FAR TOO FAMILIAR

Chapter 7: 

Broken dreams

Inside the tavern, Lydia led Lucifer and Athena to a table over near the edge away from peering eyes, Lucifer pulled himself away and brought some bottles of meed and brought it over to the table setting it down for the others to partake.

Taking his seat he handed a bottle to Athena who shook her head, "no, sorry brother but I'm not going be drinking today."

"You not drink? Wernt you the one who won a drinking contest to a dedra?"

Shaking her head she started Turning away. Athena she looked up at Lydia, "we're here, now we need awnsers."

Lucifer who looked ready to press for  more awnsers , on his sister's sudden refusal of the meed, redirected that look to Lydia. "Quite! Now what happened tell us everything!"

Lydia nodded, "alright to know the full story, me and Sirna were at Alduin's wall, with Esbern and Delphine, this was shortly after the Thalmor incident she told you...not even a week after...I don't think but..." Lucifer then interrupted and waved his hand, "wait wait , excuse me thalmor incident? What incident?"

"You mean she didn't tell you? Sirna said she sent word to you about it! Or Atlest to Mrs Athena here?" She looked at Athena who shook her head. "The last time I've herd anything about the thalmor my fathers head was on the head of some rebels pike...what happened??"

"Oh...fuck...well I'll be breif, but Sirna , she snuck into a party held by Lady Elenwen, the Aldmeri Dominions resident Thalmor ambassador, the Thalmor embassy, with the help of the blades and a Bosmer bar tender named Malborn, she went in search of anything related to the dragons, but according to the conversation afterwards, found nothing but a friend....that's the incident."

"But why didn't she tell us? Dose she know what she could have done to our name?? If-"

"From what I've herd she went under an Alies, your names is fine, plus they didn't figure it out till after she made her escape...now if I can continue."

"Uhg..oh right, carry on." Lucifer leaned back in his seat as Lydia cleared her throat.

"With the blades, we went to Aludins wall where we learned of a way to defeat Aludin!"

"Aludin..Aludin....I don't...wait that's the big black dragon right?"  Lydia nodded, "mhm..straight from the old Nordic myths..well the Akaviri myths" she laughed a little, "there we learned of a shout, a Thu'um with the ability to knock a dragon out of the sky! With that knowledge we left and returned to the greybeards...tho I am fairly a knowledgeable about the events that happened between finding this shout I had to stay outside the walls of High Hrothgar, but when she emerged after what felt like hours, she mentioned  a name, Paarthurnax...and then went on about an elder scroll it's why she visited the Arcanium, Athena where that...orc....he wasn't very helpful but it did put us on a path to someone who cool, that old coot out in the ice, he pointed us in the direction and we spent atlest ...underground you loose track of time but i know we were in blackreach for over a week. But we found the scroll and we went out separate ways ...I went home and she went to the top of the mountain, she went to learn this shouts , to challenge aludin...at first I thought it was fine then that tremor happened, and that flash of light that came from the mountain...that popping noise....it...it made me worry for my Thane ...but I didn't go panicking or worrying till about a week later, and well now it's two  rounding to a third....we need to head up the mountain."

"Well thank you for enlightening us on the situation now I see your worry." Lucifer replied, Athena agreeing, "yes me too , I'm sorry if my words were harsh at the college."

"But how do you expect us to investigate this? We can walk up the 748 steps, all we want but the moment we step to their door , we will only be turned away, the Greybeads as renowned and respected they are, they will only converse with their own and those of the dragon blood! Sirna isn't with us they'll never listen to us! Let alone let us look around their weird Cult!"

"Normally yes, that's how it works but Lucifer! You and Athena are Sirnas siblings, even though you are not dragonborn by birth and famililar connections you do share the dragons blood that courses through Sirna's veins, and we can hope it's enough to convince them to hear us out." Lydia reasoned with him, Lucifer sighed, "if we shared the blood! Sadly our mother was a very promiscuous woman, and committed many infidelity, while our father, was working as a thalmor agent! No matter what our mother claims that we are all her husbands Children , there is always a chance Sirna has a different father, not that I..., I mean Sirnas Hair is red as fire, while me and Athena's are raven black like our father.., and there were a few, red haired fellows who would pay our mother a visit...what I'm saying- "

"What you're saying is that there's a chance you don't share in the dragons blood?"

" precisely!" Lucifer said sorrowfully

Lydia nodded, "we'll let's just hope they don't find out, look they don't know anything about the Dragonborn's family as far-"

"Lie? Lie to the greybeards?"

"It's the only way to find Sirna!"

"BUT THA-". Athena put a hand on her brother's shoulder, "Luci,  you know we have too.."

he sighed, "yeah, alright then we should start heading up those steps let me go grab by bow." He stood up and went to grab his hunting bow.

Lydia fallowed him, "what happened to that two gander you lugged around?" Lucifer put his bow on his back and walked to her. "I left as soon as I got back to whiterun from my hunting trip, now we should start going!"

Lydia nodded and they left heading to the 748 steps.

Once arriving at the doors of Monastery, "we just walk in?" Lucifer asked looking at Lydia who nodded, "yes but be prepared to explain ourselves, tho peaceful pacifist, their words can be much sharper then any blade!."

They nodded and entered High Hrothgar, walking up the steps and into the main hall, they looked around it.

"it's..... duller then I imagined." Lucifer  said standing in the center. Of the room.  Athena went and ran her hand along the walls of the room. "Well I'll be it's..beautiful I'd never thought I'd find myself here...it's ...".

"Stop gawking we're here in a Mission!" Lydia said as movement was heard approaching them. Entertaining the main hall from the right, one of the Elder Greybeard Arngeir, approached the others trailing behind him. "You can call me master Arngeir, why have you come here? This is no place to wade in the waters of time!"

"master!" Athena bowed, Arngeir  turned her away, "I am sorry Arche-mage but he wave no tolerance

For dealing with outsider please leave our premises freely."  Arngeir turned to walk away.

"we are the Dragonborn's. Siblings! We need your help to find Sirna!" Lucifer reached to stop him he turned back. "Our business with the dragonborn to guide her down the right path in the way of the voice, we can't help you with anything she might have done! Again feel free to leave."

" Master Arngeir! Please, we have reason to believe that she never came back from the throat of the world! If she's in danger...we we need to find her! But also isn't it your job to help those with the dragons blood, wouldn't her siblings share that blood? They may not be dragonborn but they do have that bloodline." Lydia pleaded

Master Arngeir paused, and then turned to them sighing deeply looking at Lydia with softened eyes. "Look it's not that I don't want to help you but, it's that I can't, she went to the top of the mountain, the throat of the world. To learn a shout of pure evil! She went to the place our master resides, it's sacred…..hollow ground! We can not approach it without being summoned by Paarthurnax ourselves, let alone till she returns!"

"But.."

"No buts I'm sorry but we can't help you—"

And with that the mountain rattled and roared, master  Arngeir  took a step back, "I'm sorry , I must of over stepped my boundaries….yet again It seems our way will be overlooked……you will be getting your answers."

"What's was that?" Lucifer asked.

"Oh my Gods...Paarthurnax is a dragon-"  Lydia concluded.

Sirna walked back giving Lucas as hug , "like I said your mother would be proud no matter if you remember her or not."  Lucas smiled, "thanks Sirna that talk definitely made me feel better."

"Heh hay that's what friends are for kid!" Sirna punched his shoulder before standing up. "Now we have to complete the Pokédex, right?"

"Right!"  "Let's get started!"

They left prelude beach and went to the gate where they met with Akari, "ah so you're heading out?"

"Yep we're gonna get some work with the Pokédex!"  Lucas says 

"We'll good luck!"

Rosa: A Classic Doctor Who Story

One of the best things about Rosa: it completely swatted away one of the persistent complaints of the fandom’s greybeards, namely that Doctor Who as a show isn’t true to its roots.

As originally conceived, the show was meant to be an educational vehicle, especially in its historical episodes.  In its first series in 1963 Doctor Who saw adventures in China in the thirteenth century, Aztec Central America, and revolutionary France.  These were adventurous, but their intended purpose was one of education (there’s a separate conversation to be had about how well Doctor Who handled education about non-European subjects, but let’s leave that for now).

Over the years, as the show evolved, historical episodes became less “adventures in the past” and more “aliens in the past”.  The last “pure historical” (no anachronistic elements other than Doctor, companions, and TARDIS) was the fifth Doctor story Black Orchid (a mildly racist murder mystery in the 1920s).  By this point most “historicals” were more like The King’s Demons: historical settings for battles between the Doctor and the Master.

When the show returned in 2005 it was keen to prominently feature historicals but much like the classic season it was much more likely to use these as historical settings for science fiction adventures.  The Unquiet Dead is a classic example of how the new series did historicals: a lush historical setting, a famous figure from the past (played by a decently high profile actor) and an extraterrestrial menace that the Doctor needs to combat.  They continued in this form for nine series: two or three episodes a series of aliens in Earth history, sometimes taking dramatic forms (gigantic cybermen marching across 19th Century London on Christmas day, anyone?) and focusing much more on the excitement than the education.  There were exceptions, of course: Vincent And The Doctor had an alien foe but focused on Van Gogh’s work and mental illness.  But for most historicals the pattern was set.

And then there’s Rosa.  There’s no aliens to fight in Rosa.  No threat to civilization (well, there is, but...), there’s just a time travelling racist trying to disrupt a moment of human defiance and dignity, and good people trying to stop him.  It’s a hugely educational episode (although it takes some liberties and simplifies some complexities) and hugely inspiring, because it has as its purpose the revelation of the past.  There’s all sorts of arguments about what the civil rights movement would have looked like without Parks (I see her as a noble boat on a rising tide but there were other boats) but fundamentally hers was an important story worth telling, worth reminding another generation about.

And that’s one of the things that Doctor Who is for.  Celebrating what’s best in people, decrying our worst behaviours, pointing us towards a better tomorrow.

The grumbling greybeads (of which there are thankfully few) don’t hate Rosa because it’s not Doctor Who.  They hate it because it does Doctor Who too well to be denied.  It rises up.
