Little update on the balcony garden!
Things have really come in nicely. The oleander tree took a little break from blooming during our heat wave, but I can see new buds all over the place so I'm sure it will be covered in flowers again soon.
All of my little pots are great - I particularly like the combo of the dark leaved "Mocca cherry" non-stop begonia with begonia rex "Gryphon" and the bright green ostrich ferns and coleus "Salsa Verde". I mostly wanted lush and tropical looking, and that one pot really nails it.
While it's a totally different style, I also really like my mini Japanese maple with the rock garden, scotch moss and maidenhair fern.
Feel free to ask me about my plants!

Previously under-appreciated plant post: undocumented glow up edition! (By that I mean I don’t have good baby photos of these two)
First is as close to an impulse buy as I’ll get, a “gryphon/Pegasus” hybrid begonia I got at the end of last summer. She was brutalized by squirrels/sparrows/who the hell knows what during her last days outside this fall, and brought inside to endure an uncertain fate. Long story short, she’s thriving and I love her. Hand for scale on the leaves, they’re pretty sizable, and the glow they get when the sun hits them just so… *chef’s kiss*
Last photos are of my ludisia discolor. She’s doubled in size (understatement?) and is still blooming for a month and then some. I waited too late to repot: there’s a stem growing out a drain hole now. Yet another thing to take care of next month…

Look at how "quickly" the gryphon begonia springs up from a good soaking - it's up most of the way in 2 hours. As a bonus, you also get the oxalis-wakes-up show. In their natural environments, begonia species originate mainly in the tropical and subtropical areas of the world, including South and Central America, Africa and Asia.
Sadly many of these natural habitats are being bulldozed, and the Queensland Begonia Society members are dedicated to growing the species that would otherwise disappear.
No begonia has ever been discovered growing naturally in Australia. However, we have many keen begonia growers who do have, amongst their collections, many of the threatened species from other lands, which will be featured at the show.
Some of these will grow here under our normal conditions and others require very special cultural conditions and need to be grown in terrariums to survive here. These will also be featured at the Show.
On display will be hundreds of the beautiful hybrid varieties that are favourites of most gardeners who love the colourful and varied foliage and flowers of these spectacular plants. Many of these hybrids have been created and introduced by our own Queensland members and also other Australian growers. Thus, new varieties are introduced into our collections.

What is a monstera do they harvest it to make Monster energy drink
I know I’ve pointed out Monsteras in a few movies we’ve watched but it’s usually a single leaf in a vase for some fucking reason, here’s a picture of mine (with my snake plant and gryphon begonia)
Tumblr media
(It’s the one on the left in the tulip bowl)
Apparently their fruits taste like a wacky combination of like every other fruit and people love them so they SHOULD be harvested to make Monster energy drinks and the fact that they aren’t is a goddamn crime

My mom gave me one of her umbrella plants! Its enormous, and I love it. Little doggo also loves it.
Then I've got my prayer plant, dragon's tongue and below is my gryphon begonia. The dragon's tongue is an odd plant, and it feels crispy. I'm really hoping I'm not killing it 😶

I don’t have a picture on my new phone of what my gryphon begonia looked like before. But this was spring time - it lost all of its foliage after flowering down to bare stalks. I wanted to throw it away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brought it outside and it seems to be perking back with some new growth!! Yay! I can’t imagine those leaves will stay that vibrant red/pink color but they sure look neat!
