Tiny Haven Gazette #3

In which I drop the gazette format because it takes an ungodly amount of time and nobody cares. 🎉

My house gets a first floor, and coincidentally, my storage doubles, which is a relief. That should free me from spending 30mn every day desperately trying to figure out what to part with for at least a month.

So much space!

And now that it’s been upgraded, I get more customization options and can change the outside of my house!

By sheer dumb luck, I finally figure out how to get money trees!!!! I can’t believe it took me so long (although I’m very happy I never looked the answer up online). I should have known there was something up with the glowing golden hole that appeared whenever you dug up some money, that thing was clearly magic!

My pockets were full, so I had no choice but to bury back the money bag I’d just dug out, and this happened. Honestly considering how often I walk around with full pockets I’m astounded this didn’t happen sooner.

So now I have a little money tree orchard. Next experience: does the money tree give you MORE money if you plant a bigger money bag? Tried it this morning, will get an answer in a few days.

I can’t stop thinking about that sweet little cow I saw on @astorytotellyourfriends​​ ‘s island last week, so I decide to build the last house in the hopes of finding her on an island and inviting her over. 

In the process, I realize I could have built myself a beach house all along.

Damnit!

To my horror, however, the very next morning, the house has been sold to a stranger!

Thankfully, my new neighbour, while not being Norma, is just as sweet.

I covet her living room SO BADLY. And also I kinda wanna eat her. Why would you design a rhinoceros to look like a cake?! She must get nightmares where people run after her, trying to bite off her strawberry horn.

Shortly after, and as a result of me ignoring him completely for a few days, Phebus FINALLY decides to leave the island.

I actually took a chance when I decided to talk to him, considering that’s the way he always looks.

“Good luck with the neighbours, their stories and their problems... you’re going to need a good dose of patience!”

That shouldn’t be a problem because, unlike you, I actually like people!

And because I like people, of course, joke’s on me, because I feel super sad to see him leave. 🙄

Following his departure, I start buying mystery island tickets like a crazy person, hoping to bump into Norma, but so far, no luck.

Why did I meet so many chickens?!

It’s the second day Phebus’s old house is on sale and I’m sure it’ll get sold to a random NPC any second now. The stress is intense!

I don’t know what’s up with them but everyone on the island keeps asking me if they should change their catchphrases! After the tenth time, I finally give in with Lili, assuming she’ll just come up with a new one on her own, but then am faced with a horrible screen that is asking ME to come up with something on the spot!

Have I mentioned how much I love it when she makes that face?

It took me ten minutes and some internet research to come up with this. This is too big of a responsibility!!

At least she was happy about it.

I’ve gone back to refusing to help the others, though. At least not until I can come up with proper catchphrases for them!

For the very first time, I get asked to play postman for my villagers. See, Nacer’s been bonding with Kali (no wonder, since they’re both jocks), but he was too shy to give him a present himself.

“Kali has helped me so much, I picked up a present for him. But I’m too shy to give it to him myself...”

Feeling like cupid, I hurry to Kali’s house. 👼🏹💘

“A frog costume! Oh la la!”

I have to admit that wasn’t the kind of gift I’d been expecting considering how much they both love sports, but ok!

“Did Kali say something about the gift?”

That was super cute, I hope I’ll get more requests like it!

In the span of one week I must have learnt about 20 new mimics, which, honestly, I find baffling. Most of them are just sliiiiight variations, it’s ridiculous. In the game I used to work on we ended up with about 50 expressions per character, but that was because they needed to express a wide range of emotions in very subtle ways. You don’t need that for cute island critters, especially when emoting is such a slow process in the first place!

Justine visits again one night, which gets everyone on the island talking.

“Since we have a visitor, I’ve baked some cakes. I hope she’ll like them...”

“I absolutely MUST tell her ‘hi’ before she leaves!”

“No, don’t mind me, you’ve got a visitor! Focus on being a good hostess!”

I like their reactions so much I spend more time speaking with my islanders than my visitors whenever I have one, haha.

Also, I love the smoke trails in the sky whenever a plane leaves. That small connection to a bigger world is very comforting.

“Good evening, sweets! Grum grom grom... My tummy also says good evening!”

Later we play to a little game with freakishly accurate results.

“Let’s play! Tell me your favourite color, and I will tell you what food you are.”

“You chose orange, which means you’re easy to live with, but you can also sometimes feel lonely.”

In the end, he said I was an onion. Layers, y’see.

I also finally figure out how to eavesdrop on people’s conversations, and get treated to many a story.

Lili : I just read my horoscope... You’re not gonna believe it! It’s sick!

Phebus : What am I supposed to not believe, exactly? The horoscope, or the fact that you managed to read it through? You know what, just tell me what it said, let’s get this over with.

Lili : Listen to this... “Your travels will bring good surprises.” Isn’t that sick?! Especially for me, because I love good surprises!

Phebus : Um... I guess? I mean, I don’t know. How did that make you sick? I’m confused.

Lili : Nah, just wait! After that, I went shopping, and it was the spring sales! Get that, I got a sweet little dress on sale! I was so happy I thought I was going to pass out!

Phebus : What?! Don’t kid with that! D’you need me to call for help?

Lili (totally ignoring him) : So anyway I put on my new dress and went for a walk. And that’s when it started raining big time, and I got drenched... Why didn’t my horoscope warn me about that?!

Phebus : I don’t know... have you tried reading the weather column instead?

I catch Vanessa and Maëlle talking about a movie they both watched... except they both remember it very differently...

Maëlle : Oh, Vanessa, thanks for lending me that movie, I loved it! The costumes were gorgeous... I want the leading lady’s straw hat!

Vanessa : And that chase in hydro planes! Pfiiiiiiiouuu, ppfffz, ka-BOUM! That was awesome sauce!

Maëlle : And that dress with golden trimmings that she wears at the picnic... that was fine art!

Vanessa : And what about the fight against the giant robot? When he punches a hole in the planet? Whazaam!

Maëlle : Yes! He really stole the scene with his diamond plates... It must have cost a fortune! ... ... Wait, did you say he punched a hole in a planet? Was that before or after the ball?

Later, I find the same two talking about Maëlle’s insect infestation problem (probably caused by all the sweets she keeps in her house, just saying). When she asks me what I would do, I tell her I’d just move out, which gets me a VERY judgmental look from Vanessa.

“How do you manage to get rid of them?”

Vanessa’s solution, in the end, is for Maëlle to sell her house to “an insect-loving weirdo”. I wish I knew if that was a dig at Abraham or if it’s just a coincidence.

“Bah, that can’t be impossible. You just need a real weirdo who thinks insects aren’t so bad!”

Lili and Raymond get into a big argument about Lili’s cooking skills...

Raymond : By the way, Lili, I haven’t thanked you for lunch the other day! It was very good!

Lili : “Very good”? Seriously, don’t you have something even more corny? Nobody says that anymore! Don’t you mean it was delicious? Or maybe extremely refined? Or maybe super exquisite?

Raymond : Oh! You’re right, I’m sorry. Um, it was... delectable... succulent... A concentrate of sheer deliciousness!

Lili : And?

Raymond : And... every bite sent my taste buds into a transcendental ecstasy?

Lili : Oh! Is that a question or a statement, Raymond?

Raymond : A statement, of course! Pff... All that to describe a stupid sole meunière...

Lili : Don’t tell me you’ve just called my sole meunière, my mother’s own recipe!, “stupid”?!

I’m still amazed that they parted in good terms, I thought for sure Lili would keep on fuming

After trying to get my first residents to spruce up their apartments, with mitigating results...

I mean, the ball, jars and punching sack are all gifts of mine, so that’s cool he’s got them all out at the same time, but that’s still a sad little barren house.

I finally look it up online and discover their houses are actually not supposed to be like this at all! Turns out poor Nacer, Vanessa, Abraham, Renée and Lili are all stuck with generic houses because they got to my island too soon!

This is what Renée’s house should look like! 

So I’ve decided to try and gift them all their true houses’ furniture, little by little. I know they can’t change their wallpapers or floors, but hopefully if I get them the right couches, beds, etc, they’ll display them all. 🤞

Olur Larek, Half-Orc Paladin (PC) he/him, 41 [Reference Pack] Alive

Definitely “team dad”, Olur is always there to provide healing for the party. Though he probably stresses out and worries too much, he is a strong leader with a just heart, willing to die to protect those he loves. On top of being team dad, he is an actual father as well. He and Steele have three children. Olur’s ultimate goal is to settle down with his family, but first he has to make the world a safer place to do it.

Kukyo, Vanaran Huntress (PC) she/her, 19 Alive

Kukyo has a habit of getting herself and the party into trouble. Her inexperience and curiosity usually get the better of her, but she is trying to figure out her place in the world. She and her brother Nyuwganga are the product of a Lamashtan cult, and Kukyo finds difficulty in understanding the world outside of her troubling beginnings. With the help of the party, she is learning to make better decisions, and is distancing herself from her dark past.

Steele, Tiefling Brawler (NPC) she/her, 50+ [Reference Pack] Alive

Team mom, actual mom as well. Steele’s favorite place to be is in the fight, she is incredibly skilled at hand to hand combat. Though she doesn’t share Olur’s sense of justice, she enjoys fighting and does want to make the world a better place for her kids, so she tags along. She is very grounded and keeps Olur and the rest of the party in check, and tends to have good, unbiased advice on most situations. So far, Olur’s never beaten her in a sparring match. 

Alagon Brannor, Elf Arcanist (PC) he/him, 120+ [Reference Pack] Alive

Though he came into the picture later than others, Alagon had no issues fitting in with the group, especially with fellow mage Skreeach Surefang. Upon first arriving, Alagon was fearful and easily startled by everything, never before having left the safety of his library in the Archenwilde. However, as the gravity of the situation hit and new information unfolded, Alagon was quickly swooped into a need to apply his knowledge to save others. At the end of the day, his primary goal is to uncover the secrets of whatever magic he can, but he has a heart of gold and hates to see others suffer. His relationship with Skreeach eventually grew into love and they are now together.

Skreeach Surefang, Dragonborn Spellslinger (NPC) he/him, 35+ [Reference Pack] Alive

Since the day he arrived, Skreeach was a curiosity and a bit of an outcast. Hired later by Grant, he came into the party only a bit before Alagon did. Their thirst for knowledge and new magic quickly drew them together and they became best friends. After traveling with the party for some time, Skreeach made some mistakes along his path, driving a wedge between he and his friends. Driven by his love for Alagon and the first real family he’d ever known, Skreeach made things right in the only way he knew how. The party forgave him, and Skreeach wasted no time admitting his love for Alagon, and they are now officially together.

Rin (sometimes goes by Cake), Kitsune Ranger (PC) she/her, ancient Alive

Rin’s optimism and airheaded nature know no bounds, but she has a way of keeping situations light. She is a kitsune, possessing the ability to present as human or fox. She loves nature and life, which begs the question of why she took so quickly to the dark and mysterious Aphonis. Rin’s past is shrouded in mystery, but she hunts down the answers. She is close to just about everyone in the party as she is impossible to dislike, but she seems to hold a special relationship with Aphonis and Olur. As of recently, she is married to Aphonis.

Aphonis, Changeling Cleric (NPC) she/her Alive??

Though Aphonis’ relationship with the party started off rocky, she always had an affinity for Rin. In the beginning, she wore a mask and was entirely mute, though she kept close to Rin and their relationship grew. Over time, Aphonis revealed herself to the party, and through blessing of her goddess her voice was returned to her. In a constant state of death and life, Aphonis owes her life to and worships Urgathoa. Now in possession of Urgathoa’s divine instrument, Aphonis is her goddess’ champion. As of recently, Aphonis and Rin are married.

Lord Sebastian Grant, Human Wizard (NPC) he/him, ancient Leader of the Court of Ravens [Reference Pack] Alive

Long-time friend of Ank’ucha and to a lesser extent Olur. Grant is the employer of the party, as he gathered together Olur, Kukyo and Rin to do some field work for him and was the start of our heroes’ journey. Generally light-hearted with a good sense of humor, he swiftly became good friends with the party he helped bring together. Though he doesn’t travel with them, he stops in from time to time to pay them, give them items they may need, and has stepped in to help during several tense situations, evolving their relationship more from coworkers to allies. He enjoys tea and collecting rare artifacts, and has an affinity for birds, especially his flock of magical ravens.

Seerys, ???, ??? (NPC) any pronouns, ??? [Reference Pack] Alive

Banished inside a ring for millennia, he was found by Alagon, who donned the ring and discovered he couldn’t take it off. Upon using an identify spell, Alagon was pulled into the realm of Seerys and after talking with him for a while, promised to help. All we know about Seerys is two things: His memories have been wiped and he is missing his golden spoon. Our heroes are on a mission to find out the secrets of Seerys’ existence, where his golden spoon is, and why it’s so important to him.

Chieftain Ank’ucha, Human (NPC) he/him, 55+ Alive

The Chieftain of Tiber, and long-time friend to Grant and Olur. Ank’ucha is a kindly leader, if not a bit too kind. Sometimes he can falter when making decisions, but his council keeps him on the right path. He is a beacon of respect and hope in his community, a lover not a fighter. He is a father, his young child is an Oracle, which is a secret he keeps under tight wraps, with only his closest and most trusted friends knowing.

Lord Dryle, Elf Vampire Lord (NPC) he/him, they/them, 2,000+ [Reference Pack] Alive

A “boss fight” gone wrong introduced our heroes with Lord Dryle. They quickly realized he was a giant dweeb and not worth their time, but as months went by they kept in light contact with him since they had to pass through the village he was lording over several times. Though Dryle is generally an awful, irritating person, there is something about him that keeps bringing he and our heroes back together. Dryle eventually introduced Bailey to the party, dropping her off on them for a while as he took care of personal business, but upon his return he seems to have fully integrated into a regular visitor and ally.

Zathune, Blue Dragon (NPC) he/him, ?? Alive

Grumpy, snappy, generally unpleasant. A young blue dragon, and divine mount to Olur. Soul bound to the paladin as punishment by Gozreh, he is growing more accustomed to being a part of the team whether he likes it or not, but lately the glory and good deeds seem to be appealing to him.

Andre, Orcish Blacksmith (NPC) he/him, 60+ Alive

Olur’s uncle as well as dad-figure, he took Olur in as a child when his parents passed. Andre is huge, jolly, and always down to make you something neat out of metal. He isn’t really good at anything else. Except hugs, he’s really good at those.

To say Noc is strange is an understatement. He is full of curious tendencies and odd quirks, but he is kind and caring. He loves collecting things, playing video games, and eating, but most of all he is a crack shot with a sniper rifle. He is a non-traditional Kasatha in the sense that he does not cover his mouth with a veil or scarf.

Though a bit quirky, Rook is a friend the common folk would like to have. He tends to be forthright and hot-headed, but he acts for a good cause. His best friend is Mage Hand, by the name of Digit, whom Rook swears has a mind of his own. Together, Rook and Digit swindle the noble and give back to the poor.

ummmm i literally cannot think of a random fact,,,maybe that i really want a pair of carhart overalls??

nope, i think you can think someone is really hot when you first see them but i don’t think you can be in love with someone just by looking at them

i agree with some of the sentiment, i think a lot of times we allow our thoughts and fears to hold ourselves back but there are barriers to some dreams that are impossible to overcome

7. How long is the longest you’ve walked at one time?

oof like 12 miles maybe? i know i’ve been on some longer day hikes but i can’t remember any of their exact lengths. i really want to get in shape enough to hike a park near my house end-to-end in one go, which would be like 16 miles

i don’t know that i want a spouse+2.5 kids+a dog but i would really like to be with someone that loves me and a few animals and a close group of people around us that are like family to us? like a group of friends that we’re just really close to that we do all kinds of stuff with like big adventures or just sitting in someone’s backyard on a summer afternoon or going camping for a weekend? if that makes sense? like just a close group of people i can turn to always and have fun with

i was really into all the playmobile toys as a kid, i also loved taking all of my brother’s lego people and animals and just,,,lining them up in a row as if they were going to battle??

ohh i would really like to go back to like the revolutionary war period because i am a thot for the founding fathers but maybe like when mountaineering was first starting in europe also?? i think that would be really interesting to see. or like when the pirates were around maybe? there are tons of time periods i would love to go to

i can do so much more than i think i can!! i overcame a lot of stuff internally and got to do some pretty big, awesome things as a result, which is super cool to see and very promising when looking towards the future

2. best moment of the year?

i was lucky enough to travel quite a bit this summer so probably something during that time! got to go to the family cabin up by stevens pass with some good friends and went to like four countries in europe so its all kinda tied for best moment because i had so many great experiences 

4. what was the biggest change you experienced this year?

my brother moving to montana was pretty huge but also a lot of stuff changed personally like me getting a job i really enjoy and some Family Stuff that happened and wasn’t great

6. best album of the year?

according to spotify it would be something either by post malone or sufjan stevens according to how much i listened to of both but i also listened to the kids see ghosts album for the first time this year and really loved it

8. best book/book series this year?

sadly i didn’t read a ton this year but i really enjoyed ‘eiger dreams’ by jon krakauer and i read most of ‘sixty meters to anywhere’ by brendan leonard, who runs the awesome blog semi-rad

10. how was your love life this year?

disappointing to say the least, i’m sure everyone can tell from my blog that i am alone and sad about it lol

12. biggest regret of the year?

my procrastination for sure, it’s something that i always struggle with and this year it hit hard 

14. favorite place you traveled this year?

it was my first time going outside the country this year so that was awesome! i got to travel to canada, poland, the czech republic, germany, and switzerland but i would say switzerland was probably my favorite of all the places i went because we were in the alps and it was just incredible to see such huge mountains and experience a very different mountian culture

16. did you learn anything about your sexuality this year?

not really, i think i’ve got a pretty good grasp on who i am but i noticed towards the end of the year i’ve been more interested in guys than usual lmao

18. what surprised you the most this year?

honestly, how horrible some of my thoughts can be. about other people, the world around me, myself, you name it we got it

20. how did this year treat you in general?

this is something i need to think about more in depth when i just have some time with myself because to me it’s not really a question of how did the year treat me as much as it’s a question of how did i treat myself and how did i react to what was presented to me by the year? don’t think that answers the question but,,,,we need to do some more reflecting with ourself

22. has your fashion style changed this year?

sort of yeah! i started to somewhat buy clothes that are actually my size instead of a size or two larger, which i used to do a lot because i, like pretty much everyone, have insecurities about my body, and it’s been nice to not be absolutely swimming in things. i’ve also tried to make some more put together outfits when i have the energy and will, though i stay wearing a sweatshirt and jeans all the time lmao

24. who has made the biggest impact in your life this year?

probably one of my teachers from last semester, she’s someone who i know i can turn to when i’m struggling and who always has incredible advice for me and is willing to listen to me go on about all the shit that happens in my head, she’s an absolute legend
