welcome to a bit of backseat coaching ft. me, hannah, someone who can only skate forwards and occasionally successfully stops on the ice without using a wall!!

basically, if i were running the canucks power play and actually wanted it to succeed, this is who i would put out and where i’d put them:

boeser (netfront/bumper)

debrusk (netfront/bumper)

lekkerimäki (left half wall)

pettersson (right half wall)

hughes (point/wherever else he wants to go)

visual explanation here:

this way petey is on his one-timer side, you have either brock/jake in front of the net to help tip shots and/or screen the goalie and the other of brock/jake is in the bumper spot where they can shoot from, receive/distribute the puck, or help screen. lekkerimäki is a shooting threat on the left side, and quinn is doing quinn things from wherever he wants (but mainly the point). the players won’t be totally stagnant so you might end up w quinn on a side at some point, petey near the net, etc., but generally this is the formation that nhl teams try to set their power play up in.

this is an example of them basically in that formation from the utah game, aside from petey/quinn being out of their “default” spots (sorry for the bad pic quality, idk how to screenshot on sportsnet):

(brock wasn’t able to come on at the beginning so that’s why suter is there).

notice how garland is along the left wall, meaning he is in one of the shooting positions? and he always seems to end up there? this is a problem bc look, i love garly, but he isn’t a shooting threat 😭 he’s great at getting the puck and passing it off but ultimately, none of the PKers are worried about him scoring from there. regardless, they are at least basically in a formation that could generate a goal.

now, here is the same power play near its end, when they are literally desperate for a goal:

notice: lekkerimäki is out there, but is in some sort of net front/bumper-esque role (and is being actively maneuvered away from the net). he is a kind of small rookie with an amazing shot — putting him somewhere where he has to fight for his position and is gonna have a hard time getting a shot off is not utilizing him well 😭

also notice: brock, bless him, was attempting to dash to the net but he wasn’t already there. kief is off in the corner looking pretty. because of that, absolutely nobody was in position to screen the goalie, making petey’s shot a valiant effort but ultimately not very dangerous — and he even waited a moment to see if his teammates would get into a better position. there was also nobody there to tip the shot, or grab a rebound. again, they were desperate for a goal!

this power play was 4min, so we were always going to see some odd player combos — the player deployment at the very end isn’t necessarily what i’m concerned with. but when they deploy a non-shooter in a shooting position from the opening faceoff of a power play, just because he works hard and is good at zone entries (which petey and quinn are more than capable of), imo you’re not setting them up for the biggest chance of success.

anyway! maybe our pp will have the exact same players as always tmr and it’ll score and make me look silly (i would be totally okay w this scenario).
