Grey’s Monument with the background of the Monument Mall shopping center on Newcastle. It consists of a statue of Lord Grey standing atop a 40m column. - The monument was built in 1838 to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from Nov 1830 to Jul 1834. The Earl Grey tea is named after him. Earl Grey itself is one of the title in the Peerage of the UK - a kind of legal system comprising hereditary and lifetime titles in the UK (as elsewhere in Europe). - Fun fact: the head of the statue was knocked off by a bolt of lightning during World War II in 1941.
