There's a lot of my own writing that I actually really like an am proud of. Some of it is stuff other people also appreciate [Quinine] and some of it not so much [Rondo (Revolution)]. However, I've always felt that the language in Chapter 14 of After Dark was some of my most beautiful.
When she has recovered, she tells him the progress they’ve made on the Eastern front. Between her words is the unspoken threat of confrontations. Of prismere whispers and crumbling Fae. Of endings. It goes unspoken that this is the last peaceful night they will have; she leaves in the morning for Bhaile and he would no more try to stop her than he would the tide. For all that she is Fateless, the task ahead is hers and hers alone. He can’t keep his eyes off her, aware that tomorrow she will be beyond his sight. She can’t resist touching him, aware that tomorrow her hands will hold only weapons and death. Neither sleep, aware that they might never do so again. When they come together, it is not rushed or frantic or desperate. They burn long and slow until the dawn bleeds red and all that’s left are ashes.
(There's more that I could share, especially from amoung my unfinished Deus Ex works, but I think I did manage some of my best words when I was constrained by the self-imposed limits of 100-word drabbles.)
Question for my fellow writers: what's your favorite passage that you've ever written? What sentences/paragraphs of yours do you reread that just fill you with emotion and make you go "fuck yeah, I wrote this"? What hits you different, gets your heart pumping and emotions flowing? I wanna see it!

Grim Onwig relationship headcanons
He's such a supportive lover and he'll give advice if you ask for it but if you just need him to listen quietly then he will
If you ever need something, just ask him. He'll quickly find what you need and steal it. Money? No problem. Painting? You got it, dove. A horse? Well, he's gonna ask a few questions but you'll get the horse
Grim wants to be with you but he has zero interest in traditional options like buying a house or getting married
Staying with him means being on the road constantly and never staying in one place for too long but if you'd rather have some stability in your life like having a consistent job or a home then he'll respect that and visit frequently
The only time he drops calling you dove is when he's very serious about something

Why does my brain see a gruff, coarse, probably illiterate middle-aged guy that treats the character with unexpected kindness and verbal affection, in a fantasy setting and immediately go 🎶“You are a da-ad, you’re a dad, boogie woogie woogie”🎶

you know what? fuck it. i’m gonna talk about this game because i love it and i want other people to give it a chance and hey maybe if other people give it a chance i will no longer have accidentally contributed quite literally thirty percent of the fandom’s fanfiction lmao
kingdoms of amalur is what dragon age inquisition wishes it was. there. i said it. it’s out there in the world, now, and you can fight me about it
here we go, friends:
everything that DAI does well? amalur does it better, with the sole exception of romance, because amalur is not about romance unless u count alyn shir whomst i love so much but honestly u cannot date her the way she DESERVES to be dated WHATEVER
but the thing is that amalur does not HAVE to be about romance. amalur is about hitting monsters very hard with a wildly fantastic array of weapons. amalur is about fate and choice and also, again, absolutely shredding shit into pieces. amalur is about treasure hunting and wars and sticking your nose into everyone else’s business in a way that i have only ever seen one (1) champion of kirkwall pull off in a way that works.
amalur has the best fucking take on Truly Weird Immortals that i’ve ever seen
like, listen, i cannot talk enough about how ABSOLUTELY BONKERS the fae are in this game. these writers REALLY LEANED IN to what a culture of creepy nature fuckers who do not die so much as regenerate would look like. interacting with the fae is fucking UNCOMFORTABLE in a lot of instances, because of how ABSOLUTELY GODDAMN ALIEN they are. amalur’s fae put literally every other immortal race in every other video i’ve ever played to fucking shame!!!!! i LOVE it!!!
yes, the human/elf NPC models can be a little weird-looking; they’re ugly in a way that real people are ugly, which i like, actually, but not everyone is like me. but honestly, it’s the backgrounds in this game that make it. it’s like walking through every single fairy dream you had as a child come to life. you want red-earth deserts? detyre. you want ancient forests with trees so wide they make you feel like an ant? dalentarth. you want a rotting jungle on the ocean? klurikon. you want greece? there’s DLC for that, and also a bunch of god-chosen stone giants who spout greek poetry. there’s a whole island of undead pirates. there’s the plains of erathell, which are still recovering from a magical fairy war a thousand years ago called the godstorm. there’s alabastra, cold and beautiful and burned to pieces, ripped to jagged parts by the people who ought to have loved it best. there is GRIEF, because this is a war-torn country where things used to be stunning. like, man, what i would not GIVE to see alabastra in its prime, just fucking LOOK at this shit:
and that doesn’t even begin to get into the fact that this game, playing as a woman, is.... gay. it’s gay, y’all!!! it’s so gay that i don’t always know how to handle it!!!
and like sure, that’s because it was definitely coded with a male-player-character in mind, but they just... never removed those lines, playing as a woman? so you wander around and you get hit on constantly, and given that i am personally gay as all hell, this delights me. but the inverse of this is that the one male character who DOES hit on you also hits on you as a dude. i love grim onwig, that’s all there is to it.
it’s a loneliner game, in some ways-- more like skyrim. you run around, you buy or are given houses, you die a bunch of times to the FUCKING ettins in ettinmere, god i hate those fucking ettins, two-headed giant blue bastards who definitely kill and eat you. they are so rude. you fall DEEPLY in love with adessa and wish you could play as a gnome; ysa is the most incredible city in the game, i’ve truly never seen anything like it.
and yeah, in some ways, it falls prey to exactly all of the problems early aughts’ RPG’s did. it can be repetitive, a lot of fetch-quests, a lot of “mother of god, THIS AGAIN”
and yet. AND YET.
i’ve poured four hundred hours into this game, and every single time i start a new play, i find quests and stories that i somehow managed to miss the other times i’ve played it. the NPCs all have very distinct personalities, which is a goddamn feat, given how many of them there are. pick any single character with speaking lines, and they’ll be distinct unto themselves. and i mean that-- even the random characters in taverns, every single shopkeep, anyone and everyone you speak to, all of them. they say things and you go “hold on what the FUCK”, even when there’s no quest behind them. the depth of worldbuilding that went into this game is INSANE; these writers really, really loved what they were creating, and that shines through in every single moment you play
please give it a chance. it’s really, really worth it. i leave you with the empty court of the winter king, because the first time i stepped into it, it felt like coming home.
#kingdoms of amalur#PLAY MY STUPID FAVOURITE VIDEO GAME AND COME TALK TO ME ABOUT IT#video game rec#an unedited word-vomit that's all this is#we're also not gonna go into the legal controversies surrounding BugHuge and 38 Studios#like that's irrelevant to what the game actually is#anyway#sara watches things

I've been playing Amalur all day again and I've been having so much fun with it... I finally visited Rathir which is the capital city of my character's race, the Dokkalfar elves, and there was even some npc dialogue that hinted Liisi might be from one of the noble families there? Then I stole an heirloom from one of the most powerful families and had a thrilling jail break in which I swiped the jail keys and also put a stop to a one man death cult (and this is only half of what I've done in Rathir) and then I left Rathir for a while and helped a gorgeous brave general lady retrieve a spear guarded by some NASTY monsters and THEN I went to steal an amulet that turned out to be cursed and met up with Grim Onwig, one of my favorite npcs who got me to join the Travelers (thieves guild) in the first place and lowkey one of my boyfriends, and now we're working together to usurp the faceless leader(s) of the Travelers together.
I'm pretty much lost in this game lol. If it had a friendship or romance system for npcs I'd never come up for air.

I finished the Travelers storyline in KoA today and the ending was kind of a letdown tbh. But Grim, Ash, Crilgarin and Phasmer made for a pretty sweet team, so have some Thief Squad celebrating their victory.

Ok so I finished Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning recently and while it lacked the story-intensiveness I usually look for in RPGs (read: BioWare), I actually really enjoyed it. One of the few times the gameplay has interested me enough to make up for the story (which was still decent).
Also it has awesome class customisation- I finally got to fulfill my dream of being a warrior/mage. Weapon of choice was Chakrums, they are SO COOL and i didn't even know they existed before now- wish they were a thing in every game ever.
The only thing it lacked for me was romance- there is one (available to all genders) but it was weak. Plus I was totally crushing on this guy who kept calling me Dove anyway :P (secret to Ursula's heart = bird nicknames).
Anyway anyone who enjoyed Dragon Age I'd definitely give it a go!

KoA revival is here and so am I with my Grim x Fateless One content. Chapter 1
Agarth had said to be careful, to avoid unnecessary dangers, to try not to attract trouble.
The hooded figure standing guard under a big old chestnut tree in Lorca-Rane certainly spelled trouble.
He was out of view, but he wasn't exactly hiding, so his surprise was only mild to see she'd spotted him.
Eina pulled back her hood and approached the figure, determined. Trying to stay out of trouble was one thing, but she was not very good at avoiding it when it was in the way.
Her words were dry, but not unkind, "All good?"
The man made a gesture with the hand to indicate all was good with him.
"You've got some eyes, dove, to spot me all the way from the pillar."
"You're not hiding," she pointed out, ears perking up at the nickname.
His voice was low and rugged as if he'd swallowed shards of glass down with some brandy, but that didn't diminish its playful tone.
"That may be so but..." he eyed her up and down, Eina noticed, stopping at the nose ring, the quarterstaff slug across her back, the weathered armor and the pair of daggers at the hip, "not every odd traveler would've seen me. Maybe you're not a simple traveler, but a goddess, and your piercing eyes see all? Come to look at my humble post?"
She raised her eyebrows, fighting off a smile, "I see you're at home in this woods, have I trespassed?"
"You're in Star Camp, home of the Travelers, dove. Now, I don't suppose you came here by accident. Ask, dove. Ask to join our number."
He had been slightly more surprised to see she didn't know - didn't remember, she told herself - what the Travellers were. But he made sure to fill the void of knowledge with colorful tales of profit and freedom good enough to pique her interest.
"I'll come back," she assured him, a hint of a threat in her soft, low voice.
"That's what I'm hoping."
...
Later in Starcamp, Grim asked Crilgarin about the keen- eyed dokklafar he'd sent her way.
"Strange thing to do, recruit a stranger like that..." the fae mused, "but I don't think your instincts have betrayed you. She spoke to the Hierophant and is off on her first job. We'll see if she comes back..."
"Have a little faith, dear Cril."
"Faith? Words I'd never thought would be uttered by Grim Onwig... don't get your hopes up, friend."
Grim snorted, and made a condescending gesture, he felt a bit naked under Crilgarin's wisdom, "I don't trade in hope."
