The Moon's mass is about one-sixth of Earth's; its density and surface gravity (at 0.1654 g) are rivaled among Solar System satellites only by Jupiter's moon Io. It is a satellite planet in geophysical terms and among all planetary-mass objects of the Solar System larger and more massive than all of its known dwarf planets.[17] Its diameter is 3,474 km (2,159 mi), which is roughly one-quarter that of Earth or about the width of Australia,[18]making it by far the largest and most massive satellite in the Solar System in relation to its parent planet and the fifth-largest Solar System satellite overall. The body of the Moon is differentiatedand terrestrial, with no significant hydrosphere, atmosphere, or magnetic field. It formed 4.51 billion years ago, not long after Earth's formation, out of the debris from a giant impact between Earth and a hypothesized Mars-sized body called Theia.
The lunar surface is covered in impact craters and is marked, mostly on the near side of the Moon, by dark maria ("seas"), which are plains of cooled magma. These maria formed when large impacts on the far side of the Moon heated up low lying layers of its crust on the near side. The Moon is, beside when passing through Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse, always illuminated by the Sun, but from Earth the visible illumination shifts during its orbit, producing the lunar phases.[19] The Moon is the brightest celestial object in Earth's night sky. This is mainly due to its large angular diameter, while the reflectance of the lunar surface is comparable to that of asphalt. The apparent size is nearly the same as that of the Sun, allowing it to cover the Sun almost completely during a total solar eclipse. From Earth about 59% of the lunar surface is visible over time due to cyclical shifts in perspective (libration), making parts of the far side of the Moon visible.
For humans the Moon has been an important source of inspiration and knowledge, having been crucial to cosmography, mythology, religion, art, time keeping, natural science, and spaceflight. On September 13, 1959 the Soviet Union's Luna 2was the first human-made object to reach the Moon and any extraterrestrial body, and the first soft landing was achieved in 1966 by Luna 9. On July 20, 1969 the United States' Apollo 11mission landed humans for the first time on the Moon, and any extraterrestrial body, at Mare Tranquillitatis with the lander Eagle. Five more crews were sent between then and 1972, each with two men landing on the surface. The longest stay was 75 hours by the Apollo 17 crew. Thereafter exploration of the Moon has continued robotically, with crewed missions being planned to return starting in the late 2020s.

S3E4 (spoilers abound)
Portia, Prudence, and Philippa listening at the open door while Debling calls on Pen. The three of them are anything but subtle.
Aww, he gave her a potted plant so she can have nature indoors with her. I hope somebody in this house has a green thumb. He is sweet but he'd better be honest with whoever he ends up marrying about his actual reason for finding a wife.
Has Pen truly given up on Colin? It's sad if that's true.
"I will surely eat all of the biscuits" You mean we FINALLY have an appearance by Colin's bottomless pit of a stomach? It only took what, TWO AND A HALF SEASONS?!
Violet knows when something is up but she also knows a dismissal when she hears one.
Benedict and Lady Tilley. Yeah, she's this season's Siena, though I will say I like her a lot more than I liked Siena (which isn't hard). She won't last but at least they'll be fun to watch while she's around.
Agatha and Marcus. Their dynamic is interesting -- "Do whatever, I'm too busy to get involved." I doubt he'll last beyond S3, but you never know.
"to become the new Marquess Samadani" OH MY FUCKING GOD, SHONDA, YOU DID NOT!!! The wife of a marquess (or a female marquess in her own right) is not called a marquess, but a MARCHIONESS! I know marquess isn't a common title in the British peerage but Shonda, you have access to Wikipedia, FUCKING USE IT!!!
"You read me too well." God, I love Charlotte and Brimsley.
Violet, El, Fran, and the kids are expecting Lord Samadani but Maybe-John has dropped in instead. We'd better learn his name soon, this is driving me nuts.
"John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin." FUCKING FINALLY!!!! I don't care that his accent is wrong, I love this guy already! Is your cousin Michael in town too, John? Or is he earning his title of the Merry Rake elsewhere?
John and Fran are simply enjoying the silence and the rest of the family is completely baffled, I love it. And here comes Samadani, lovely. John, your timing is awful.
Samadani seems like a nice enough guy, he's just wrong for Francesca.
Love the library, hate Portia's internalized misogyny. I really feel for Cressida now. Can Debling marry her once Colin finally gets his head out of his ass and marries Pen?
I take "revelry" to mean Colin's friends are going whoring and want him to come with, lovely.
Debling is finally being honest? Well, not directly, but still, I'll take it for now. Oh, he's being subtle but he is being direct, got it. Poor Pen, she's torn between the life she wants and a good life that's being offered to her.
Colin with his two ladies again but this time, he's not into it. If you've already paid, Colin, you could've just bid them goodnight and left, you didn't have to stay.
Francesca running into John on the street. These two are a little too quiet for their own good, but I'm sure they'll be fine, maybe with a little help from Violet.
The Cowpers' sitting room has to be the most depressing room on the planet. Lord Cowper's forbidding Cressida from being friends with Eloise? Is it because of Colin? Or Pen? Or maybe he thinks she's putting too much effort into the friendship and not enough into finding a husband. Cressida, I'm guessing you're the same age as Daphne, so I believe that makes you 23 now. You're a legal adult and have been for two years. It would be highly irregular but you could move out of your parents' house. I'm sure the Bridgertons would take you in if Eloise explained everything.
Uh oh, the Mondriches' pub needs saving (again). We'll have another last-minute save by a Bridgerton by the time S3 is over, I'm sure. Frankly, most of the ton can fuck themselves, and that includes Colin's "friends," especially Fife. Pig.
Colin wanting more out of sex is a great sign of both his maturity and him falling in love.
So Debling's serious about proposing to Pen. Poor Pen and poor Cressida.
BTW, I love how the subtitles keep calling the music this season "pensive," it feels like an unintended pun.
For a woman who can't come up with a decent metaphor to save her life, Violet is very wise when it comes to her kids. Oh, she is playing Colin like a fiddle! Go, Violet!
I really like her and Marcus together, he seems like a great guy, though apparently somewhat estranged from Agatha.
Cressida came to Eloise. El really brings out the best in her, something her parents really try to keep hidden. I swear to God, Shonda, if you don't give Cressida a happy ending, I will.
Be careful, Fran, especially with the Queen watching.
Colin has finally outgrown his "friends," halleluiah!
Well, at least Debling bowed out gracefully. And Cressida still has a chance, as slim as it is.
Oh, is this THE carriage scene? Not quite how the book one went but hey, if we get the same outcome, I'm all for it.
Aww, Colin looks like he's about to cry.
"Are you going to marry me or not?" Colin, I could kiss you but I'll leave that to Pen. WE GOT OUR BOOK PROPOSAL!!!
And we don't even get an answer before the episode ends.
Nice cliffhanger, Shonda.

The internet is pretty cool
Tumblr media
Twitter is a hellscape. I mean that literally. It has always been, but fuck has it gotten worse since Elmo took over.
Facebook is not any better, for that matter. (Accidental poetry for the win!) There is a reason so many boomers got radicalized into some conspiracy bullshit via facebook.
Youtube is slowly drowning in the adpocalypse.
And tumblr... Has most certainly its own issues, though I gotta say that after getting used to the place it seems the most sane place of all the internet.
And I guess reddit... Trudges along.
So, Web 2.0 in general though... Kinda sucks.
Yet, I am currently basically chatting on a daily basis with a Japanese friend, who has studied Japanese history and will ramble about said Japanese history to me all day long. And then I will chat to friends in Berlin and talk about social movements in Germany. Maybe I am then also discussing stuff with friends from the USA or from Brazil. And we will share our knowledge. There are forums on Solarpunk. There are places for people to organize.
Even the fucking hellscape that is twitter most certainly made it so, that marginalized voices that have been ignored for decades got finally more room.
And that... is kinda awesome, isn't it?
If I have a question, there is a good chance I will be able to answer it by googling it. Or by just going to Wikipedia or SciHub. There is so much knowledge accessible. Or I can just ask the question at some place and get it answered.
And... like. That was kinda what the internet was supposed to be, right?
It was supposed to be a place for knowledge to be shared. I mean, it originally connected universities for heaven's sake. And when it does that, it is kinda a fucking amazing place.
And all I am thinking is... we kinda need to find a way to take the internet back from big companies.
No, I do not know how. But... It somehow has to work, right? The internet should not be in a chokehold by a handful of quasi-monopolistic companies. It should just be a place where you could properly share your knowledge with other people. A place for folks to connect.
I really do not know how to get there. But... It needs to happen, God darn it.

Manga
Dragon Ball related things:
Dragon Ball (the manga that Dragon Ball Z was adapted from is considered to be still a part of the original series. the manga relevant to that is/was sold over here as the Dragon Ball Z manga, but I'm not sure whats going on with that. can someone whos more of a dragon ball superfan help me figure that out a little???????? even the wiki articles are confusing me on this)
Dragon Ball Super (concepts, storyline, some storyboards and dialogue. It is mainly done by Toyotarou and was released at the same time as the anime before the manga got ahead of it)

(sorry if this ask is a little long, I'm having a total 'tism moment rn) Your issue with the all book tie-ins is fair, tbh. I only know about the Mimic via the wikipedia and word of mouth; due to the whole Scott Cawthon Donating Fiasco, I didn't feel comfortable directly accessing/purchasing FNaF stuff (if that makes sense), so as a result I resorted to watching playthroughs and reading up on on the wikipedia.
As a result, I can understand some people being confused about this stuff. Is the mimic a really cool idea? Sure, yeah, but everyone should be able to know about it.
I was thinking a little bit more about the Elevator Ending, and I think... if that is the actual canon ending, there's a very low chance Cassie died. It just doesn't make sense narrative wise- she's such a good character (seriously, I love her, her genuine concern (most of) the animatronics and Gregory, mixed with her funny quips and good VA, makes her a great sort of parallel to Gregory), to kill her off so quickly just feels... wrong.
I'm also... very intrigued about Gregory... And the fact he and, presumably Freddy and Vanessa, do not want to be found/are on the run. While at first, it was a little jarring for him to just. throw Cassie under the bus... I hate to say this, but imo, it feels... kinda in character. He wrecked the rest of the Glamrock Animatronics, and, iirc, in one ending of SB, he indirectly kills Vanny. So... was it a jerk move to do that to Cassie? Of course. Was it in-character?... Kind of? I guess? It can be debatable.
Anyways, I can't wait to see what else is dug up in the DLC. And I do hope we get more answers.
dw abt the long ask, i love hearing people talk abt things they're passionate abt and hearing other opinions!! /gen
but i agree w/ almost every point you've made here- i dont feel comfortable putting my money into FNAF stuff considering. as a bi trans guy, kkindof just feels. wrong to fund donations toward things going toward horrible causes (and while im not american, i dont want to fund that either way), but regardless of that, casual viewers really shouldn't. have to research a fuck ton just to understand RUIN
my problem with the mimic is. he just doesn't make sense. and it takes ALOT away from vanny, who i thought would be the main antagonist from here onwards (and i can't imagine how dissapointed vannessa fans are right now). i just can't wrap my head around the mimic or any of the science fiction stuff- and i admit i'm with the crowd missing when FNAF was a simple horror game with ghosts and murders, even moreso now that RUIN's decided to go the route of being a jumble of sci-fi that explains nothing about the story at all
i do agree with the elevator ending and gregory points though! cassie is a brilliant character and i doubt she's dead, and the elevator ending was actually pretty damn cool! the visuals were great and gregory's sudden heel-turn betrayal was super interesting and shocking!
my only wish with RUIN from this point onwards is that it. explains everything in detail and that it utilizes eclipse because goddamnit they did not just introduce him only to never use him he's such a good character im still SO mad that he only got 5 minutes. again.
i'm super excited to see what else is dug up too and i'm hopeful that we'll get answers!!
(also just watched the scooper ending and it doesn't make sense either this DLC needs to explain things stg. what the hell was that what was any of that i do NOT understand a second of this)

I recently saw a take that Mr. Gold is antisemitic and was so confused??? What do you think?
Oh yeah, I've seen takes like that too. I think the takes are valid (especially when they're made by actual Jewish people who know more about antisemitism than us goyim.) Obviously, I don't think it makes OUAT "irredeemable media," but it is a lens by which we can and should analyze the work.
For the record, I don't think Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz set out to create an antisemitic character. (Eddie's wikipedia page says he's Jewish. Adam's doesn't, but Horowitz is a pretty Jewish last name so I'm making an educated guess.)
Long story short: Antisemitism is one of the backbones of Western society, whether we want it to be or not. It's in our stories (and especially our fairy tales), even when we have no malicious intent.
Let's start with the fairy tale. The story of Rumpelstiltskin has a lot of antisemitic tropes. It's a story about a weird little guy with easy access to gold deceiving a pretty young woman into giving up her child. We've got all the hits here! Any story about stealing babies is probably rooted in antisemitism. Stealing them, eating them, drinking their blood/adrenachrome (I refuse to google that word in order to spell it correctly)--bigots have been saying that about Jewish people for a very long time.
All of the tropes from the fairy tale get translated into modern times with Gold. He is rich and shady and he's always playing people and he can't be trusted. He knows things other people don't know, he dresses differently than the heroes, he's always apart from the crowd so he must be plotting something.
Then we have Bobby, who is not Jewish as far as I know, but who is short and has a big nose. I've seen people headcanon Gold as Jewish as a positive thing, and I can definitely see that. Intelligence and "tricky" cleverness, being small and still outmatching much larger foes--these are traits valued in Jewish culture, and they should be celebrated in characters.
(I've long wanted to read a version of Beauty and the Beast where Beauty is a Jewish woman. It makes so much sense--a woman who loves knowledge and is ostracized by the greater community, who can look a monster in the face and see his humanity, who has faith that if she does the right thing she will make it through this time of trouble, who has gorgeous curly brown hair! But I digress.)
The problem is, that even when Rumple is good, he's not trustworthy. Even when he's part of the group, he's still different. When something goes wrong, he's the first person the heroes blame. He's self-serving, he cares more about himself and his family than whatever the heroes need from him at that moment.
We lovingly call Rumple a lizard man, but the conspiracy theory of lizard people working their will behind the scenes is an antisemitic classic.
Before I end this, I want to go back to the idea of intention, and what we can learn from analyzing a story this way. A lot of the tropes that have antisemitic roots can be dismissed as "Yeah, that's just villains!" That was my response for a long time. Of course villains are well dressed and intelligent, of course they're deceitful, of course they have bad intentions for children--that's what bad guys do.
Then you have to think about real life. Stories--especially children's stories--are lessons. They're cautionary tales that tell us what dangers are out there, what we should be afraid of. As much as I agree that there is a difference between fiction and reality, we need to be cautious about who we think the "bad guys" are in real life. Because once we learn that certain traits equal villainy, we can assume that people who have those traits might be villainous. It's especially insidious when one of the traits in question is deceit. You can't trust any of them! They're capable of anything! We all know that, we've been told it since we were children!
And that's how innocent people in real life get murdered at a synagogue.
Watch out for the things that are in your brain. I said earlier that antisemitism is a backbone of western society. It's also like lead pipes: We modern, well-meaning people didn't put lead pipes in to carry our water around. We know lead is bad for us. We don't want it here. But it is here and taking it out would be a lot hassle and cost a lot of money. So maybe later. Meanwhile, the lead of antisemitism keeps leaching its way into our drinking water and our bloodstreams and it's never going to go anywhere unless we do something now.

from its wikipedia page: "The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary (Latin: Agnus scythicus or Planta Tartarica Barometz) is a legendary zoophyte of Central Asia, once believed to grow sheep as its fruit. It was believed the sheep were connected to the plant by an umbilical cord and grazed the land around the plant. When all accessible foliage was gone, both the plant and sheep died." ... if you got this result, you are very in tune with the world, very sensitive to changes in your ecosystem, and very cute. also very disconcerting and creepy depending on who is perceiving you. stay epic
😂 I am not sure what to make of this result. But I don’t hate it, I guess it DOES fit? And I certainly learned something new :)

went into the Wikipedia page for Polysics cuz it has been over fifteen years, I couldn’t quite remember all the singles like I used to
(I am making a full checklist of all the albums I do and do not have, cuz I looked at my collection and I’m like WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DONT HAVE ENO???? so I’m gonna try to catch up)
And there was a new heading for Legacy which mentions a guy who said that For Young Electric Pop belongs on The Rolling Stones top 500 albums of all time which I’m like one, dude sick for saying that and two, oh this guy is following my on Twitter from the old Polysics days, small world!
So I sat thru FYEP for the first time in a long time with his quote in my head saying that it’s an accessible intro to Polysics and I’m like hmmmmmmmmmmm I doooooon’t think it’s the TOP album I’d blind rec to someone?
Like okay so the title track is a fav, but then it goes into Colon, which is a FUN song but I can imagine Hayashi’s vocalizations maaaaay turn people off initially? Like it’s some wild shit honestly rofl. Black Out Fall Out is GOAT tho, like that song alone does make me want to agree with him, that and Code 4. Get Back to 8-Bit and their cover of My Sharona are just fun and poppy, so yeah that’s some more good ammo for his thinking, for sure.
But let me raise you with: NEU
Go Ahead Now NEVER fails to get me hyped up, and honestly those next three songs are just back to back punk rock bangers. Making Sense slows things down so you can catch your breath (but man that bassline! Thank you Fumi!!) but then it roars back to life with Each Life Each End and the second half of the album. And of course, one of my eternal favorite Polysics songs: What. Honestly this entire album has an electric rock sound, couple with Hayashi’s younger punk energy that makes it an interesting listen all the way through.
Now I’m going thru their other albums to find like, solid full album recommends hmmmmm
Karate House is sublime, and sooooo many just fun rockin’ songs, tho of course Catch on Everywhere kind of requires some patience and/or watching the music video to actually find it cute if you haven’t seen/heard it before. But this feels like core Polysics sound, with songs like You-You-You, Hard Rock Thunder, Electric Surfin’ Go Go (duh), Shizuka is a Machine Doctor and of course, Polysics or Die to close it all out.
We ate the Machine is some solid good rock, and like soooooo many bangers but FUCK do I still hate DNA Junction omg. Just now I was like “it can’t possibly be that bad, it’s been nearly a decade since I’ve heard the song—” and then I click play and right away I go 😬😬😬 and it’s like fuuuuuck if that song wasn’t there then it would be so easy to recommend this album cuz dude the entire album after that is just sooooo good. Arigato, Blue Noise and Dry or Wet in particular! *holds up Kayo’s Dry or Wet sign from the live performance*
I think Absolute POLYSICS is them at their most razor sharp, I still remember when Shout Aloud (and that tease of Beat Flash) came out and it was just so WILDLY amazing. The chunk in this album that is First Aid, Fire Bison, Eye Contact, THEN Beat Flash???? Dude. I fucking LOVE it.
I guess it’s a cop out to say that Polysics or Die (especially the Vista version) is the perfect album to share with someone, because it’s a compilation album. But!! Vista was the first album I bought, I got it—holy shit it was SIXTEEN YEARS AGO this month when I saw them live. That one in particular cuz it has the DVD of music videos too, tho. Basically the music videos for Polysics are all iconic, easy to just show those to people to see how they are. I mean that’s how it started with me, with my brother showing me I My Me Mine and then not too long later, I saw them live and then that was IT. Lifelong fan.
I think it’s amazing that sixteen fucking years later, I can still sit here and enjoy this music like this. I kinda did break away from the band after Weeeeeeeeee!!! and I don’t think I’ve heard much of their stuff after that. I’ve been meaning to give it a listen, though I did get their The Vocoders album, to listen to the reimaginings of songs. The original shit, and my four hour curated playlist is mostly what I listen to lol
Also how can I contact Spotify and tell them they put BESTOISU as coming out in 2005 when it actually came out in 2010!!! We will never forget 2010 in Polysics history cuz of Kayo leaving the band (these wounds will never heal) and the legendary Budokan concert!!!!
Anyway.... TOISU!!!!
PS: it is a damn shame that coelakanth.com is down and my THOUSANDS of posts there are mostly lost to the wind. Internet Archive has SOME threads but my long history of Polysics post is gone, which I’m super sad about. I had so much research there!! 😭

For the ask game! 3, 28, 38?
Hello, Sparrow!
3. 3 films you could watch for the rest of your life and not get bored of?
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) is one of my top favourites, never fails to give me that big 'oof' every time. The feels are spot on and I love the animation, especially of the insects.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010) is another addition. The stray from 'young hapless protagonist slays beast and becomes a hero' really got me, I love the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless and all the different types of dragons, not to mention the music is beautiful.
Unfortunately, I don't have a third film to add. I have watched many movies, but it's been a while since I've done so. I haven't yet watched another movie that gives you that spark, y'know?
28. Do you collect anything?
I do collect a few things, namely seashells from the occasional trip to the shore, any funky erasers from a book fair, and I guess merch counts? I don't have much, most is bootleg but I'm fine with what I got. I don't go furiously searching for specific items, I'm not an eccentric collector yet, I'm content with just picking up anything I like as I go along.
38. Fave song at the moment?
I've got quite a few, so I'll give you 3!
Language of the Lost by RIProducer
Youtube <> Spotify
(TW: The YT video contains flashing/glitching visuals)
This song in the vocaloid genre is one that I can relate to, especially with the lyric's metaphors comparing the singer to a computer system, one that keeps reinstalling and resetting to default. It describes how one would keep going on even if they can't remember why and what dark thing from the past they want to avoid, calling out for help even if no one answers, but in the end they persevere and find a place where they belong and are loved.
2. Kiss With a Fist by Florence + The Machine
Youtube <> Spotify
(TW: Lyrics have mentions of blood and violence, as well as overall theme may imply domestic violence)
To make things clear, while this song may have implications of domestic violence and violent descriptions, the visuals are only a metaphor and there is no domestic violence actually present in the song. I can't find the artist's original statement on the song's meaning to link, but you can read it on Wikipedia here. I've pasted it here in case someone can't access.
"Kiss with a Fist" is NOT a song about domestic violence. It is about two people pushing each other to psychological extremes because they are fighting but they still love each other. The song is not about one person being attacked, or any actual physical violence, there are no victims in this song. Sometimes the love two people have for each other is a destructive force. But they can't have it any other way, because it's what holds them together, they enjoy the drama and pushing each other's buttons. The only way to express these extreme emotions is with extreme imagery, all of which is fantasism and nothing in the song is based on reality. Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" isn't actually about her bleeding and this song isn't actually about punching someone in the mouth."
This and another reason I like this song is how it describes fights between a couple, troubles they face together but bring them apart. The visuals of smashing plates on the other's head, burning the bed and spilling blood may put off most but to me, it makes sense, even of I haven't been in any such relationship. I like the tune too, it's pretty catchy.
3. Wait for It by Leslie Odom Jr. and Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton
Youtube <> Spotify
I've never watched the musical nor the film, but when I first came across this song, the lyrics got me hooked, especially:
Death doesn't discriminate Between the sinners and the saints It takes and it takes and it takes And we keep living anyway. We rise and we fall and we break And we make our mistakes. And if there's a reason I'm still alive When everyone who loves me has died I'm willing to wait for it.
The way it describes Love, Death and Life really fits.
Thank you for asking and have a great day! <3

Ok, first question: assuming this twitter tweet to be true: were they selling civilians a ton of high powered automatic weapons like AR-15s in the 60s?
Tumblr media
Im no gun expert but it didnt take me long to look at fuckin wikipedia and see that automatic weapons of that type werent being sold to consumers in the 60s in gun magazines.
See, here's one of those magazines, a reproduction of a 60s gun mag. I dont see any fuckin military grade weapons there.
https://gunsmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/G0960.pdf
Furthermore: there were gun laws in the 60s. Reagan and Nixon passed laws banning open carry and establishing background checks in the 60s. Guess why?
https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/features/2017/10/6/gun-controls-racist-past-and-present
And then, what does "about the people" mean here? How are the white supremacist men and teen boys who commit most of these shootings now are different in the 60s - how? I guess they had less reason to feel they had to be a terrorist to assert white male supremacy?
Another thing I would mention is that as long as there have been guns, there have never been "NO mass shootings."
The behavior of mass shooting - and I would say it is a BEHAVIOR, not "the people", we should be looking at here - has primarily been a huge American phenomenon from the late 90s - today (2020s). And a lot of that is copycat behavior. "Hey, those guys got a lot of attention!" And they know no one will stop them. No one will, say, STOP THEM FROM GETTING THE GUNS.
And it certainly is not JUST the guns. It certainly is ALSO the people, making the choices, to engage in the behavior. And the society around them, their response. but come the fuck on. When you SHOOT a bunch of people, with a GUN, you cant pretend the gun wasnt part of the goddamn fucking problem.
What I always wonder is, when I see this rhetoric, is why do YOU think that everyone needs unlimited access to as many guns of any type and as many bullets as they want? Seriously. Do we really think everyone should be given the fucking ability to commit a mass shooting? WHY?
And it's interesting that most of the people who think that way sure seem to be the type of people who benefit socially from white supremacist terrorism.
Anyway, entire books and documentaries have been made about why we have this mass shooting problem in America since the 90s and if any of these people truly wanted to know, they could absolutely go study it properly.

I saw you mention you use Gill Sans for text on your gifs. Are you aware of the disgusting history behind that font and its maker? Well, i say disgusting but it’s not something i really care about. I was wondering if it would affect you at all. Y’know how, we don’t use the term Asperger’s syndrome anymore because it was a nazi scientist that coined it, and cisgender was an idea given by a eugenicist, i wonder if people should feel the same about fonts created by Eric Gill. I mean this as a genuine neutral uncharged question, i am not judging you in any way :) kind regards
this ask seems worded like i'm walking into a trap, but, well, here we go, i guess...
yes, i have a book arts degree (or, well, half of one. i have a souped up graduate certificate in book arts that's less than a year's credits short of a full MFA), and in my letterpress and book design classes, we got into multiple discussions on whether or not it's ethical to use Eric Gill's fonts, considering the horrible things the man did when he was alive (for those who don't know, his wikipedia page talks about it. tw: sexual abuse).
personally, my main thought on the matter is that the man is long dead, at this point, and is in no way benefiting from continued use of his fonts, so i see using them as basically morally neutral. gill sans entered public domain in 2010. it'll always be tied to its creator, of course, but typefaces as a whole are already extremely detached from the conditions of their creation in most people's minds, and i think only a small percentage of people are able to so much as recognize the font, much less know anything about its creator. (for instance, i never received an ask criticizing my use of gill sans on my gifs until i mentioned that that's the font i use, so seemingly no one even recognized it)
unfortunately, there are a lot of awful people throughout history that have created things that we regularly use today. personally i think it's most important to consider whether continuing to use something is contributing to active harm. like financially supporting Harry Potter, for instance. or with your example of Asperger's syndrome, my understanding is that the name is far from the only problematic thing about the concept.
i think there'd be an argument against using gill sans/perpetua/joanna/etc. in the modern day if their use was triggering to others, but as far as i know, they've really become so removed from Eric Gill himself, there's not really a strong association there for most people.
maybe i'm wrong about this and there are people out there who do find it triggering to see fonts created by Eric Gill being used and showing up in the font dropdown lists and such, but even among the typeface/book nerd community i met in grad school who by and large could immediately recognize his fonts and who knew about his history, i've never met anyone who felt triggered seeing them.
my main reason for using gill sans (the italic, at least. i don't like the regular version) on my gifsets is because it's one of the default fonts available, so it's very accessible, and i feel that it is very readable (even at fairly small sizes) without looking lifeless. it also has a lot of typefaces in its family so you have a lot of options for other fonts to pair with your caption text if you need to have some other text on the gif that you want to distinguish from the caption.
i could probably find some new typefaces online somewhere that would also look great, but i have a tendency to gravitate toward the fonts i've worked with in metal lol because my first experiences learning book design were through letterpress, and gill sans is one of the few sans serif fonts our studio had, so i have more experience working with it compared to others.

have you people ever heard of Zammis fucking Clark? let me tell you all a wild story about my favorite hacker, aka, SlipStream
so this guy hacked vtech in 2015 (vtech makes kids electronics and smart devices) and stole the data of over 6 million kids by complete accident.
the hacker, known as slipstream, found that vtech's website was using fucking abode flash for their logging page, which is notoriously bad because of its vulnerability to sql injections, which basically means putting malicious code in the box instead of your password. and it fucking worked. he had root access, and downloaded as much as he could before disconnecting. it was only afterwards when he realized he had collected the data of millions of users. emails, passwords, home addresses, full names, and tons of texts and videos sent by children who were on average 7 years old! slipstream basically went "holy fucking shit this is so bad! this is a serious fucking coppa violation! I need to report this immediately!!!" so he contacted a reporter who contacted a friend to verify that the leak was legit. and after like a week of trying to contact vtech, the reporter finally got through, and vtech said they didn't even know about the attack until they were contacted. what the actual fuck
so the news gets out. vtech is in serious hot water. they shut down their servers completely for two weeks, and also secretly update their tos to say "hey if we get hacked and your data gets stolen, it's your fault for trusting us and you are not allowed to sue us. okay? :)" slipstream eventually gets tracked down and arrested by the English authorities, but is released with basically just a slap on the wrist as it's a first time offense and he hadn't sold any data nor had any intention to sell the data. vtech, also basically got a slap on the wrist from the us government. for having a highly vulnerable website, collecting the data of children under 12, not notifying the parents, and not encrypting any of the data, what are they forced to pay for this serious violation of privacy? 10 cents per kid. that's it. that's how much the us government considers your private and personal data to be worth.
anyway, that was 2015. what happened since then? well vtech is still a profitable company for some fucking reason. they claim to have undated their security, but I fucking doubt that. what about slipstream? well he went on to have a normal career and give up on hacking forever... I'm fucking lieing! he hacked mother fucking Microsoft! he leaked press releases, emails, and development versions of unreleased operating systems!
and then he went on to hack Nintendo in their biggest leak of all time, known as the Gigaleak. yes, THAT Gigaleak! the same Gigaleak that gave us so much information of development versions of Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and more. the same Gigaleak that showed off never before seen beta content. the same Gigaleak that confirmed that Luigi was planned but unfortunately cut from Super Mario 64! that Gigaleak.
he was again arrested, this time by europol, but didn't go to prison because he was autistic and they were worried about his safety. so they let him free without any computer or internet restrictions. and guess what he does. he (allegedly) hacks fucking North Korea and leaks their operating system Red Star OS 3.0, which has been so secret that before slipstream's leak, we had only a few blurry screenshots of it! (I say allegedly, because Wikipedia doesn't have a citation, but I'm pretty sure it's true as other sources for the leak cite his twitter username)
so yeah, that's the story of SlipStream. a guy who hacked multi billion dollar international corporations and god damn North Korea, all before the age of 25

*wanders in* here’s the thing that really makes me sad though. In the episode of Friends where Joey buys one of the Encyclopedias from the Penn and Teller guy (whichever one it is) he clearly actually READS it, cover to cover. He comes into the coffee shop later ready to talk about Vesuvius, Volcanoes in general, Vivisection, the Vas Deferens, the Vietnam War, etc. He read and absorbed and retained all that knowledge. But then his friends change the subject to the Korean War, and he doesn’t know about that because he didn’t buy K, and he starts nodding along, pretending to know what they’re saying. It’s very clear that he’s CAPABLE of learning and curious to know things (at least in this episode) and he wants to be able to have these conversations with them, but he grew up as (most likely) a third generation Italian-American (guessing that because he has at least 1 grandparent who only speaks Italian) in a household as the only boy with a lot of sisters, and was probably expected to help out at an early age, like we know he didn’t make it far in High School because when he and Mike are making up when they met Mike says College and Joey shakes his head and Mike says “Oh I meant high school” and Joey kind of cringes still, so likely he dropped out to help support his family, and it’s pretty clear from context clues that they don’t have a lot of financial stability or access to higher education (he says his sister is the smart one who went to college--both years!) so basically he’s got some educational disadvantages and that fact never really gets acknowledged, and his “lack of intelligence” is played off as a joke when he clearly has intelligence (like think about when the salesman shows up and says the encyclopedias are $1500 and Joey laughs and says “You think I have $1500? I’m home in the middle of the day and I have patio furniture in my apartment. I guess there’s some things you don’t get from books.” And then in the episode where Monica and Rachel’s radiator is broken and stuck “on” and he says “Whoa, mind if I turn down the heat?” and they’re like “oh like we never thought of that” because they’d spent the entire episode trying to bribe their superintendent to fix it sooner and he couldn’t because the store that carries the part he needs isn’t open until Monday, and Joey walks over to the radiator then says “Hey Monica the knob was broken so I just turned it off from underneath, hope that’s okay” and literally NONE of them thought of that) like there are other kinds of intelligence and Joey clearly has a lot of it but he gets written off as the idiot and flanderized throughout the series and anyway the episode with the encyclopedia makes me so sad because he is clearly a curious person who wants to learn and be able to keep up with the conversations his friends are having but doesn’t have the means to do so and I think that’s very telling about the way our society commodifies education and knowledge and then looks down on the people who don’t have it, and anyway I hope the Joey from that episode specifically is having fun on Wikipedia today. *wanders back out*

where other than wikipedia are you learning 1798 stuff from? I’ve been kinda interested in it for a while but i’m having trouble finding stuff, especially books, about it that i can easily access
Before I get into this, disclaimer I'm not the biggest expert on it yet, I'm learning too, so what I say isn't as concrete and my opinions will likely change.
And second disclaimer, most of these are pretty old. It isn't the most recent scholarship, mostly because that's difficult to get online and there isn't always a lot of it. Most of this older writing is still more or less sound, though.
That being said! Books, divided into government and rebel. The ones that I could find a way to access them for free online, I've linked.
Government:
You can't get this one online afaik but I would really recommend Castlereagh: A Life by John Bew. It isn't just about 1798 (though it does go over it in detail, specifically from the government's perspective, in the first part of the book), but I'd recommend giving it a read if you're interested in '98 because Castlereagh gets brought up a LOT and there are a lot of. hm. conflicting opinions on him, to put in mildly. so you're going to want to understand him at least vaguely, and this is the most recent/best biography of him that I know of.
William Pitt The Younger by William Hague. Pitt wasn't directly involved, exactly, but he was the PM at the time and it's good to understand him if you want to understand the wider political scene of the time. This is also good because it gives you an intro into who Charles James Fox was, and his relationship with the government and Pitt.
Rebel:
William Orr by Francis Joseph Bigger. This is just about Orr's execution, but that was a very influential event that you're definitely going to want to know about in detail. And theoretically, I would also recommend the rest of Bigger's The Northern Leaders of '98 series, but I can't actually find any of them online so I'm not sure how to read them.
RR Madden wrote a whole series on... pretty much all of the rebels, including the lesser known ones. His accounts of it are notable because to write them he actually interviewed people who knew the rebels (and McCracken's section was written by his sister Mary Ann McCracken! which is pretty cool).
DISCLAIMER I HAVEN'T STARTED READING THIS YET but I've got the book History of the Irish Insurrection of 1798 by Edward Hay, which seems promising.
Memoirs of Wolfe Tone, which was written by the man himself. I've juuust started reading this one.
I was literally reading Women of '98 by Constance Markievicz as I got this ask. It's really more of an essay but it's pretty good so far.
The Life And Death of Lord Edward Fitzgerald (volumes one and two are both linked) by Thomas Moore. This is about Lord Edward specifically and I really liked it.
I should probably add just to try to be as unbiased as possible that all of what I just recommended to you on the rebels was, as far as I know, written by Republicans. If you want to read Unionist opinions on the rebels of '98... uh... go ahead... but personally I've not read any so you'll have to find those yourself.
Also, neither of them were directly involved in the rebellion and neither of them were Irish but if you're doing general research and you want to understand some of the political ideas the United Irishmen were inspired by, you ought to read Paine and Wollstonecraft, specifically Rights of Man, Common Sense, and A Vindication For The Rights of Women. And *deep sigh* I guess you might also give Burke's Reflections On The Revolution In France a read, if only to understand another major political viewpoint in Ireland at the time. Having at least a basic idea of the timeline and ideas of the French Revolution is also pretty important, Wikipedia is probably fine for that but if you're a bit more interested I would recommend Liberty Or Death by Peter McPhee.
