Sunshine, Earthshine at the Lunar Limb - May 30th, 1996.
"This dramatic image of the Moon's edge against a background of distant stars is from a perspective impossible for groundbased telescopes. It was taken by a star tracker camera onboard the Clementine spacecraft. The solar corona, the Sun's outer atmosphere, is visible shining brightly behind the lunar limb, while the Moon's surface is illuminated by Earthshine, sunlight reflected from the Earth to the Moon. As pictured, the part of the Moon in shadow is the lunar farside, the side not visible from Earth. The highly successful unmanned Clementine probe explored the Moon from lunar orbit during March and April of 1994. Its star tracker cameras were normally used for celestial navigation, producing wide angle images showing relative positions of stars."

Hazy Summer, Shadowed Days

@flashfictionfridayofficial- Canon complient musings from and about Andrew Foyle post war
Hastings June 1945
He slipped down the stairs in the bright summer moonlight, keeping his feet light. Shouldn't wake Dad, not his problem I'm awake at a god-forsaken hour of the night. He pulls his dressinggown closer around himself, skin cold with nightchill even in the warm air of the summer, pads across the hall and curls into the armchair by the unlit fire, seeking comfort in the familiarity of the moment. But the empty grate stared back at him, hollow, bare a shadow of it's normal self. Bit like me really. 26 years old, and what have I got from it? Five long years flying with the RAF, but my eyes are crocked, so that's out for a job, could never stand being a groundbased teacher even if they'd have me, Debden proved that.
Two-thirds of an Oxford degree in English, could finish that I suppose, I've got the papers, but I'm not the merry young lad who bounced into the Quads all those years ago, can't see myself going back there, with all those who are young enough, even if they had enough places.
Scraps and litter of poetry, all based around war-life and flying, but they wouldn't sell- we all want, need to move on from that, I don't want to be one of those Glory Days Warhorses that were a joke in stories. Who would buy them anyway? I'm sure there were better poets than my efforts who were already published
Might have to go in for an office job- as I said to Sam - but when I flinch at a phone, that's going to be a joke and a half for anyone I'm working with. And what skills have I got to offer them that another man hasn't.
Sam- the thought was a slap across the face, his glib words to her of weeks ago 'I'm going to work on you Sam', ah Hell, what have I got to offer her, such a smart, diligent girl as she is, she's found a job of sorts, as well as helping Dad. If I made a go of it, kept up the freindship and we got to something more I'd be sponging off her even as a friend. And if we got married, what a dream that was, would her empoyer even keep her on? Unlikely.
No, Sam was doing far better off on her own, not with me dragging her down like a stone, an old figure in a young skin, scraping around for what I can get, nothing to get it with. Can't even fish well.
"Andrew?"
He turns, Dad a soft dark figure in the doorway,
"Sorry, couldn't sleep."
"Mmm", Dad walks softly across, and perches on the end of the sofa nearest to Andrew.
"I wrote a poem, just before I came home," Andrew, looking back at the empty fireplace finds the words flying desperatly from his tongue 'talked about 'Summer Haze', and 'Uncertain Days' -sounds truely poetic doesn't it? But it's more like trying to walk on thick sand, everything slipping about under your feet, tumbling you down... What have I got Dad? Except wrecked eyes, and a degree I can't face finishing. And yet I'm not really really broken, thank God, and I'm grateful for that."
He hears his father swallow, then finds an arm slipping around his shoulders, tugging him insistantly close.
"Give yourself a chance, Andrew, ask around. Give yourself time."
But- but his mind says what if my time has gone, and I'm a lost fossil before I'm even thirty. And I don't want to have to go cap-in-hand to the RAF or SSAFA, leaning on others, Grammer School and Scholarship boy that I was. I should be able to do something.

Hi! How are you doing? Have you published a lot of papers? That sounds really cool! How long does the whole process take, if you don't mind me asking?
Hey puppy! I'm doing pretty well. Been working on a new side project that's got me very jazzed lately (but don't tell my supervisor, because it's not strictly what they're paying me to work rn jkjkj XD)
Have you published a lot of papers?
The answer is... yes and no. I only have one first author paper right now--that means that I lead and did the majority of the work and writing myself. I also have one 2nd author and one 3rd author paper, which is honestly a bit behind where I wanted to be at this point in grad school. I'll be applying to post doctoral positions in the fall, and it would have been really nice to have a few more papers that I was the lead on under my belt before I get there. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to push a project through the publication process, and my current projects probably won't quite get there in time for applications. (I've got one and a half that I still kind of have hope for. We'll see.)
That said, I'm on over two dozen other papers. I'm an observational astronomer, and for several years now I've volunteered to take survey data on one of the large groundbased telescopes. What this means is that every so often I stay up all night operating the telescope and taking data for other people. (This happens remotely over zoom and an ssh terminal window, I don't actually get to go to the telescope.) In return, the people who use that data give me authorship on their paper. I'm not usually involved in the data analysis, but my name is on there! Separately, I'm part of a few large collaborations where I help with target vetting or data cleaning, and I also get offered authorship for that work too.
How long does the whole process take, if you don't mind me asking?
Oh gosh. A long ass time. Then double it. First you have to do all the data analysis, which always takes three times as long as you expect it to. Then you have to write the paper, which you usually do simultaneously with redoing a bunch of the analysis because you realize there are a bunch of other angles to cover. Then you send out the paper to co-authors and give them anywhere from two-weeks to a month to review it and send you comments. Sometimes this results in more redoing of analysis. If the edits are substantial enough, you send it around for another round of comments. Then you submit it to the journal, who can take anywhere up to a few months to match you with a referee, who reads your paper and sends you back additional comments. Then you have a few months to do revisions and apply their suggested changes, send it around to co-authors for comments again, and then send it back in. Sometimes there is a second round of refereeing, though that isn't common. Then it goes to proof and, eventually is published.
The whole process, starting from when you "finish" the analysis and the first draft of the paper writing, can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. It varies by journal as well. Publishing in high profile journals like Science and Nature can take a notoriously long time. (I am on one paper in Science, and it nearly two years from the first time we submitted it to when it appeared in print.) That said, shorter papers in more specialized journals can go through in just a few months. And there are other options, like research notes (which don't get peer reviewed) that go up even faster.

There's this tfa megop fic in which they all have dragon alt-modes. And Megatron gives birth in loving detail.
I just suddenly want that but with Megashockblitz?? But with eggs. I'm just imagining Megatron, in his dragon alt-mode, curled around his clutch. The sires, Blitzwing and Shockwave, are either curled up next to him or fetching energon.
Also groundbased Decepticons would totally have gliding membranes instead of wings.

Took me a bit to get to this but this sounds interesting??

With grapple worms, you can also get high in another way!!! I am not telling you how!!! Doing that would break multiple taboos and I am not physically capable of that!!!

Moon captured on my birthday 1/07/20, Ultimate mineral edition! Have I gone too far in moon coloration? Probably so! But I just can't help but enjoy exploiting all the mineral deposits this glorious sky giant beholds! It's just exciting to know that we on the ground are capable of producing scientific results like this. We've come pretty far. I missed the wolf moon from a bad storm so I share you my birthday moon 🤣🤣. One of my major goals for 2019 is to take charge of my health. I’ve done a lot of research regarding #plantbaseddiets and was looking for a plant-based, non-whey protein powder to supplement my workouts. I was thrilled to learn about @groundbasednutrition and their vegan protein powders! All of their products are gluten-free, dairy free, non-GMO, grain free, soy free, paleo-approved, and Keto friendly 🌱 Not to mention, it tastes like I’m drinking a chocolate shake! Most protein powders have a chalky texture and taste, but not GBN products 👏🏼 Get 10% off when you enter your email address on the site at http://www.ground-based.com #ad #eatplantbased #groundbased #fitspo #eatclean #health #fitfam #fit #workout #motivation #gym #healthy #fitness #fitnessmotivation #gymlife #getfit #fitfluential #justdoit #weights #gains #instafitness #beastmode #instafit #fitnessaddict #active #instahealth https://www.instagram.com/p/BvnE6uZH0KL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=kagn6pl5k2hz

One of Tolkien's Greatest Tragedies made Right
Tumblr media
In all of Tolkien's works, we only ever get three female Hobbits that are in any way described in detail. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, Belladonna Took Baggins, and Rosie Cotton (Gamgee).
One is an insidious relative and the only woman in the entirety of The Hobbit book. The second is only ever mentioned. The last is barely mentioned beyond Samwise's desire to get home. Tolkien's list of women has never been robust, but the women of the shire are practically non-existent beyond annoying relatives, mothers, and "back home" crushes. The women of Tolkien have always suffered under careful eye. While yes, Tolkien's women are nearly always incredibly powerful, beautiful, strong, and resilient, they are quite literally the exceptional women. We never see the female portrayed in the mundane. Arwen is almost entirely portrayed within an appendice, and Melian, Galadriel, and Varda/Elbereth, while described as groundbases of influence, intimidation, and power, are rarely seen in an active way. Yet, if human, Maiar, and Elven ladies have been under-represented, Dwarven women and Hobbit women have been all but entirely omitted.
My admiration and love of the professor's works are endless and boundless, but this is, indeed, an incredible tragedy.... that has finally been remedied!
Elanora "Nori" Brandyfoot and Poppy Proudfellow are like music to my ears. Yes! Show me the little hobbit ladies running through the meadows, let's see these little women shape a big earth. I want it all.
(For those waiting to discuss the utter perfection that is Lady Disa, she obviously deserves her own post which I will remedy tomorrow).
With that said, I'm excited to see how Hobbit culture is portrayed beyond the realm of the shire. We know that migratory Hobbits existed, but its interesting to see them move as a tactic of avoidance, rather than trade. Hiding away as a means of protection, never staying too long to avoid discovery. Being shy of traders also makes this absolutely necessary as their only means of survival is traveling to a new area that will allow for hunting and foraging, rather than farming or trading.
I've seen much said about their humor, but it felt good and genuine. It's also nice to see that mistrust of strangers wasn't a strictly a 3rd age problem.
I'd love to see how the Harfoots begin to set down roots, create and facilitate trade between other Hobbits and hopefully see more adventurous cottage-girl hobbits. The idea that Nori Brandyfoot, or at least her kin, might somehow down the line be connected with Sadoc Brandybuck? If that is the implication, it would be a very fun Easter egg, indeed.
I'm stoked to see how these ladies interact with whatever Maiar they've found and inherited, be it Gandalf, Balrog, or Bombadil himself. I'm excited for these little hobbit girls to see the world they've always hidden from, and it is about time too.

Tau Herculids from Space Image Credit & Copyright: Zhuoxiao Wang, Yangwang-1 Space Telescope, Origin.Space
Explanation: On May 31 tens of parallel meteor streaks were recorded in this 8 degree wide field of view of planet Earth's limb from space. The image is one of a series of 5 minute long observations by the orbiting Yangwang-1 space telescope. It was captured at 03:43 UT, near the peak of the Tau Herculid meteor shower. As predicted, the meteor shower was an active one this year, caused as Earth swept through a relatively dense stream of debris from disintegrating Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, but was lacking bright meteors. Nearly all of the Tau Herculid meteors in the Yangwang-1 image are too faint to be detected by groundbased instruments. But on that date patient earthbound skywatchers under clear skies still enjoyed a memorable showing of the Tau Herculids.

M16 and the Eagle Nebula : A star cluster around 2 million years young surrounded by natal clouds of dust and glowing gas, M16 is also known as The Eagle Nebula. This beautifully detailed portrait of the region was made with groundbased narrow and broadband image data. It includes cosmic sculptures made famous in Hubble Space Telescope close-ups of the starforming complex. Described as elephant trunks or Pillars of Creation, dense, dusty columns rising near the center are light-years in length but are gravitationally contracting to form stars. Energetic radiation from the cluster stars erodes material near the tips, eventually exposing the embedded new stars. Extending from the ridge of bright emission at lower left is another dusty starforming column known as the Fairy of Eagle Nebula. M16 lies about 7,000 light-years away, an easy target for binoculars or small telescopes in a nebula rich part of the sky toward the split constellation Serpens Cauda (the tail of the snake). via NASA
