taking a look at my activity and i noticed that someone liked a post i had made a while back about reading the Symphony of Ages series by Elizabeth Haydon. and i thought i should probably add to that post, because i did finally get my hands on the last three books. and oh boy let me tell you...

i hated how that series ended! absolutely hated it.

like, yes, okay, i get it. they are effectively immortal characters. unless they are killed outright (and not even then) they were going to live forever. and they were not species who were supposed to even live exceptionally long. except for ashe (but only by taking on a completely different form).

but what she did to grunthor? that was horrible.

and i don't mean just the nature of his death, or why he died. the stories never shied away from those kind of things. but it was the way it was address on page. on one hand, i hated it. that was never the way it should have happened (not to him, not to anyone honestly). but on the other hand, it was a very good representation of the diminishment of heroes from one generation down to the next and the next and the next...

i am very glad that his actual death wasn't show on the page. but the description of what they did to him, how they probably tortured him in order to kill him. and then the desecration of his body after? even grunthor would pick the bear, i think.

rhapsody's visceral grief, horror, and rage was very real. it was exactly how you would expect her to react. a woman who survived prostitution as a child, and the terrible sadism of possessive, obsessive narcissist? learning that one of her oldest friends, her very first protector, had been so savagely murdered and his remains so abused... all because of a misunderstood and off hand comment her husband made? oh yeah, i would be seeking the title of "widow" before "divorcee" as well.

fine, that also gave ashe what he wanted. gave him his moment for transformation (and thus condemned him, too, to a solely earthly existence. burning away what was human in him and any chance at moving to an afterlife). his execution satisfied the firblog. the fact that their First Woman, their king's assumed consort even after she married ashe, was the one to dispense that justice was right in their eyes.

but after that... after losing grunthor and then ashe... and her children not yet ready to hear or listen to what had actually happened... she was given, what? a few days? just a few days to go "yep, nope, this is it for me"? and to turn to achmed and ask him to do it for her? after he had lost his oldest friend and ally, here was his second oldest friend, the woman he had been in love with for millennia (who knew he was in love with her, and was also in love with him - just not from the stupidity of childhood)...

he would have given her the world. waited any amount of time she needed. been supportive (tho possibly distant at times, because yeah sometimes he had healthy boundaries, sometimes none of them did) of her through her grief. but no... we can't have nice things. so out comes some re-written scrap of prophecy from an undone timeline to kill her instead.

and then achmed's story! omg! they undid every bit of growth and development for him! literally sent him all the way back to the very beginning of his journey both mentally, physically, and developmentally! he was sent on a suicidal self imposed mission! he left his new born baby behind! (if rhapsody hadn't died, she'd have killed him just for doing that!).

and opening that real but metaphysical door at the underside of the world to drain the ocean into the hallows of the earth? bullshit. bullshit bullshit bullshit.

i have more i could say. a lot more i should say. but i just don't have the mental energy for it. and honestly, i haven't re-read the last book in a little while. i am still so fucking mad about it. fuck her for destroying the characters we loved because she was bored and probably under contract to finish the series.

I’ve been working on commissions lately. Here’s one I finished about a month or so ago for a client on twitter :D. Grunthor is a fire genasi blood hunter!

Are there any Symphony of Ages fans interested in forming a new community to discuss the books?  Symphony of Ages is a high fantasy series by Elizabeth Haydon.  The series started in ’99 with Rhapsody: Child of Blood and had a few hiatuses along the way, but was completed in 2016.

I started reading this series when I was in high school (I’m 31 now) and kept up with it through book 5 (Elegy), but lost track of it during the hiatus.  The reason I actually found it again was through Audible.  I was shocked that several more books had been published and I immediately decided to start at the beginning and go all the way through the end.  After finishing, I was so sad to see that the fandom is practically non existent on the web now.  This is possibly the biggest “I’m late to the party” moment I’ve ever felt in my life! I thought perhaps there are other people in this same boat who would be interested in geeking out about it together online?  It was actually very interesting getting back into this fandom as a true adult, I think I have a better appreciation of the characters and world building now than I did 15 years ago.

(As a general warning, the series does contain adult content, situations, language, and violence. The villains are basically 100% villains and very cruel.  I just want to throw a general warning out there for potential new readers in case that isn’t your cup of tea.  The series starts off with pretty strong romance novel qualities, but once it gets going it really isn’t the main focus.)

I’m mostly throwing this out as a gauge of interest.  Possibilities that come to mind are a blog for people who have completed the series to discuss things and share fan art etc., and another blog for a read along sort of thing without spoilers that fans who haven’t finished the series can enjoy.  I had so much fun diving back into this world even after so long has passed and I hope to find some other fans who feel the same way.  Please comment, follow, or message me if you are interested!

14. UNDER PRESSURE crush injuries | beaten | force Rhapsody (Symphony of Ages)

Me?  Forgetting almost everything about how a book series works but writing prompts for my sunshine bard/grim assassin otp anyway?  It’s more likely than you think.

The world was getting lighter by degrees.  It was such a relief.  So much weight pinned Rhapsody, seemingly from every direction, that she had barely been able to draw breath.  She had been growing dizzy there in the dark.  At last, she could hear voices over the roaring in her ears.

“There.”

“I know, I see ‘er.  Oi, careful!”

“Keep going.  She can’t breathe.”

“Forgot you can tell all that.  Believe me, I’m movin’.”

Little by little, the weight fell away from her—earth, yes, once the ceiling of a tunnel.  She was under Ylorc.  Strangely, she hurt more rather than less once she was unburied, as if the crushing rock had been holding her together.  Each inhale ended too soon with a knife of pain.  Someone knelt over her, and she managed to focus on Achmed’s dark, piercing eyes.

“I’ll get a healer,” Grunthor said from nearby.  “Don’t move ‘er.  If ‘er spine’s—”

“I know that,” Achmed hissed.

Grunthor left with thunderous, rapid footsteps.  Rhapsody managed to wheeze, “Don’t.”  Achmed frowned, and she continued, “Don’t be… so sharp with him.  It’s alright.”

His frown turned to a furious sneer.  In an even more cutting tone, he said, “What do you think you were doing?  We knew there could be traps and you, blindly, stupidly—”

“But we… we decided it was… worth the risk.”

“You decided it was worth the risk.  I told you to stay with us.”

Rhapsody smiled blearily.  That was often how Achmed remembered arguments.  She closed her eyes, trying to breathe shallowly through the pain and to tell her body it would be well.  “You worry too much,” she breathed.

“With you, there is no such thing.”  When she didn’t answer, there was a cool, dry touch on her cheeks.  She wondered at it mutely as Achmed cupped her face in his hands.  Rhapsody had always been affectionate, and Achmed had stopped protesting his share of her embraces and such.  But he so rarely returned the favor.  It was lovely.  It was the only thing that didn’t hurt.  “Rhapsody.”  And how often did he say her name, really, especially like that?  If there was any good way to be a mess of bruises and fractures, she had found it.

“Rhapsody,” Achmed said, louder.

Rhapsody opened her eyes.  “Oh,” she murmured.  He straightened slightly, scowling hard at her.  Everything came back to anger for him; to know how he felt, you just had to know where that anger came from.  It helped to see all of his expression, as she could now.  He must have bared his face to better sense her.  Rhapsody debated on which arm was more usable and, at length, lifted her right hand.  Dreamily, through the strain of moving, she said, “I don’t… see your face enough.”

She remembered belatedly how sensitive Achmed’s skin was and halted her hand.  Her fingertips hovered over his cheek.  That was probably as good as a touch to him.

Achmed sighed as if she were being a particular nuisance.  And then he took her wrist in a light, precise grip and guided it toward him.  Rhapsody’s eyes widened as her palm pressed to his cheek.  With some effort, she relaxed her fingers from the rigid grip of surprise and lingering pain, so that she could rest them against his cheekbone and temple.

“That’s not hurting you, is it?” he asked.  “You shouldn’t be moving.”

“No,” she lied.  “Is it hurting you?”

A corner of his mouth twitched.  “No.”

She might have smiled.  She certainly tried to.  But she was dizzy again—no, something worse than that.  Everything hurt, and no matter how she forced her limited breathing, her middle hurt as if it were still being crushed.  Achmed’s face grew distant and unclear.  Achmed tilted her head up in his hand.  She felt him lean closer; he kept her hand pressed to his cheek.  She wished he would do this more.  She wished he would call her name more.

“Rhapsody.  Rhapsody!”

Rift Apart State of Play breakdown

Here is a breakdown of the Rift Apart gameplay from the State of Play and the thoughts I had while watching it. SPOILERS and LONG POST WARNING !

We see Rivet activating an infobot. I don’t know what the writing on it says, hopefully they release an alphabet for that language soon. Its funny seeing Clank in a semi backpack form and seeing him waddle around while moving.

The bug ship from the recent trailer appear as it was looking for the infobot but instead it grabs Clank and flies away. You can see Rivet’s arm being effected by the magnetic tractor beam which makes me wonder if that will be a big weakness for her during gameplay ? This is the start of that segment we saw in the new trailer since we saw Rivet (who was Clank less there) chase that ship down and as seen here she takes it out. I bet while she is chasing Clank, Clank will sabotage the ship from the inside given that the ship is still missing a piece before crashing.

After what seems to be the opening title we cut to Ratchet in Nefarious City and we see how mission objections will be show in the game. Him saying Clank is charming was adorable !

One major change to the gameplay you can notice is the HUD, as its smaller, the XP bars are orange, and instead of the weapon XP being a circle around the weapons icon, its also a bar. They also grouped the number of bolts and raritanium together. To be honest I’m not a big fan of the new HUD.

Cool to see Ratchet still fooling around when he isn’t moving, and nice to see bolt cranks.

Ratchet: Please let there be good news behind here (see Nefarious statue) XD

“Does that mean, there are TWO Nefariouses now !” that one line just summarized what the R&C fandom has been thinking since the announcement trailer for Rift Apart XD

Ratchet has his hoverboots ! I though we were going to get them much later but this is awesome. Its also great as this could make Ratchet’s gameplay different from Rivets. I wonder if he can use them to high jump since Clank will be missing ?

Nice change having Ms. Zurkon be the weapon vendor for the game. Still hoping Mr. Zurkon won’t be a weapon. I can tell she is going to be a fun little character. She was actually seen in the new trailer but I missed it, thank you VTNVIVI for pointing this out.

Those holograms on Ms. Zurkon walls are the weapons we will be using in the game, and sadly it shows that the Buzz Blades and Warmonger will return, which is kinda annoying but I could think of worse weapons to bring back.

Ms. Zurkon thinking Ratchet is part of the resistance makes me think that other Lombaxes from this AU are a part of the resistance hence her confusion.

Ratchet can not only wall run like Rivet but he can also dash mid air like her, which is interesting but I’m still hoping for some differences between there gameplay.

I think those bouncing platforms were a reference to Sunset Overdrive ? Also before jumping on them you can see a Lombax face painted on a crate, which I think confirms there are more AU Lombaxes in the resistance.

There are a lot of Megacorp logos in the city, I wonder how this version of the company will be different from the one we know from Going Commando ?

You can hear Nefarious talk in the background which is cool, and there is a moment where he states he going to enact something called operation dreamstar ? I think that’s what its called. I wonder if its something serious or if he’s just indulging as being an Emperor. You can also briefly see that Lombax billboard I mentioned in the Clank bio and it looks like he was turned into a robot.

The Nefarious Day Spa, funny and reasonable as I remember Vorselon having one in ACIT.

I think the Phantom is a AU version of Skidd McMarx cause not only does it sound like him a bit but I remember that in UYA he had the codename “Shadow Dude”

The dash after images DO draw enemy fire, cool ! The ammo crates have changed in appearance, which is a nice little change.

The Nefarious Juggernauts looks awesome, they remind me of those mini bosses you fight from time to time in TOD and ITN. Its also cool how we can be randomly be transported to other dimensions while fighting. I think the place Ratchet ended up is that place in the trailer where he is hoverbooting and used that ball ramming weapon.

Alien snappers from the 2002/2016 will be in the game, yet for some reason there spitting out stuff.

Nice touch having Rivet’s HUD have different colors then Ratchet’s, being orange while her XP is purple. Speaking of purple you can see purple versions of horny toads here.

So the riding bugs are called Speetles, good to know for the future.

We finally get to see some new weapons. First is the Ricochet, which is that ball colliding weapon I just mentioned and as seen in the new trailer. Mr. Fungai, a weapon that as stated in the trailer “attacks and potentially distracts enemies”. He seems to be the Mr. Zurkon of the game but I don’t mind as I rather have him then Zurkon again. Then we have the Megaton Collider which “charges up to fire a beam that will go through multiple enemies” sounds great for dealing with a tons of enemies that are hurdled together.

Dimensional pockets, that must be that space between dimensions I talked about in the trailer breakdown. Also even though Clank is missing an arm, he still has 3 propellers.

New alien race, I wonder if there an AU version of Kerchu ?

So the Goons-4-Less ARE Thugs-4-Less, just rebranded which I recall VTNVIVI stating as a possible theory on one of his videos. I bet he will be surprised by this.

Nice to see the Megaton Collider in action, I think its gonna be a favorite of mine.

Before the demo ends, you can see a unstable rift, I wonder if this means Clank will have to fix it ?

We then get a lot info all at once so here are a few things I saw like how it seems Ratchet can hoverboot at a leisurely pace or just like in past games while exploring open worlds.

Though not much was shown, its nice to see some of Clank’s interdimensional powers and its cool to see that his segments might be like the Great Clock puzzles from ACIT.

These Glitch challenges look interesting, I wonder what they will be like ? Could that be what Rivet was doing to the infobot or is this the hacking mechanic of the game ? Also who is Glitch ? Is she Rivet’s Clank of sorts ?

Arena challenges confirmed. Its also confirmed that you will be fighting all kinds of enemies from the dimensions you visit, which is nice as we will have more variety then just getting the same few enemy types over and over again.

Aerial combat looks cool, especially since we can ride creatures instead of ships, though it would be cool to be able to fly Aphelion again.

Gold bolts return, no surprise, and some pocket dimensions are optional kinda like the ACIT moons. BTW there is a Big Al balloon in the screen here.

We were already told that we could mix and match armor in the game but its still awesome to know that we can kinda like in Size Matters. It also shows that armor can give you bonuses like more bolts and reduced damage. You can see tons of references here with the armor like Lombax Trillium armor, Q-Force, and Captain Starshield.

You can change the HUD ! That must be why its different from the August demo, and its cool what you can do with photo mode.

This is REALLY HARD to see but during that scene near the end of Ratchet fighting a Nefarious Trooper, I think that is a Lombax wall jumping ! Maybe he is the Phantom ?

3 are interesting as one depicts Ratchet with that machine gun weapon as seen in trailer, Ratchet looking at his Rift tether which I bet will be upgraded by the Phantom to let Ratchet dash, and a pic of Rivet and Clank in front of a well detailed Grunthor, which was also seen in demo.

There is nothing new here besides some Lombax writing that translates to “Resistance outpost four” meaning we could see more bases in the game, and more resistance fighters.

There is so much going on here and I cant wait to get the game however the only problem I have with it so far is that there isn’t much difference between Ratchet and Rivets gameplay, besides how they might travel. Hopefully there will be one more difference. I also hope we can see Captain Qwark and Talwyn soon and though Qwark is briefly seen in the trailer and even in the demo during the photo mode segment, we haven’t seen any sign of Talwyn which makes me worried that she might not be in the game.

Putting a modern tech thing into a non-modern game setting is a thing you’ll often want to do, or at least, I do. And there’s a few things I’ve worked out about doing so with the most important one is how accurate is it. If you put the internet in a science fiction game, you get to go nuts. It’s science fiction and the internet. Why wouldn’t it be there and also it’s the year 3000, there’s no reason to still have lag is there? Whereas if you add it to a game where it wouldn’t be expected to be there, it has to be either an exact copy of the real thing or a parody. It doesn’t work otherwise. You can’t play it straight and so it needs on some level to be funny. Having your orc bard have some magic brick with all the worlds info in it kind of sort of works. But it’s never gonna work as well as Grunthor Heartsinger Fucking Googles Where The Bad Guy Lives And Then Posts About It On MySpace. Printers are another good example. Modern printers can put ink on paper about 9/10 unless it’s urgent. Science fiction printers can and can’t do whatever you want. Fantasy printers can put ink on paper badly and in a way that functions as a significant Mcguffin. Now, one example of an exception to this I’ll bring up is a book called The Divide where they straight up invent the printing press to mass produce propaganda. Things you’ve come up with off your own back as a party don’t have to be played for laughs because now its invention and existence is a plot device rather than a thing that exists for some reason. Let things the PCs made actually be good.

Finally finished all of the Symphony of Ages books. And I have to say that I am so… disappointed and angry and sad with how the story ended. Specially when reading the last book.

The Weaver’s Lament felt like it’s whole purpose was just to kill off the characters. Yes, they’d had unnaturally extended lives. But aside from Grunthor who had so much taken out of him in the War, Achmed and Rhapsody were content and largely happy with their lives. Even their grief at his loss (taking out the horror of how he died and the disgust at how he was ten defiled) didn’t take away their honest will to continue. Even after Ashe dies (and oh have I disliked him from the beginning), they could have explored the grief, the healing, the living as survival, and the living to live again.

I have a lot of thoughts about a creator's plan vs. the dynamic that arises organically over a story (achmed vs. ashe); the difference between an abuse survivor making jokes about herself (okay) vs. other people joking about them (not okay) (a difference I was not clear on as a younger appleheart reading it); toxic masculinity; old dudes claiming to be immune from consequences because of age; jo; the earth child sequence that still gives me nightmares; and why was grunthor's literacy retconned.

There is a scene in Rift Apart where Ratchet and Clank go against an undead Grunthor and Clank cusses. It’s an ingame dialogue, not a cutscene, so you can easily miss it.

Wait, you said in one of your posts that Clank swears in Rift Apart. Not that I’d mind but can you provide some context? (Without spoilers please). I’ll admit I’ve always wanted to hear him swear “Ratchet, these recent developments have irritated me so much I think I might just do a swear.” “Oh?” “Yes! *builds up energy furiously* SHIT!”

It's pretty much just Ratchet and Clank going against a really big bone creature and the robo uttering a terrified "Holy *Beep!*" I can't recover from this, I'm laughing so hard my stomach hurts.

And Ratchet just laughs and goes "You said it, pal!!!!" like the proudest big brother in the universe, I can't deal with them.

When did the blog reach its peak: … right now, essentially. I don’t post much and I’m a bit niche, but I’m very okay with that.

What made you want to make a tumblr: I wanted a different dashboard. This is my escape tumblr into an aspect of my personality that I enjoy cultivating, but is very slender part of a whole me. It’s essentially an identity exploration + pop occulture + black jewels fan blog. XD
