Post work vibes this morning after a 12 hour graveyard shift. I truly feel blessed to have the opportunity to be in Guam again to work in a community where kindness is the culture. Nursing is NOT for the faint of heart but it’s rewarding when you can help someone who truly needs your skill set. To me this picture depicts that through the dark clouds and rain there’s still a chance for sunlight and rainbows. Be somebody’s sunshine and rainbow through their storm. “And this too shall pass” - 2 Corinthians 4:17 #gypsyrose #travelnurse #travelphotography #guam #guamlife #gypsynurse #rainbow #travel #travelgram #nurse #nurselife 🇬🇺⛈🌦☀️🌈💪🏽🫀🏥👩🏾⚕️🌹💊❤️🩹🇺🇸🌎📍🧳🏝🥰 (at Guam Memorial Hospital) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cchg87HLO7Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I can’t have a dog, so when one approaches me, I basically adopt it for the time being.

I remember falling into the water
Panic rushed over me almost as quickly as the salty water engulfed my face. I inhaled what felt like a gallon of warm seawater and sand as my eyeballs burned all the way to the back of my skull. To where my brain was.
My arms and legs desperately reached out into oblivion for anything. I could almost make out voices through the commotion as I struggled desperately to regain control of the mental and physical systems running this fairly new body.
"Stand up!"
My right arm went cold and numb as my bicep was squeezed and nearly yanked out of my shoulder socket. I ascended to the surface. All systems go. Eyes still burning.
"Stand up, it's not deep!"
I dug my heels into the warm sand as my center of gravity found its place. The water was about waist deep. My cousins laughed as I almost drowned to death.
This is probably the earliest memory I can recall. I'm not sure how old I was at the time. Two or three, maybe. But that day lives on vividly, a bright blue sky strewn with patches of thick white and gray clouds. After every wet sniffle, the smell of BBQ chicken and ribs accompanied by burnt shrimp shells and fish scales.
Aunties eagerly greeting everyone with "Hafa boy, come 'n eat now!" All while waving papaya branches over the food to shoo the flies away. Cha-cha music bounces out of 12" Kicker speakers from behind my cousin's lifted Toyota 4x4. It's a familiar memory I'm sure we can all somehow relate to.
Hafa adai, kamusta, aloha, and welcome to my blog!
I'm from Guam, but currently live in San Francisco. I've been haunted by the ghost of the island boy I used to be. I started this blog to reconnect with the culture I was born into and had reluctantly left behind in pursuit of mainland dreams. As I pass on and rediscover my Guamanian heritage with my new family, I'll share my impressions of island life through the lens of a Guamanian transplant, now living in the mainland. The mission is to help ease the mahalang (homesick) feelings of my fellow transplants and give insight and perspective to those interested in our island.
I will share interpretations of favorite Pacific island food recipes for those looking for a quick cure for mahalang feelings or to just simply show off to your haole friends. I also want to share tasty recipes I've picked up throughout my travels and living out here, you know, to show off to my local friends. We will also discuss some of the current events and concerns of our Pacific island community and explore ways we can be active and contribute as the away team. This might be interesting. We'll see what happens.
I hope I can make this blog a welcoming venue of insight and perspective, a cultural center for my island familia all over the world.
Aye, 'cus it's the maolek thing to do!
Thank you, si yu'os ma'åse, mahalo, and maraming salamat po!
