Greta and Aaron got married on July 4th, 1915 at the courthouse. There was little fanfare around it; certainly not the big party they'd had at Sarah and Jacob's wedding. It didn't seem appropriate, with Avram, Ben and Jacob gone.
The bride and groom stand just a little apart, very formal and solemn. In reality, it was boiling hot in the city, and they had only a few minutes to pose before the sweat began to gather.

Basil Rathbone and Greta Garbo in Anna Karenina (Clarence Brown, 1935) Cast: Greta Garbo, Fredric March, Freddie Bartholomew, Maureen O'Sullivan, May Robson, Basil Rathbone, Reginald Owen, Gyles Isham. Screenplay: Clemence Dane, Salka Viertel, S.N. Behrman, based on a novel by Leo Tolstoy. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons. Costume design: Adrian. Film editing: Robert Kern. Music: Herbert Stothart. One of the problems with adapting Tolstoy's novel to another medium is that while everyone knows the story of the title character, who throws herself under a train at the end, at least half of the book is not about her. It's about Konstantin Dmitrievich Levin, the burly intellectual who is preoccupied with the problems of a changing Russia. Though Levin's is also a love story -- he falls for Anna's sister-in-law, Kitty, who initially spurns him because she's in love with Count Vronsky, the man for whom Anna leaves her husband -- he's Tolstoy's surrogate in the novel, just as Pierre Bezukhov is in War and Peace. Downplaying Levin's role in any adaptation of Anna Karenina is as gross a distortion of the novel as omitting Pierre from an adaptation of War and Peace. But it has been done, and often, given that the melodrama of a doomed love is far easier to sell to an audience than the problems of a reformist landowner. In this MGM version of Anna Karenina, Levin virtually disappears: He's played by a tall, bland English actor named Gyles Isham, whose film career was brief and undistinguished. Kitty is at least played by a star, Maureen O'Sullivan, although her presence in the film is largely designed to introduce the character of Vronsky and to suffer disappointment when he throws her over for Anna. This was Greta Garbo's second turn at playing Anna: She had filmed a silent version, titled Love (Edmund Goulding, 1927), with John Gilbert as Vronsky. (The earlier version omitted not only Levin but also Kitty, and was filmed with two endings: In the one aimed at the American market, Anna doesn't commit suicide but is reunited with Vronsky after Karenin's death.) Garbo is the best reason for seeing the 1935 version, although MGM, with David O. Selznick producing, gave it a lavish setting, with cinematography by Garbo's favorite photographer, William H. Daniels. It opens with a spectacularly filmed sequence in which Vronsky and his fellow officers attend a banquet, with the camera performing a long tracking shot down a seemingly endless table laden with food. Unfortunately, Fredric March is miscast as Vronsky, turning the dashing young officer into a rather somber middle-aged man; he and Garbo are sorely lacking in chemistry together. The screenplay by Clemence Dane, Salka Viertel, and S.N. Behrman does what it can to pull together the pieces carved out of Tolstoy, but the ending, even Anna's suicide, feels flat and perfunctory. In the novel, Anna's disintegration, aided by isolation from society, by illnesses both mental and physical, and by her addiction to opiates, is dealt with at some harrowing length, but trimming much of that background means that she appears to be driven to her ghastly end solely by losing her young son, Sergei (Freddie Bartholomew), and by the cruelty of Karenin (Basil Rathbone). Tolstoy, of course, gives us deep background on Karenin that, while it doesn't absolve him completely, makes him far more credible than a stock Rathbone villain.

get to know me(me)
tagged by @ray-vnn and tag 9 people to get to know better
three ships: Xena and Gabrielle, Greta and Carson, and… Levin and Kitty?
first ever ship: probably like… Rebecca and Isaac in Genesis
last song: Frug by Rilo Kiley, I’m trying to make abridged versions of my Everything is Greta Gill and Everything Hurts, Carson Shaw Coded or Whatever, and Aloto Adjacent playlists that will each fit on a cd for my very offline elder queer friends. I’m not having the easiest time narrowing down the songs haha. Wish me luck.
last movie: Bullet Train, I was reading the book and really enjoying it, and I think was all caught up on Barry, so kinda took a stab in the dark at something to watch during weekend hangout. It was pretty enjoyable. The book was too, though it probably could’ve been shorter. I got pretty bored of the arrogant kid and all that.
currently reading: The Secret Adversary via Phoebe Reads a Mystery. I’m enjoying it! I’ve never read it before, but I once had it suggested to me on livejournal years and years ago (hi goodyproctor) and never forgot somehow.
currently consuming: this thing I made up where I carefully slice a spicy chicken patty in half so it’s two thin discs when it’s halfway done baking, then sprinkle minced onions on the unbreaded sides and spread a thin layer of sweet and sour sauce on it and bake it the rest of the way. Then eat it on bread of some sort with spicy Yum Yum sauce on it. It’s good!
currently craving: chicken korma, rogan josh, malai kofta, aloo tikki, heaps of rice and garlic naan, and kheer from Palace of India in Grand Rapids specifically. And the Japanese chicken at that Chinese place. And masaman curry. And that crunchy spicy sushi roll with the onions.
9 people do the thing: @benevolentvoid @bearbuttz @upchuckthepunx @ohnonotlove @mnflvr @helloburdo @rosa--rubiginosa @thunderboltjackson @khaoticdyke

I can’t remember. F.W. Murnau (John Malkovich) is filming Nosferatu (1922), but isn’t reclusive star Max Schreck (Willem Dafoe) taking his role of the vampire way too seriously? In some ways it’s a curate’s egg of a film. It certainly helps if you are a lover of old classic film and have some knowledge of the source material at the film’s core. It’s a fabulous concept that the screenplay is based around, that the star of the film may actually be a real vampire, and the whole production is executed with consummate skill (Dafoe was deservedly Oscar nominated as were make-up artists Ann Buchanan & Amber Sibley). But come the end it fizzles out and proves to not have delivered on its devilishly intriguing premise. Fun, though, and tech credits all round keep one well involved. 6/10

So to recap (because it's been a while, sorry) Aaron married his wife Greta in mid-1915, and since then they've been working on fixing up the farm.
Oh, did I say they? I meant Greta, because Aaron's been busy studying to pass his exam to be a lawyer. He's never had much interest in keeping the family farm going, but Greta is a good wife from farmer stock and knows the value of hard work. So there she is cutting grass at 16 weeks pregnant while her husband is... somewhere, doing something.
(He's kind of a jerk, if you haven't figured it out yet).
Once their first child Esti (named for his mother) is born, Greta devotes herself to caring for the baby, and with Aaron receiving an offer of employment with his first law firm, farm chores begin to fall by the way side.
Fortunately, Sarah's eldest son Sam has no interest in continuing his education beyond primary school, and every interest in learning to manage the farm. So he moves in with Aaron and Greta and gets to work.

I need an angsty sage fic where he’s completely corrupted and maybe instead of working with the los he kills mike (bc he hates him and mike sucks so it’s just what should happen) and takes his place just wreaking havoc on porrima and at first anisa felix and mc are trying to find a way to bring him back from the corruption but sage doesn’t want to be saved and is completely corrupted so they realize the only thing to do is take him down but MC refuses and is sure they can bring back sage, but rime (bc do you remember how annoying he was when he was in ch 12/13/14 of sages route) is like no he’s completely gone…. and MC confronts Sage alone to try and talk things through and maybe they’ve found a cure/way to help and basically that scene in the forest in Ch 10/11/12? where he is full hulked out and MC either waits patiently or talks him down from the corruption but this time he’s yelling at them for following him and basically tries to kill MC (obviously doesn’t or does he 👀 i mean whatever floats your boat) so i’m gonna need a whole fic of that
#this is not even an original thought i feel like i’ve seen soemone say sowmthing like this and if they have and they wrote the fic PLEASE#SEND IT TO ME#also this is inspired by the fact that i was watching ben 10 ultimate alien force this morning bc why not and there are two episodes where#kevin levin goes crazy after stealing a bunch of ppl’s powers and gwen is trying to save him and she hunts him down but he’s so mad bc he—#had been trying to stay away from her so he didn’t hurt her but then he went absolutely bonkers#please feel free to add maximum angst and maybe a happy ending or even a bad ending would be greta but only as like a bonus chapter bc —-#I NEED A HAPPY ENDING#this is literally based off my obsession with watching ben ten as a kid and me trying to relive some nostalgia#kevin levin = sage lesath#fictif#fictif last legacy#last legacy fictif#sage lesath#sage lesath angst#sage lesath x mc#sage lesath x reader

Greta Garbo was the best reason for seeing Clarence Brown's 1935 version of Anna Karenina, but Ralph Richardson is the best argument for watching Julien Duvivier's. As Karenin, Richardson demonstrates an understanding of the character that Basil Rathbone failed to display in the earlier version. Rathbone played Karenin as a cuckold with a cold heart. Richardson wants us to see what Tolstoy found in Karenin: the wounded pride, the inability to stoop to tenderness that has been bred in him by long contact with Russian society and political status-seeking. Unfortunately, Richardson's performance exists in a rather dull adaptation of the novel. Although Vivien Leigh was certainly a tantalizing choice for the title role, she makes a fragile Anna -- no surprise, as she was recovering from tuberculosis, a miscarriage, and a bout with depression that seems to have begun her descent into bipolar disorder. At times, especially in the 19th-century gowns designed by Cecil Beaton, she evokes a little of the wit and backbone of Scarlett O'Hara, but she has no chemistry with her Vronsky, the otherwise unremembered Irish actor Kieron Moore. It's not surprising that producer Alexander Korda gave Moore third billing, promoting Richardson above him. The production, too, is rather drab, especially when compared to the opulence that MGM could provide in its 1935 heyday. There's a toy train early in the film that the special effects people try to pass off as full-size by hiding it behind an obviously artificial snowstorm. As usual, this Anna Karenina is all about building up to Anna's famous demise, this time by taking us into her foreboding nightmare about a railroad worker she saw at the beginning of her affair with Vronsky. And also as usual, the half of the novel dealing with Levin, Tolstoy's stand-in character, is scuttled. In this version, Levin is a balding middle-aged man whose only function is to be rejected by Kitty, who is then thrown over for Anna by Vronsky. There's a perfunctory scene that gives a happy ending to the Levin-Kitty story, but it adds nothing but length to the film. Some of the scenes featuring the supporting cast, especially those with Martita Hunt as Princess Betsy, bring the film to flickering life, but there aren't enough of them to overcome the general dullness.
