With a little help from my friends Tolerance Project Extra Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Introduction
Hello Today marks the annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities I thought I would celebrate that by writing and posting this one off blog first a little bit of background.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. It was originally called "International Day of Disabled Persons" until 2007.
Tumblr media
Every year since 1992, the UN announces a theme for International Day of People with Disability. The 2023 theme is “United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.”
Obviously, that is a bit of a mouthful. In simpler terms, the theme calls for us all to work together to make the world a better place for people with disabilities — it shouldn’t be up to them alone to constantly fight and advocate for themselves
So in plain English for those that don’t speak UN this years Day for disabled people is all about working together so the title of this blog originally written last year called with a little help from my freinds could not be more apt

What was the Tolerance Group?
If I have got my sums right 'Tolerance' came into my life round about time I was still at Shelley High School in about 1995 It was created out of one of the summer school play schemes that Kirklees used to run. We had such a good time one year that this particular group wanted to see more of each other to socialise and do other projects.
With the help of one of the play Scheme organisers called Craig Wood he suggested we get Together as a youth group.
We began as a small group of people, calling ourselves the Deighton Group. As the local PHAB group was shutting down, the group got a lot bigger and we changed our name to 'Tolerance'. It was Craig I think who came up with the name we began appearing in local media and were becoming more well known, a local development officer who was called Jeremy Walker organised us into a fully-functioning group. I was asked to be co-ordinator, a job which I did for 7 years. Gemma Blagbrough was my second-in-command and transport secretary. With the help of the local development officer, we applied for funding for a variety of projects. As co-ordinator for the group I found myself doing a lot of the admin work, filling out funding forms, writing newsletters, doing radio and newspaper interviews, and going to various meetings to ask for money to get projects started.
Tolerance The Movie
The idea behind the film was one of Jeremy Walkers many ideas and it was a good one the aim of the film was simple We wanted to make a film that reflected the life of young disabled people in the 21st century. It was important to us as a group that it was funny, and that it would capture the humour within the group. At the same time, we wanted it to deliver a serious message about what it was like to live with a disability day-to-day.
Jeremy can be seen in a cameo in the finished film as Julie’s Taxi driver Julie was played by actress Claire Abbot
The film has five main themes: Employment, Social Life, Transport, Accessibility, and Relationships. We chose these themes because they were important areas of all the lives of the group members.
Also If we were going to make the film we wanted to be involved with it as much as possible provide as much of the cast and crew in the finished film as we could. In the end other members of Tolerance who were not in front of the camera worked in the sound and make up departments
After a couple of false starts we approached a company called Eclipse Productions run by Richard Hellawell.
The script was written by Richard Hellawell with input from Tolerance members; myself and Jeremy Walker were the film’s producers. In keeping with the humour we wanted the film to portray, we included film spoofs of Officer and a Gentleman, Star Wars, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
One major difference of opinion was who was going to act in our film. Richard wanted people he had worked with previously, where as myself and some of the group members had envisioned that we would use disabled actors. Was our film going to be stopped in its tracks before it had even started?
In the end we managed to reach a compromise and two of our disabled members appeared in the finished film: Gemma Blagbrough as the cinema manager; and Michael Weaver as a blind person using Huddersfield Train Station.
Filming began on 16th August 1999 but the most stressful days shooting was at Huddersfeild Train Station
Shooting scenes at Huddersfield Train Station
From Rob Martin’s photos, the train sequences where shot on 17 August 1999. I remember the day as being very stressful and bursting into tears!
Michael for me gives a very natural performance, and he and Claire Abbot work well together.
On the photo front we have 35 photos of this day’s filming – most of them in black and white. As it was Michael Weaver’s day, when he was playing a starring role, he appears in quite a few of the photos having a laugh with our leading lady, Claire Abbot. There are also some photos, when he was being made up by our make-up lady, Andrea Dowdall Goddard.
Since working on Tolerance, Andrea has worked on episodes of the Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood, Coronation Street and the film, Guest House Paradiso. Andrea’s credits are on IMDB:  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1350227/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Gemma Blagbourgh was the second member of Tolerance to appear in the film, Gemma Blagbrough, appears as the cinema manager. All her scenes were shot on the last day of filming I had the day off that day but the rest of the cast and crew had to get up at 5.30am to shoot the cinema scenes. Gemma said about her Tolerance experience afterwards:
‘Yes I really enjoyed the whole experience of working on Tolerance. The only thing I didn’t like were the early mornings; the earliest being half past five in the morning when I had to film my scenes. It was long hours, but I wanted to show people with a disability that you can work and you can work in positions of authority.’

The old parish house, former residence of the clergy in charge of the city and now a guest house for esteemed guests of the church authorities. The old building was rebuilt in the 1800s into a magnificent structure with clear Moorish influences popular around the time. Surprisingly, this wasn't enough to have the people in charge move back in. The collection of art within it and the church does make it an attractive place to visit. This is clearly not a backstory meant to explain why the people in charge just don't live right next to the church as they would in real life due to a limitation in the way The Sims games handle community lots.
The parish house is a significant improvement I made on the older version and is inspired by two real world buildings in Manila's old city, Intramuros: The Augustinian Provincial House (today the ECJ building, which I did try to build once) and the Jesuit Convent (today the Museo de Intramuros). Both structures were destroyed during the closing days of World War II but were rebuilt with their facades mostly reminiscent of the original buildings several decades later. I took pictures!
Bonus view of the city. I decided to swap out the buildings at Fort. St. Simeon with the one that originally came with Isla Paradiso... at least for now.

What was the rick mayall comedy with ade that rheyre two old fucks living in an apartment together... ik thats so vauge but im trying to remember the name of it to watch it again 😭 i just re watched all of tyo and neeeddd to find it again lol
Also hope your doing well its been awhile since ive been on tumblr to see or ask about ur page but i think abt u occasionally and im like yeah i hope theyre doing well keeping the tyo fandom alive
Also is there no charictor limit on these asks now????
Hi! Sorry it's taken me a while to answer this.
It sounds like you're describing Bottom, the '90s sitcom where Rik and Ade played two broadly middle aged bastards at the bottom (get it?) of society, loafing about, being pervy, and causing chaos. It isn't quite as surreal as The Young Ones, but it does feature lots of slapstick violence - Richie and Eddie have at least one very creative physical fight per episode - and there are occasions where something extra mad will happen, like the ceiling caving in, underpants being filled with custard, and fire farts (to name a few examples). Christopher Ryan also appears in a few episodes as one of Eddie's mates, Dave Hedgehog.
One of the original inspirations for Bottom was Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, which Rik and Ade both loved and thought was funny. It was one of the things they bonded over at uni, and the two of them got to star in a run of it in the early '90s (again, with Christopher Ryan).
There were three series of Bottom from 1991-1995, totalling at 18 episodes. All episodes were available on Dailymotion the last time I checked - in fact, I have a post somewhere on this blog with links to them, though it may very well be outdated by now. If you have a mooch around online, you should be able to find them.
The reason I'm guessing you mean Bottom is because Richie Richard and Eddie Hitler live together in a (disgusting) flat in Hammersmith, and there are some episodes set entirely within this horrid hovel. However, Filthy, Rich and Catflap also sees Richie Rich and Eddie Catflap sharing a (not quite as disgusting) flat, but these characters were a bit younger - and, to be honest, Bottom is the more highly regarded of the two sitcoms, though I don't think FR&C is anywhere near as bad as some critics made out.
Rik and Ade made five live stage shows for Bottom (Bottom Live) between 1993-2003. In fact, the fifth Bottom Live was the last substantial work they did together. All five of these have been available on YouTube for some years, so I assume they still are. I personally just slightly prefer the sitcom (or maybe I'm just jealous I can't go and see Bottom Live 😂), and I think a general rule of thumb is the quality does decline a little across the five (apologies to my comedy gods, although I think Ade might agree with me), but they are all absolutely worth a watch. Rik and Ade break character in them from time to time, and they're allowed to say fuck.
They also made a Bottom film in 1999 called Guest House Paradiso, which features Simon Pegg. Rik and Ade play the same characters, but now they run an appalling hotel on the Isle of Wight and their surnames are different (which Ade acknowledged when I went to see him touring with his autobiography was inexplicable). The film is not for the weak of stomach, certainly not for anyone with emetophobia, and unfortunately it does suffer from the curse of most sitcom movies apart from Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa in that it doesn't quite translate. To be fair, they didn't have a massive budget, and it happened only a year after Rik's accident (they were both meant to direct it, but Ade took on full directing duties as a result of this). Still, it's not unfunny, and I think it's available on Dailymotion; if you like Bottom, you should give it a watch. I wonder what a Bottom film set in the original world of the sitcom would've been like...
I have an inking who you are, although I might be wrong. I hope you're well, anyway. 😂 I'm fine, just trundling along, coming up to my last semester as an undergrad. Tumblr may well have changed the character limit on asks, though I honestly couldn't say for sure.

Thanks for the ask!

Tricky choice. I managed to get it down to either Ben Elton's essay on why The Young Ones is funny, the Bottom series 4 scripts, or Waiting for Godot. In the end, I went with the Bottom series 4 scripts.
I know they recycled at least bits of them into the subsequent live shows, but I'm still curious about the intentions for series 4. I'm assuming Richie and Eddie wouldn't have been magically transplanted to Hooligan's Island, because I very much doubt the BBC had the budget or the inclination to make new sets for a sitcom's fourth series (especially since Rik and Ade were no longer the new hot property, comedy-wise, by the late '90s). The whole deal with most traditional sitcoms is the situation stays roughly the same, so taking them out of Hammersmith would've been odd. I'm not sure Bottom the TV show would've worked outside the traditional sitcoms parameters it operated by - I can't see how it still would've been Bottom if they left Hammersmith, in the same way Guest House Paradiso isn't quite Bottom, more Bottom a few degrees to the left.
ANYWAY, point is, I'd like to find out what the individual episode plots were for series 4! Rik and Ade's propensity for coming up with new things for Richie and Eddie to do in that flat was impressive (and very amusing).
Another thing that springs to mind that I'd like to see is The New Statesman live show, The Blair B'Stard Project, which ran in 2006/07, and which I don't believe was ever filmed. Considering how long after the TV show it came, plus the fact there was no Piers (Michael Troughton wasn't acting at the time, as his wife had developed MS and he was her carer), it might've been... Not quite on level with the sitcom. But I'd still absolutely watch it, if I had the chance. One of my mum's friends went to see it and claims Rik called her a smart arse when he forgot a line and she shouted it out at him. 😂
To be honest, the only thing on this list I'd not totally jump at the bit to watch/read is Rik as Peeves. Once upon a time, I'd have loved to see the footage. I'm sure he knocked it out of the park. But I'm pretty content these days that he was cut from the first film and therefore isn't predominantly known for Harry Potter (because he definitely would be by the Americanised internet, if he'd been in it). I'm cool with having Drop Dead Fred take that spot for Rik, for anyone too young or not interested enough in British comedy to know otherwise who he was and what he did. When you think about it, Fred and Peeves are pretty similar, anyway.

Some notes: So at the end of July I was off film and off tumblr and not sure if I'd be back but I guess now I am, to some extent at least. The very start of this list is a bit innacurate. I probably watched a few more films than I've listed and maybe in a different order but from Gothic onwards it's correct - not that it really matters! I really must try to get back into having a themed Halloween watch list, which I haven't done since the japanese one in 2019, it's more fun. Am I doing Noirvember? I don't know.

I'm going to do this in one go because I know I won't remember to post every day.
1. Your favourite Young One?
Tumblr media
2. Are you more like Richie or Eddie from Bottom?
I'm definitely more like Richie. I tend to get overly excited and anxious when something new or exciting happens. I also fail to notice certain social cues and awkwardly switch subjects when I realize that a convo isn't going the way I had expected it to. I imagine that if I didn't learn what was and what wasn't socially acceptable, I would've been a Richie.
Tumblr media
3. Do you have Bachelor Boys or any other books by Rik or Ade?
I won Rik's autobiography in a contest. I'm pretty proud of that.
4. Your favourite Comic Strip?
A Fist Full of Travellers' Cheques, but also More Bad News and Four Men in a Plane.
Tumblr media
5. Your favourite episode of The Young Ones?
Tumblr media
6. Rank these Ade characters: Vyvyan Basterd, Eddie Hitler, Eddie Catflap, Adrian Dangerous and Vim Fuego.
Vim Fuego
Eddie Hitler
Vyvyan Basterd
Eddie Catflap
Adrian Dangerous
7. Have you seen the episode of Hardwicke House featuring Rik and Ade?
Not in its entirety.
8. Your favourite guest star in Filthy, Rich and Catflap?
I haven't seen all of it yet, but Fry and Laurie were fun.
9. Have you ever written fanfic or made fanart for any of Rik and Ade's work?
I've painted a few portraits. I'm currently working on a Bottom poster. Trying to find/take good screenshots of the boys fighting.
10. Your favourite Dangerous Brothers sketch?
The babysitter one.
11. Your opinion on Guest House Paradiso?
I love it so much. It's pure chaos.
Tumblr media

Can't think of any at the moment.
13. Whose hair is worse: Richie Rich or Richard Dangerous?
It's a tie

'S Out.
15. Rik and Ade's most memorable fight scene, in your opinion?
There are so many... the one in 'S Out does stand out.
16. Your favourite Bottom Live?
Hooligan's Island.
17. Rank these Rik characters: Rick Pratt, Richie Richard, Richie Rich, Richard Dangerous and Colin Grigson.
Richie Richard

I think it's a stage name
19. Your favourite member of Bad News?
Colin
Tumblr media
20. Your favourite Ade quote, from real life or a show?
Can't think of any at the moment.
21. Do you have any headcanons linking Rik and Ade's various characters together?
I'll admit, I haven't thought about it too much.
22. Your thoughts on the ending of The Young Ones?
It's sad that they were killed off, but it think it was a good spot to end the show at.
23. Your favourite series/film/play Rik has done without Ade?
Drop Dead Fred
Tumblr media
24. Your favourite episode of Filthy, Rich and Catflap?
I haven't gotten far enough to say yet.

26. Have you seen The Man Behind The Green Door?
I have seen half of it.
27. Would you dare go out drinking with the Dreamytime Escorts?
I would not. Well... maybe.
28. Your favourite series/film/play Ade has done without Rik?
Does Happy Families count? Rik is in only one episode.
29. How did you discover Rik and Ade?
My boyfriend loves Bad News. He had me watch it early on in our relationship. However, I didn't get into Rik and Ade until we watched Bottom. Then we were hooked.
