're doing with those crystals.
One of the sad parts of rewatching Buffy is that you just don't have the first time discovery feels of watching it - that magic is gone, but even though I know why Buffy's wobbling in her fight, the reveal is still upsetting. Thinking about how in Season 5, when she does get staked, just as she's questioning her powers - and here, where she's losing them.
Also, obvious observation is obvious - the sexual violence imagery is really, really blatant here - with the vampire crouched over her with the stake aimed toward her heart, just as she playfully staked Angel earlier in a more romantically set scene.
AND THEN THE THEME KICKS IN. Like, damn! Three minutes and you can pretty much tell what the plot is going to be - Buffy and Angel's UST is getting out of hand, Buffy's lone Rangering it, and something is wrong with her. And it's her birthday.
And Buffy's resourcefulness saves the day.
Perhaps you shouldn't be throwing knives in the library, Buffy.
Did they do a geography lesson on Cuernavaca? It's also just fun to say. Like La Cienega. Brief moment to ponder yet again about a show set in Southern California, actually shot in Southern California, with the huge Latine population we have and the Spanish-influenced names and culture and - getting sidetracked by all this casual 90s racism.
"We do it every year for my birthday," except your seventeenth, presumably because of the murderous ex-boyfriend stalking the town you live in and all your loved ones. [Or, he did take her and it was not shown on screen!] Sometimes I wonder if the continuity editors just go, you know, I'm going to let this one go for the 'emotion' and not just so years later, a Virgo with a deep-seated need to obsess over throwaway details will go into a thought spiral to make it make sense.
I think this is also the last time Hank Summers was spoken of with any real affection because then he was Deadbeat Dad for the remainder of the show. Oh, look. The Scoobies are surprised about the traditional birthday ice show that I'm going to nitpick about forever.
Oz is so supportive, and then the clunker of a 'deep' line of ice being cool because it's water then it's not. I do like the Whedonesque school of dialogue, but sometimes you gotta reel it back. I remember the dialogue on Dawson's Creek was getting pinged for the teenagers talking like grad students.
Quiet reflection. Oh you poor girl, you have no idea.
Quarterly projections - is a convincing filler phrase for when you don't need to know what the job is, because it's boring but sounds vaguely official. What does Hank actually do? Who cares! He's an asshole.
Sunnydale Arms, because of course, Sunnydale has a broken down abandoned murder hotel.
Quentin Travers. Boo. Hiss.
The scary music is very scary. Also one of the Council flunkies looks like a very young Vincent D'Onofrio.
This scene with them in the library is so bittersweet because Buffy is fishing for Giles's attention as a father figure substitute ("very sophisticated people go!" breaks my heart) and he pointedly is rejecting this for training talk.
Look for the flaw at its center. THE FLAW IS YOU GILES. YOU YOU YOU.
it's just so terrible, this scene because of how methodical and clinical it plays out. And Buffy is just not there, and then Giles smiles like nothing has happened.
Buffy makes it through another night - next day (another reason why this trial is so horrifying is that it takes place over several days - it's not on Buffy's birthday but leading up to it, so the idea of her getting weaker and weaker and unable to fight to make it to 18 in the first place) and it's time for the Cordelia has had enough of toxic masculinity scene!
Also, Willow blithely ignoring a person's feelings and treating Amy as just a rat is played for laughs and cuteness, but yeah...you can't treat people like puppets or rats [law and order sound]
I love Cordelia's coat. And also, while it does suck that she stood him up, he's not entitled to her time or attention and certainly not to threaten her. Go, Cordy! Fight like a girl! Yes! Pummel him into the hallway.
I also love Willow's outfit here because I think the colors are so complementary and warm and it's a cute outfit. Okay, the knit wooly hat is a bit too Blossom-esque, but whatever.
Buffy is tiny, we all know this, but I do think they purposefully dressed her in larger than her size coats in this episode to make her look even more tiny and vulnerable.
Giles is TOO BLASE for this scene also shut your mouth about throwing knives like a girl
"It's an archaic exercise in cruelty." SO WHY DID YOU GO ALONG WITH IT, BRAIN TRUST. (I am going to be very mean to Giles this whole rewatch, deal with it.)
"But I'm the one in the thick of it." No, you're not. You are going to be adjacent to it, at best.
Hey it's that guy!
Okay, in better lighting, flunkie does not look like Vincent D'Onofrio.
It's impossible to pin down one type of Vampire in the Whedonverse, except for the delineation between Grunt Bait Vampires, and Special Guest Star/Master vampires, but Kralik is the only other example of a vampire with mental illness besides Drusilla, yet he's medicated. Makes me wonder how exactly they got Kralik...he was a monster before he was a vampire, but who vamped him? I don't put it past the Watchers to have vampires created for this purpose.
Curse against lawyers!
Xander and Oz bonding over comic books is so fun. I regret they didn't really get closer until after Xander and Willow cheated because Oz was the one male friend Xander had.
They mentioned her birthday! Thinking about Buffy's love of poetry later on, this is a nice little detail, and it *is* a thoughtful, sweet gift. Also those poems: horny. Oh yes, maybe in a restrained way, but Elizabeth Barrett Browning knew what was up.
The Buffy and Angel relationship in season three is full of these starts and stops that I can see why and agree with others about how it's frustrating on a number of levels. They know why they can't be together, but they still try to find a common ground because they want to need the other one. They still have their identities to figure out - Buffy as the slayer and a young adult, Angel as a person, separate from Buffy and being Buffy's ex sort of maybe.
But this conversation in Helpless is genuinely sweet and a glimpse at what a normal couple at the crossroads would talk about - I think I'm also being soft on this because the other Important Male Figure in Buffy's life in this episode lets her down so spectacularly bad, that Angel being supportive and kind in his awkward way is a nice respite. It's good to be away from the angst and the horror that their relationship has had.
And the self-aware puncturing of the Moment between them is something Buffy does very well. "Taken literally, incredibly gross - I was just thinking that too". Look, it's cute and soft and I will allow it.
The horror of this episode (and there are so many) is that we have to watch Buffy become the helpless blonde in a slasher flick who is being chased by the monsters and she can't do anything about it - that she has to be rescued or die. That the real world with men catcalling and bystanders who ignore women's cries of distress is far scarier than the literal demons that inhabit the town - and Buffy brokenly saying she can't just be a person, she can't be helpless like that [like women are, still, today] is a gut punch. It's uncomfortable and unhappy because Buffy is supposed to be the hero, the [sigh] strong female lead who can kick ass and take names, and this episode is all about finding who Buffy is, separate from her super powers. Also an exercise in emotional torture, but must be Tuesday.
The physicality - the weakness that both Buffy and Giles display in this scene is so, so good. The way Buffy's hand trembles toward the needle in the case and the dawning realization of what Giles has done, has chosen to do - and he bloodlessly tells her what the Cruciamentum is.
Her tiny little "Liar."
GOD WHY DIDN'T SHE GET AN EMMY (rhetorical we all know genre tv only matters if it was Game of Rapey Thrones)
"You will be safe now, I promise you." LIAR.
Another puncturing a heavy moment - Cordelia as cavalry - I love it. Cordelia taking the most obvious approach to the situation - 'oh Buffy might have lost her memory, well he's Giles,'
I can't believe they robbed us of a conversation in the car scene with Cordy and Buffy.
Kralik had to have found a polaroid camera and a metallic sharpie for this whole scenario -- OH I KNOW WHO HE REMINDS ME OF. The Night Stalker and any number of serial killers that terrorized SoCal. Is the show being self-aware of the problem with mothers and parents in general?
Probably a glib accident.
I don't have much to say about the part where Buffy hunts Kralik because it's so masterfully done with the atmosphere and music.
Nice of Giles's backbone to enter the chat now.
This is not business. Ooo.
Buffy's "I thought I killed a man" emo overalls!
Like it's shadowy, but there's still enough light to see facial expressions. Lighting guy, I salute you.
Little red riding hood metaphor. Oh, that's so her stunt double.
CREEPY SEXUAL VIOLENCE REARS ITS DEFORMED HEAD AGAIN
Jump stair scare. I remember the first time I saw it, I jolted in the living room.
Serial Killer Shit. Why are vampires such drama queens?
THAT'S RIGHT, BUFFY DID THAT
The ending scene in the library is cathartic in that Buffy gets to stand up for herself finally, and recognizes what Giles gives up by helping her, delayed as it was, also there's the feeling of hate punching Quentin Travers via your eyes.
Still don't think she should have forgiven Giles so easily, but we don't get to see a lot of aftercare for Buffy when she gets hurt, and it is a very tender scene.
The Scoobies are being way too upbeat if they knew about the fact that Giles poisoned Buffy, which is why I'm assuming she told a very abbreviated version of events ending with Buffy killed the bad guy and Giles got fired, oops.
Xander's big strong man comment and then looking immediately to Willow to open the jar and not Oz...
I could watch this episode again with episode commentary from David Fury, but another day.

Where Are All of the Mothers in Fantasy Fiction?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This is a guest post from Gabriela Houston, the London-based Polish author of Second Bell, a Slavic fantasy debut described as a cross between His Dark Materials and The Bear and the Nightingale. You can find out more about the book here.
Historically speaking, the fantasy genre has a thorny relationship with motherhood. Technically, it’s acknowledged that the protagonists must have sprung from somewhere. But it is often solely their paternity that is seen as important—while the mothers, if mentioned at all, are usually either dead of irrelevant: unmentioned or languishing in a convent somewhere.  If the mothers (or stepmothers: a different type of a mother-figure) persist in being alive into their children’s adulthood they are most often presented as an obstacle to their child’s self-actualisation/quest, or, as is most common with the stepmother archetype, present an actual threat to the protagonist.
Since mainstream fantasy as a genre was Eurocentric, this is a trend that is very much connected to the patriarchal structures persisting throughout Europe for most of recorded history.  King Arthur, whose legend was first written down in the 12th Century by Geoffrey of Monmouth, had a mother, of course, but her only real importance was in how her beauty drew the eye of Uther Pendragon, who raped her, conceiving Arthur. Since Uther ended up marrying Arthur’s mother, Igraine, story-wise all was considered to be well, and, her role in birthing the future king done, Igraine became an irrelevance, just as any feelings and thoughts she might have had on her second husband. All we know is she was beautiful, chaste and gave birth to the real protagonist of the story.
The courtly love conventions forming the basis of many medieval European legends have seeped into the genre of fantasy, especially high fantasy, and have shaped the way in which female protagonists are related to. In most “traditional” fantasy, motherhood was seen as nearly opposite to personhood. A female character’s value centred squarely on her attractiveness to the male protagonist, meaning that the moment she aged/became a mother, she ceased to hold that particular form of attention that comes from extreme youth and innocence. Motherhood is seen as the end of a female character’s journey. The experiences, shifting relationships and emotions linked to motherhood are not seen as interesting enough to garner any space at all.
In The Lord of The Rings, we are faced with a whole cast of missing mothers. Moreover their absence is not noted as particularly important or carrying any emotional load. Aragorn, son of Arathorn, clearly had a mother, but when his father died he was shipped off to live with the elves. We neither know, nor are expected to care about what his mother thought on the subject. Then, of course, he falls for the elven maiden Arwen, whose mother, we’re told (as an aside) had the good sense to disappear from the scene by sailing beyond the sea before the plot of LOTR begins. Frodo Baggins’ mother helpfully died before he was born and Bilbo Baggins has the rare privilege of having a named mother, Belladonna Took, who, however, is quite dead by the time The Hobbit begins, and is referenced only as a link between Bilbo and the adventurous Took clan. She was a Took and she birthed him. Thus her role ended.
The halls of speculative fiction are carpeted with the corpses of the mothers who died of  broken hearts and colds in order to not complicate their progeny’s journey. In fantasy TV and Film the trend, quite naturally, continued. In the original Star Wars trilogy, Princess Leia and Luke’s mother, Padme Amidala lived a full life of adventure but then died of a broken heart shortly after her children were born, as of course she should have done. Can you imagine, had she survived, the plot-spoiling link to their past she would have become? In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Joyce Summer’s death, whilst arguably the critical highpoint of the series, was seen as necessary.  She had to die, or else Buffy might have never become who she was always meant to be. As a mother she was an obstacle, one the scriptwriters helpfully removed.
Occasionally, the death of the character’s mother brings about the advent of the perennial archetype of the evil step-mother. A twisted parody of what a mother should be, just as the dead mother was convenient to the character’s journey, the insertion of the stepmother exists solely to scupper all of the character’s efforts. The examples of the conniving stepmother trope abound in traditional folktales (like in Cinderella, or its Slavic equivalent, Vasilisa, where the young protagonist is sent off by her stepmother to ask a favour of the infamous witch, Baba Yaga), mythologies (think the ultimate evil stepmother, Hera, who habitually persecuted the innocent results of her husband Zeus’ many indiscretions), and, not surprisingly, in fantasy genre as well.
In A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin (which actually does portray an unusual range of mothers with agency), Catelyn Stark, an otherwise fiercely loyal mother, is a cold and distant stepmother to Jon Snow. In the first novel in Katherine Arden’s fantastic Winternight trilogy,  the main protagonist grows up in the shadow of her vapid, fearful and cruel stepmother. Part of the reason, I’d argue, why older women are so often portrayed as annoying and conniving, is because, as far as the traditional narratives are concerned, the whole of their role and purpose is fulfilled the moment their physical (youthful) attractiveness wanes. Those without the wisdom to exit the stage by dying become at worst a cumbersome plot bunny and at best an obstacle.
The issue of a lack of older women in fantasy is such an expansive subject that it demands the respect of a separate thought piece, really. And, as regards the stepmothers, I’m not saying, of course, that they should always be portrayed as kind and loving. But precisely because their archetype is rooted so strongly in our collective consciousness, it’s particularly important to acknowledge their humanity. And as far as the humanity of the older female (in the traditional fantasy fiction this seems to describe any woman over twenty) character goes, the good news is the tide is turning.
Part of the reason for that is that more women than ever are given the platform to write their stories. Perhaps somewhere along the way the publishing industry as a whole realised that as women account for the majority of fiction readers (according to one cross-Atlantic research they make up to 80% of fiction market), then perhaps portraying women as actual people, whose agency doesn’t evaporate once they get pregnant, might simply be good marketing.
In the recent years I’ve been ecstatic to see nuance brought into the motherhood trope within the genre. Where the mother of the character is dead, she is so for a damn good reason, with the echoes of her absence reverberating through the story in the most compelling ways, like in Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn. Mothers fight beside their children, and grandchildren (Like the pink-haired protagonist of The Phlebotomist by Chris Panatier), and battle hardship and heartache, like in Madeline Miller’s Circe.
As a mother it was important to me to focus on the humanity of motherhood in my debut, The Second Bell. The mothers I wrote are not perfect, and they are not always right. And even when they are, they might not know it for certain. And that is the point. Mothers deserve their place in fiction not because they’re perfect, but because they are human. Their decisions are just as complex as their younger counterparts and are complicated further by their new and life-changing bond with their child.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Writing mothers is writing humans. No more, no less. They matter and they are worthy of notice.
Second Bell will be released on Tuesday, March 9th. You can find out more about Gabriela Houston here.

RNM 2x06 - Sex and Candy
EPISODE SUMMARY:
Maria’s (Heather Hemmens) investigation into her mother’s disappearance leads her and Alex (Tyler Blackburn) to the home of a mysterious boot maker named Travis (guest star David Anders). Meanwhile, on her journey of self-discovery, Isobel’s (Lily Cowles) night out leads her into the arms of someone unexpected. Finally, after making some major scientific strides, Liz (Jeanine Mason) is dealt a devastating blow. Geoff Shotz directed the episode written by Rick Montano & Vincent Ingrao (#206). Original airdate 4/20/2020.
DETAILS:
Max and Isobel's fight:
Lights start flickering when Max starts getting aggressive and then get brighter as he gets more worked up.
The first attempt to expel it seemed like he was causing an earthquake.  He blew out all the windows in the gym, knocked Isobel down, and there was shaking.  But it didn't seem to go beyond that room - no damage is seen when Michael arrives or around town.
Note, after the earthquake thingie the lights go out
His hands are doing the electric power thingie and THEN he also grabs the lightning.
I think Isobel used her telekinesis to stop it and then push it away, which seemed to work...but if so then why couldn't Noah do that last season?
Was it the sheer volume of electricity? There was definitely MORE than with Noah.
Tumblr media
Michael uses his telekinesis to manually reset Max's heart.  This is very smart of him. Note that he's using his own heart/pulse to get it right.
Tumblr media
They are using the antidote to Liz's serum to try to heal Max's mind.
Michael says that they've been giving him antidote injections for three days (time jump).
Three days of antidote and no new memories for Max.
Isobel remembered her blackouts within a few hours of getting injected with the antidote in 1x10.
Note: Liz hesitated using the antidote this way in 1x10 because Isobel could still be dangerous and they didn't know about the 4th Alien yet.  There doesn't seem to be a similar hesitation with Max. Because Liz trusts him more? Because him forgetting her is more personal? It's not like there isn't a chance that Max is still dangerous…
Maria arranged a Mexican market in the Pony parking lot to subsidize her income.
Buffy the Beagle is Forrest's dog!
Maria comments that the meteor shower makes animals act strange. And humans too.
Forrest and Maria are organizing an open night mic at the Wild Pony.  Free drinks for performers.
Maria clearly approves of Forrest and Alex getting to know each other.  She smacks Alex for his awkward flirting.
The bootmaker's farm is about an hour outside of town.
The Science:
Kyle and Steph are watching a "surgical separation of craniopagus twins".
Craniopagus Twins = twins attached at the cranium/head. (Aka not a heart surgery).
"Did you know, ever since 1947, twin births in Roswell are higher than the national average? Maybe it's aliens."
Speaking of awkward flirting…. "You're just my favorite person I can't stand."
The Spanish:
Le cambio una bolsa de chiles para mi papá...for the free fries next time you come to the Crashdown.
Liz is bartering.  She says basically, I'll trade you a bag of chiles for my papa for free fries next time you come to the Crashdown.
Note, the captions for this are wrong and use the Spanish word for grasshoppers instead, but you can clearly hear Liz say chiles. Thanks to @rosaortecho for pointing that out to me.
Max says:
I'm trying to eat clean. Uh, tiene carne seca sin como se dice, preservativos.
He's trying to say, basically, does the jerky have preservatives.
Quiere carne a sin preservativos?
Basically, you want meat without condoms?
Lo siento. Uh, no lo entiendo.
I'm sorry, I don't get it.
Él quiere decir conservantes.
He means preservatives.
Gracias. Estoy embarazado.
Thank you. I'm pregnant.
Michael asks Max who he's texting. Max says everyone has been messaging him but Cameron is the only one who hasn't responded, which isn't like her.
Wildly curious who he was texting though.  It's not like he's a social butterfly. His mom? The sheriff? Who? As I pointed out to some friends the other day, he spent his 21st birthday getting trashed with his SISTER. This is not a trait of a guy with lots of close friends.
Just as another note, Michael says he ghosted her. When exactly was that? Yes, Max ran out on her in the middle of a handy in 1x03, but they addressed that the next day.  She "broke up" with him in 1x07, but they were still good right up until she left town.
Isobel:
"Does he seem different to you?"
Alex and Maria playing "Never have I Ever" in the car. Good way to do background on characters.
Maria has never cheated on a boyfriend
Alex has never been in a real relationship. Not even "Kellie Sommer-something".
Alex says that whenever he was with a woman he was trying to disappear.  Except for Sophomore year after Battle of the Bands. Seven Minutes in Heaven in Haley Moore's hall closet. Alex and Maria kissed and it was Maria's first kiss (and boob graze).  She always thought she'd marry Alex. Had to come up with a new plan after he came out.
Alex says "I did too."
"Kissing you in that closet was the first time in my life that I enjoyed touching someone."
Max picks up Liz for their first date…
Just as a note, Save Tonight was the opening song in the pilot of OG Roswell. During the "oh, Max Evans is staring at you again." exchange between Liz and Maria.  So, it might go well with new beginnings or something ;-)
The Science:
"Psychogenic amnesia limits retrieval of stored memories, but if we light up your limbic system and gustatory cortex with some familiar signals…"
"Your milkshake might bring all my memories to the yard?"
**Note, second reference to this song in the context of Liz bringing Max milkshakes. First was in 1x06 by Isobel. Hmm. 1x06 and 2x06… maybe they should crack this joke in 3x06 too.
"Sometimes when people wake up from comas they have different personalities, different tastes even…"
Everything you ever wanted to know about psychogenic amnesia:
But, my main takeaway is that it's a specific type of amnesia where there's abnormal memory function but no brain damage or other clear cause of it.
Limbic system:
Basically the part of your brain that stores emotion, behavior, and long term memory.
Gustatory cortex:
Basically the part of your brain that processes taste.
Maria compares Michael to Chad because he starts fights and lies.  Alex disagrees and lists ways that he was doing good things:
He lied to protect his family from Alex's family.
He shouldered the burden of a murder he didn't commit for ten years so that Isobel didn't have to.
He pushed Maria away to protect her - which might be a good thing too because of all his baggage.
First Date:
Max went to Ranch camp one summer and dislocated his shoulder while trying to read Lord of the Rings on horseback. #nerd.
Liz references the gala as not their first date, but there was also the desert in high school.  I guess she doesn't count that either.
Side note: Cam and Liz talked about him peacocking in 2x03, but that kinda felt out of character at the time to the Max we knew.  This Max DOES seem like he's peacocking a bit. Got dressed up, taking Liz horseback riding. He admitted to trying to one up whatever they did together before. Just an interesting (to me) observation.
Liz looks panicky when Max suggests truth serum (because Science!Liz probably could make truth serum), but once she realizes he means whiskey she's like, "oh yes, that's fine." Oh Liz…
Diego details:
They were engaged just last year
Liz left without saying goodbye
Bioengineer
They were working together on the Denver study
They would come home and keep talking about work
He had ideas to help improve it
They both spoke The Science
He pushed her to get better at The Science
When the funding was cut she realized she loved the work more than him
Liz couldn't figure out how tell him that so she packed her things in the middle of the night, hit the road, changed her phone, and blocked him on Facebook.
**This is the first time LIZ has mentioned social media. Interesting given the crap Maria keeps giving her about it!
Travis and fresh warm milk. What is up with it??
"Nice ring. Does it keep you from burning up in the daylight?"
David Anders introduces himself as Travis.
Just as a point of interest, Maria researched enough to find the bootmaker, figure out where he lives, but she didn't get his name???
Vampire Diaries/Originals reference.
Travis says he can't help with car stuff.
The milk was from a cow named Jennifer.  He milked her for the last time today. (Creepy).
Weird contradictory statements from Travis:
"You're the best thing I've seen in a long time."....
"Mm, I'm sorry. So many customers and all their ugly faces get all sewn up and stitched together in my mind."
"Yeah, that's the woman that bought them boots. While back. Nice lady. She paid cash."
Second reference to animals behaving strangely during a meteor shower:
"Meteor shower's got my girls singing a bit off key tonight.  Jennifer, she likes a good lullaby."
"Okay this guy is going to turn us into skin suits." (OG reference? Or just general sci-fi?)
Meteorchella at Planet 7 (Coachella-style party during meteor shower?) with any excuse to add sparkles!
Kyle says he's at Planet 7 because he's trying not to hang out with people from high school.
Isobel says she's trying to have fun without feeling like prey.
Don't think the details of Kyle/Isobel dancing matters all that much, but as a point of amusement I'll share that in the panel on Tuesday night they shared that Lily whispered something different to Trevino on every take...And they got progressively dirtier to the point that she finally felt like she crossed a line and profusely apologized.  Also the lick was a Lily addition.
Max's confession about killing the drifter:
Kind of an interesting thing, comparing the first version of the drifter story in 1x06 to the 2x06 version. 1x06 was more dramatic, but 2x06 was more personal, I think.
1x06
"There are moments that define our lives, and there are moments that divide our lives. Incidents that separate us into two different people: who we were before and who we will be after. Forever…One day we were children and the next we were something else. I was a killer. Michael an accomplice.  And Isobel...Isobel was broken."
2x06
"I killed a man once, on a camping trip. This drifter came out of nowhere, attacked Isobel.  I wasn't even thinking. I killed him. With this. I arrest people who kill people. Most of them usually regret what they did. You know, you can just tell that they're forever broken. It's like a piece of them dies with their victims. So when I could feel that darkness, like I had to kill, I wanted Isobel to let me die. Because I couldn't risk hurting even one innocent person. Cause life just wouldn't be worth living."
Kind of an interesting narrative choice to confess to murder on a first date and then have the girl just brush it aside.
"No, it just hit me why you're so happy and idealistic, and I feel like an idiot. You are that way because you don't remember me. It's a clean slate.  It's like when you got out of the pods with whatever memories you had erased it's probably for your own good."
"Last I heard you were the love of my life."
"Your cohorts, they left out some details. Cause if you had your memories I'm positive the worst thing that's ever happened to you is connected to me. And I can't bear the weight of making you remember that again."
**Note, second time this has been implied.  Last time was by Michael in 1x08 regarding the alien symbol.
"...it's gotta have some connection to us right? Maybe it was something we saw somewhere before the crash."
"Sorry, are you, Max Evans, acknowledging that we must have had lives before we hatched out of the pods? You never want to talk about home."
"Hey, Roswell is home. Look, I'm sorry man. You're right. I've spent a lot of time not talking about where we come from or why we're here.  Keep thinking I can pretend the past away and just be normal. But if Isobel's blackouts are some alien thing, then I need to know more. Okay, and this symbol? That's all I have to go on. I mean don't you think it's strange that we don't have any memories? I mean, no parents, no language. We weren't infants, man. We were seven."
"I just figured our memory faded. Over 50 years in those pods. Maybe it was just time. Or maybe whoever put us in those pods doesn't want us to remember."
Travis and Trevor's house...with added bonus of his ring that Alex comments on.
Tumblr media
Leather ribbons/strips on the wall are for (from?) Hayley and Gertrude. More cows, I presume.
There's also a framed Purple Heart on the wall next to a photo of Travis?
"War really messes with a man's mind.  Gets it all twisted up.
Timeline issue!! Alex says Mimi was missing for 3 weeks, but according to the clearly established timelines in 201-203 it was 4 weeks (or a month ish).  I wrote about this here:
Maria put her jacket on a scarecrow to trick Travis. And did she leave it there?
(Answer: yes. She doesn't wear it for the rest of the episode. Smart of her, actually).
Michael sees Trevor come out of the house and is about to shoot him. Maria immediate knew it wasn't Travis and threw herself in front of Michael's gun
Trevor shoots Travis.
A bullet from the Crashdown shooting falls out of Max's journal.  Does it look like it has blood on it? Or maybe just ketchup? If it's THE bullet it would make a lot of sense that he kept it hidden - evidence that Liz was shot. See this comparison between one of Wyatt's bullets in 1x02 and the one Max finds in 2x06
Tumblr media
"Sorry about my twin here. He's had a rough go."
"Combat does not make you an axe murderer."
"No, it wasn't the combat. It was the R&D. If a paramilitary group ever asks you to take part in a study, you run the other way. He showed up a few weeks ago. Locked me up out back. Lucky y'all showed up when you did. Gave me a chance to escape."
R&D is a military acronym for Research and Development. (Aka...The Science.)
Priscilla - the cow Mimi's boots were made from.
This is literally the only direct information gained about the boots from this little sleuthing excursion.
Well, and that Mimi paid cash, which isn't like her.
Side note - I didn't really know what Paramilitary meant, so just in case any of you are also not good with military stuff, Paramilitary groups are like private armies. Like, I dunno, the private security firm that Jesse and Cam discussed in episode 2x04. 👀
Male doctor operating on Steph clearly states:
"All right we're approaching an arterial junction."
A female doctor replies and its less clear.  What I hear is...Blood gasses are back? Anyone else hear something that makes more sense than that?
He replied something like...the stint through here
She says something about pH levels.
Max admits that he didn't know what would happen when he decided to bring Rosa back.  He just wanted to fix the worst thing that ever happened to all of them.
"I can't believe we were Shyamalan'd by an evil twin."
I think Alex is referring to the twist ending? Or maybe just the insane axe murderer stuff.
M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed the Sixth Sense, Signs, Split, etc…
During this scene is the first time we see Michael's tattoo… it's on his arm. I struggled with getting a cap of it, but I know there are gifs going around.
I had every intention of detailing the dialogue in the trailer scene, but before I could get to it, Carina posted the script, so I didn't think it was a good use of my time. Here's the script:
Tumblr media
The next morning, Alex calls the Sheriff from outside the trailer for an update.
The Sheriff tells him that Travis and Trevor burned their home and ran...weren't caught by the sheriff.  Which means we may not have seen the last of them.
The Spanish:
"Oh my God. Dios mio, Max. I took off your pants before I even said I love you. I'm some kind of zorra."
Dios mio basically is Oh My God! So Liz really was spiraling. She went, "Oh my God, Oh my God..."
Zorra - female version of Zorro. Basically a vixen, bitch, prostitute… the internet has all sorts of fun words that it translates into.
"I call this one Visceral Werewolf Part 2, dedicated to my boy Chee Chee, may he rest in peace."
Can we have more Bert? Bert is the best. Also kudos to his goofy friend who is wayyy too excited about this.
Forrest's slam poem:
Locked up for days,
Time slipping away,
On my knees I would pray to break free from this cage.
But bargaining for keys, you forget hidden fees.
And wishing for what you’re missing ain’t the same as living the dream.
And now I’m fighting to stay on this side of the cage.
Even though I know a part of me wishes I’d stayed.
Ain’t no prophet or rebel or savior or devil
Could have predicted, fought, cheated or leveled.
A life with potential that’s squandered,
A comfortable cell is a question I ponder.
Am I a free man or a prisoner wanderer?
Max's memory flash:
Tumblr media
Young Max, chained to the ground as described in 2x03.
Max looks scared.
He's dressed all in white like the 1947 aliens after the crash (As shown in 1x12 and 2x03).
He's in a cave or something like a cave.
Holes in the wall are glowing an orangey red color.
The ceiling is like the alien ship material with the alien symbol in it.
Tumblr media
A figure approaches from behind him, bends down, and places a hand on his shoulder.
It mirrors the figure approaching Nora in 2x03 and touching her shoulder before burning the military men...probably the same person? Noah? The stowaway? Someone new?
After the figure touches Max, he looks at the hand, and then a red glow lights his face.
Tumblr media
MUSIC:
1. Xocoyotzin Herrera "Esperanza"
2. Jose Luis Lepe "La Carreta"
3. Eagle Eye Cherry "Save Tonight"
4. Lousiana Red "I Done Woke Up"
5. Whissell "Magnetic"
6. Stop Dead "Alchemistress Dance"
