Let’s be honest here, many of us can relate to a character who naturally has parental issues but none gets me down than following my heart. Seeing the main character relate to Princess Ariel in The Little Mermaid is so emotional at best. Inspired and dedicated by many users, here’s my cast for this Italian wonderful Pixar movie of a time about Luca. the rivers overlap

it was a brisk morning. the wind brought with it a chill and cloud cover sky that changed an otherwise perfect day. though it was spring according to the time of year, the weather had yet to get the memo. still, griffin woke with an exploratory passion in their head. they desired nothing more than to explore the city of new york with their close friend cooper, giving him a call soon after waking.

“cooper, be ready to explore the city in 30 minutes. meet me at our spot.” they instructed.

“huh? wait what’s happening?” grumbled cooper. he had just woken himself and had yet to arrive to himself fully. some of his blood was occupied in his southern hemisphere, more quickly rushed there at the sound of his friend’s strict but kind tone.

“our spot. the city. 30 minutes. love you bro.” griffin said quickly as he was searching for the perfectly yassified outfit to explore the city with his bro.

“okay yeah sure” griffin mumbled pulling himself out of bed.

griffin, of course, arrived first. but only by a few seconds. their timing was uncanny. they greeted each with a quick bro kiss, as they always did. there adventures were only as good as the starting kiss, and this was a good one, giving both parties a little chub. maybe one day they’d admit their feelings for each other and become more than bros. maybe today was that day.

their adventure started at a thrift store. the shop had little to offer in means of a yassifiable clothing, but more than made up for it in fun for the two to have. griffin tried on several items to model for cooper, each more revealing than the last. they had hopes of piquing the interest of their friend, or at least peaking his pants. after that seemed to have failed, griffin saw a mannequin. the likeness to cooper was uncanny. “this gives me an idea to be part of our tiktok recap of the adventure.” seconds later cooper was posing on an adjacent table imitating the mannequin and griffin was filming away on his phone, growing more and more fond of their friend.

their adventure next took on an intimate walk through the city to their next destination. they were both enjoying the walk in a way that was anything but platonic, still neither had worked up the courage to admit their feelings to the other. instead they made jokes because they loved to see the other smile. the joke that they decided to film for the tiktok was one of a twink radar. they both knew that the other was the twink for them.

along their walk they passed another thrift store. here, they found some great yassifiable clothes. griffin pointed several things out to cooper, explaining several ways to yassify each one. cooper hung onto every word, each a sweet treat from his desired lover. the feelings soon became too much for cooper, he quickly found something to break the tension.

he held up a grey tank top that boasted the italian flag and the word “italia.” “yassify this one,” cooper challenged with a laugh.

griffin laughed at their little inside joke. they were slightly aroused by the challeging tone of cooper and the intimate nuance of an inside joke. “that’s perfect!” he responded, pulling out his phone. “don’t move!” griffin opened his camera app and filmed a quick clip of his friend holding the tank top to add to the tiktok.

they took another intimate stroll after leaving the shop. this time it took them through one of the city’s parks. they got lost in a deep conversation that neither of the two cared about the chill in the air. they also both thought the other looked so cute with the little patch of red on their nose. the came to a crossing of two rivers in the park. griffin was struck with inspiration for the final clip of their tiktok.

“okay sit there. im going to make a himbo comment about these two rivers and then i’ll walk over to you and we’ll kiss. it’ll drive our fans crazy,” griffin explained with a giggle. they were giddy at the fact that cooper was going along with the plan.

cooper thought the clip idea was one of genius. he also felt overjoyed by the ending. he didn’t give the slightest hint of this though, playing reluctant for the show of it.

“these rivers… overlap,” griffin stated. then they walked over, leaned in, closed their eyes, and kissed cooper. they would end the clip for the tiktok there. “it’ll leave them in suspense,” he’d justify later. though the real reason was something they weren’t ready to share yet.

as griffin pulled away from the kiss, cooper reached up and pulled them back in for a longer, more intimate kiss. this left griffin speechless as they pulled away for a second time, this time ending the video. “there’s two takes for the tiktok, just in case,” cooper explained jokingly. the look of disappointment on griffin’s face must of been obvious because cooper quickly added, “actually griffin-”

before he could finish the sentence, griffin had grabbed him by the cheeks and pulled him up for a kiss that would have gotten them burned at the stakes in the 1600s. it was one of passion, of tension, of release. the two mouths practically became one having shared both saliva and tongues. when the finally parted, griffin simply said “i know, bro. i feel the same.”

the two took each other’s hand and journeyed back to griffins college dorm. there they shared a night of lust for each other’s body and love of each other’s mind. in bed the next morning, their bodies overlapped, just as the river in the park had.

You nuzzled yourself into the hammock in John B's backyard. While all your friends were off at work, you had the day off. The sound of a car door snapped out of your relaxation. Jumping up and heading over, you expected to see one of your friends. Instead you got greeted by the two men that shot at you and your friends at the marsh.

Your eyes widened in fear, their glare meeting yours. Attempting to run away, you heard their footsteps chase after you. Your body twisted to the side after one of the man's hands grabbed hold of your arm to spin you around. The other man held you to his chest, your arms pinned down to your side.

"Let go of me!" You screamed, thrashing in his arms. "I'm barely touching you!" The man laughed, his grip tightening on you. "Listen cupcake, we don't want anything to do with you. Where's the compass?" The man in front of you growled, grabbing your chin to make you look at him. "I don't know!" You lied through your teeth. The man holding you threw you to the ground, both of them hovering over you. 

You scrambled on the ground, trying to crawl away to run but one of the men grabbed your leg, his nails digging into your skin as he dragged you back towards him. His leg reached back, powering up to kick you in your stomach. You yelped, grabbing onto your side as tears streamed from your eyes. He repeated his action, watching you squirm in pain. 

You were curled up in a ball, hands covering your head. The men looking down at you, crouching down to get to your level. "Tell John B this was a warning." They left you there in the grass, your body shaking and your eyes still squeezed shut. You wheezed as you slowly got up, a sharp pain near your ribs.

Dragging yourself back in, you headed straight into your best friend JJ's room, not before stopping in the kitchen to grab an ice pack. You limped your way into his room, carefully laying down onto his bed. You took a deep breath before letting out a loud sob, covering your face with your hands.

Your body shook in pain, the ice sending cold shivers throughout your injured body. Finding his nearest sweatshirt, you cuddled into the fabric, taking in the smell of his cologne that slightly calmed you.

You felt stupid. You felt stupid for not defending yourself, you felt absolutely dumb for not standing up for yourself. But seeing the two met right in front of your face made you feel like a deer caught in headlights. You didn't want anyone to know, especially JJ. You didn't want him to pity you or get himself killed trying to fight them.

You curled yourself up on his bed, your eyes fluttering shut as you held the ice pack against your side.

You woke up to the sound of a voice in the living room calling your name. Freezing in your spot, you quickly realized it was JJ. You got out of the bed quickly, only to flinch in pain. You took a deep breath, biting your tongue as you headed out to the living room.

"There you are Y/N! Wait, are you limping?" JJ asked, walking towards you letting his hands rest on your waist to hold you up. "Oh it's nothing!" You laughed, "I took a nap in the hammock earlier and I turned over but I ended up falling out and I landed on my ankle." You grinned, hiding everything that truly happened.

"Aw poor baby." He pouted. You jokingly rolled your eyes. You grinned as he took your hand in his, leading you to the pull-out-couch. He laid on it, his arms wide for you to come join him.

Without hesitation you joined him, one of his arms resting underneath your head, the other pushing your hair out of your face. Your legs intertwined together, enjoying each other's warmth. In JJ's arms, you felt safe, you felt secure. Like nothing bad could ever happen to you.

His hand that moved the hair out of your face rested on your waist. You flinched, letting out a small cry of pain as you sat up. Your eyes widening as you felt JJ immediately sit up with you, his hand resting on your back. "Are you okay?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowing. "I don't know how to answer that." You answered truthfully.

Your eyes began to water, your heartbeat racing in your chest. "I gotta go." You spoke, getting up off the couch and heading towards the door. JJ shook his head and followed after you, blocking you as soon as your hand touched the doorknob. "Y/N, what happened to you?" You bit your lip as your eyes began to water.

The exhale that escaped your lips was wavering, clearly showing him that you weren't okay. He wrapped his arms around you as you leaned into his arms, your tears soaking his shirt as he watched you cry in his arms. "Hey, hey princess, what happened." He mumbled in your ear. 

You squeezed your eyes shut as you took a deep breath. "The square groupers stopped by when you guys were out." JJ's body immediately tensed at your words. "What did they do to you?" His voice was barely audible, not prepared for your answer.

You shifted in your spot, pulling away from him, lifting your shirt up to reveal patches of bruises along your side. JJ's mouth fell open in disbelief as he saw how dark and painful it looked. "And there's this." You said, lifting your leg up to point out the scratches left by the square grouper.

"Y/N! Why the fuck didn't you tell me when I first came home?" JJ raised his voice. "It's no big deal, it's just a few scratches." You mumbled, watching him pace back and forth.

"It's a big deal Y/N are you kidding me! I'm gonna kill them. If they think they're gonna get away with-" "No, listen to me!" you raised your voice, instantly making him back down. Your gaze moved down to the ground, feeling JJ stare at you, "they told me to tell John B this was a warning. Don't do anything stupid because of this." you exhaled. He sighed, rubbing his face with his hand. 

"Okay. Okay, I'm sorry." He exhaled, opening his arms out towards you. You immediately wrapped yourself around him, "don't apologize, thank you for caring but I don't want it to get worse." You mumbled into his chest, nuzzling your face in the crook of his neck.

He held you in his arms, softly swaying you back and forth. "I'm right here, Y/N. You're okay."

“JJ please put that away,” you plead. You mind wandering to all the possibilities of things going wrong.

“Why?” He says waving the gun around loosely, “you afraid of it?” He says condescendingly, dangling it in your face and then mimicking gun shots.

‘yes.’ You wanted to admit.

“No, asshat. Just put it down, I don’t want to die,” you explain.

“Are you dumb? Remember when those square groopers shot at us last time. I’m just evening the playing field,” he explains, then points the gun out to sea with his hand on the trigger.

“Bang,” he says, moving the gun to the right, “bang,” he whispers.

“You are so immature,” you groan.

“Pope toss me a beer?” You ask, not taking your eyes off JJ and his gun.

“This beer tastes like shit, Kie,” you chuckle, pouring the rest off the side of the boat.

“Hey! Well I had to bring the bad kind because my dad wouldn’t notice if I took the cheap ones.” she explained.

“Can’t wait ‘till we’re filthy rich and don’t have that problem,” John B says taking a sip.

“Can we talk about the split. I know we said evenly...but I’m the only one that can properly defend us,” Jj says handling the gun again.

Pope scoffs, “JJ, you haven’t had training,” he says.

“I think at least a 5% boost,” Jj reasons and everyone ignores him.

He is sitting next to you, still pointing his gun at nowhere. You roll your eyes at his cocky behavior, he turns to you, smirking.

“What is wrong with you?” You joke, going to push his shoulder playfully. When you do, he fakes surprise and pulls the trigger of the gun. Firing a shot.

“Ah!” You scream, involuntary wrapping your arms around JJ’s neck, pulling yourself into his chest.

“Whoa there y/n, hold me a little tighter will you?” He chuckles.

You furrow your eyebrows and pull away and off his lap, “I hate you,” You grumble.

He just laughs and everyone teases you.

You pout and how easily he was able to embarrass you.

“Let’s stop here!” Kie shouts, “I wanna go swimming,” she smiles.

John B nods and stops the boat. Kie, Pope, and John B are the first to strip off their clothes and jump in. You laugh and pull off your shirt.

Before you can jump off the side, you feel chilled hard object press against your back. You freeze.

When you realize what it is your eyes widen, “JJ...this isn’t funny,” you say suspiciously.

“Relax, Y/n,” JJ says through a smirk. He decides to drag the gun down your back, causing you to shiver.

“JJ you’re insane!” You say nervously.

“I’m just helping you get over your fear,” he chuckles, you turn your head to face him and he drags the gun down your arm.

“Oh my god, what if you...JJ you’re scaring me,”

“I would never hurt you, but I will hurt anyone who tries.” He says, sending chills down your spine, and your stomach twirling with butterflies.

I blame Groopers. Big Groopers are filled with worms. Worms infiltrate things.

That's my only explination.

That game was actually at the top of my list for why I wanted a Gamecube. So much so that I’d even downloaded a Super Mario Sunshine speed run from Speed Demos Archive just to see that game in action. If you can’t tell, I even printed my own custom box art I downloaded off the internet to replace the generic Gamestop label.

I was ready to love this game. I really thought I would.

I’ve seen it all. The surfing time trial in the harbor, Mecha Bowser, hopping on glowing mushrooms beneath that one level with the giant palm trees, the watermelon festival, King Boo. I know what Super Mario Sunshine is like. And I haven’t just seen it on video once. I may not feel like hooking up my Gamecube right now, but I also started a new game on Sunshine about a year or two ago in Dolphin:

So even on this replay, I’m about halfway through the game. I stopped because I got bored. (Hmm!)

On the flip side, you sound like the sort of person who’s had to defend Super Mario Sunshine before. I can’t imagine why that would be the case.

You’re splitting hairs, regardless. The second time you fight Petey, it’s only really different because you fight him in a slightly more open space where he gets a chance to move around more -- but it’s largely still the same fight. Fill him with water, stomp him when he’s full.

You also fight Gooper Blooper three times, and the fight barely changes each time. Pull enough limbs off that you feel safe enough grabbing his mouth, repeat.

And what about every time you have to chase down Shadow Mario? Are you going to tell me that’s some sort of amazing revelatory encounter that changes dramatically every time you do it? Because it doesn’t. You run through the same level you’ve already spent close to an hour inside of already. And you have to do that, what? Nine times?

And then you have to race Piantissimo. Which, when you think about it, can be kind of similar to chasing Shadow Mario. And how many times do you have to THAT? Seven times? You only had to race Koopa the Quick twice in Mario 64.

How many worlds have multiple red coin challenges? Depending on how picky you want to get, if you include the fact that every “Secret Of...” mission has a secondary red coin variant, every area has like 4-5+ red coin missions.

What about that part in Noki Bay where you climb all the way up to the top of the waterfall, get the shine, and then on the next shine, you have to climb all the way back up to that same spot again for a different shine that’s basically right next to it? And is that the only shine where something like that happens? I don’t think it is.

Each world in Sunshine has maybe one or two missions that do something unique and the rest are all repeating the same stuff you do in every other world in the game. Another level without the jetpack, another red coin challenge, another race with Piantissimo, refighting another boss you already defeated once, another Shadow Mario chase... think about it: each world has around eight missions, and I just named five that repeat across just about every world in the game. Even if the settings they take place in are different, the game is very low on unique ideas or surprises.

If you like Super Mario Sunshine, that’s fine. But you have to accept that means you can tolerate lots of repetition, and I think you should ask yourself why exactly that is. Is it because it’s a Mario game, and Mario is “always” good? Or do you really like grinding out 240 blue coins?
