âľ pick a fic and Iâll tell you my favorite line
For the Locked Tomb fic of your choosing.
[from here]
OMG thank you for the question! I picked slash and burn, my TLT fic with the fewest hits. It's pre-Resurrection John/Aâ, written for the TLT holiday exchange last year. I really had a blast writing Aâ's POV of tired overworked scientist John.
Johnâs got all the confidence in the world; when he speaks, and he really cares, nobody could ever look away. But this â talking to investors, handling review boards, discussion permits and funds and bureaucracy â John is shit at it. Early on, he used to make dorky jokes that never landed, so he stopped making them. These days, his voice gets a clipped snappy tone like heâs talking down everyone in the room; his neck gets flushed, his palms sweaty. He shoves his hands in his pockets and hunches his shoulders in a way that might give Aâ secondhand embarrassment if he could feel any, but also makes John look like heâs just begging to be punched in the face. Once, his laser pen slipped from his grip and clattered to the floor, and John panicked and kicked it away instead of bending to retrieve it, and then had to finish the presentation gesturing at Aâ when he needed to change slides. Whatever the opposite of rizz is, Johnâs got that in spades. âFuck you, I can do rizz. I just donât like asking people for money.â
Whatever the opposite of rizz is, Johnâs got that in spades. <- I know I am so right for this and also I am cacking to myself about it
[fic ask game!!!]

Poe/Finn: Finn stealing Poe's clothes (Poe doesn't mind).
âHave you seen myââ
âBlue shirt?â
âHowâd you know?â Poe asked, head still in the closet.
âIâm wearing it,â Finn said with a nervous laugh.
Poe turned.
âIs that okay? I can find something else if you wanted to wear it.â
âNo. I like it on you.â
âPoe, itâs not like at first. We have the time and resources for me to get my own clothes ifââ
âIs that what you want?â
âWhat? No. I like sharing with you. Itâs intimate.â Finnâs cheeks grew warm.
Poe pulled Finn into his arms. âI love the way things are.â
âGood. Me too.â

Yes, its happening to me too and its really fucking annoying. Iâve used ublock origin to get rid of the banner twice now, but it looks like the element I blocked has a randomly generated name, so its probably something I will need to keep doing. I think the whole thing is some sort of advertising stunt. Not sure if you noticed this, but there is a new tab labeled â1999Ⲡto the right of the âFollowingâ tab and if you click into it the blue areas of the page background changes to a marching-ants/static texture and a sponsored video ad starts playing...so it seems Tumblr has evolved again to accomplish new and more intrusive forms of advertising. Joy.
Is tumblr larping the Y2K scare now?
Does anyone else have this?

Hamburger Festival Report!
There's a pretty standard template for American town festivals: You block off a few streets (unless there's a park or something that makes sense to use instead), and rent spaces for people/organizations/businesses to set up booths. There'll be a stage or two with free entertainment--usually musicians, but there can be dance troupes, magicians, etc. in the mix. There may be some activities or contests tied into the festival theme, but the main events are a) eating, and b) wandering around looking at booths.
Sometimes this type of festival will have a carnival or midway attached to it, with rides and games, but these are not a required element of the standard American town festival. This one had a rock-climbing wall and a mechanical bull, interspersed with the typical booths, but that's it.
These festivals do not have to have a theme--where I grew up, it was just the TownName Street Fair--but a lot of them do. Food is the most common type of theme: you get Apple Festivals, Seafood Festivals, Tomato Festivals, Maple Syrup Festivals, all sorts. Something to do with local history and heritage is also common, like Old Time TownName Days. The amount of emphasis placed on the theme varies.
Since hamburgers are already a typical food to sell at festivals, they were very heavily represented at Hamburger Festival! The festival guide listed over forty different hamburger stands. I went around and took pictures of the menus for the ones that looked good, before deciding what to buy.
@griseldagimpel I think these two are probably the most innovative ones I saw!
There were some professional food trucks:
That second one had some interesting-looking options, too.
Here's another menu with some interesting options; this was one of a handful of stands offering a vegetarian burger option. (That Elvis one looks pretty innovative, too.)
There were a few stands offering the hamburger-with-a-crabcake-on-top, which sounded interesting, too.
Or if you just want a classic hamburger at a reasonable price, you could go with the stand run by the Boy Scouts:
Their burgers started at $5, and smelled pretty good!
Alcohol availability at town festivals varies regionally; in some parts of the US, it's considered inappropriate for alcohol (even beer) to be sold or consumed at events attended by families with children. Pennsylvania (where I live, and where Hamburg, PA is) used to be one of these, but our alcohol laws have been relaxing quite a bit over the last 10-15 years or so. As a result, Hamburger Festival does have beer and wine vendors.
However, they are limited to a fenced-off portion of the festival area, and if you buy a cup of beer you have to stay inside the fence to drink it. (Some of the vendors also offered discreetly-packaged bottles and cans to take home, but you are not allowed to open them on the premises.)
Of course, all of the food vendors are outside of the fence, so if you want to have a beer and a hamburger simultaneously, you have to buy the burger first, and take it into the Designated Beer Area.
This I did; I went with the Brie and Apricot Jam one, and a cranberry-ginger hard cider. (My other top choice for the burger was the Heavenly Hog one, with the apple slaw.) Both were excellent!
Band playing in the Beer Area:
They also wisely placed the Great PortaPotty Cluster adjacent to the Beer Area:
Back outside of the Sin Zone, vendors include classic fair food:
And church bake sales:
Nonfood vendors include crafters/artisans, like this metalworker:
The Starship Enterprise was like $500, so I didn't buy it.
There are also crafters selling items with, uh, lower production values, and lower price points. There were a couple of booths selling 3-D printed fidget toys. I considered this polar bear, because it almost looks like Autism Creature:
But in the end I went with something else, which I will share a little later.
They also this, a version of the betta-in-a-cup that won't make @kaxen mad:
Pictured: The only kind of fish you should keep in such a tiny container!
Also represented were various kinds of MLM schlock:
Like this CutCo Knives stand; there was also a Pampered Chef one, several of the jewelry ones, and the one that does dip mixes and stuff; it isn't Taste of Home (that's a magazine), but it's something like that.
I did buy some seasoning mixes, but I got them from this decidedly more amateurish-looking (and cheaper) place, which also sold soap.
Another performance space; this one had a bluegrass trio that was actually pretty good.
Here a child had a stand selling 3D printed gizmos:
Where I obtained this treasure:
Her mother, it developed, had been highly skeptical that anyone would want to buy these, but I assured her that it was brilliant, and my favorite purchase of the day.
I also got take-home cider, the aforementioned spices and soap, some tea, and alpaca-fiber insoles. (My feet were sore, by that point.)
Another interesting thing, which I did not take any pictures of, is the evidence of widely-varying attitudes toward the festival, by the people who actually live on the streets where it takes place. The people behind the stand where I bought my brie-and-apricot burger had festooned their knee-high garden wall with wire and signs saying DO NOT SIT ON WALL, because, I guess, that harms them in some way, if someone does that. Other residents were having porch-parties to watch the festival, or were manning coolers of sodas and bottled water, usually for a dollar apiece (with this competition, most of the official vendors were also selling water and sodas for a dollar, but I bought from one of the porches anyway).
Anyway, to sum up, it was kind of neat; I don't necessarily have a burning desire to go again (although I would like to try that burger with the apple slaw), but I'd also be willing to go again. I spent way too much money on crap, but it's no fun going to something like that and not buying stuff.

And our winner of the John Bracket isâŚ
(ID: a photo of Mark Gagliardi, voice actor of John Peters, you know, the farmer? edited to be wearing a straw farmerâs hat with the WTNV eye on the band of the hat, topped with a gold crown with a light green jewel. End ID.)
John Peters, you know, the farmer? (Welcome to Night Vale)!
Congratulations to all of you who voted and helped bring our beloved local provider of imaginary corn his crown. (We put some imaginary corn in his crown as well.)
Now for the rest of the podium!
(ID: a podium consisting of three greek-style columns. The previously described picture of John Peters, you know, the farmer? is on the highest column. The Gareth David-Lloyd version of John Watson is on the second highest column and has been edited with a silver medal around his neck. Fanart of John Doe and Arthur Lester by @misspelled-magic is on the third highest column, a bronze medal is edited around both of their necks. There is a dumpster on the ground in front of the columns, containing fanart of John Gaius by @griseldagimpel and seven raccoons. End ID.)
John Watson (Sherlock Holmes) fought bravely and has well earned his second place. He is a John famous in all of his adaptations, at least when ACD remembers that heâs not a James.
In the Third Place Round, John Doe (Malevolent) has seized that coveted bronze with the help of his many vocal adoring fans. Your demonic babygirl has curbstomped Jod and avenged my blorbo, and so I thank you sincerely. He and Arthur have this nice get-along-medal to wear.
John Gaius (The Locked Tomb), Necrolord Prime, First Reborn, Emperor Undying, Kindly Prince, Lord of the Sharpest Edge, Scourge of Death has gotten dunked on so hard they booted him right off the pedestal. Yeah, heâs in that dumpster over there. Heâs king of the raccoons now. Trash Overseer, Overseer of the Trash Children, Garbagelord Prime <3
And thatâs it for the Johns! The Jack prelims start tomorrow, and donât forget that after the Jack bracket, there will be a John-related names bracket in which my strictness will be severely reduced: if you can prove the nameâs John-adjacent, chuck in the blorbo! But first, Jacks!
#results#polls#john peters you know the farmer?#welcome to night vale#john watson#sherlock holmes#john doe#malevolent#john gaius#the locked tomb#sorry not sorry about the gaius bias#he did kill my litol guy#<3#also thanks to monstermince for the edit#and the podium#muah

Thinking about the nature of John Gaius' powers: There's a duality to them. There's death energy but also life energy. He can stop hearts but also stop decay.
So, John's powers were, at the very least, on the way towards allowing him to recreate what his cryno project was attempting to do. The whole point of the project was to put people into a death-like state where food/water/waste/etc isn't a concern so that they could be packed into spaceships like sardines and moved to another planet.
John would need ships - and you don't get ships without some form of government, even if it was one John established himself - and the ability to revive people across distance (which John probably wasn't able to do early on), but I can see a plan John could have pursued if he'd prioritized saving people over retribution.
Alecto effectively gave him the power to do his cryno plan.
I LOVE that we still donât know the full scope of his powers. Very cool, very scary. Whatever they are, they clearly go far beyond necromancy / thanergy, and probably did so from the start. However, Iâm actually not that sure that Alecto bestowed those powers on John deliberately, and I tend to see it as a mixed blessing even in the best circumstances (and a horrible gamble in most of them).
IMO, the biggest sticking point is this: at one point, John was always going to get to the stage where the next step would be to âreach for the soulâ and find Alecto; and Iâm not sure he could have been able to handle that. In canon it happened in a moment of incredible stress, watching a close friend commit suicide in front of him, and he went absolutely insane.
From the way Johnâs POV describes it, though, I think it would have been overwhelming no matter what. Even if there had been no conflicts with the ships, no cow wall, even if he had agreed to go along with Câ plan and try to freeze the ice caps instead of focusing on revenge... would he still have felt the screaming soul of the Earth, and melted the poles in a moment of overwhelmed terror, just to make it stop?
To me, Johnâs backstory is less about how his human failings brought about the apocalypse, and more about how a random well-meaning human canât handle that amount of power and come out of it still recognisable. I think he was always going to destroy the world, one way or the other. Johnâs personal failings shape the way the Earth died, and the next ten thousand years of his life; but I donât think it actually made much of a difference to Earthâs ultimate fate. He was always going to destroy it, one way or the other.
(On Johnâs specific powers: Iâm also not sure if they were intentional on Alectoâs part, manifested that way because the Earth was dying [= thanegery] or because he was wrapped up in a project that involved dead bodies. But, even if he had been able to develop his powers to a point where he would go from controlling the dead to being able to put billions of living humans in suspended animation at no risk to their health... would that state have âkeptâ if the entire population had left Earth? He hadnât eaten Alecto yet, and we know necromancy doesnât work in space.)
Anyway. I think it would be possible that under the right specific super ideal circumstances, something good might have come of Alecto choosing a human to channel her powers; but it was a one in a billion chance. But I think itâs more in line with the themes of TLT â the Greek tragedy of it all! â that humans have very little agency when gods decide to interfere, and are just not meant to be receptacles of divine powers. If it hadnât been John, it would have been someone else. If it hadnât been the ships, it wouldâve been something else. I think they were always doomed.
#tlt meta#ntn#ejg#tlt#alecto#tlt thoughts#griseldagimpel#i feel very strongly that john exercised his right to free will and making shitty choices. but it only started to matter after he became go#imo. they were always doomed from the moment alecto decided to bestow a whole bunch of powers on a random human#without any instructions and screaming in his head#like he fucked up but she fucked up first#that's how u know they're made for each other#ask

I don't think a TLT a/b/o AUÂ necessarily needs to map the a/b/o castes to the necro/cav/other roles of TLT. They could be completely separate or correlated (the later is probably more realistic). Particularly because, out of all the TLT roles, only the necromancers are actually born into their role so the actual TLT split is necromancers/mundanes, because cavaliers aren't born with cavalier-specific abilities or behaviors. There are interesting implications and world-building opportunities either way, but I think its important to note that making cavs alphas and all other non-necros betas changes the dynamics of the TLT roles because now becoming a cav isnât even ostensibly a choice.
If you have the two systems be correlated so that most necros are omegas and most alphas become cavs (or most cavs are alphas, but not all alphas become cavs), you could still do what you were suggesting without altering the dynamics of TLT so much. (Assuming the goal isn't to alter the dynamics.)
Although TBH--and apologies for sticking my opinion in here even more than I already have--given that the a/b/o system is usually treated like gender, and Johnâs empire has relatively egalitarian gender politics, Iâm not sure that John would deliberately make an omega-run society, since he didnât make the Nine Houses a matriarchy. (I mean, yeah, necro/cav inequality serves a similar purpose wrt to House colonialism that gender roles did for pre-apocalypse colonialism, but if the a/b/o castes existed as a source of inequality before the apocalypse, I would expect things to follow the pattern set by gender equality--John's empire would be egalitarian wrt a/b/o role. If that makes sense?)
The Alpha/Beta/Omega roles of the Omegaverse don't map cleanly onto the Necromancer/Cavalier/Everyone Else roles of The Locked Tomb, do they?
I mean, Betas = Everyone Else. That much is obviously. But necromancers are a too Squishy Wizard to be Alphas, and Cavaliers are too much physical fighters to be omegas. I guess necromancers could be omegas, and the Nine Houses is an Omega-run society.
Need to think on this. My current big project is my G1deon/Wake/Pyrrha fan vid, but I want to write more Jarpedon. And the fandom is barren of John mpreg!

Spring Cabin Trip Report!
This time I stayed at Clear Creek State Park. It's right near Cook Forest--basically attached to it, except the parts that are attached don't have roads in them, so to get from one to the other you have to go the long way around, unless you happen to be in a boat. Anyway, it's in the northwestern portion of the state; same general area as where I was for the eclipse, just not quite as far.
Here we are on the approach to the cabin:
This park has several cabins arranged along the bank of the Clarion river, and thenuphill from those there's another row of four, which are the ones that allow dogs.
Here's the front view:
I picked this cabin in part because of its very convenient situation--you have the water point right there, and then the little building in the background, if you look between the cabin and my minivan, is the latrines. It also has a lot of stonework, inside and out, and the other best feature is the outdoor fireplace:
This ended up not being as important as I would have thought, because I had the best weather I've ever had on a spring trip. The only time it rained was after midnight going into Saturday morning. So I could have used the regular fire ring every night--but it worked out; it was pretty chilly the first two nights, and it was warmer than it would have been in the open, on the porch with that wooden settle drawn up to the fire. And then on the third night I made chicken and dumplings (thanks @griseldagimpel for the suggestion!) which required me to build up a big fire and let it burn all the way down to coals, so it was handy to be able to use the fire ring for cooking and the fireplace for sitting at.
Going inside, there's two rooms, a main room and a bedroom. First thing when you go in is the table:
And that's the bedroom you can see there on the right. Keep turning to the right, and here's the kitchen area:
These are the "rustic" cabins, which have electricity and kitchen appliances, but you have to tote water from outside. Continue rotating to the right...
This cabin is particularly well-provided with storage, with the dresser next to the stove and then the hutch beyond that. Rotate a bit further, and here's the fireplace:
This park has converted the old fireplaces to gas, rather than the woodstoves that they more often have, which is less picturesque, but a great deal more practical on cold nights. I also like the little stone ledge they have sticking out on the side there. I used it for my dishes & cutlery & tea things hamper:
And over on the other side I put my dishwashing station:
And here's a bit of environmental storytelling for you:
Really makes you wonder what people were doing with the beds! This cabin has one bedroom, containing two double beds and one set of bunks--not an arrangement I've ever seen before, in a state park cabin!
The bunk beds are there on the right; we'll turn a little that way...
I'm not really sure how else you could arrange the beds, if you were to decide to defy the three separate signs telling you not to, unless maybe people were moving one of them into the other room.
Now we'll head back out:
Oh look, there's a sleepy Sophie!
I will do another post tomorrow about Activities, but before we go, let's take a quick look at the river:
This was a short hike that we did on the first day, after we arrived and flung all of our stuff out of the car. You walk upriver for a bit, and there's this interesting little...I would call it a sandbar if there was any sand involved? A narrow strip of land about a yard/meter or so from the bank:
That's the upstream end of it, which comes to a point, and then the downstream end widens out like this:
I walked up and down there for a while, trying to figure out how something like that would form, and why it would stay there. Did not come to any conclusions.
Then on the other side of the trail there's the hill/mountain, which is a whole lot of this:
If I remember correctly, this particular section is one that Sophie found nasally fascinating; I don't really know why, but my best guess is deer. That night we took a nighttime walk down to the playfield next to the shower house to look at stars--here's what that looks like in the daytime:
And startled a very large group of deer who were grazing between the playground and the river. I first saw their eyes reflected in the flashlight, and thought there were maybe four or five, but then they decided they ought to run away--uphill and upstream, and away from the cabins and campground. They went more-or-less single file, passing through the beam of my flashlight, for what seemed like a very long time. I lost count of how many there were, and the sound of all of them bounding away through the leaves was like a much bigger and more active river than the one that was actually there.
Anyway, there aren't any pictures of that because it was dark, but this is approximately where it happened. I think that's why I took this picture, anyway.
