Chapter 14 Part 3: Checking out the map
Myrrh has returned to Ephraim without incident.
Tumblr media
Selena didn't take Myrrh as a hostage, and fought valiantly as a knight of Grado until the end.
(Three Houses Felix scowls and makes some comment about how stupid this all is.)
Tumblr media
Ephraim sees the capital, and starts to remember when he and Eirika were brought here by their dad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He remembers in sepia tones a conversation he had with Lyon about the Sacred Stones, and how they were originally created to trap the demon king who threatened humanity long ago.
Tumblr media
In particular, Grado's stone is known as THE FIRE EMBLEM
They did it! There's the thing!
Tumblr media
Lyon gives Ephraim a book to read on the subject, and Ephraim's comment is "It sure is thick. And the letters sure are small."
We're reminded again that Ephraim was not the greatest student. Lyon chides him for his attitude and warns him that he'll get in trouble with Bishop McGregor again if he doesn't study like he's supposed to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lyon also asks if Ephraim can help him learn to use a lance better. He comments, "It's a bad look if I keep losing to Eirika all the time..."
This whole scene is cute. It establishes a bit more of Ephraim's relationship to Lyon from before the war. The two of them are really different people, with Lyon not being very able physically, but being an eager student, and Ephraim being gifted at fighting, but unmotivated to read. But it feels like it's because of their differences that they get along so well. They kind of make up for each other in a way.
As for Lyon's line, I translated it above as "it's a bad look", but there are different ways it could be translated. He uses the expression "kakko warui", which can be translated to "uncool", "bad looking" (but in the sense of not looking good, rather than "ugly" per se), or something along those lines. Basically, Lyon is saying that it's damaging his image to keep losing to Eirika over and over again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The scene shifts to modern Grado, and Lyon makes some comment to his father about "being unable to accept your death" and says something like "if only I had been stronger / more capable".
His father doesn't respond, which along with the comment from Lyon about "your death" should clue us in that something weird is going on...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's our team. I'm actually leaving both Duessel and Seth behind. I want to train Ross a bit more before I reclass him, and Cormag needs to wait for another Elysian whip to come along. L'Arachel needs to get to level 10. Tethys is coming because dancers are always useful, and I'm bringing the characters who just reclassed because I want to try them out!
Tumblr media
Here's the bottom of the map, moving from the bottom right to the bottom left. The army starts in two groups, with Ephraim forced into the right group. The armors in the middle are guarding a door, but they won't move from their positions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving slightly up from the previous three photos, here I have these three in order from left side to right side. We can see the treasure room that the stationary armors are guarding, with one shaman inside. And we can start to see all the other units up from our starting position.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I've moved the screen up a bit and I go from right to left. Each way up has a door with a bishop standing right behind it. One of them has a sleep staff, and the other has a silence staff. Behind the shaman in the center is one final door that goes to the boss's room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the final series of 3 photos of the top of the map, from left side to right side. The emperor is in the final room on the throne. He's flanked by two promoted druids, each of whom has a very annoying Berserk Staff. This fun staff makes you lose control of a unit, and that unit will attack anyone nearby, friend or foe, until they're cured, or a couple turns have passed and it wears off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite all of the chests, I'm not bringing Colm. We're going to get a new hire here, and he's going to work for us for very cheap!
Next time: A familiar face!

Chapter 17 - The Demon King's Shadow
There were five Sacred Stones total, and all of them were passed down within each of the nations of Magvel. Eirika and her army had safely obtained Renais' Sacred Stone, but Grado, Frelia, and Jehanna's Stones had already been destroyed.
They now were seeking the last one, and so they decided to march to the Theocracy of Rausten. Their guide was none other than Princess L'Arachel.
Once they left Renais, they traveled in peace for a long while. They were not attacked by any enemies nor any monsters. They were also blessed with good weather, and L'Arachel was in a fantastic mood.
Tumblr media
"It's good to return home sometimes. I wonder if Lord Uncle is doing well?"
Dozla was walking alongside her. His guffaw echoed through the air. "Pontifex Mansel is sure to be very surprised! You've grown into an even finer young woman than you were when you left home, Lady L'Arachel!"
"Oh, Dozla, stop it!"
*Can I ask you somethin’?" Rennac was trudging along behind them. He said with a bored, apathetic look on his face, "This Pontifex Mansel person will pay me my money, right? Every gold coin his niece has avoided paying me…?"
"Oh, that's right, Eirika! There are many exceptional bards in Rausten. And the one we all talk about most, Saaga, is so amazing that he moves me to tears no matter how many times I listen to him perform. I want you to hear him as well!"
"...Uh-huh..." Eirika turned back and caught a glimpse of Rennac out of pity for him.
He looked utterly exhausted and worn out as he muttered, "...She ain't even listenin’."
Eirika didn't know whether L'Arachel really didn't hear him, or whether she just pretended not to, but either way, L'Arachel's voice gradually became more and more cheerful.
"But this time, it is my turn to tell the bards of my many adventures! Our services for the greater good are sure to become a beautiful poem passed down for many generations to come!"
"If so, I wonder if I will be in this poem as well?"
"Oh, Dozla, of course! You will go down in history as my loyal servant!"
"Ohhhhhh, what an honor that will be! You have moved me greatly by saying so!"
"You don't have to record much of anything about me. Just pay me." Rennac muttered.
"We will soon reach the Narube River. Dozla, do you remember when we crossed it? Monsters were trying to attack a boat traveling upon it, so we gallantly rushed in and saved some ordinary citizens who were trying to escape…"
"We should be able to rendezvous with the Frelian Army here." Innes forcefully cut into their conversation. He unsurprisingly seemed to be fed up with L'Arachel's cheerful banter.
Eirika smiled and added to show that she heard what he'd said, "Yes. And when we do so, it will make all of our battles from here on out much easier."
"Of course. We will be teaming up with Frelia's most elite unit."
The Frelian Army had departed their home country following a different route from Eirika's army, and were now going to Rausten as well. Eirika had received a report from the pegasus knights that they should be able to meet up somewhere within the vicinity of Narube.
They would combine with the Frelian Army to bolster their numbers, then obtain Rausten's Sacred Stone so they could capture Lyon this time with all of their forces. That was her army's current strategy.
No matter how powerful Lyon's Dark Stone may be, they had nothing to fear if they had two Sacred Stones. The army he led was now nothing more than the survivors from Grado, so his numbers and weapons likely wouldn't compare to Eirika's. L'Arachel and all of the other members of her army were making cheerful expressions because they could feel hope for the road ahead.
But their cheerful march did not last for much longer. The moment they reached the Narube River, they froze. Two ordinary citizens were cowering alongside the road.
They were a young girl and an elderly man. The exhausted man was comforting the girl, who appeared to be his granddaughter.
The girl noticed Eirika's army and pulled back in fear.
Eirika dismounted her horse and quietly approached her so as not to surprise her. "What happened? Do you live around here...?"
"...You're not with the Grado Army? You're not, right?" The tension drained from the girl's body with a sigh of relief.
But on the contrary, her words made Eirika's army nervous. "You saw the Grado Army? Somewhere close to here?"
"Yes."  Terror flashed through the girl's big eyes, and she nodded. "They attacked us suddenly. A group of soldiers wearing Grado’s armor came here… and set our village on fire. They killed all of the men who tried to stand up to them… Just when we thought it was all over for us, Frelia's pegasus knights rushed in and saved us. But… the Grado Army is so strong it's terrifying… most of the soldiers from Frelia were killed."
"What? The Frelian Army was killed by the remaining soldiers from Grado?" The color drained from Innes' face, and he pulled in closer to the girl.
His angry expression spooked her. She shrunk back closer to the old man, then nodded. "Y-Yes…"
"Not all of them were defeated, right? For every last member of Frelia's elite to be gone…"
"No, there is a unit still fighting. But only one. The other units were all defeated. There's still a few friends in our village who have yet to escape… The last of the Frelian Army is still doing everything they can to protect them. Please save them! Please…"
"Understood. Let's go, Eirika!" Innes shouted.
However, Eirika was worried about the look on the face of the crouching old man that the girl had protected. His face was twitching like he'd suffered a horrifying experience, and his lips moved as if he was trying to say something.
Eirika approached him, bent down next to him, and gently said, "You're okay now. We will defeat the Grado Army and save the villagers. Please try to relax and…"
"...No match… for him." The old man muttered something in a muffled voice.
"Huh?" Eirika responded.
"You are… no match… for him. You are no match… for a terrifying person… like him…"
The man was shaking all over, and continued speaking in a mumble. The words that she only just barely managed to make out were ominous. "No… he's not… a person… He's not... human… He's… a monster… He's… the Demon King…"
"The… Demon King? What does that mean?" Eirika felt a chill crawl down her spine for no discernable reason, and her voice lowered to a hush.
The old man's eyes were wide open, and his breathing was shallow.
His granddaughter noticed this and wrapped a blanket around his shoulders, then she said to Eirika, "I'm sorry. Grandfather rushed right out when the village was attacked… and seems to have seen him. The commander leading the Grado Army…"
"Their commander? Who could it have possibly been…?"
"I didn't see, so I can't say anything at all, but… Grandfather was saved by the Frelian Army when he was in danger. Still, he's absolutely terrified. I have no idea what he saw."
"...Can you tell us what kind of person the enemy commander was…?”
The moment she tried to ask the man for more details, L'Arachel suddenly cried out, "Look at that! There's someone over there…"
Eirika looked up in the direction L'Arachel was pointing to.
A black shadow rose over the grass.
Or so it appeared to be at first glance, for it radiated a gloomy aura all around it. Then Eirika realized that it was someone she knew well, standing with his back slightly hunched over, not moving a muscle.
Eirika whispered before she even knew what she was saying, "Lyon…?"
Grado's prince was staring at her from beneath his long bangs. His eyes were cold and unfeeling.
Eirika's heart was filled with a sense of relief. Even though they were currently enemies, they could communicate with each other from the heart. ‘I'll always be your ally…' She could hear his voice clearly even now.
'I want to talk with him. I want to ask him for the answers to all of my doubts.' With her mind focused on only that one thought, she tried to walk over to him.
But Ephraim saw her moving and sharply yelled at her to stop. "Stop, Eirika! Don't get anywhere near him!"
"Brother…?"
Ephraim stood in front of her as if to shield her from something, and glared at Lyon.
Lyon's expression abruptly softened. Considering Ephraim's threatening look, his was so gentle it was strange. "Hey, Ephraim… What's the matter? Why are you making such a scary face…?"
"Lyon! How dare you appear before me with such a calm look on your face!"
Lyon tilted his head at Ephraim’s violent words like he didn't know what Ephraim meant.
"You remember the time we met in the capital, right? Don't tell me you forgot!" Ephraim's voice became more and more harsh with each word. Lyon, by contrast, was calm, and even smiling.
"Of course I remember! I would never forget… Ephraim, we're finally meeting again after so much struggle… Why are you so mad? Did I do something to upset y-?"
"Shut up!" Ephraim sharply cut him off.
Eirika anxiously looked for an opportunity to stop her brother. If he continued to speak with such hostility, they would lose their chance to talk with Lyon.
However, his anger was so fierce that she couldn't carelessly call out to him. All she could do was watch over them, with all of her apprehensions weighing on her mind.
"What did you say then? That you were the one who instigated this war… and that you were the one who invaded Renais and killed my father? That was what you said, right?!"
"Ephraim…" Lyon suddenly made a sad face in response.
Eirika couldn't stay silent any longer. She softly placed a hand on her brother's back and said, "Please stop. Brother. Don't talk like that."
"Eirika…"
Ephraim turned around and said in a strong tone to warn her, "He's not the Lyon we know. He's being controlled by an evil power. Probably the Dark Stone…"
"That can’t be… You're not yourself today, Brother…" Eirika could feel that Ephraim had made up his mind.
Eirika didn't know exactly what their conversation in Grado Castle had been like. Everything she knew was from her brother's report. She didn't think that he had lied to her, but they couldn't say there wasn't a chance that he lost himself when he was agitated, and interpreted everything Lyon said as animosity, even though Lyon might have come seeking reconciliation.
"Why are you looking at Lyon like he's suspicious? He's our dear friend, isn't he?"
"Eirika…"
"Lyon said that he will be our ally no matter what. Isn't that right, Lyon?"
"Yes, of course! I'm so happy, Eirika. You really are very kind. Why don't you come… closer…" Suddenly, Lyon's body stiffened. He bit his lip, signaling that he seemed to be enduring intense pain. But he couldn't suppress his voice, and a quiet groan escaped his lips.
"Lyon? What's the matter? Are you alright, Lyon…?" Eirika remembered that Lyon's body was not very strong.
Since long ago, he often broke out with fevers, and his swordsmanship never improved significantly. He was even embarrassed, and it made him feel inferior. But though his body was weak, because he possessed superior intelligence and sensibility, Eirika thought he should be more proud. Yet he still seemed to lack confidence in himself and be troubled by his weaknesses.
Lyon's face twisted, though now it was less in pain and more in anger. "Gah…! Don't get in my way…!" The moment Lyon shouted in frustration, his knees gave out, and he fell atop the grass.
Eirika tried to run straight over to him, but his sharp voice made her feet stop moving.
"Get away from me, Eirika!"
"Huh?"
The anger vanished from Lyon's face. In its place a desperate, pleading expression formed before he shouted, "You can't come near me! Hurry, get away…! If you don't, then I'll…"
"Lyon! What's wrong? What's happ-"
"I'll destroy you… Run… Hurry out of h-" Lyon cut his words short, and hid his face.
Eirika was utterly shocked. She was worried about his health, but he had told her to run. She found it hard to decide what to do, and didn't move.
Lyon slowly raised his head. On his face returned the same cold smile he had when he first appeared. He said in a calm voice, "Sorry for worrying you, Eirika. I’m alright now. That was just a light spasm."
"...Lyon?" If they were true, then those words should have reassured her, but for some reason, they only made her feel all the more worried. She took a step back against her own wishes.
This was not Lyon. That was the first thought that immediately came into her mind. Lyon didn't smile like that. He would never coax her in such a terrible way
"Be careful, Eirika. Don't leave any holes in your stance. He's not Lyon." Ephraim said.
Lyon… no, this being with the same face as the prince, laughed in amusement. "I'm not Lyon? Don't say such strange things, Ephraim. Oh, I get it. You don't like seeing me with so much energy? Would you be satisfied if I suffered a more severe spasm? You always looked at me like you would. You said that Lyon is a weak, pitiful child. But that was just your impression. You did not know anything about me…"
"That's not true." Ephraim refused to be provoked by Lyon’s attempts to agitate him, and responded in a calm voice, "We were friends. Of course, that doesn't mean we knew everything about each other. It wasn’t that simple. But I knew what was most important. You… Lyon was not the type of person to ever deceive or betray us. He wasn't a terrible creature like you, trying to enchant us with whatever words we wanted to hear. He wasn't a horrible person like that. You are not Lyon. You cannot be him.”
Lyon tilted his head to the side and stared straight at Ephraim, but, little by little, his expression began to change. The smile he was directing at them twisted into an arrogant smirk that could even be considered brazen. “Hmph… I see. It seems that human feelings are not something that I can underestimate.”
Eirika could not believe her ears. His tone was more sarcastic than any she’d ever heard before in her life.
“Pretending to be human was more fun than I ever expected it to be, but… there’s no need to keep up that facade any longer. You saw right through me, Prince of Renais. This body no longer belongs to Prince Lyon.”
“Damn you! ...I knew it! So you have taken over Lyon’s body?!” Ephraim shouted. “I don’t know what you are, but get out! Get out of Lyon’s body right now! Or else I’ll…!”
“Or else you’ll what? Come now, what are you going to do, you foolish prince? Prince Lyon’s heart is already almost entirely gone. I’ve eaten it all up…”
“What did you just say…?”
“Didn’t you hear me? I ate it. Though it resisted and screamed, I ate it up. For a descendant of Grado, he had such a weak heart…”
“Damn you…!” The anger disappeared from Ephraim’s voice. He tried his very hardest to keep himself together, but his voice still shook slightly.
Eirika was taken utterly aback. This was the first time she’d ever seen her brother tremble before an enemy.
“What are you?!”
“You still don’t know? You really are an utter fool, prince of Renais. You should remember your legends that have been passed down through the ages. The name of the enemy you sealed away.”
“He can’t be…” Eirika whispered.
“The Demon King… of ancient times…” Ephraim growled.
He burst out laughing, the sound echoing through the air. He'd already given up his human facade, and a malicious aura radiated around him.
He was the being known as the Demon King, that had existed eight hundred years ago and was feared by humanity. He’d led countless monsters and did as he pleased with the continent of Magvel. The fire his monsters breathed burned down the villages and towns, and drowned the people in the depths of despair.
What became the people's final hope was the five Sacred Stones and the hero Grado. He led his soldiers, challenged the Demon King to battle, and in the end, succeeded in sealing away the Demon King’s soul. This finally brought peace to the continent, and humanity created new towns atop the ashes. The hero Grado founded an empire, and the brave soldiers that fought with him each built their own countries.
That was all supposed to already be a thing of the distant past, and become legend. The Demon King wasn't supposed to be resurrected ever again. But the seal had been broken, and the Demon King revived. And he’d even taken the body of a descendant of Grado, the very man who’d defeated him.
The Demon King said with satisfaction in his voice, “Prince Lyon will never appear again. This body has already yielded to me. It is mine now!"
But then the Demon King clutched his chest with one of his hands. It appeared that the gesture meant that Lyon’s heart continued to try its hardest to resist, and the Demon King was trying to keep him suppressed.
“Don’t worry, I will grant you your desire to kill Prince Ephraim of Renais, and claim Princess Eirika. That was what you wanted, is it not?
“Damn you…” Ephraim tightened his grip on his lance, however, before he could launch his attack, the Demon King vanished.
“He ran away…?” Ephraim looked around.
Eirika turned her head towards him. “No, Brother. He’s not running, but trying to lure us somewhere. I think his target is more likely the people of Narube that haven’t escaped yet and the survivors of the Frelian Army. He wants to attack them and lure us to him.”
“You’re right. Let’s hurry, Eirika. We must save Frelia’s unit!”
“Yes, we must…” Eirika nodded, but did not feel like giving the order straight away.
Ephraim noticed her expression, and looked at her. “What’s the matter, Eirika?”
“Brother, I wonder what Lyon’s… No, the Demon King’s final words meant. About Lyon’s desires…”
Ephraim winced and said, “It was just part of an enemy’s plot to make us falter. Don’t worry about it. It’s more important we think about the Frelian Army and the people of Narube first.”
“...Yes, it is.”
Ephraim was right. Their allies were fighting desperately to protect the citizens. Rescuing them came first.

Taking Stock of Barracks in Fire Emblem Heroes: Part 3, Section 2 (Final)
Okay! So I took a few days off for travel and now want to finish this up. From everything above, I’ve pinpointed the 5* exclusive characters I would love to start getting merges for as well as solidifying who my official potential “projects” are. Now I need to start analyzing my priorities and go from there. The sections will be 5* exclusives that won’t need feathers for merging (barring any unexpected demotes, which is highly unlikely for the majority of these); 3-4* merge potential projects that require orbs, and 3-4* potential projects that require grails. First up, 5* exclusives.
After going through my barracks, these are the characters I have isolated as ones that I want to work towards getting to +10:
Micaiah, Mia, Nephenee, Saber, Silque, Myrrh, OG Ephraim, Brave Ike, Y!Marth, Summer Robin, Summer Innes, Halloween L'Arachel
Now, mama didn’t raise a fool. The vast majority of these are unrealistic, but I can at least use this as a guide for what to save for. So these can be further categorized into three sections: Higher Priority, Realistic Goals, and Pipe Dreams:
Higher Priority
Micaiah, +5; She just takes the least amount of merges to complete. She regularly appears on banners, and will eventually come as a pity breaker on other banners.
Mia, +3; She’s my favorite of the fast sword girls. And while she’s slowly getting outclassed in terms of raw speed, she has good balanced defenses and her weapon can still give her a niche. I also wouldn’t be surprised if she lands a resplendent alt at some point.
Realistic
Nephenee, +2; I’ve thought about it, and I let Nephenee’s -Spd bane distract me from her for too long. She’s at +2 with a Spd boon now, and still holds up stats-wise. Her attack is still a little low, but the armor effectiveness in her weapon more than makes up for that. The problem is that she’s on a banner right now that only lasts today. I can’t +10 her just today, but I need to try for a few merges.
Saber, +1; I have a major soft spot for Saber. He held my Summoner Support for a long time, and I think he has a very interesting niche in the over-saturated sword market. He’s a long-term plan.
Silque (Currently Base, could be +2); I love healers, and Silque is my favorite healer from the series as a whole. I haven’t merged her yet because she has a good staff, good special, and Dazzling Staff fodder. But I now realize that I don’t particularly care for Dazzling Staff fodder. That’s added to almost every new healer nowadays, more fodder will come.
Myrrh, +0; Myrrh is the character I wanted most for so long. The first Manakete/Dragon I ever fell in love with, and she’s relevant again. Problem is, the only one I’ve pulled is +Def/-Atk. Amazing boon, terrible bane. I need merges to erase the bane and start really building her. She’s likely in the Top 5 for priorities.
Pipe Dream
Ephraim, +0; Unless he demotes, this is a long shot. I’ve only ever pulled one and now I have other infantry lance users that out-compete him. It would be nice, though.
Y!Marth, +1; Y!Marth appearing at the same time as Bramimond really hurt my ability to justify spending for him, and now I kinda regret it. As far as sword infantries go, he’s super flexible and has great stats. His boon is +Atk, so that helps, but when he comes back, I’ll make a play for him.
Summer Robin, +0 (Will be +1 after Compile Manuals Purchased); My first ever 5* unit! Summer Robin has held a special place in my heart since I first started the game. Back when getting 5* units as a new player was actually rather difficult, I played for about 2 weeks before my first one came up, and it was Summer Robin. She’ll erase her awful -Atk bane with the Compile Manual I’ll get of her, but I’m going to start working on snagging her in the upcoming summer banners.
Summer Innes, +0 (Will be +1 after Compile Manuals Purchased); The first unit I ever spent money to acquire (purchased an orb pack with an old gift card out of desperation). His Bow unit sucks all kinds of ass, and Axe fliers are still one of the rarer categories. He’ll be +1 soon (I love the limited time compile feature, it’s a much better mechanic than the long term compile option), but more merges would make me happy. He’ll be re-run soon.
Halloween L’Arachel, +0; H! L’Arachel’s art might be one of my absolute favorite in the game. Easily Top 5. Green Cavalry Mages are also almost uniformly bad outside of Gunnthra, who needs a refine to maintain her niche. The only one who might be able to compete is Cecilia, but we’ll see where she truly lands after her eventual refine. Either way, more merges for her would be incredible. Sacred Stones is next up in the Hall of Forms rotation. I don’t expect her to be an option, but she’s on the short list of SS seasonals so…there’s a chance.
Brave Ike, +2 (Could be +3); His Refine is incredible. He carries hard in AR and makes PvE content trivial. If anything, this is just to keep his stats sharp. This is mostly just an eventual “this would be nice” thing.
Now, if I take everything above and rank it, here’s what I have:
Micaiah
Mia
Myrrh
Nephenee
Saber
Silque
Halloween L'Arachel
Ephraim
Summer Robin
Y!Marth
Summer Innes
Brave Ike
Okay, I’m fine with this. Micaiah and Mia make the most sense, since they’re the closest to being done. Myrrh, Nephenee, Saber, and Silque are all realistic and will be making appearances on banners soon (other than Silque). The rest are just guidelines; although I will be saving for Summer Robin & Summer Innes return next month, and then saving for Halloween L’Arachel at the end of the year.
_____________________________________________
Now it’s time for 3-4* Potential Projects! My first pass yielded three groups: ones I already have the copies to +10, the ones I still need copies for, and Grail units. At this point, I need to diversify my +10 units by movement type, specifically flying and calvary, with an emphasis on Player Phase units, strong Mixed Phase units, and tome users.
Here’s who I can +10 today if I desired:
Nino, PP, +5, 100k feathers needed; Benefits from being a favorite character, player phase focused, and a tome user. Slight dock for being infantry.
OG Eliwood, PP, +2, 160k feathers needed; Eliwood remains the front runner of this group if only because of favoritism. It helps that his Player Phase capabilities are now some of the best in the game when it comes to red sword users.
Donnel, MP, +2, 160k feathers needed; Again, a strong Mixed Phase character with a new refine, but that pushes him into a Player Phase role. I just can’t swing the idea of building him up for use.
Matthew, EP, +0, 200k feathers needed; Enemy Phase dagger to compliment Sothe’s Player Phase dagger niche. A favorite character, but shares movement type. Plus he requires a lot of support to really shine. Lower priority.
Soleil, PP, +0, 200k feathers needed; One of the strongest 3-4* infantry swords. Great attack and good speed, middling defenses that could be patched up with skill investment. She ranks pretty high, but has a high merge cost from my current supplies.
Ares, EP, +0, 200k feathers needed; Fills a different role than Eliwood, but makes a case given how oppressive Special Spiral + Bonfire can be. Middling priority.
Est, PP, +0 (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; I love lance fliers and Est is the only one on my short list that isn’t a Grail unit. She’d require some significant investment in terms of resources, but I’ve been thinking of making a dedicated flier team for a while, which she would shine in.
Titania, Support, +0, 200k feathers needed; I love Tactics teams and almost no one runs it better than Titania. She’d require high investment, but I’ve held onto her for years with the plan to invest, it might be time.
OG Tharja, PP, +0 (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; I really love red mages. My Lysithea sees very regular use, and Tharja’s potential on a Tactics team would be incredible. She remains a very high potential.
Soren, Support, +0 (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; I also love Chill skills, and Soren is one of only a few characters that can pull Triple Chill. I might build him with Triple Chill to see how he handles before I invest. He’s lower priority right now.
Here’s who I have on my short list for potential projects that I don’t actively have all the merges for yet:
Rath, PP, +2 (Could be +7, with a +Atk waiting for deliberation); 160k feathers needed; Rath is the closest on this list to having the merges needed. He’s currently at +2, and I only need another 2 in order to be at +10. He will continue to be higher on the list than others, if only because I’m a sucker for calvary bow users.
Altena, EP, +1, 180k feathers needed; So. Here’s the problem. I love Altena, and she’s likely a Top 5 merge project contender….but I don’t have the merges. She just hasn’t been showing up. She just has to remain on the back burner of priority until I have more merges. I’ll reassess if more start coming along.
Norne, MP, (Could be +4) (No 5*), 220k feathers needed; Norne checks a lot of boxes for me: Infantry, Great Stats, Mixed Phase potential, Bow User. I still need 6 copies to make her +10, but I need to start investing in her now. I know she sits in the exact same space that Altena does, but even having a few more merges changes the calculus. The major major problem is that none of the 5* units I’ve decided are priorities are colorless except for Silque. So the likelihood that she turns up on pulls is less likely. But I think my heart doesn’t really care.
Tethys, Support, (Could be +5, No 5*), 220k feathers needed; Tethys makes this list due to her Support potential. Colorless infantry dagger is mostly filled for me, but she sticks out in my mind. I might just build her low at first to see how I like her, similar to Soren.
I’ve been avoiding this for a long time. I never spend grails because I’m worried the perfect Grail Unit will come along and it’s blinded me to the number of amazing Grail Units that have already come along, and some of these Grails are starting to burn a hole in my pocket. Now it’s time:
Astram, PP/Support, +2, 160k feathers, 2200 grails; I’ve been using Astram in Arena this past week and I’ve really changed my mind about him. His performance is very solid, and he handles a ton of things on his own. He also slots into the mercenary/knight side of sword user instead of myrmidon, which I’ve always preferred. Great PRF, good stat totals; this is biased because Arena bonus unit buffs are one hell of a drug. He’s back in the running.
Joshua, MP, +2, 160k feathers, 2600 grails; Making a completely flip-flopped statement from earlier, since Joshua is on the myrmidon side of sword users, but Joshua’s always been a favorite of mine, and I stupidly used one way back for Windsweep on Sothe…of all things. He’s in line for a weapon refine soon, and depending on how they treat it, could launch him into contention again. He remains a strong front runner. Also, there’s a strong chance he’ll be the Grail option in the upcoming SS Hall of Forms. I would love if it’s either him, Lyon, or Valter; that would be incredible.
Black Knight, MP, +2, 160k feathers, 2200 grails; Obviously TT/GHB were originally conceived of to give us fun side characters and villains, and the Black Knight remains near the top. I don’t usually use Armor units, but he’d hold his own very well, especially considering the number of Fighter skills that exist.
Fallen Ashnard, EP/MP, (Could be +2, No 5*), 180k feathers, 2200 grails; The main thing going against Fallen Ashnard right now is how new he is. So his investment will remain high for a while. But it’s hard to ignore how well his stats turned out. Great villain from my favorite series and it’s hard to not be drawn to him. Plus sword fliers are either 5* forever locked or like…Palla (aka Moonbow fodder). He’s got a great niche.
Valter, PP, (Could be +4), 120k feathers, 1650 grails; Another favorite villain from a favorite series in a unit type that is treated poorly by IS. His speed doesn’t hold up, unfortunately, but he’s very likely due for a refine soon, and he could be a part of the upcoming Hall of Forms. He’s higher on the priority list because of his status as a favorite unit, but I should honestly wait for the refine to decide.
Cormag, PP, (Could be +2, No 5*), 180k feathers, 2200 grails; The second in a run of lance fliers with generic stats that seemed to last for several months. Cormag has such an interesting character arc in his game, and it’s a shame the way he was treated. To that end, he has a workable stat spread (I just wish his Res was higher). He ranks high on characters I like, which is why he’s on the list to begin with.
Conrad, EP, (Could be +2, No 5*), 180k feathers, 2200 grails; Conrad is on this list because of a person on my friends list who has a +10 Conrad with Distant Counter and…this boy puts in work. I love bulky units, and bulky cavalry units are few and far between. The only other Lance Calvary units that see use in my barracks are Legendary Ephraim and Dimitri, so he’d be filling a good niche in my barracks. His cost just remains really high for a character that I’m not in love with.
Death Knight, EP (Could be +3, No 5*), 160k feathers, 1750 grails; Decent villain from the most recent game with an intriguing PRF. It’s not quite as evergreen as I’d hoped, but I’ve encountered +10 Death Knights in various modes and they certainly hold their own. Less of a cost than Conrad with slightly less bulk, an interesting trade off.
Young Minerva, EP, +1, 180k feathers, 2700 grails; When Young Minerva first debuted, I was almost positive that she would be my first Grail +10. Now that she’s available, I’m hesitating. I have a strong Axe user already, just not one that flies. She’s got great speed, defense, and attack, and she’d see a lot of use. I just have to decide whether I want her more than I maybe need someone else.
Winter Jaffar, MP, (Could be +1), 180k feathers, 2700 grails; Great art as a unit, I just don’t care for Armors usually. Being a green dagger hurts him a good amount, as does the really high cost. I might just wait a bit for him, but I’m sure he’ll be outclassed in a few months anyway.
Lyon, EP, +7, 60k feathers, 750 grails; My pride and joy for a long, long time. I’m waiting to finish him off until he gets a refine, so I know which way to invest. I also love his recent alt, which has helped fill the void that my original left as he started to fall behind other units (especially Sophia, who has stomped all over him at this point).
Arvis, PP/Support, (Could be +3), 140k feathers, 1750 grails; One of the first red tome users I fell in love with, if only because of his decent stat spread and unique skill. I killed one way back for Ploy fodder, so his cost remains high, but maybe we’ll get some kind of rerun in the future.
Brunnya, EP/Support, (Could be +1), 180k feathers, 2700 grails; My AR defense was recently stomped by a Brunnya and it made me look at her in a different light. As an infantry blue tome, she’s got some competition, but she is surprisingly bulky because of her tome. I am quite intrigued by her.
__________________________________________________
Based on my analysis above, here’s where I’m coming down in terms of a road map. Everyone else isn’t necessarily out of the running, but this focuses on my direct needs for strong Player Phase / Mixed Phase units and puts my resources to best use:
Immediate Use: OG Eliwood, Soleil, Est, Norne, Fallen Ashnard, OG Tharja
OG Eliwood will get the bump first because he fills the most immediate niche and already has some investment made into him. I’ll also dedicate resources to Norne and Fallen Ashnard, since they still need time to develop but are high on my list. I also feels like I’m now making Fallen Ashnard the focus of my grails, for when he comes out in two months, we’ll see if someone overtakes him before then (likely one of the SS boys). I’ll upgrade Est and OG Tharja to test out how they perform before committing. Depending on how Est does, she’ll likely get a bump with Soleil.
Eventual Niche: Titania, Young Minerva, Brunnya
Of these, Titania is the most likely to get the bump, as she’s a favorite and would serve as a solid support unit. Young Minerva functions well at +1 and doesn’t need as much investment as others in order to perform. Brunnya will be leveled up and tested to see if she’s worth the investment.
Build Now and Wait: Rath, Altena
I’m pausing raising up Rath for now, I’ll wait until I have enough copies to fully +10 him. I love his character, but he will almost certainly stay PvE, and his current build shines there. Altena will get further looks after I get more copies.
Determine after Refines: Joshua, Valter, Lyon
I really need to watch and wait for my three Sacred Stones boys. I love all three and would dedicate resources to them, but I need to wait and see what their eventual refines bring to the table. I have the highest hopes for Lyon, since he’s proven to be popular, and they gave Sophia of all people a new life, he deserves it. Valter will likely get some extra stats and potentially Panic built into his weapon (even though he doesn’t have the HP to utilize it as much). Joshua will get some kind of refine that doubles down on his decent Resistance. Conditional DC like Saber/Say’ri would be incredible, but I’m not holding my breath. This also gives me time to continue to deliberate on who I want to spend Grails on.
I’m…..done? No, I’m not done. But this is the closest I’ve had to a game plan for this game beyond “oo! Shiny new units!,” so I’m really proud of myself. Time to spend some resources!

Rescue Mission  || closed starter || @vantagx (Elphin)
As per usual, on every mission Summoner picks who get to go and who remains in the castle to protect it. The main team was sent out to intercept Embla’s recent attack. Everything was going smoothly until a messenger came to report that the Prince of Askr was ambushed and was taken a hostage by the Embla army.
Panic seeped into the army but thankfully, summoner quickly planned a counterattack. Calling for some heroes to act as a diversion to follow the main army then send a couple to rescue the prince. Among the group that was sent undercover were Chrom and Elphin. Maybe Chrom was not a fast unit but they needed the strength in case they were found.
Tumblr media
The prince waited until all his teammates came, Elphin, L'Arachel and Jaffar. “Summoner said we are supposed to take the southeast path to avoid any conflict until we reach Alfonse. Is everyone ready?”

Chapter 13 Part 6: Yoinking stuff for future use
So Franz is ready to move forward and heal up with an item, and I check out the enemies below. This one, with this range has something interesting.
Tumblr media
He has a dragon spear, which he'll drop! It's effective against dragon types.
Tumblr media
I leave Franz here on the forest. He's not in range of the dragon spear guy, but the other guy can reach him.
Tumblr media
On the right, Vanessa demonstrates her air superiority, and L'Arachel heals Gerik. She's been getting to heal almost every turn, which is good since she needs to get experience and get herself to level 10 ASAP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ephraim takes out the archer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Gerik moves down to get the last axe guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lute then goes ahead to the village.
This woman also speaks of how kind Selena is and asks us to save her.
We get a "Mah-yoh-kay" which could be translated as an "anti-magic charm", but is actually translated as the much more natural sounding (and no less accurate) "talisman". It raises resistance, so I guess this woman wants someone to walk straight into Selena's magic attacks and try to talk her down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here's the right group before we end turn.
Tumblr media
Look at him trot! :)
Tumblr media
My prediction was right, Cormag gets targeted by Selena next, and he gets hit too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Moulder rushes in to patch him up. This is what I meant when I said that Moulder didn't need two different weapon types like Sage would have given him. He's gone this whole map only healing, and never attacking, and that's going to be the general pattern moving forward too.
Tumblr media
I notice that this guy has a hammer, which should be effective against Franz since he's a Great Knight now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I move Tana and Franz down to team up on this guy, and Franz breaks his javelin just in time to pick up the Dragon Spear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that pirates are appearing in the bottom left area, I decide to send Marisa down that way in the hopes that she can get some easy combat. I'll have Seth finish off the archer, and then Marisa can just deal with the axe guys who should have bad hit against her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This mercenary has a Zanbato, which is effective against horses, but Lute was on the other side of a river, so it sucks to be this guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even this late into the game, here is Seth killing guys twice over.
He hasn't even gotten that many levels thanks to how experience gain works with promoted units. He's just that insanely strong.
Tumblr media
I was trying to capture it here, but Selena actually targeted L'Arachel this time! She missed, but I was a little surprised since L'Arachel has decent res.
But again, I think there might be something wonky about how enemies with big range like this target. It may not be based on who they'll do the most damage to. I feel like I remember hearing something like that before.
Tumblr media
Oh, and it turns out the lone troubadour near Selena has a sleep staff!
Tumblr media
Next time: A lot of work for little reward
