anyways this session has really solidified the reason quackity chose the people he did for me. because i remember connor getting an ask a while back complaining about how they wanted quackity to add people who would actually play instead of his friends (ie wilbur) who may not be active as often and. it rubbed me the wrong way for a lot of reasons, but mainly because it's clear quackity didn't choose just his friends. sure, it was a bonus that he was close to them, but quackity's first priority has never been "who can minmax the server and stream every day?" it's been "who is a good storyteller/who can tell a good story?"

because that's the core of it. the qsmp isn't about streaming or playtime, not necessarily. it's about the story. during the first announcement, people were surprised to see dantdm and jaidenanimations on the cast, because dan isn't really in quackity's circle and jaiden is barely an mcyt even if you push it. but you know what they were? storytellers. dan was a part of so many people's childhoods with his mod showcases and miscellaneous videos, all of which had lore. jaiden creates entire stories from video games! games with pre-determined stories that she has to spin into something new, something of her own.

and then the brazilians were added. some of them still did minecraft content, sure, but not all of them. but they were still storytellers. cellbit has his entire rpg. pac and mike have multiple roleplay series. and when you get to the french, the pattern repeats. baghera, for example, with her gta roleplay. not all of them are minecrafters at their core, but they are storytellers, and for most of them, improvisational ones at that. the same, of course, goes for the newest batch. pol is a filmmaker. vshojo has insane, deeply complex lore for all their vtubers. bagi is adept at ttrpg. sure, people being able to log on often is a necessity, but what good would that be if it ended up sacrificing quality for quantity?

this session really nailed it for me because you could see their expertise shine through. i feel like, even still, a lot of mcrp is seen as "lesser" because of its medium, or because of how it can switch between roleplay and just creators hanging out. roleplay is only typically praised and called to attention when it's highly emotional, and the same goes for the storytelling, with a heavier focus on how well creators can utilize angst as opposed to other moments. but this was treated differently. the silliness of minecraft was gone. what was previously disregarded came into light, like how fucking smart foolish is when writing characters and how well quackity is able to play into the story while staying true to his character, among other things! i just think quackity's brilliance in selecting his server members isn't talked about enough, because holy shit has he done a fantastic job

I would argue that GTA Online is similar to Assetto Corsa the way @animeomelette described it. There are opportunities for great racing to be had in there, but one has to look for them. Mods create even more possibilities.

Trying to make a racing game out of the GTA 5 singleplayer is a fairly futile effort, Online is a different story though. Ten years of DLC have built a car list that rivals and beats, in my opinion many big-name dedicated racing games in diversity. If you can overlook that none of the cars are licensed and all of them are about 60% as fast as IRL cars, you're bound to find one or twenty that you like. The dev-created tracks as well as most of the races out of "Community Jobs" are unfortunately boring by themselves, with your only form of hellish "entertainment" being racer-created carnage. However, GTA Online has a pretty amazing job creator, and some people can put together truly amazing racetracks in it. But yeah, you gotta look for those.

Now would be the time to mention a YouTuber by the name of Broughy1322, and especially his Community Verified series. Its entire purpose is showcasing high-quality racetracks across all 3 platforms. He even has a spreadsheet with every track that passed the high bar of community verification, as well as many more that fell short. Oh and did I mention that the series has been going under different names since 2016? That's a lot of tracks.

Then there's the question of finding a good group to race with. You could look for a GTA-racing discord server or some other community (there has to be one right?). Or what I personally have done, join a car meet server, become a host, and start hosting racing playlist meets. Or a secret third thing, perhaps something I haven't thought of. Either way, finding a decent group of consistent racing buddies is not easy.

And that's where, for PC specifically, a little thing called FiveM comes in. As a Playstation boi, I'm not intricately familiar with it - I gather it's a multiplayer mod for GTA Online with different specific modded servers. Like Minecraft servers, that is the connection I can draw anyway. I know about two racing-focused ones, Project Homecoming and 8th Gear. My man Broughy1322 has covered both on his channel, Project Homecoming extensively. Both servers aim to practically transform GTAO into a racing game, which includes but isn't limited to:

Incorporating tracks from the vanilla game into the server

Removing limitations on the job creator available to players

Adding heaps of player-created vehicle mods ranging from liveries for vanilla cars, different versions of vanilla cars to fully custom cars

Project Homecoming splits cars into classes, in which cars are balanced with each other - there are significantly more classes than in the base game. The team even goes through the cars and edits their performance if needed (see: "the faster Rapid GT" or "the faster Penumbra" if you ever hear Broughy talking about them)

Removing advanced handling flags from all cars (things that tell cars how to handle, they make many cars drive like shit)

Oh! I forgot! Not removing the option to buy 23% of all cars in the game.

Tl;dr: If you really want it to, GTA Online can be a pretty sick racing game. PC players can look into FiveM and specifically the servers Project Homecoming and 8th Gear.

fuck I mean. my entire library probably. though honestly the most fun I have with racing games are emulated, but I feel like that should be separate.

art of rally - gorgeous rally game. tough to start with due to very tight controls, but really satisfying to learn. I've spoken lots about it here before, just look for the "#art of rally" tag. no multiplayer, in fact there's only your car on the road, but it's really really good

Horizon Chase Turbo - it's one of those SNES-style racing games where the car is (kind of) static on the screen and the road is the one moving. it can get pretty hard but I think it's worth it due to the amount of content it has. hundreds of different tracks, great music, a lot of cars that are each very different, a lot of modes, three DLC campaigns, and 4-player multiplayer in every game mode.

The Crew 2 - open world racing game with all sorts of types of vehicles. it has a GIANT map with different US states. I honestly prefer it to Forza Horizon. it runs pretty well for a game of that scale, honestly! only buy this on discount.

Circuit Superstars - top-down circuit racer. it's really fun! there's a lot of different car types that all feel very different, online works pretty well (I only played with a friend tho I cant find people online). my favorite thing about it is just doing laps on time trials to try and cut my record time. it is pretty fun.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - Mario Kart clone with SEGA characters (and some cameos). I like it a lot over Mario Kart because of its tighter controls and its Mission Mode, which is where most of my playtime went towards (I especially recommend Drift and Traffic events). Online mode also works super well. (note: this game has crashes in computers with Nvidia RTX cards. please look up this specific issue to find a patch or just ask me to find it for you)

Forza Horizon 4 and 5 - open world racing games that don't run super well and have a lot of annoyances but they are The Big Ones for no small reason. impossibly huge car list, very good handling controls, and a satisfying loop. plus, in FH5 there's plenty of Fate liveries to find as I've been putting them in every car I have 💀

V-Rally 4 or any other rally game you find that looks good - V-Rally 4 in specific has a lot of annoying performance issues but fuck I mean it's pretty fun. gorgeous game, great controls (in a controller!), fun cars and rally courses. sometimes levels can honestly feel like roller coasters more than anything, as I've taught myself to just take corners automatically, without thought. it goes EXTREMELY cheap on discount (Steam is getting a big sale in a week btw) but there's other rally games out there like Dirt Rally (which I haven't played yet) that may be worth it over it. I don't know!

overall though it disappoints me to say, it's not very easy to find truly great car games on PC, at least nowadays. I do like these games, and there's some others I liked that I don't have much to say about (NFS Heat, Assetto Corsa, Pixar Cars) but I think for racing fans, unless you want Simulation stuff which I really don't, you've gotta keep old console games with you too. PS1, PS2 and PSP emulators are your friends.

also Grand Theft Auto V and Online are great car games but I do not care for their racing modes. I think they're boring at best and "oh my god I hope all of these people die" at worst.
