I’m gonna need some facts for hearts and wings

1. here’s the breakdown of who knows what at the start of the fic: anders knows that Charlie and Jake are together but thinks that Matt doesn’t know anything about anyone. he also doesn’t know that matt dated Charlie. Matt doesn’t know that Jake is dating Charlie and also doesn’t know that anders also likes guys (wow poor guy was in the dark). Jake and Charlie both know everything but just elect not to tell Matt anything which brings me to my next point

2. I’d like to say there’s some kind of big moment where Matt and Charlie talk it out and idk express some feelings, but that doesn’t really ever happen. Jake is maybe the in-between man in some senses- I mean, clearly everyone figures out what happens in the end. But Charlie never apologizes for keeping his relationship with Jake a secret because he just can’t open that box with Matt. That hurts Matt’s feelings in a sense, but also? He doesn’t want to go there with Charlie either. After a few months it all rolls over, and that four hang out more and more until things feel pretty normal.

3. Matt and Anders go on a trip to Ireland. Is this relevant to the story hearts and wings? no. is it something that happens in this universe? yes. they go really low-key and buy nice sweaters and go see castles and giant’s causeway and drink a lot of beer.

4. The dynamic between them always shifts and changes during the regular season, and Anders was worried about how that would affect his and Matt’s young relationship, but Matt is super intentional about checking in and giving Anders space when there’s a lot of Together Time but also still being like… a good boyfriend and doing random nice things and providing an appropriate amount of hugs

5. matt knows it’s real when anders makes him his own spotify playlist

Matt lights the last candle in the living room and adjusts the volume on the speaker, before settling in on the couch with the hot chocolate he made and a warm blanket. It’s Christmas Eve, and for the first time in a few years at least, he’s spending it alone. Even last year during the pandemic Anders had made it back out to Boston earlier in December to start getting ready for training camp in January. But this year… he had asked Anders what his plans were when they were able to see each other in Buffalo earlier this season, and Anders had said he was going back home to Wisconsin. Matt tried not to let himself be disappointed, it makes sense for him to go home, and he wouldn’t want to take that away from him. At least has plans for tomorrow with his own family, he tries to reason with himself, but he can’t deny. It’s a little lonely tonight.

He hums along to the Christmas playlist he put on and takes a sip of his hot chocolate, and he’s just debating if he should melt a candy cane into it when he gets an incoming call. He smiles to himself when he sees it’s from Anders.

“Hey,” he says when he picks up. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas to you too,” Anders says cheerily. It sounds like he’s outside, Matt can hear cars going by in the background. “How are things?”

“Oh, you know.” He stands up and walks into the kitchen, his hot chocolate definitely needs peppermint.

“Yeah. It’s nice to have a full season again, but having more than three days off for the holidays would be nice too.”

“Definitely.”

He unwraps the candy cane and breaks it into little pieces, then swirls them into the drink with a spoon.

“What are you up to tonight?” Anders asks after another minute or so.

“Not much,” he admits. “I’ve got plans tomorrow but tonight is pretty quiet. But what about you, how’s your family, how’s Wisconsin?”

Anders pauses uncharacteristically. “I, uh, well. I think it’s pretty cold,” he says. “But, uh. I’m not in Wisconsin right now.”

Matt stops stirring his drink. “You’re not?”

“Nope.”

“Well, where are you?”

A truck blares its horn outside Matt’s window, and it echoes through the phone on a slight delay, which… wait.

“Anders, are you… are you here?”

“I’m here, my love.”

Matt drops the spoon onto the counter with a loud clatter. There’s no way, right?

“Can you let me in, please? It’s freezing out here,” Anders says, and, oh, right, he probably should do that.

“Of course, I’ll be right down.” He sets his mug down and puts on some shoes, then grabs his keys and practically runs out the door and down the stairs. When he gets to the front door of his apartment complex, sure enough, Anders is standing outside, wearing the hat Matt had given him two years ago and the biggest smile he’s seen. He quickly opens the door and lets him into the lobby.

“You’re here,” he whispers. He still can’t quite believe it.

Anders nods, cheeks slightly red from the cold. “I’m here.” He opens his arms for a hug, and Matt wastes no time getting into them. It’s been far too long since they’ve seen each other, but when he puts his head in the crook of Anders’ neck, and Anders wraps his arms around him and holds him so tightly, the way they’ve always fit together, it’s like they never left.

“What are you doing here?” he asks. “I thought you were going home.”

Anders hugs him tighter. “You’re home to me,” he whispers back, pressing a kiss to the top of Matt’s head.

“You been practicing that one?” he laughs as he pulls back so he can look Anders in the eye.

“Maybe,” he admits. “I had a couple, Smitty helped me practice.”

“You saw Smitty?”

“Yeah. I crashed at his place last night, I couldn’t get an Airbnb so he said I could. I was gonna ask Jake but he’s back in Edmonton, and I wasn’t sure who else was around, besides, you know, like, Bergy, but I didn’t want to interrupt his family time or whatever he has planned -”

“Hey.”

Anders stops talking, and Matt puts a hand on his cheek.

“I’m so glad you’re here, honey,” he says.

“I am, too. I missed you so much.”

Matt starts to lean up to kiss him, but he’s interrupted by the ding of the elevator as a family steps out into the lobby and heads out the front door. He looks back up at Anders once they’re gone.

“You wanna come upstairs?” he asks. “I just made some hot chocolate.”

Anders smiles back and nods. “I’d love to.”

As Matt takes his hand to lead him up the stairs back to his apartment, he can’t help but smile. Christmas miracles really do happen.

alright, i’m gonna start out with this beauty.

on this “alt.” playlist you can find alternative hits such as jack johnson’s “banana pancakes” and “half of my heart” by john mayers juxtaposed with my chem’s “welcome to the black parade” and everyone’s favorite, “mr. brightside” by the killers. jokes aside i actually enjoy most if not all of the songs on this playlist, but it’s just such an… eclectic mix that i really don’t know what kind of headspace a person needs to be in to put this together. reason #2986 why we need to be asking matt grzelcyk if he’s okay more often.

next up, your classic hockey player throwback playlist.

not much to report here if i’m being honest. your typical wiz khalifa, kanye, nelly, a$ap rocky, etc. honestly i just don’t listen to enough rap to be able to analyze this playlist more closely, but based on what i’ve seen on other hockey players’ spotify pages, this is pretty standard

COUNTRY BOYYY I LOVE YOUUUUU. you had to know this was coming. love to see the dan + shay, laughing at luke bryan’s song that i just discovered via this playlist called “huntin’, fishn’ and lovin’ every day” like cmon luke, at least use the oxford comma. also there’s a thomas rhett song on here and my friends and i have entirely memed his song “beer with jesus” so seeing him pop up was a fun little treat

my fAVORITE

this playlist is g o o d (fair reminder that this entire analysis is based off of my music taste tho so “good” is subjective). this playlist, along with the earlier inclusion of “welcome to the black parade,” is the reason why i’m positive i would vibe with matt. and for all you grzork kiddos out there, this playlist overlaps SO MUCH with anders’s music taste that it’s kind of ridiculous. and this wouldn’t usually be remarkable bc all hockey players know is listen to rap and country and eat hot chips, but the music on chin~chillin (the nAME) is def not as common. anyways, based on what i’ve seen anders probably has the best music taste on the bruins, or at least thinks he does, so i’m head cannoning that bjork probably considers his spotify to be the GOAT and slowly got matt to listen to quinn xcii and bryce vine and all them. there’s even a 5sos song on here which is so great. 10/10 overall, someone needs to get matt into the band camino i think he’d really like “see through” or really any of their music
