Art direction and design by Gribbitt! members Michael Kevin Lee (direction, design and illustration) and Jan Kovaleski (illustration). Gribbitt! also worked with a bunch of other artists, notably Disco pionneer Donna Summer on the Four Seasons of Love and A Love Trilogy (Summer was under the same label Lipps Inc. was under : Casablanca Records, along with Village People, Parliament, Kiss... basically some good ass music idc idc). All this futuristic groove mixed together birthed one of my favorite album covers and one of the first vinyls I ever touched ! The record was released in 1979 and contains one of my favorite songs ever : Funkytown (Shrek rpz). I also gotta say that it took me YEARS to figure out that the girl in the music video (Debbie Jenner) was NOT the one singing the song, Cynthia Johnson, a black woman..

DA et design par Michael Kevin Lee (DA, design, illustration) et Jan Kovaleski (illustration) de Gribbitt!, qui a aussi bossé avec pas mal d'autres artistes comme Donna Summer, la pionnière du Disco, sur Four Seasons of Love et A Love Trilogy (Summer qui était d'ailleurs dans le même label que Lipps Inc., Casablanca Records, avec les Village People, Parliament ou encore Kiss... en gros de la bonne musique sa race lol). Tout ce mélange de groove futuriste donnera naissance à une de mes pochettes d'albums préférées et un des premiers vinyles que j'ai eu entre les mains ! L'album est sorti en 1979 et contient une de mes chansons préférées : Funkytown (Shrek rpz). Je dois dire aussi que ça m'a pris des années avant de capter que la meuf dans le clip (Debbie Jenner) n'est PAS celle qui chante la chanson, Cynthia Johnson, une femme noire..

For Project 4 I chose to use the word FLASH. The use of this word was inspired by the song “Flash Light” by Parliament. The song is off the album Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome. The album art was designed by Stephen Lumel who was a part of the graphic design firm Gribbitt who designed many classic album covers of the 70s. I wanted to use light as a material, because I felt it matches the spacey, open feel of the synthesizer fueled concept album. With light as a tool, my focus turned to projection. I created a makeshift lightbox and projected “FLASH” on a wall using a flashing strobe light. The type is in BD Geminis which is the typeface I found most similar to that used on the cover of the album.
